chapter fifty one
Winter was now completely installed at Hogwarts. Nobody dared going out in the cold anymore and so the Ravenclaw common room was crowded. Especially since it was the last day of school and everyone was relaxing. Except for Adena. The young girl was lying in her bed, starting her holidays homework. She was reading the chapter on Inferius in her DADA book as it would be the new subject. 'Corpses, dead bodies', 'bewitched to do a Dark wizard's bidding', read the girl. She had heard of that but reading a definition was really horrifying. Even dead they couldn't rest in peace, thought the brunette in empathy. She kept reading for a while but was interrupted when the door of her bedroom burst open. She looked up from the book to see Millie, Eugenia and Jade looking at her, smiling knowingly.
"Did something happen?" simply muttered the brunette.
"Be my lab-rat."
"Your what?"
"I wanna do experiments on you."
She eyed Millie suspiciously. "For what?"
"For your hair."
"What with my hair..."
"You know my mum cuts Muggles' hair and so she taught me a spell to make hair straight."
"I still don't understand..." murmured the young Ravenclaw.
"She wants to make your hair straight of course!" exclaimed Eugenia.
"Uh? I don't want to!"
"You don't have choice," concluded Jade.
"But we have to attend Slug Club later on, and what if you mess up-!"
"I'm sure it'll please your boy," said the redhead smirking as she dragged her out of bed. Adena just got time to leave her glasses on her bed as she was forced to walk to the bathroom.
"Okay, now close your eyes." Adena's worried gaze crossed Millie's in the mirror of the bathroom. She had her wand ready and the girls beside them had evil grins on their faces. She ended up closing her eyes hesitantly.
"Relax idiot, you won't be bald."
"Well I'm not sure- ", she was cut off by Millie's voice saying behind her saying 'Recta Capillis', then some gasps were heard. "Can I open my eyes now?"
She didn't wait for an answer, and her eyes opened quickly. Adena looked at her reflection with wide eyes. Her hands flew up to her strands of straight hair. She had an almost horrified expression on her face, visibly shocked by the change.
"It looks longer. And it's smoother," said Eugenia as all three girls started touching her brown hair.
"Good job Millie. Adena, what's your opinion?"
"Eh... not that bad I guess."
"Yes. Mission succeeded," exclaimed Millie.
"Let's prepare up now."
"Wait! Millie, how long will it last?"
"Hm... I'm not sure..."
"Uh? I can't stay with that hair forever."
"It's okayyy, now let's grab some dresses," said Eugenia, dragging the girl out of the bathroom. "Here's a royal blue dress for you. These are the ones I bought over the summer."
Eugenia brought the two dresses out of her luggage. Hers was a purplish velvet dress while Adena's was made of a silky fabric. Both had long sleeves since it was better for winter. The redhead girl made her way to the bathroom as the brunette changed into her room. She put on some tights as well before putting on her usual pair of brown loafers shoes. They had a little platform and Eugenia would often make fun of her, saying she just wanted to look taller. She wasn't against the idea of looking one inch taller of course.
When Eugenia finished, Adena went into the bathroom to brush her hair. It felt easier now that it was completely straight. A strand of hair was falling on the side of her face, so she tied it with Regulus' hairclip. She would rarely separate herself from it. It was so pretty but so significative as well.
The two girls arrived rather early at Slughorn's dinner. Only Lily Evans, Regulus, Evan Rosier and a fifth year Adena couldn't remember the name of, were there. And of course, Slughorn. It must have been awkward, but the teacher welcomed them with a bright smile nonetheless, his joyful tone never fading.
"Ah, Miss Hawlins, Miss Winsten! Good evening!"
Everyone turned their head towards the new guests and the two Ravenclaws were met with pairs of wide eyes. These were people Adena knew, except for the fifth year so the slight transformation in her hair was a little shocking. They made their way to the table, Adena sitting beside Regulus as usual.
"Adena! Your hair looks so pretty!" said Lily.
"Thanks."
"I love it. What did you do?" then added the older girl.
"Hm, it's Millie. She used some charm I can't remember the name of, but you should ask her."
"Well, it's really nice." And Eugenia obviously agreed. Unconsciously Adena turned towards Regulus who wasn't looking at her.
"Do you like it?" murmured the girl.
"No," was Regulus' immediate response, not looking the slightest bit interested in her hair. Adena looked at him offended and some chuckles could be heard around the table.
"Oh, this is not a very gentlemanly behavior my boy," said Slughorn with a laugh.
"It's okay sir. I have other fans," hissed Adena haughtily.
"Black, you should use this charm too," Evan Rosier muttered teasingly at his side but it was audible for everyone.
"No," said both Adena and Regulus at the same time. Evan and Eugenia chuckled at this.
She knew fairly well Regulus wasn't being mean, it was just him, he wouldn't admit he liked her hair in front of others. Or he really disliked it and chose to annoy her. Luckily, that little bickering made the atmosphere less tense.
Other people joined in and the dinner finally started. And Adena and Regulus also started chatting with each other.
"I have to patrol tonight, you didn't forget?" whispered the girl to the boy at her side as she inclined her head towards him.
"Of course, I didn't," was his reply.
"I have to be sure idiot."
"Hush silly." She furrowed her brows before lightly kicking his shin under the table. He turned his head in her direction. Adena had her eyes on the teacher, eating quietly, feigning to listen to the boring rambling. Regulus sighed and decided he would deal with her after dinner.
When it was finally ending, the students started getting up.
"Eugenia, go without me, and tell Noah I won't be long please!"
"Okay don't worry. Don't fool around children," said the redhead with a smirk, a suggestive look could be seen through her glasses.
"Hm."
"Good night students, and have good holidays!" exclaimed Slughorn's voice as everyone started getting out.
Adena and Eugenia parted ways at the exit. And so, the brunette turned towards her boyfriend. She grabbed his hand and started walking.
"Will you stop sulking?"
"I am not sulking."
The girl laughed before asking curiously. "Do you really dislike my straight hair that much?"
"Hm, no. I just like your natural hair better."
"You should have said so from the beginning idiot."
"Hush silly."
"Stop being mean Regulus." And she pushed him lightly, but the boy didn't even flinch, he just scoffed.
"You insulted me first and you kicked me."
They were now reaching a bench in an empty corridor, so they made a little pause there.
"I was joking..." murmured the girl innocently which made Regulus roll his eyes.
After a while he said these words without looking at her, "You actually look pretty." And his fingers ran through her surprisingly silky long hair.
"Thank you. You look good too I must admit."
He turned his head towards her and grinned. She grinned again. That was such an uncommon conversation, she almost wanted to laugh. But she remembered suddenly that it was their last day together.
"Tomorrow we're coming back home," sighed the brunette.
"I know."
"I don't want to." Usually what Adena meant by that was that she didn't want to go home to her parents but right now, she just didn't want to leave Regulus.
"It'll be short."
"You won't forget me uh?"
The raven-haired male turned towards her, smiling at her. "Of course, I won't." And she smiled back, pleased by his answer. She reduced her smile to her small grin as she got lost in his beautiful pair of grey irises. Regulus slowly leaned in to capture her lips in a light kiss. It was chaste but full of love, like always with his kisses. He cupped her cheek with one of his hand, caressing it softly with thumb and it made the girl smile against his lips. Adena was melting into his touch, it always made her feel some type of way. When he leaned back, way too soon for her liking, he was smiling tenderly at her.
"I'll miss you." And then he placed a light kiss on her cheek, his lips barely touching her skin. He continued the same type of kisses down her jaw and her neck, making her giggle before she could control herself.
"It tickles..." she whined as she placed her hand in his dark curls.
"That was my goal," replied the boy as he faced her again.
She kissed him on the lips one last time before standing up. "Noah must be waiting. See you tomorrow."
He planted a final kiss on her cheek with a grin before leaving.
