A hard days night
Season one Episode one

Max was getting ready for work, today was the day that the new Interns started and she was excited to see who they were going to be. She already gave her daughter some breakfast and gotten her almost ready to go to the daycare that the hospital provided.

"Are you almost ready to go Mae" Max asked her six year old daughter, she bent down to her daughters level so she could brush her hair.

"Hey Mae, Are you getting ready for today? You look so pretty" Derek said from behind Max, she turned around to look at her friend confused as to why he was in her house.

"Shep why are you here so early?" Max asked picking up her daughter so they could leave.

"I was actually just across the street" Derek told her, picking up a piece of toast and taking a bite out of it.

"Well you stink so take a shower, change or whatever. I'm leaving I'll see you there" Max told him kissing his cheek then walking out the door.

Max put her daughter in the car seat and walked around to the front seat, she looked at her daughter through the rear view mirror, wondering how Mark could be fine not knowing who is daughter is, so when Max didn't hear a reply by the second week she decided that she should move on for her and her daughters sake.

The doctor parked her car in her parking space and turned off her car, she walked to the side that Maeve was at and she unbuckled her car seat and picked her up.

"Are you ready to play with some friends?" Max asked her daughter, she was so lucky that Maeve turned out the way she did, she was the perfect child.

"Yeah mommy, I wanna see Jake" Maeve replied back putting her head on her moms shoulder.

Max walked into the hospital and spotted Miranda Bailey "Miranda! Hey how are you this morning?" She asked her friend, and of course she knew the answer, it was new intern day and knowing Miranda she was not excited.

"Like you don't already know the answer to that, snotty Interns with there snotty personal problems, so excited for that!" Miranda said faking excitement, she turned around and cause Maeve and her expression immediately changed "Hi Mae Mae, how are you today, I bet you're just perfect"

Maeve laughed at Miranda, holding her arms out so Miranda could take her "I've got to take her to daycare, mind walking with me?" Max asked her very best friend Miranda who was making faces at Maeve who was in her arms.

"Of course I can spare a few, spending time with your child is going to be the highlight of my day" Miranda replied and they both walked over the the elevator so they could drop off Maeve.

Max was on the helicopter pad waiting for the doctor that paged her, she stood next to Miranda and her interns

"Izzie Stevens, Meredith Grey, Christina Yang and George O'Malley" Miranda said pointing as she said there names. The helicopter landed and they all shield there eyes just in case.

"What do we have?" She questioned as soon has the helicopters door opened.

"Katie Bryce. Fifteen year old female with new-onset seizures, intermittent for the past week. IV lost en route. Started grand Mal seizing as we descended" He said taking her out of the helicopter.

They reached the room for the patient and the interns transferred Katie from the gurney to the bed but Katie starts to seize again.

"Get her on her side, Dr. Stevens, 10 mg, diazepam IM" Max said to one of the interns as she and Miranda watched them scurry to help the girl.

"No, No! The white lead is on the right - righty whitey, smoke over fire!" Miranda yelled at the interns.

Max watched as Meredith hurried to fix the mistake as Izzie prepped the syringe and George lays out the tools to start the IV, Max nodded among them, watching every move.

"Hey! A large bore IV. Don't let the blood hemolyze. Let's go guys! 10 mg diazepam IM!" Max shouted making sure the Interns were listening to her, as soon as Meredith sedated Katie she stopped seizing.

"Heard we had a wet fish on dry land" Leo, Max's brother said walking in, "That can't be fun" Miranda hands Leo Katie Bryce's chart to look over

"Sure do, Dr. Mallard" Miranda said looking at the patient.

Leo looked around the room "Let's shotgun her Dr. Bailey" He said clapping his hands and stepping back to let Miranda explain.

"That means every test in the book; C.T., CBC, CHEM-7, Tox Screen," Miranda explains "Christina, you're on labs, George patient work ups, Meredith get Katie down for a CT, she's your responsibility now."

"What about me" Izzie asked Miranda before she walks out of the room, Miranda looks back at the shiny girl.

"Honey, you get to do rectal exams"

Max stopped Meredith on the way out "Don't worry, I'll also be with you so if you have any questions please ask" Meredith smiled at her walking away.

Max was sitting with her daughter at the daycare during her lunch break, she got a peanut butter and jelly for her daughter and a turkey sandwich for herself, she grabbed half of the slice of PB&J and put it in Maeve's hand so she could eat it.

"So guess what I found out today" Derek said setting his tray on the table, Max looked at him giving him a nod "That girl I picked up at the bar, she works here, she's an intern"

Max started laughing immediately "No way, who is it!" Max asked covering her mouth so she doesn't spit food everywhere.

"Meredith Grey" Was all he said for Max to start laughing again.

"God Shep, I told you this would come back and bite you in the ass" Max told him, this whole conversation cheered her up a bit.

"Ass" Maeve said taking a Cheeto and putting it in her mouth, Derek and Max looked at each other surprised "Sweetheart, you cant say that, now tell your godfather goodbye"

Derek took that as a hint to leave the two girls alone, he walked off taking his tray with him still laughing on the way out.

Once Max was finished with her lunch she walked down to Katie's room to introduce herself some she didn't have a chance earlier, she knocked on the door before walking in.

"Hello Katie, I'm Dr. Mallard, I'm one of the Doctors on your case and I just wanted to stop by and see how you were doing" Max said gently stepping closer to Katie's bed.

"I'm bored" that's all Katie said, Max looked up at the tv that was playing, and she nodded her head leaving.

Max was sitting in the on-call room when she was informed that Katie Bryce's labs came out clear, which was a good thing but they still didn't know what was causing the seizures, she was also informed that Katie's parents were here so Max walked up to Katie's room to wait for the parents.

"Katie, honey. Mom and Dad are here." Mrs Bryce said rushing to her daughters side, Max gives a nod to Meredith telling her that she can talk to the parents.

"They gave her a sedative for the CT so she's a little groggy" Meredith explained in a way that the parents will understand. 

"Will she be alright?" Mrs. Bryce asked Meredith rubbing her daughters head for comfort.

"Our doctor at home said that she might need an operation, is that true?" Mr. Bryce said as soon as his wife stopped talking.

"What kind of operation?" Mrs. Bryce asked worried for her daughter.

Max noticed the panicked look of Merediths face and stepped in "We haven't found anything yet that shows why she's having these seizures but I promise as soon as I know something I will come find you"

Max left the Bryce's along with there daughter and went to find her brother, she heard he was letting a low grade intern scrub in on surgery.

She saw her brother blonde head and ran up to him
"Dr. Mallard, I heard you were letting George O'Malley scrub in with you today"

Her brother sighed pinching the bridge of his nose
"Dr. Bailey got to you didn't she"

Max shrugged her shoulder not selling out her friend, "Okay look, as soon as I let George scrub in the rest of the interns will work harder and when the interns work harder they become the best, we do want them to be the best right Dr. Mallard" He said in an annoyed tone, he was tired of people asking him why he chose O'Malley.

"Okay okay" Max said putting her hands up in surrender.

"Oh guess what, that new intern Christina Yang thinks I'm the best thing since sliced bread" Leo told his sister gloating, Max gave him an eye roll, she had only met Christina once but Max was positive that Yang did not say it like that.

"Oh sure, she did" Max said sarcastically, leaving her brother in the middle of the hallway.

"She did!" Leo yelled after her.

Max was checking in on her other patients when her pager beeps, she looked down to read what it said  '911 Katie Bryce' as soon as looked at it, Max started sprinting to the room.

She got there and Meredith Grey was know where to be found, she rushed to Katie's side giving Katie a second dose of Diazepam, she saw that Meredith comes walking in frozen still.

"Dr Grey! What took you so long? Get in here!" Max yelled at the intern "She's having multiple grand Mal seizures. Now how do you think we should proceed? Dr. Grey are you listening to me? She's got Diazepam, 2 mg of lorazepam, and I just gave her a second dose, Dr. Grey!"

Meredith didn't say anything shocked at what she was seeing. "Dr Grey!" Max yelled again as Katie's heart began to stop, Max shook her head at how stupid Meredith was being.

Derek walked in the room, "What the hell happened?"

"She had a siezure and her heart stopped because Dr. Grey over here couldn't figure out what do next" Max told Derek looking over at Meredith shaking her head in disappointment.

"You were supposed to be watching her" Derek yelled, unhappy that it got this bad, he pushed Meredith out of the way to check on Katie.

"I check on her and she-" Meredith started to say but Derek Interrupted her "I got her. Just - just go"

"Somebody give me her chart please!" Derek asked one of the other nurses.

Max followed Meredith out of the room.

"Why were you so late Meredith? When you get a 911 you run, you run like hell to get where you were supposed to be. So next time don't mess it up" Max said firmly, watching Meredith nod her head yes wanting this conversation to be over.

Max walked back into the room waiting for Derek to figure out why the hell this was happening, but he still had not clue.

"I think we should talk to the parents" Max told him, Derek agreed following Max to the waiting room.

"You said it was a seizure disorder. Now you're saying it isn't?" Mr. Bryce said not happy with there findings.

"I'm saying I don't know" Derek told the parents firmly so they understand what he's saying.

"Well what do you think it could be?" Mrs. Bruce asked more worried for there daughter well being.

"I don't know" was all Derek said, Max looked at him

"Mr and Mrs Bryce, right now it is unclear as to why she's having seizures, there was nothing in the scans or labs that had a clear meaning, and I get it, I do, you want to know what's going on with your baby girl but I promise you if you just give us a little more time we will figure it out" Max said trying to give the family hope and trying to ease there nerves.

They both nodded at the doctor giving her a thank you before turning away to sit on the waiting chairs.

Max and Derek walk away, giving the Bryce's there space. Max walks with Derek to Katie's room, trying to figure out what was wrong with the girl.

"What if we gathered all the surgical Interns and had them look for the answer, I mean there's 20 new interns that's twice as many brains then if it's just you and me looking" Max said after a few minutes of just sitting and staring at the patient.

"Yeah yeah, that could work" Derek said standing up fast "Page all the interns to the gathering room"

Max nodded grabbing her pager and sent out a mass text and then ran to the room.

"We're gonna do something pretty rare for surgeons, we are going to ask the interns for help, I've got a kid named Katie Bryce. Right now, she's a mystery. She doesn't respond to meds, her scans are pure, her labs are clean. But she's having seizures. Grand Mal seizures with no viable cause. She's a ticking clock- Katie's going to die if I can't make a diagnosis. Which is where you come in. We can't do this alone, I need extra eyes, extra minds. I need you to play detective, I need you to find out why Katie's seizing" Derek's said stopping to give the interns time to process the i formation.

"You're tired, you're busy, you already have more work then you can handle. I've been there, we've all been there. So we are going to offer an incentive. Whoever finds the answer gets to ride with us, if Katie needs surgery one of you gets to do something no other intern has done before, scrub in to assist on an advanced procedure. Now Dr. Bailey is going to hand out copies of Katie's chart. The clock is ticking guys, if we are going to save Katie's life, we have to do it soon" Max said finishing there idea, all the interns rushing to grab the copy so that they could figure out what's going on.

Max and Derek walked into the elevator still conversing about Katie Bryce and what they were going to do.

"Katie competes in beauty pageants" Christina said springing up form out of know where.

"I know that Dr. Yang, what are you getting at" Max said sighing, she did not have time for this.

"She has no headaches, no back pain and her CT is clean. No medical proof of an aneurysm" Christina said trying to get to the point.

"Right" Derek said from beside Max

"But what if it is an aneurysm anyway?" Christa said getting excited.

"Dr. Yang there's no indicators-" Max started to say but Yang cut her off

"She twisted her ankle a couple weeks ago practicing for the pageant." Yang started to say but then Derek cut her off

"Look, we appreciate that you are trying to help but-"

"She fell. When she twisted her ankle, she fell" Meredith said interrupting Derek

"It was no big deal. Not even a bump on the head, she got right back up, iced her ankle, felt fine. A fall so minor a doctor never even thought to mention it when I was taking her history, but she did fall." Christina said rushing for the worlds to get out.

"Do you know what the chances are that a minor fall could burst an aneurysm? One in a million. Literally" Max said explaining that it was a big leap.

"Let's go" Derek's said after looking at the disappointment on the girls face.

"Where?" Christina asked

"To find out if Katie's one in a million" Max said smiling at the girls, proud with there findings.

Max, Christina and Meredith were waiting outside the radiologist door, waiting for Derek to come out with the answer.

"Good job ladies" He said walking out of the room, the three girls got up and followed him

"She could have gone through her entire life, without it ever being a problem. One tap in the right spot"

"And it exploded" Christina said finishing the sentence

"Exactly, now I can fix it" He said snapping his fingers

"You two did amazing work today, you guys really stepped up" Max said impressed with the two interns

"Uh Dr. Mallard, Dr. Shepherd you guys said you'd pick someone to scrub in if we helped" Christina said stuttering a little bit, walking closer to the Doctors as she talked.

"Right, well we are sorry we can't take you both since it's going to be a full house" Derek said looking at the two of them "Meredith I'll see you in the O.R"

Max have Derek a look, hoping he didn't choose Meredith cause he's got a little thing for her.

Derek, Meredith and Max were scrubbing in to operate on Katie, they walked into the O.R.

"All right everybody, it's a beautiful night to save lives, let's have some fun" Derek said as the superficial nurses got Katie prepared for the surgery.

Max picked up her sleeping daughter from daycare and was walking through the hospital to her car

"Here let me take her" Derek said taking Maeve from Max's arms, Max gave Derek a silent nod and they both walked to Max's car, as Derek was putting Maeve in her car seat Max was giving him the look.

"I really hope you didn't give that surgery to Meredith because little you likes little her" Max told Derek who was still halfway in the car.

"It's not like that Max" Derek said trying to reason with her

"It sure seems like it, and every other doctor is going to assume that to, and I know you are already a respected doctor, but she's not, she's just an Intern who doesn't know what's she's doing, so if you are going to continue sleeping with that girl you better treat her like the rest of them" Max said walking to the drivers seat and got in

"Oh and are you ever going to tell me who Addison cheated on you with?" Max asked her head out the window so she could see Derek more.

"Probably not, goodnight Max, I'll see you tomorrow" He said avoiding the question and walking off.

"Night Shep! Love you!" She yelled so he could here her, ever since that night she found out that Addison cheated on Derek, he still hasn't talked about it or who the other man even was, Max would get it out of him someway or another.
