CHAPTER EIGHT
SWEET JACK AND ROSE SHIT
The group had discussed and decided to go and pay Melaina's elder friend early tomorrow because she was only back in town tonight.
So for the meantime, they were all on standby in case something came up.
Harley and Melaina ( accompanied by Cosmo ) were taking a walk around Blue Valley while Kai, Daisy and Marty were doing a little more searching around Blue Valley for clues.
"Can we get some food? I'm starving." Harley suggested making Melaina agree with her.
The two walked into Richies and took a seat at an open booth. Across the diner they spotted her former teammates across the diner and felt their stares.
Courtney waved awkwardly at the two, who waved back. The blonde pointed at the cat on the floor, who was currently grooming herself. Melaina looked down in confusion and pursed her lips when she saw Cosmo.
She hadn't even realised that the cat was still following her. She shrugged her shoulders before picking up the cat and placing her on her seat by the wall.
"Be quiet okay." She whispered to the cat who nodded in response, shocking the curly haired girl a bit before refocusing her attention on Harley.
"She followed us?" The red head asked with a laugh.
"Yeah I guess she did." Melaina answered as she stroked the ginger cat before Maria came.
After the two ordered their food Melaina noticed a big book on the table where her former team were sitting.
Cosmo poked her thigh. "What?" She whispered to the cat who turned her head to the JSA table. "What about them?"
Harley watched curiously as the younger girl talked to the cat.
Cosmo twitched her ear and somehow Melaina understood. "No! I'm not going to listen in on them." She whisper yelled.
"What does the cat want you to do?" Harley asked with a laugh.
"Listen in on them." Melaina answered as she looked at the group, Harley followed her eyes and saw who she was looking at.
"That just looks like an old book." Harley pointed out. "But old books mean that they're probably looking for something."
"Or someone." Melaina added. "Do you think they know about Eclipso?"
"Maybe, I mean you said that Courtney has been looking under rocks for someone to fight. Maybe she finally looked under the right rock." Harley said as the two locked eyes with the group.
Well Courtney, Rick and Josie in particular. Courtney sent them a an awkward wave while the latter two glared. Josie looked pissed as usual but Rick looked more saddened than angry, which was odd for him.
Harley glared at the three but Melaina waved back before locking eyes with Josie and Rick, she frowned and turned back to her table.
"They seem...nice." Harley commented as their food came.
"Thanks Maria." Melaina said to the woman.
"No problem hun." She said as she put then circular tray under her arm and glanced between the duo and the group. "Is everything okay between you and your friends? If you don't mind me asking."
"Don't worry, I'm just distancing myself from them for a while. There's just a lot happening right now." Melaina answered as she felt her heart rate speed up making Cosmo nudge her softly with her paw, calming her down immediately and making her smile and stroke the cat.
Maria smiled at her before walking away to get another order. The two began to eat their fries and milkshakes when Harleys phone began to blow up.
Melaina read the name on the red heads screen.
Rick Flag
"You saved your dad as his name." Melaina stated as the two looked at the name of the caller.
"Yeah, what do you save your dad as?"
"Water bender." The curly haired girl answered before taking a bite of a fry, CJ wore a puzzled expression. "Because he's Atlantean." She whispered making the the red head let out a chuckle.
"Sure he's my dad but I barely see the guy." CJ pointed out before eating a fry herself. "And now he's suddenly back as if everything is normal and it's the most annoying shit in the world and now with this whole Eclipso situation, he'll become over protective." She whispered the last bit.
That made Melaina's thoughts shift. "You don't think that this Eclipso thing is like world threatening or anything like that?"
"I've had my fair share of big bads." Harley started.
"You became Phoenix when you were thirteen because of a Metahuman apocalypse. You did what you had to do." Melaina explained.
"Yeah and I know that. When I started off I was a scrawny preteen who was about to finish junior high when everything started to go to shit. Next thing I knew, I was fighting with a bunch of kids older than me, way more different than me with superpowers but I was the most experienced." Harley explained before eating another fry.
"I mean I've been on this job for four years with all five of them, I've watched some of them graduate, even become parents. I mean I'm seventeen in a few days and a godmother already." Harley added with a laugh.
"That sounds amazing."
"It is. All I'm saying is that throughout all of these years. We stuck together. Fought every single bad guy that came our way as a team no matter how pissed we got at each other, we stood side by side through everything. If the JSA is trying to find Eclipso, then that means that this probably worse than we thought. If he's as powerful as we the books say then maybe you should fix things with the JSA."
"Oh for Zeus's sake I haven't even been gone for 24 hours." The curly haired girl huffed before sipping her milkshake
"I know and I'm sorry for suggesting it especially now but I'm gonna be very blunt with you. I've never faced anyone like Eclipso and even though we've formed this group of badasses. You are a combo of the most powerful species on the planet, I'm a meta and whatever the hell my mother was before the particle accelerator explosion, Daisy is the demigoddess of light, Martina and Kai are freaking magicians and we've got your water bending and lasso throwing family as backup." Harley added.
"Your mother literally has fire and heat powers not to mention she's a telepath." Melaina pointed out.
"All I'm saying is that Eclipso is probably a billion times more powerful than any of us combined. And going into a fight like that should not be done with anything weighing on your shoulders. Someone might get hurt."
"Ceej don't say that-"
"Eclipso probably isn't afraid of doing anything crazy. One of the scariest moments in my four years of Phoenix was when Axel was kind of on his death bed. He got injured and almost died and that's when I truly realised how dangerous this life was but I went on because Central City needed some heroes. Going into a fight like this can be very unpredictable and I promise you that you'll regret it if you don't fix things with them, especially if they get hurt."
Cosmo stroked her head against her waist to help calm the brown skinned girl down.
"I don't only mean your friends you know, I also mean the boy you're crazy for and haven't seen for almost seven months. It's not the right time for him to know no matter how much you want to. If I were you I'd make sure that he isn't in town for when things get crazy."
"And I think I know who just to call."
Melaina took out her phone and scrolled through her phone to find the contact 'Bruce.'

After an hour long call with the well known billionaire and former vigilante the girl had made arrangements for the Mahkents.
Now the next step came to actually talk to them about said arrangements. During the hour the JSA had left Richies and Daisy had joined the two at the diner and now the three were in Harleys '57 Bel Air driving to the Mahkent household.
Melaina sat in the passengers seat and stared out the window as they drove through the town.
"Melaina I'm all for some sweet Jack and Rose shit but are you sure you want to talk to the parents of the guy your team killed?" The half British girl said bluntly.
"I have to. I won't even have to talk to Cameron. See problem solved."
"Melaina you know you can't avoid him forever. He's been back for days now." Harley started as the car slowed down at a crosswalk.
"I know but I just need them out of Blue Valley." Melaina responded as they drove off again.
After a few more minutes of driving the trio reached their destination. Harley parked the car in front of the main gate.
"Call us if you need anything." Daisy told the girl as she got out the car, she nodded to the two before walking up the drive way.
Melaina walked up the drive way as she felt her heart beating in her chest. The clicking sounds of her boots could be heard as she walked on bricks towards the mansion.
The curly haired girl fielded with the squishy parts of her bomber jacket as she faces the set of concrete stairs.
She let out a sigh before beginning her climb towards the door. She began to mumble and rehearse the things she would say to the old couple.
She made a fist and raised it to the wooden door as she got to the top. Before she could lay a hand on the door it was yanked open by Cameron's grandfather.
"What are you doing here?" The old man spat at the girl.
"I just want to talk." Melaina pleaded.
"You did plenty when you killed my son!"
"Sofus... Mr Mahkent please!" She pleaded again as the man began to close the door.
"Let her in Sofus. She'd only come here if it was important." The soft voice of Lilly Mahkent told him from inside the home making him open the door and letting him in.
She took a deep breathe as she stuffed her hands into her pockets and walked inside.
She followed the couple to the dining room and sat down at the table. The two glared at her as they sat across from her making her gulp.
"Where's Cameron?" She asked the two.
"He's painting the Mural. He won't be here for awhile." Lilly answered. "Why are you here child."
"Blue Valley isn't safe anymore. You two and Cameron need to leave as soon as possible-" she started.
"Woah, Melaina slow down." Sofus told the girl.
"Some old JSA bad guy has been let out of his hole and I don't know how to find him yet. But I really just think that you three should be as far away from Blue Valley as possible." Melaina explained making the two share a look.
"Where should we go?" Lilly questioned making Melaina pull out a white business card with a number written in black on the back.
"If you decide to leave, call this number and he'll make sure that everything is ready for you. From transport to the roof over your heads." She explained as she handed the old woman the card.
The couple looked at the number as Melaina stood up from her seat and began to walk over to the door.
"Cameron misses you." Sofus blabbed out making the atlantean freeze in her place.
The last person she wanted to see or talk about was just mentioned. "Then you know why I can't see him."
"He needs to see you. He knows that you were the one who's been putting flowers on Jordan's grave while we've been gone." Lilly informed her making her turn around to face them.
"I don't deserve to see him. After everything that's happened." She took a deep breath before wiping a tear away. "I love your grandson so much but he needs to stay safe." Lilly and Sofus shared a look before the girl let out a small smile, turned around and walked back to the big wooden door.
As she walked down the drive way, she was about to turn a corner before she felt a strong arm on her shoulder. Out of habit the girl grabbed the arm and flipped the person over her shoulder and slamming them onto the ground. She backed away quickly when she realised who it was.
"I thought you loved surprises." Cameron groaned in pain as Melaina helped him to his feet. "I guess those classes your aunts gave you paid off."
"I am so sorry." She said as she checked his hands before looking into his eyes, she froze as she felt her heart speed up. "Hi." was all she managed to say.
"Hey." He responded, just a speechless, ignoring the conversation he had just overheard.
"I thought you were busy with the Mural?" She stuttered.
"Yeah but I left something here that I needed to get." Cameron explained. "What are you doing here? Not that I don't love seeing you."
"I actually came here to uhh talk your grandparents. About something you'll find out about later."
"Is it a surprise of some sort?" The boy teased.
The girl frowned a bit before taking his hands in hers making him soften his eager eyes. "It'll shock you yeah, it really will." Melaina quivered making the boy cup her face.
"Hey hey hey, what's wrong?" He asked as he wiped away the tears that had spilled from her eyes.
"Nothing...nothing. There's just some stuff going on at home. I'll be fine." Melaina assured making him pull her into a hug.
The feeling of his arms around her and hers around his neck as she nuzzled her head into his neck while he peppered kisses on her head made her feel better but worse.
She missed this, his kisses, his hugs, his smile. Just him. She just wanted her best friend/boyfriend to be safe but as much as it killed her, he was much safer away from her.
As she pulled away she took his head in her hands and got up on the tips of her toes to pressing a lingering kiss on his forehead. She pulled away with tears streaming down her face.
"Talk later?" Melaina suggested as she quickly wiped away the tears.
"Yeah sure." He answered as he looked at her face, he could tell that something else was wrong but he decided not to pry, he just gave her another kiss on her forehead before she left, watching her walk down the driveway he knew something was off he could feel it.
And he was going find out what.
