Chapter 7: Chiba Trip

Y/N was laying down on his bed, completely bored. He was about to drift off to sleep until someone knocked on his door.

Puzzled, he opened the door and went to the door. He opens it to find his older sister in clothes meant for camping. She had a packed up bag behind her as well. Itsuki was behind her as well, tied up as he was also in clothes meant for the great outdoors.

Before she could open her mouth, Y/N closed the door and knew what this meant. Sighing to himself, he got ready and opened the door twenty minutes later, an annoyed look on his face as he stared at his sister, who in turned had a triumphant grin on her face. They got in her sister's SUV, driving to Chiba Mura. Y/N was dressed in khaki shorts with a red t-shirt, wearing gray jacket over it with the zipper open.

They arrived at their destination and Y/N was still puzzled as to why they had head here. It was summer vacation and this area was more of camp for scouts. Getting out of the car, he saw a red SUV and a white van.

The ones coming out of the van were Hachiman, Komachi, Yui, Yukino, Hiratsuka, and Saika. The ones coming out of the white van was Hayato, Yumiko, Tobe, and glasses wearing girl, Ebina.

Hiratsuka: Looks like you're all here.

Hachiman and Y/N: Eh?

Hiratsuka: You guys will be doing some community service for a few days.

Hachiman: Community service?

Hiratsuka: As part of the Service Club's summer camp, you'll be working as counselors for a kids' summer camp.

Y/N: (looks to Setsuna) I did not sign up for this.

Setsuna: (smirks) You know you can't argue with me. Deal with it.

Y/N: (sigh) Yeah, yeah.

Itsuki: It's been a while, Shizuka. Let's do our best, okay?

Hiratsuka: (blushes and stutters) H-Hai, I-Itsuki-san.

Itsuki was confused as to why Hiratsuka was blushing. Concerned, he asks her what was wrong, which only increased the blush further on Shizuka's face.

Y/N: Nee-san...

Setsuna: Hmm?

Y/N: Is...?

Setsuna: Nii-san oblivious to it? Yes.

Y/N: (thoughts) Nii-san...get a wife already. In fact, marry her while your at it.

Small Timeskip

Man: Now, say hello to the nice boys and girls who'll be helping us out!

Y/N and the others were now standing in front of a group of children. Now that they found out about their job, Y/N was slightly annoyed. He was never good with children. So was Itsuki. There was only one person in their family that was when it wasn't their mother.

Kids: Hello!

Setsuna: If you kids need anything, just tell us! Onee-san is happy to help!~

All the kids attitudes had brighten up. The others were impressed. Well, except for the L/N family.

Y/N: She's going at it again.

Itsuki: Yeah...her ability to order these kids can be quite terrifying, yes?

Y/N: Yeah. She could possibly take over the whole world.

Setsuna: Let's make as many fun memories as we can during the summer camp!

Yukino: Excuse me, but why are they here too?

Hiratsuka: I said it'd look good on their records to bait people into volunteering.

Itsuki: While that is smart, it's not necessarily ideal to mislead people. Shizuka.

Hiratsuka: O-Oh, y-you're right, I-Itsuki-san.

Y/N and Setsuna: (thoughts) Nii-san, just marry her already.

Hiratsuka: (clears throat) A-Anyway, this is a good opportunity for you guys. You should learn how to live with people from other cliques.

Hachiman: Yeah, not happening. We'll never be friends with people like them.

Hiratsuka: No, you don't need to make friends with them.

Y/N: So just bear with them?

Itsuki: Essentially, yes. Learn to deal with them smoothly without fighting or ignoring them.

Hiratsuka: That's what it means to adjust to society.

Man: Now, let the orienteering begin!

The kids start to split off into groups and converse among themselves.

Hiratsuka: Okay. Your first job is to help out with the race. Accompany the kids and watch over them to make sure nothing bad happens.

Small Timeskip

The kids that had split off into groups were now walking through the forest, going to the various checkpoints as a race was going on.

The most active was Hayato and his group. Itsuki had hanged back with Shizuka to catch up. Setsuna was leading most of the kids who needed help. Y/N trailed behind, walking with Hachiman, Yui, Komachi, Yukino, and Saika.

Tobe: Dude, elementary schoolers are, like, so little, dude! Doesn't being in high school, like, make you feel like an old geezer?

Y/N: (thoughts) You sure are acting like a geezer.

Yumiko: Hey, quit it. You're making me sound like some old hag.

Saika: But when I was in elementary school, high schoolers looked so grown-up.

Komachi: High schoolers look really grown-up to me too! Except my brother.

Hachiman: Hey, I'm like a super grown-up! I complain, tell dirty lies, and play kids for fools!

Y/N: Your more of a criminal.

Yui: Is that what grown-ups were like to you?

In the back, Yukino had stopped and looked to the side.

Yukino: Hey, what are those girls doing?

Hayato: (runs over) I'll go check.

Y/N: (sigh) He's like the perfect person. Tsk. This is not how I want to spend my summer.

Hachiman: Then why are you here?

Y/N: When my older sister has something planned, there is usually nothing you can stop it. Not even my older brother can stop her.

Hachiman: What is she, the devil's incarnate?

Y/N: Nope. Just a scary lady.

Setsuna: And this scary lady is behind you.

The two jump and Y/N turns around with a fearful look. His sister had a sadistic grin on her face.

Setsuna: So I'm a scary lady, huh? First you called me a old hag that one time.

Y/N: That was years ago!

Setsuna grabs her younger brother and puts him in a headlock, nuzzling her fist into his head. The others sweat drop at the sight of the siblings.

Setsuna: You think I'm some old witch, huh!? Is that it!?

Y/N: Huh!? What are you dumb!? I never said that, you hag!

Setsuna: That's the second time you've called me a hag! You little...!

Y/N: Stop that! That hurts dammit!

Setsuna: Apologize then!

Hachiman: (thoughts) What the hell is this? Older sisters are scary.

Y/N forced his sister off of him and noticed the black haired girl of the group that Hayato was with was standing off to the side. In fact, no one else was paying attention to her.

Was she a loner already? Strange. Usually, kids her age wouldn't reach that level of social interaction.

(A/N): Well they can. Hell take a look at me for example. I'm a loner at school myself.

Komachi: Onii-chan! This is bad! This is bad!

Hachiman: What's wrong?

Komachi: There's no way you can win against that hunk there! It's a bad sign!

Y/N: When is he ever going to win against Hayama?

Hachiman: He's right. Besides, leave me alone.

Ebina: She might be onto something.

Hachiman: Huh!?

Y/N: When the hell did you get here?

Ebina: Hikitani-kun, you give off a donut vibe, like a loser full of jelly! The moment Hayama-kun beings the banana, your jelly'll come gushing out!

Hachiman: I...see..I'll watch my back.

Y/N: Huh?

Setsuna: Come on people, move it!

Y/N: (sigh) This is going to be a long day...

The group continued onward, walking through the lush forest and it's green scenery. There were times when Yukino would walk through the sunlight that had pierced through the gaps of trees where it would shine down on her. Y/N would witness it and he would be awestruck. Yukino Yukinoshita was beautiful, but when she walked through the sunlight, he had a small tint of pink on his cheeks.

Whenever Yukinoshita turns around and their eyes meet, Y/N would quickly look away. Yukino would have a small blush as well as she looks back to the front. Setsuna would watch the scene unfold and she would gently smile to herself. Her family's health and well being were her top priority and seeing Y/N change for the better little by little had brought her happiness.

Along the way, they spot the same girl who would be left our from the other groups. Upon seeing this, Y/N felt similar to this, but perhaps the situations as to why they become loners is different.

Hachiman: Guess stuff like that happens in elementary school too.

Yukino: There's no difference between elementary schoolers and high schoolers. They're human, all the same.

Timeskip

Upon reaching a campsite, presumably the end of the race, there was a camping lodge. There were also various small kitchens there.

Itsuki and Shizuka were lighting some of them.

Hiratsuka: There. Just like that.

Hachiman: You're insanely good at it.

Hiratsuka: Heh. I used to throw barbecues with my club a lot back in college.

Itsuki: Ah, the good ole' days.

Hiratsuka and Itsuki: While we both got the pit ready, the couples'd flirt like--tch. Damn. Now I'm in a bad move.

Y/N: (whisper) Nee-san...

Setsuna: (whisper) They should get together.

Itsuki: What are you two whispering over there?

Setsuna: None of your concern, Onii-chan!~ Now then, boys get the fires ready. Girls, go get the ingredients.

Kids: Okay!

Hachiman: (thoughts) Are you splitting the boys and girls out of spite? Sure you're okay?

Long story short, the group begins to help the kids make lunch, cutting up various ingredients like carrots. Y/N was helping some of the boys cut theirs up as well. Yukino and Yui were at their own station.

Yumiko wasn't doing anything as she didn't want to damage her finger nails. The group were making curry.

Yukino: Well, it's the obvious choice for a sixth-grade summer camp.

Hachiman: Everyone's family makes curry a little differently. My mom's curry's got a ton of stuff in it, like fried tofu.

Tobe: Dude yeah! Mine puts fish cakes in too!

Hachiman: I-I see... (thoughts) Don't just start talking to me. I nearly thought you were a friend.

Yui: Yeah, my mom does stuff like that too. This one time, she put these weird leaves in it. Sometimes she makes some pretty crazy mistakes!

Y/N: They were probably curry leaves.

Yukino: Are you sure those leaves weren't laurier?

Hachiman: (thoughts) What? Lolier?

Looking at Hikigaya's face, Y/N sighs at his stupidity. Obviously it wasn't lolier.

Y/N: "Laurier" is French for "bay leaf" dumbass.

Yui: Wait, "laurier" didn't mean "tissue!?"

As everyone were talking about what their mothers put in their curry's, Y/N was thinking of his own mother. Just not, the pleasant memories.

Y/N lets out a grunt of pain. He was snapped out of his thoughts as his finger was bleeding. He cut himself.

Y/N: Tch.

Boy: Onii-chan!

Y/N: It's fine. It's just a flesh wound.

Setsuna: But if you don't treat it properly, it'll get infected. Come here.

Y/N rolls his eyes in annoyance. Sure he was grateful for his sister taking care of him for the past years after their mother died, but at this point, Setsuna was their mother. Whether it was laundry, cooking, or any of the house chores, she would be doing it.

Y/N didn't realize how much his sister has been doing it for him. It honestly made him regret being there at times.

After bandaging his fingers, Setsuna was about to leave until Y/N's hand grabbed her own.

Setsuna: What's with you all of sudden?

Y/N doesn't respond and only hugs his older sister, tightly. She was shocked at first, but she welcomed it nonetheless. Y/N starts to cry softly as Setsuna starts to rub his back.

Setsuna: Your not the only one that misses her.

Y/N: (quietly) I'm sorry...

Setsuna: Hmm?

Y/N: I'm sorry...for...

Setsuna: Ssshhh...it's okay. Let it all out.

From afar, Itsuki was watching from afar, a smile on his face.

Hiratsuka: What?

Itsuki: It's nothing. Just a sibling bond.

Hiratsuka: Hmm.

The two continue to watch. Shizuka continues to smoke her cigarette and Itsuki was holding a beer can, taking small sips out of it every now and then.

Itsuki: You know, you should stop smoking.

Hiratsuka: Can't really do that. I've already fallen to far down the hole.

Itsuki: Besides, smoking ruins that beautiful face of yours.

Hiratsuka: ...

Itsuki: ... (thoughts) What the hell did I just say!?

Back with Y/N

Y/N was leaning up against a tree, watching the black haired girl go to the same area as Yukino and Hachiman, who was staring at Yuigahama for how stupid she is.

Hachiman: Is she stupid?

???: Seriously, they're all so stupid.

Hachiman: Well, that goes for most people in the world. Glad you realized that early in life.

Yukino: "Most people" also includes you, I presume?

Hachiman: Hey, I'm not strictly one of them. I'm unique enough to float alone in the seas that are "most people."

Yukino: Unique in the fact that you can take pride in that, I'm sure. You're even beyond disgusting. You invite my contempt.

Hachiman: Isn't going above and beyond praiseworthy?

???: Name.

Hachiman: Huh? What about a name?

???: I'm asking your name. Wasn't it obvious?

Yukino: When you ask someone their name, you name yourself first.

Y/N: You shouldn't be so harsh, Yukinoshita.

Yukino: Y/N, if you were there, why didn't you say anything?

Y/N: Did I really need to?

Rumi: Rumi Tsurumi.

Yukino: I'm Yukino Yukinoshita. And this person is...Hiki...Hikiga...Hikigay-kun, I believe?

Hachiman: Hey, how did you know my fourth-grade nickname?

Y/N: ...Idiot.

Flashback, Hikigaya's Memories

Hachiman: They even dropped the "Hiki" and just galled me "Gay" in the end.

The scene changes to Hikigaya being in fourth-grade. He had grabbed his bag and was about to walk out, until three other boys call him out.

Boy 1: Hey, Gay! Gaying home already?

The other children burst out in laughter as Hachiman had paused after opening the door.

Flashback End

Hachiman: Hachiman Hikigaya.

Y/N: Y/N L/N.

Hachiman: And this is Yui Yuigahama.

Yui had run up to the other Service Club members, a cheerful attitude on her face as always.

Yui: You were Rumi Tsurumi-chan, right? (smiles) I hope we can get along.

Rumi: ...You three are kind of different. From those other people. I'm different too. From those people.

Yui: Different? What do you mean?

Y/N: Take a hint, Yuigahama.

Rumi: They're all such kids. So I thought being alone wouldn't be so bad.

Yui: Memories of friends from elementary school are kinda important, dontcha think?

Rumi: I don't need memories. I can just make friends with people from other schools when I get into middle school.

Yukino: Unfortunately, that won't happen. Those girls who point and laugh at you are going to the same middle school, aren't they? That means the same thing will happen. And those people from other schools will join in.

Rumi: I guess you're right. (clenches fists) I was just so stupid.

Yui: What happened?

Rumi: This isn't the first time they've shunned someone. But it usually ends pretty quick and they start talking to them again. Someone always makes the suggestion, and everyone kind of just goes with it. I'd go along with it too. But before I knew it, this time I'm the one getting shunned. I didn't do anything wrong either. Is this how it's going to be in middle school too?

Y/N looked to the group of girls that shunned her. He looked at them with hate. He despised people like them. Because it reminds himself of "him." That man.

Y/N grits his teeth and his eyes could be seen to have anger in them. Yukino could see the look in his eyes. She knew how much Y/N hated his father. She knew that the L/N siblings hated their father, but not as much as the youngest L/N. It honestly worries her.

Timeskip-Dawn

The kids had gone back to their lodges, leaving the group at the picnic tables there.

Yui: Think she'll be okay?

Hiratsuka: Are you worried about something?

Hayato: There's this girl who's always alone.

Yumiko: I kinda feel sorry for her.

Hachiman: (thoughts) No. They don't understand what the problem is. Being alone is perfectly fine. The problem is that she's forced to be alone due to the others' ill will.

Hiratsuka: So? What do you want to do about it?

Itsuki: What seems to be the problem anyway?

Hayato: ...I want to do whatever I can to change it.

Yukino: Whatever you can do? I see. ...You can't do it. You couldn't before.

Hayato only looks down. He remembers back in their time in school overseas that he could have stopped the harassment that Yukino was receiving, but he didn't. Looking to Y/N, he realized that he left him behind with that man, who was his father. Hayato grits his teeth in frustration.

Hiratsuka: Yukinoshita, what about you?

Yukino: You said that this was part of the Service Club's summer camp.  Would her case be included as part of the club activities?

Hiratsuka: Working as this summer camp's counselors is part of your summer camp. Logically speaking, you can argue that it is.

Yukino: I see. Then if she asks for our help, we will do whatever it takes to solve her problem.

Hiratsuka: (puts out cigarette) And is she asking for your help?

Yukino: We don't know--

Yui: (tugs on Yukino's sleeve) Yukinon. I don't think she'd ask even if she wants to. Rumi-chan said she did the same thing too. So she might think it's unfair if she got help, since no one else did. I think it's the same for the other girls too. Even if they want to talk to and get along with her, sometimes the circumstances just don't work out right.

Judging from Yui's explanation of the problem, Itsuki and Setsuna soon understood Rumi's situation, they don the same expression as Y/N, expressing hate and malice for the group of girls. In fact, it was reminiscent of their father, who ignored them for most if not all their life.

Y/N was thinking of various ways to get back at his father. He wanted to release his held in anger, his rage, his hate. All of it. He just wanted to release it all upon him. The pain the three of them felt when he left them behind. Setsuna and Itsuki were ready to forgive them back then, but not attending their mother's funeral was the last straw for the both of them. It didn't help the fact that Y/N had become a "broken individual" after the funeral for most of his middle school years.

Hiratsuka: ...Anyone opposed? Good. You guys can think about what you'll do. (yawns) I'm going to sleep.

Hiratsuka had walked off, along with Setsuna and Itsuki. There was a brief silence that occurred between the them, until Miura had spoken up.

Yumiko: But, like, she's cute. Why can't she just hang out with, like, another cute girl? She could, like, try talking to one of them, right? Then they'd, like, be friends, right? Like, easy, right?

Tobe: Dude, that's awesome! Yumiko, you're a genius!

Yumiko: Like, totally!

Yui: That's something only you could do, Yumiko.

Y/N: She's being shunned. There's no way they'll be friends. Not unless those girls can get their shit together.

Hayato: Now, now. Yumiko's got the right idea. But based on the situation, it might be hard just getting someone to talk to her.

Yumiko: Oh, right.

Ebina: (raises hand) Here.

Hayato: Hina, you've got an idea?

Ebina: She'll be fine. She can just live for her hobbies. When people really get into their hobbies, they start going to meet-ups and cons. She'll find all sorts of companions. I'm sure she'll find where she really belongs too. She'll realize that school isn't the only thing in life. I made friends thanks to the slash scene!

Y/N and Hachiman: (thoughts) Huh?

Ebina: (smiles wickedly) There are no girls in this world that hate homos! So I'm sure you'll understand too, Yukinoshita--

Hayato: Yumiko. Could you get some tea with Hina?

Yumiko: Okay! (stands up and drags Ebina) Come on, Ebina. Let's go.

Ebina: (struggles) Wait! I'm not done spreading the slash gospel! Wait! Hold on! Wait!

Hayato: I don't think we'll solve anything unless we find a way to make everyone friends again.

Hachiman: Heh. Everyone, huh?

Yukino: That's impossible. There isn't even a remote chance of it happening.

Yumiko: Hey, Yukinoshita-san, what's up with you?

Yukino: What do you mean?

Yumiko: We were, like, thinking about making everyone friends. Why do you have to, like, say that? Like, I totally don't like you much, but I'm putting up with because we're, like, on a trip here.

Yui: Wait, wait, Yumiko...

Yukino: My. It seems your impression of me is better than I thought. As for me, I hate you.

Yui: Yukinon, hold it in!

Komachi: But Rumi-chan's got a pretty strong personality. It might be hard for her to just blend in.

Hayato: Yeah, you're right. Kind of like she's disinterested, or disillusioned.

Yumiko: Disillusioned? More like she's looking down on everyone. She got shunned because she, like, acts all, like, holier-than-thou. Just like someone else here.

Y/N: Shut your mouth.

Yumiko: Don't even get me started with you. I hate that stare of yours. You remind me of Hirma--

Y/N had enough. Hearing that name was off-limits to him. To any of the L/N family members. Standing up, he looks over at Yumiko with pure malice.

Y/N: Don't ever, ever compare me to that person. That person can die for all I care!

Yumiko: Huh? I bet you act like this because your fa--

Y/N: That man was never my father!

Startled by his tone of voice, they seemed to fear the youngest L/N. Even Yukino and Hayato, despite how much he hated his father.

Y/N hated being compared to his father. He inherited his father's green eyes, but the black hair of his mother. His father had dirty blonde hair and fairly tall in height. Y/N had inherited the looks of his father, but had his mother's height. Out of all the children, Y/N inherited the temper of his father, but nonetheless still inherited the kindness of his mother.

Y/N gets up and heads to the lodging that him and his siblings were sharing. Everyone was confused as to why Y/N had his outburst, except Yukino and Hayato. They knew the reason why as their family were friends.

Timeskip-Night

Y/N lay on the sleeping bag that they had set up. It was hard for him to sleep. He slowly got up, carefully making his way to the door and opened it as quietly as possible.

Strolling through the forest, he found a clearing. He sat down to the closest tree and leaned up against it. He started to cry as he remembered one of his earliest memories of his mother's kindness.

Flashback

An eight-year old Y/N was sitting in his mother's lap, reading as the two were sitting in the living room.

Setsuna was in her own room, drawing as it was her passion. Itsuki was already a smart boy, in high school and studying for a prep school to get in so he could learn all about engineering or somewhere there in general. Some people found it odd that the son of a L/N, who was a politician was studying to get into an engineering class for university, thinking that Itsuki would go down the same path as his father.

But Itsuki had other plans. He aimed to be different from his father, or rather that's his goal. As Y/N was reading happily through his picture book, Sarashiki, his mother, was running her hand through her son's hair.

Y/N: Ne, Okaa-san...

Sarashiki: Hmm? What is it sweetie?

Y/N: Why is Otou-san never home?

She tensed at the question. For some reason, everytime her husband looked at their children, he gained a rather disappointed look. She was confused as to why. Was it perhaps that their children were not following in his footsteps.

She looked at her son, who only had a pleading face. She smiled as she kissed her son's forehead.

Sarashiki: My son, whatever happens to me, promise me you'll always smile. Promise me to stay happy. Do you understand?

Y/N: Yes mommy.

Sarashiki: (smiles) That's my little boy.

She kissed her son's head as Y/N smiled brightly, continuing to read his picture book.

Flashback End

Y/N pulled out a photo from his pocket. It was a family photo, but the area that had his father was ripped.

He brushed his thumb over his mother's face as a single tear fell onto the photo. He heard footsteps coming towards him and he wiped his tears away, hastily putting away the photo back into his pocket.

Looking up, he sees Yukinoshita with a concerned look on her face.

Y/N: Oh, it's just you.

Yukino: I thought I was the only one here. Sorry, I'll be going now.

Y/N: You're not going to sit?

Yukino: You don't mind?

Y/N: Not really.

Taking his offer, Yukino sits down next to the L/N. The two stare at the stars above them in the twilight sky.

Yukino: This is very reminiscent.

Y/N: Hmm? How so?

Yukino: When we were children and whenever you visited my house, when everyone went to sleep, we'd stay all night and we'd stare up at the stars together. Just the two of us.

Y/N hums, signalling he remembers. Not knowing what she was doing, she leaned her head on his shoulder. Y/N didn't mind and leaned his head on hers.

Yukino: Do you...still...?

Y/N: What kind of question is that? Of course I don't. I'll never forgive him. I don't care if he doesn't care about me, but I'll never forgive him as he was never there for kaa-san.

She had no control of her actions and she moved her hand down to his. Y/N turns his hand over and he grips her hand and she grips it as well.

The two began to move their heads towards one another. Lips inches apart as their breaths mixed. They leaned forward and she closed her eyes until she opened them. The L/N stopped doing what he was doing and realized what both of them were doing. They were about to kiss.

"Is this love?" is what Y/N thought. He was confused as to how love worked. Both of them had huge blushes on their faces. Y/N had his hand on her face as the other was holding her hand. Yukino's other hand was resting on his chest. In this awkward situation, they didn't know what to do.

Yukino was the first to get up and she looked at the green eyed boy with embarrassment.

Yukino: I-I'm...I'm sorry!

She had run off and the L/N was confused. He didn't know how to respond. He kept touching his lips. They would have made contact, had they not realized what they were doing. But they did.

Y/N: Damn...I'm thinking to hard about this... What the hell is wrong with me?

He got up and went back to his lodge, laying back down on his sleeping bag. He slept, but it wasn't a pleasant sleep. Rather it was filled with questions and even more conflicted feelings that needed to be answered.
