chapter 25

real life 

all the people in the airport hall jumps when they hear Yasmin screaming Max's name and running to hold her. the girl laughs while she's saying 'happy birthday' again and again. 

- hey, Yaz, i know you love her so bad, but we'd like to hug her too, says a voice behind Yasmin. 

when she turns around, Max sees Kit smiling, his cap upside down on his head. she smiles too and laughs : 

- impatient boy, d'you know i saw you two weeks ago ? 

- too long, answers Kit, taking her in his arms. 

Max knows he doesn't spin her because of all their friends behind them. after a few seconds, he drops her, uncomfortable, and goes to greet Rhea, who was already in nyc. confused, Max hugs Joe, Corinna, Bash, Kizzy and Will. then, they all walk to Max's, who lives near the airport, very excited, but a bit tired. apparently not so much, because they are all running around dragging their suitcases, while Max is walking behind them, talking with Kit. 

- and so, they won't be anyone else except us tonight ? asks the boy. 

- no. i don't really get along with a lot of people, to be honest. except you, i have only two real friends, but i like it like that. 

- and where are they ? 

- Marzia is with her family in italy and Simon is on holiday in la. 

- they left you alone ? 

- why do you criticize my friends, Kit ? 

- i don't, laughs the boy. i just... i'm just suprised that they don't even here for your birthday. 

- okay, you're clearly criticizing my friends. anyway, i don't care if they don't here. i mean, i miss them, but i have Will, you, Bash, Rhea and all these stupid people so...

- oh, you're happy to see me ? asks him with a mocking smile. 

- shut up, laughs Max, hitting his soulder. and you, how are you in your life ? 

- pretty good, i guess. there's nothing new, so that's okay. 

- yeah, i'll believe that there's nothing really exciting in Kit Connor's life. 

- that's true ! to be honest, london is getting boring. 

she looks at him and anwers : 

- i througt you liked this town. i can remember, you told me you liked it. 

- hum, maybe i changed my mind ? 

- i don't believe you, smiles Max. 

- okay, don't believe me, i don't care. 

they laugh, watching each other, until Max says, really fast : 

- i'll say something stupid, but i missed you. and you probably already know it because i couldn't stop reply. 

Kit doesn't answer, watching the girl with a little smile. 

- what ? 

- i missed you too. so much. 

Max smiles too and when they're finally arrive at Max's, she opens the door and everyone enters. Kizzy and Joe sit in the sofa, Bash, Kit and Corinna look the view from the living room windows, Yasmin goes to the bathroom to change clothes while Rhea, Max and Will ask to everyone what they want to drink. after few minutes, Yaz apears with an amazing black dress, and they all go to sit on the sofa to drink and talk. 

- so, what did you do today ? asks Will to her best friend. 

- hum, i've called my friends...

- wait, you really have friends except them ? interrupts Joe. 

- shut up. and, after, i went shopping with Rhea. who bought a lot of clothes. 

- that's not true ! i only bought a jacket, a jean, two dresses and... okay, i did. 

everyone laugh, drinkink, for a little while. when Max check her phone, it's already 1 am. she has two messages from his mom, one from Simon and one missed call from Marzia. 

- hey, says Corinna. we're finally here and you're still on your phone ? 

- yeah, sorry. i'm so happy to have you all here today ! 

- and we are happy to being here too, answers Sebastian, sit next to her. 

she smiles and Will continues : 

- yeah, and we have a present. 

- what !? i told you i didn't want any presents ! 

- and we ignored you, answers Kit smiling while Kizzy stand up to search a thing in their suitcase. 

they take a small envelope and give it to Max. wher they sit again, they say : 

- okay, in this envelope, you have two weeks of work. we didn't sleep, or a bit, but we are really really proud to give you this. 

- guys, you...

- shut up and open this fucking thing, interrupts Will. 

when Max does, she founds a piece of paper where all of her freinds have wrote a little text for her. she smiles and says : 

- oh that's cute ! thank you. 

- there's something else, says Bash. 

she looks again it the envelope and at the bottom, she sees a little key. when she takes it and looks her friends, confused, Yasmin explains : 

- two years ago, i inherited my grandmother's london flat and i didn't know what to do with that. so, we have completely redecorated it and... it's yours, now. 

- so you'll have something where live when you come in london, and no more stupid excuses for not coming to see us, adds Corinna. 

Max doesn't answers, looking at the key. she has a flat in london. she has a flat in nyc and in london, and she will be able to see her friends so much more. 

- that's... that's amazing guys. omg come here. 

she opens her arms, crying, and everyone come to hug her. 

- i love you. i love you so so much, i'm so lucky to have you. 

but maybe it was too beautiful to be true, because as soon as everyone is sat, Sebastian grabs her face to kiss her. 

but the kiss doesn't last long, because Kit doesn't loose any seconds to stand up and punch Sebastian in his face. the boy falls to the floor, half stunned. 

- what are you doing !? shouts Max. 

- hum, i... tries Kit. 

around them, nobody's listenning, they all ran to Bash to see if he was okay. Max grabs Kit's hand to bring him in the nearest room , the bathroom. 

- why did you do that ? asks Max, a bit shouting. 

- why did i do that ? answers Kit, angry. because he said that he didn't love you, because Joe and Will said that he didn't love you, because you didn't seem in love with him, and because the boys said that you were in love with me, says him really fast. 

Max, looking at his eyes, sees them becoming sad. she doesn't understand anything anymore.

- but you've never act like you were loving me ! 

they both shouting, right now. 

- what ? are you kidding ? i've never been as in love as i am, and i showed you this. everyone saw it, except you, because you're so fucking blind ! 

- maybe you could just tell me that ! you could've spoken, for once. 

- and how could I have said that ? how could i say that i am so jealous of everyone since the very first day ? how could i say that, for a while, i hated Will, Bash and Yaz for being so much closer with you than i was ? how could i say that i am so in love with you for too long and i'm so tired ? 

- i don't know, Kit, says Max, stoping shouting. 

lost, she continues : 

- it's your job to deal with it, because i already had to do that. 

- yeah i know but... god, you won't understand. 

his eyes are almost crying now, and Max is pretty sure that hers are too. 

- i'll understand. i promise. 

- i am so tired, you can't even know. i'm so tired of being jealous of all my friends, and i hate myself for that. 

- but why are jealous ? you know that i...

- because you're the most amazing girl i've ever met, Max ! souts the boy. 

the tears run down his cheeks.

- because you're so beautiful, funny, real, everyone wants you, everyone wants someone like you in their life, and they're all braver than me, because when you're around i can't say a word, i can't even breathe ! and i am so afraid to loose you, so afraid of not being enough. the day you told me you went to the Harry's show with your friend, i didn't sleep, because i couldn't stop wondering what i was for you. and i'm still wondering that. 

Max doesn't answers anything, looking at the floor. Kit, who's crying really hard, opens the door to leave the room, but Max grabs his hand to prevent it from coming out. when he turns around, she looks him in the eyes and just say : 

- hate you so much. 

confused, Kit doesn't even have time to answer, because Max's lips are already on his. 

things are finally getting serious!
