A NEW ERA OF FORMULA ONE
Published February 27, 2008
THE 2008 SEASON OF FORMULA ONE IS RIGHT AROUND THE CORNER. For the current drivers, this was nothing new to them, as testing had just wrapped up and they were getting ready for the first round. Though, for one team, a couple of new additions will be joining the grid of talented racers on their journey to become world champion.
Joining the Bugatti F1 team are Caio Senna, the son of late Ayrton Senna da Silva, and Dennis Kaufmann. Both will be moving up from GP2 and joining the drivers on the grid for the Formula One season. The eighteen-year-old Senna will be replacing Cyrille Clermont, while the nineteen-year-old Kaufmann will replace Edward Bailey. Though, it seems that the two young drivers will not be on each other's good side nor working together as teammates. While partners on the same team, the Brazilian Senna and the Korean-American Kaufmann have had a long standing rivalry since their karting days.
Their rivalry had only further divided them as during a karting championship race in 2003, Senna was pushed off the track by Kaufmann and subsequently disqualified from the race.
The announcement of Bugatti having a new lineup was made during a press conference last winter at the end of the 2007 season. The reveal came as a surprise to many, who had not expected the retirement of Cyrille Clermont and Edward Bailey at the beginning of the season. But with these new talents, who knows if Bugatti will reign victorious in this year's World Driver's Championship and World Constructors' Championship?
During Cyrille Clermont's Formula One career, he has earned a total of one-hundred-seven pole finishes and ninety-two podiums, while his teammate Edward Bailey had earned a total of ninety-three poles and ninety-nine podiums. During Caio Senna's karting career, he had earned a total of sixty-three poles and thirty-seven podiums up to now, while Dennis Kaufmann has earned a total of forty-four poles and twenty-five podiums.
Will the new drivers be able keep Bugatti in the top scoring positions? And what will this mean for the future of Formula One? Will Caio Senna be a world-renowned driver like his father? Will the Senna-Kaufmann rivalry eventually be put to an end?
Only time will tell.
