Meilani McCall sighed in content as leant her back against Isaac Lahey's bent legs as he absentmindedly braided and unbraided her hair. They were sat on the hood of Roscoe with Meilani's twin, Scott McCall, while her boyfriend, Stiles Stilinski, stood on the side of Roscoe with a map opened up in front of him and a red marker in his hand. It was the last night of the summer and the four were trying to get the last of their freedom out. They just had a few more hours before they had to head over to the high school for Senior Night where they would all sign their names on a shelf in the library that would "mark" them for the rest of their lives.
It had been a summer filled with nothing but relaxation for Meilani, which was completely unheard of. She actually got to enjoy being with her boyfriend and hanging out with all her friends. Her and Isaac got to perfect their mind sharing ability over the past few months and Isaac had abused more so in Stiles' presence just to piss him off. Something that didn't shock Meilani since the boys had been extra obnoxious around each other ever since the start of summer. Meilani had just given up at this point on trying to make the two not argue like an old married couple.
If Meilani was honest, she was just waiting for the other shoe to drop. It had been way too quiet around Beacon Hills after Kate and the Dead Pool that Meilani just knew something was coming. In her line of experience, Beacon Hills didn't necessarily settle down for this long and a bad feeling bubbled deep in her core that she couldn't shake the past few weeks. However, she tried to ignore it as much as possible because she also wanted to enjoy her few months of relaxation that she'd been dealt. As selfish as that sounds.
"Alright, so I found some cool two bedrooms in the Mission District, but they're pretty expensive," Stiles' voice broke through Meilani's thoughts and she blinked a few times, focusing back on the conversation at hand. What they were going to be doing once they graduated in June. "A couple in Haight and Ashbury. Also expensive."
"What about Berkley?" Scott asked, sitting forward to peer around Isaac and Meilani. "Don't a lot of students live around there?"
Stiles ran his red marker along the map and tapped it when he reached to that part of town. "Yeah, yeah, we could try Nob Hill, but the Jeep would probably burn through a lot of clutches."
Isaac rolled his eyes and his fingers ceased for a moment in Meilani's hair as his eyes drifted over to Stiles with a deadpan expression. "You're bringing Roscoe?"
Stiles' jaw ticked at the mere thought of leaving behind Roscoe in Beacon Hills when college came around. He pointed the marker in Isaac's direction as if trying to appear intimidating and the beta merely raised his eyebrows, his hands going back to Meilani's hair when she tapped his sneaker to keep going as it was keeping her relaxed. "Listen, buddy, Roscoe will be coming along. No one gets left behind, okay? Lydia has no problem getting into Stanford. Kira is thinking USF. Malia's, uh . . . "
"She's figuring it out," Meilani finished for Stiles with an assuring smile that their friends will all be in a close enough distance to each other. She knew Stiles worried about leaving behind his friends once they graduated in June and she'd been trying all summer to promise him that they'd all still be close and could still see each other.
"The plan is perfect, okay? I'm not letting the plan fall through," Stiles concluded sternly, determination set into his shoulders as he would stop at nothing to keep everyone together still. Like always.
"Or we could also wait until we actually get into college and then figure out where to live," Meilani suggested to her boyfriend, focusing her gaze back on the full moon that hung high in the dark sky surrounded by millions of shining stars. The light shined down perfectly on Meilani, reflecting off the darker brown color that now rested in her hair since she'd wanted a slight change with them starting their final year.
Stiles pouted and stomped his foot dramatically, reaching his hand out to squeeze his girlfriend's knee to get her attention again. "I have a vision, baby. A beautiful vision. Don't ruin my vision." He whined, earning a snort in return from Isaac at his dramatic response. "What if we checked out the East Bay? Haven't looked at Oakland yet, you know."
Meilani puffed out her cheeks and relaxed further back against Isaac's legs. All of the talk about colleges and where they would leave made her yearn for that normalcy that getting out of Beacon Hills could bring. The bad feeling only returned as she thought about the fact that they were talking freely about college and that nothing had come around yet to bite them in the ass. It was definitely an odd feeling to be so relaxed and Meilani honestly just wanted the other shoe to drop already so they can get it over with.
"Hey, you okay?" Scott asked, snapping Meilani out of her moment of thoughts once again and gaining her attention. "Are you starting to feel the full moon?"
"No. I'm just thinking again," Meilani sighed, feeling Isaac scratch her scalp comfortingly in response. She knew that he could hear her thoughts but he never said anything to her about it, knowing that Meilani would come to them whenever she was ready. He wasn't about to push the poor girl to talk about anything just yet. "
"Okay, about what?" Stiles prodded, placing down his marker and giving his girlfriend his undivided attention while he took her hand into his.
"Just . . . senior year," Meilani admitted, her thumb brushing over the back of Stiles' knuckles gently as he did the same to her hand.
Stiles squeezed Meilani's hand and shot her an easy grin. "Oh, come on, baby. Senior year . . . that's . . . that's nothing. That is going to be easy."
Meilani shook her head and pushed herself up to a sitting position, causing Isaac's hand to drop out from her hair and she turned slightly so her feet could tuck beneath her. "It's more like something Deaton told me once. You ever hear of regression to the mean?"
"No, I don't think so," Scott replied for the trio, shaking his head along with the other two boys.
"Well, basically, it was his way of saying that life can't ever be all bad or all good. You know, eventually things have to come back to the middle. So, think about the last few months. Things have been pretty good, right? Not amazing, but good."
"Yeah, but no one's tried to kill us in six months either," Isaac reminded Meilani, hoping it'd make the mood lighter.
"Honestly, that's a win, especially for you," Stiles chimed in positively.
Meilani nodded her head slowly as if telling the boys that she wasn't exactly finished just yet. "Right. We've been pretty much in the middle for a while now. Which means, at some point, the scale has to tip one way or the other. Things are gonna get really good again . . . "
Scott's face scrunched up as he realized where his twin was going with her little speech and his shoulders slumped forward, suddenly feeling the weight again. "Or really bad."
As if on cue, dark gray clouds took over the moon and a bolt lightning lit up the sky above them, causing all four of the teens to snap their attention up to the sky. If that wasn't an omen, then Meilani didn't know what was.
"You think it's been long enough?" Stiles asked, gulping as his eyes trained on the lightning bolt that slowly faded away.
"Yes!"
The four teens turned their attention to the tree behind Roscoe where they had chained up Meilani's beta, Liam Dunbar. Meilani was still trying to help Liam through his shifts during the full moons since his IED didn't necessarily help the raging anger that took over when the full moon hit. For the moment, he seemed alright and he didn't appear to be angry. Just annoyed that Stiles and Isaac chained him up to the tree. A decision that both boys actually came to together and Meilani was shocked they actually agreed on something.
"Hey! We are trying to have an adult conversation over here!" Stiles chastised the almost sophomore.
"Okay, you're like two years older than me and you're not my Alpha, Stilinski," Liam turned his big blue eyes over to Meilani and bounced on his feet as best he could. "Lan, I promise I'm okay. Can I please go?"
Meilani snatched the keys from the top pocket of Stiles red and white flannel before sliding off Roscoe and making her way over to where Liam stood. She offered the boy an apologetic smile for his current predicament. "I'm sorry, Li. It's not that they don't trust you."
"No, no, I don't trust him," Stiles called, making his way over to the duo with Isaac and Scott at his side.
"But after that last full moon . . . "Meilani trailed off, ignoring Stiles' comment as she readied the key so she could release her beta from his chains.
"It was one slip up, Lan. I promise," Liam argued gently, watching as Meilani began to work on the locks that kept his chains together around the tree.
"Slip up? A dozen calls to the Sheriff's Department about a monstrous dog-boy running around naked in the streets of Beacon Hills. That's a slip up to you?" Isaac retorted with a small scoff, crossing his arms across his chest.
Meilani froze in her actions of unlocking the locks on Liam's chains and tilted her head. "I am probably going to regret asking you this, but why were you naked?"
Liam huffed and lightly banged his head back against the tree bark. "It was really hot out that night, okay? Lan, come on! Just let me go."
Meilani blew out a breath and inspected Liam's face for any signs of distress, but he still appeared to be in control of whatever was happening with the moon. "Li, you sure you're okay?"
"I promise."
Meilani shrugged and finished freeing Liam from his chains and dropped them into the beige bag that they belonged it before Stiles snatched it off the ground. She lightly tapped his cheek in motherly sort of way and followed after the boys back towards Roscoe so they could begin to head back towards town so they could get Liam home and get to the high school.
The ride back was silent for the first few minutes with Meilani sat in the front and Scott, Liam and Isaac squished into the back seat. Not that the quiet would ever last long with the very inquisitive Liam Dunbar around and he poked his head into the front seat, annoying Stiles significantly.
"So is it a party?" Liam asked the couple up front, practically begging to find out what it was that the older teens were off to do after they took him home.
"It's not a party."
"Then what's at midnight? Why aren't the girls going?"
"Your bedtime, you little runt," Stiles quipped, pushing Liam's face and shoving him back into the backseat between Isaac and Scott. "And, for your information, the girls are meeting us there. Just stop asking questions. It's a senior thing. You'll find out when you're a senior."
Meilani whacked Stiles on the chest for being rude to Liam and gave Liam her second apologetic smile of the night. "Liam, it's a top secret mission us seniors go on. So you'll understand in two years, I promise."
Isaac frowned as his phone beeped once again with a no signal notification. "Are you guys having problems with your phones, too?"
Before anyone in the car could respond, Roscoe's engine began to sputter and puff as the car jerked slightly from the random break down. Stiles whined and slammed his hand down on the wheel. "Oh . . . what the hell?"
"Are you out of gas?" Liam questioned, trying to glance over Stiles' shoulder at the gas tank meter.
"No, it's electrical. Probably the alternator again."
"Yeah, because the Jeep is dying, Stilinski," Isaac remarked, earning a sharp glare from Isaac at the insult and slouched back in his seat while Meilani and Stiles got out of the Jeep to take a look at it.
Meilani held up the little battery powered lantern that Stiles kept in the Jeep for when stuff like this happened and grimaced at the sight of all the duct tape that covered almost every inch of the inside of the hood. "Babe, seriously? This car is more tape than parts."
Stiles held a stern finger up for Meilani to be quiet while the girl merely giggled in response, sidling up closer to Stiles' side so she could take a closer look with him. "Lani, it's the last night of summer, you know, so I wanted to make sure everyone was there tonight. How can I do that if Roscoe is broken down?"
Meilani placed the lantern on the tiny hook that Stiles built into the hood for these situations and turned to him, wrapping her arms around his side as she peered up at him. She was five inches shorter than him so her chin only was able to rest at the middle of his chest. "We'll make it, Sti. You have your tools, right?"
Stiles beamed and held up his roll of duct tape, earning a roll of the eyes from Meilani in response as she pulled away from him. The lightning and thunder continued around them as the couple each ripped a piece off the tape roll to add more to the never ending piles of tape that rested inside the hood. Shouts from Isaac, Scott and Liam caught their attention and Stiles huffed at them to give them a second.
"Just stay in the car and watch Liam, okay?" Meilani called back to her twin and Isaac, wrapping her piece of tape around the part that Stiles instructed her to.
As if the gods above were trying to get Meilani to listen, a massive lightning bolt struck down on the road a few feet from where Meilani and Stiles were stood. Stiles scrambled backwards and clung onto Meilani's arm for a second out of fright. Definitely not a good omen.
"That was close," Meilani commented, her eyes focused on the now sizzling bit of the road that got struck.
"Very close," Stiles agreed just as Roscoe kicked back to life and the couple stepped back from the Jeep with furrowed eyebrows.
Liam poked his head out of the window, crawling over Scott's lap to give Meilani a desperate and frightened look. "Lan, can we go now please?"
Meilani and Stiles didn't argue with that and they both quickly shut the hood of the car once Meilani took back the lantern. They both hopped back into Roscoe and took off down the road before anything else weird happened while they stuck around. With none of their phones working, no one could contact Kira, Malia or Lydia but, luckily for them, they had found Malia on the side of the road as she helped lift a massive tree out of the middle of the road. The werecoyote had said goodbye to her adoptive father before she ran over to Roscoe and hopped in with Isaac being shoved into the trunk as per Stiles' request. At this point, Isaac didn't even argue, knowing it wouldn't end well.
Malia now sat in the middle seat where Liam used to be with her hands placed comfortably in her lap. Her eyes drifted around the car as she noticed everyone's eyes focused on her and she furrowed her eyebrows in confusion. "What?"
"Did you find out yet?" Meilani asked excitedly, hoping that the girl could move up with them the next morning and they could all graduate together.
"Find out what?" Liam intoned, one earbud in his ear while the other dangled down across his chest.
"They're gonna email me," Malia assured everyone, shifting uncomfortably and Meilani could hear her rapid heartbeat and the anxiety rolling off her in her waves. She was still nervous about finding out if she passed summer school and was able to be a senior.
"Oh, is this about summer school?"
Malia's eyes flashed between her four friends who all avoided her heated gaze. "You told him?!"
"Oh, no, all they said was you had to go to summer school 'cause the principal said your test scores weren't good enough and you might have to repeat junior year."
Stiles' tongue poked into his cheek out of frustration and he shot Meilani a look. "We couldn't just leave him chained to the tree?"
Meilani lamely shrugged while Stiles grumbled to himself, turning back around in his seat to take them towards the hospital so they could drop Liam off where his dad was. With the storm coming, his step-father didn't want Liam being in the house alone so he wanted Liam to sit around in the hospital until he got off his shift.
Cue Meilani's bad feeling tripling by the minute.
"My dad's helping out in surgery. He's not gonna be done for hours," Liam rambled as he followed his alpha through the corridors of the packed hospital, multiple nurses and doctors running back and forth on either side of them to try and keep up. "So I'm either gonna be hanging out here or I could still go with you guys . . . "
Meilani pressed the button for the elevator and turned to face Liam, crossing her arms across her chest. "Show me your hands."
Liam huffed like a small child being called out on doing something wrong. However, with one deadpan expression from Meilani, the boy sighed and brought his small hands from out of his zip up hoodie pockets. He held up his hands to show Meilani the crescent moon dents in his palms that were smeared in his blood. Clearly, he didn't have control. "Okay, so I'm still having trouble."
"No, Li, you're just still learning," Meilani assured him, dropping her hands to her sides and stepping closer to her beta with a small smile. She didn't want him to think he was fully in trouble with her because she did get why he lied about being in control. He wanted Meilani to be proud of him for doing better. Little did he know, she was already proud of him for even trying so hard to learn and keep up in the first place. "What do you do to stay focused on not changing?"
Liam held up the two earbuds that hung out from the collar of his shirt. "But it's not working tonight."
"Hey, it's working enough. You didn't shift yet, right? So you're okay for right now," Meilani said, placing a hand on Liam's shoulder and squeezing it gently. "Derek told me that you're the strongest that he'd ever seen at your age. Now, coming from Derek Hale that means a lot. Maybe means that things are gonna be harder for you for a while but it also means something, doesn't it?"
"That I'm really strong?" Liam guessed and seemed to perk up when Meilani nodded in response. He threw his arms around his alpha who giggled and wrapped her arms around his frame in return. "Thanks, Lan."
"Anything for my favorite beta," Meilani mused, ruffling Liam's hair just as the elevator doors dinged open and the duo pulled apart. "Just, uh . . . don't tell Isaac I said that. He gets jealous."
Liam snorted out a laugh and held up a thumbs up to Meilani. "Anything for my favorite alpha."
Meilani waved to Liam as the doors closed and took the elevator back down to the first floor where the boys waited for her with Malia nowhere in sight.
"Mei, I still can't reach Kira," Scott informed just as Meilani stepped off the elevator and she frowned in response.
"Okay, you reminded her about tonight though, right?" Isaac piped in, following after Scott, Stiles and Meilani down the hall.
"I think so. She only texted me once this week."
Meilani balked and tugged on her brother's wrist as they rounded the corner. "Wait, how did you leave things when Kira left for New York?"
"Well, they were good. Yeah, I just said, you know, don't worry about anything, just go and have fun," Scott responded.
"No. You told her to go have fun?" Stiles gaped, staring at Scott wide eyed. "Scott, that can be interpreted a lot of different ways. Like if I told that Meilani, that just means to enjoy herself and relax. However, for Kira, who wasn't officially your girlfriend . . . it could mean other things."
"Like what?"
"Um, like . . . " Stiles trailed off as they made it to the reception desk that Malia stood at waiting for them to return. "Don't worry, we're not exclusive. Go have fun with other guys. Like . . . Hey, Malia, if you were going away and someone told you to go have fun and don't worry and you weren't official, what would you think they were talking about?"
Malia tilted her head in confusion and Meilani swore it was the most innocent that Malia had ever looked since they'd met. "You mean fun like bowling? Or sex with other guys?"
Scott visibly deflated as he realized that he might have messed up whatever he'd worked on with Kira the past few months before summer started and through their few texts shared since Kira left the state for the other side of the country. "Okay, yeah. Now I'm worried."
Meilani opened her mouth to try and at least calm her brother's nerves but yet another gurney passed by her with an injured male on it that her mom pushed from the back. He was taped up and had a sling over his right arm, his heart rate beating rapidly through the pain that clearly coursed through his body. "Mom, where is all this coming from?"
"A jackknifed tractor-trailer on 115 caused a major pile up," Melissa replied shortly, rushing to keep up with the other two EMTS that walked with her on either side to try and keep the man as comfortable as they could until they could get him to whatever room he needed.
"Okay, there is only way back into Beacon Hills from the airport and it's 115. She's not gonna make it," Stiles sighed, visibly growing upset that his plan for all his friend to be together for this big occasion quickly slipping through the cracks.
"I can get her," Scott mumbled to himself and brushed past Isaac and Malia to get towards the exit of the hospital. He began to walk backwards when he neared the exit doors and pointed a finger in the pack's direction. "You guys head to the school. Lydia's probably already there. We'll meet you by midnight."
Meilani slapped a hand to her side as she watched her brother walk through the exit doors and rush out into the torrential downpour that took over the town. "How does he expect to get to her in that traffic? He realizes that he's the human and I'm the alpha, right?"
"We'll see him at like three AM," Isaac teased.
The rain had become so bad that Meilani was honestly shocked that Stiles didn't crash on the way to the high school. Her bad feeling only kept growing in the pit of her stomach as the storm worsened and she really just wanted to scream and make it go away. Usually she knew to trust her gut instincts since they tended to be right, but she didn't know just what she should be looking out for at the moment.
Meilani followed after Stiles, Malia and Isaac distractedly as she fiddled with her phone in her hand. She itched to text her brother and make sure that he and Kira were okay, but the cell phone towers were still down and she couldn't get in touch with him. Something that didn't sit right with her because she had no idea if Scott even got Kira safely or not. She paused in her steps when her ears perked up to something on the other side of the campus, causing the trio ahead of her to pause themselves.
"Baby, you okay?" Stiles asked, concern filling his tone as he noticed the tense posture that seemed to take over Meilani's stance.
"I don't know," Meilani mumbled and drifted her eyes from where she'd looked in the direction of the noise and back to her friends before her. "I need to check something out, but you guys go on ahead. I'll meet you inside."
Isaac could see the questions swarming in Stiles' eyes and he stepped backward to be closer to Meilani. "I'll go with her and make sure she's okay. We'll meet you in five minutes. Promise."
Stiles looked like he wanted to argue, but with how determined and sure Meilani seemed, he knew he couldn't argue with her. He stepped up to her and pressed his lips gently to hers, the raindrops making their lips extra slippery and Meilani could taste the acidic flavoring from the rain water. Not that she'd ever complain about a kiss from Stiles since they never failed to make her heart flutter in her chest or send a sense of calmness through her entire body. Something that she desperately needed right now.
Playfully rolling his eyes, Isaac grabbed onto Meilani's shoulders and began to turn her away from Stiles and in the direction she'd stared off in just seconds ago. "Alright, there's enough time to do that later, you two. Let's go."
Meilani huffed and whacked Isaac's hands away from her shoulders teasingly before she shot Stiles a reassuring look over her shoulder, rounding the corner of the area they were in and headed towards the other side of the campus. She kept her ears alert for any odd sounds or any sounds that matched up to what she'd heard just moments before. She came across the overpass between the school and the lacrosse field, shielding her and Isaac from the onslaught of rain from above. Her eyes scanned around her for a moment, trying to see if anything stood out until a low growl was heard behind her and Isaac.
Stood behind her was a werewolf, black caked in patches over his skin like dirt and he broke through the curtain of rain water that trickled down from from the overpass. Isaac and Meilani barely had a second to shift before they were both attacked by scarily long claws. Meilani just dodged out of the way of the claws that seemed to glisten in the light given by the field lights across the way. Isaac wasn't so lucky and he got slashed across the chest before he was flung across the overpass, crashing into the wall with a loud groan.
Meilani turned to leap at the massive intruder but he gripped Meilani by the front of her shirt and flung her across the way much like he had Isaac. However, Meilani was sent flying across her stomach along the cement floor and she hissed as a slight burn formed on her skin and her white sweater got dirty from the rain waiter that trickled under neath the overpass from the waterfalls of rain water on either side of the overpass.
"True Alpha? Where's your power, Meilani?" the werewolf taunted, standing above Meilani like he had just won the Olympics.
Meilani growled in anger and was quickly crouched before the intruder with a murderous gaze on her face, hoping it was enough to show the intruder that he wasn't getting off that easily. "Who are you? A devoted fan?"
The werewolf growled down at her and the true alpha didn't even so much as flinch at the sound. "Show me the girl who took down Deucalion and broke the Argents. I came for that Alpha. Come on!"
Meilani let out a thunderous growl just as Isaac finally started getting back to his own feet. She leapt up and slashed her claws at the intruder's chest. She spun around, kicking her foot up and cracking the werewolf underneath his chin. A resounding crack was heard as his neck threw back and Meilani was back in her defensive squat position to prepare for another attack. She pushed up to kick her foot at the intruder's side, but the werewolf caught her leg and then used his other hand to grip her around the throat. He grabbed her and slammed Meilani into the concrete wall and dropping her to the ground unceremoniously.
"Meilani! Isaac!" Kira Yukimura cried, running at the new enemy with her katana raised behind her. She swung her sword at the werewolf and only got two in before he cracked the side of her face and sent her sprawling to the ground.
Meilani had just gotten back to a sitting position when the intruder advanced on her again, his glowing blue claws raised and ready to swipe at her. "I didn't come just to claim your status."
Before the werewolf could so much as move, another figure dropped down from the overpass and let out a roar. Another werewolf? Meilani barely had time to question it as the new werewolf rushed at the wall, kicking off it and slashing his claws at the intruder's face. The new werewolf began to slash at any body part he could get to and was sent down to the ground after a few hits.
Isaac rushed at the intruder once again and was grabbed by the throat much like Meilani had been and flung into the wall a second time. He crashed to the ground just as Meilani found her strength again and pushed up to fight off the intruder. She got another few punches and kicks in to his sides and legs before she was once again lifted into the air by her throat, the intruder's glowing blue claws raised along with her. He jammed his claws just below her chest and Meilani let out a yelp of pain, gripping onto the hand that was fastened around her throat.
Meilani could feel her power and energy draining rapidly and she was lowered down to her knees with the intruder's claws still dug deep into her chest. She gasped and choked around the air that was quickly becoming hard to circulate through her body and her hand began to slightly loosen around the hand around her throat.
"Baby, no!" Stiles cried in horror, skidding to a stop underneath the overpass behind Scott, the new werewolf and Kira with Malia and Liam on either side of him.
Stiles' voice and Liam's loud growl of protection over his down alpha seemed to snap something in Meilani and her strength was shoved back into her like a hammer on a nail. Her grip on the hand around her throat tightened again and she grabbed onto the hand that was dug into her chest. She slowly got herself back to her feet, her red alpha eyes glowing dangerously at the werewolf trying to kill her. She grunted as she suddenly snapped her the intruder's hand that was in her chest and shoved it out of her like it was nothing.
The intruder howled in pain as Meilani ripped out the two claws that had gotten stuck in her chest and she chucked them to the side, now being the one to tower over the intruder. She could a collective breath of relief come from her friends that stood to the side and Stiles mumbled about a dozen prayers to the Lord above for saving his girlfriend from death. Again.
"I don't know who are or what you thought you were going to do, but I'll give you a choice. You can stay and I'll break something else. Or you can run," Meilani offered, glaring down at the intruder.
"I'd run if I were you. My girl doesn't mess around," Stiles suggested, pride feeling his tone as he grinned proudly at his girlfriend for, once again, kicking ass.
The intruder stared around at the pack that surrounded him and growled angrily, running off in the opposite direction with his wrist clutched to his chest.
Meilani slowly shifted back to her normal form just as Stiles rushed over to her and wrapped her up tightly in his arms while the rest of the pack ran closer to make sure Meilani was actually okay. She leant into her boyfriend's side and closed her eyes when Stiles pressed a soft kiss to the side of Meilani's head.
"You don't remember me, do you?" the new werewolf voiced, breaking apart the couple and the pack turned to glance over at the new werewolf. Now that he was back to his human form as well, Meilani could see that he had shiny blue eyes, short brown hair that was matted to his forehead thanks to the rain, and a dazzling smile that she was sure got him out of trouble most of the time. She furrowed her eyebrows in concentration as he looked familiar but she couldn't figure out where she knew him from. "I guess I look a little different from the fourth grade."
Meilani slowly pulled away from Stiles' embrace as her brain finally put the pieces together in her head. It appeared that Scott and Stiles also seemed to come to the same conclusion as they both eyed the boy before them. "Theo? Theo Raeken?"
Malia blinked as the boy smiled toothily at his name and her eyes bounced between the twins and Stiles. "Wait, you know him?"
"They used to," Theo answered for the trio and rocked back on his heels. "Trust me,I never thought I'd see you guys again. Couple of months ago, I heard of an alpha in Beacon Hills. When I found it was little Meilani McCall, just couldn't believe it. Not just an alpha, either, but a True Alpha."
"What do you want?" Meilani questioned, knowing that Theo wasn't just there to help save her from the intruder. Someone always wanted something from her when it came to the supernatural.
"I came back to Beacon Hills. Back home with my family . . . because I want to be apart of your pack."
As if this night couldn't get any weirder.
After leaving behind Theo once he gave Meilani some time to think it all over, the pack made their way towards the school so they could go find Lydia before she started to freak out that they weren't there yet. Meilani's brain raced at max speed as she tried to figure out just what the hell was going on. Here comes Theo years later after being off the grid and out of Beacon Hills just to be in her pack? She knew that many supernatural knew of her and most wanted her higher power, but she didn't know what to make of Theo just yet.
Theo used to be a bouncing boy that always tried to talk to her when they were in school. Scott used to tease her that Theo maybe had a crush on her, but since Theo didn't really talk to many other people, Meilani just thought that he wanted a friend. Then he was suddenly gone from school and wasn't seen again until tonight. She just didn't know if Theo was the same kid from back then or he was after something else.
"Lani, we haven't seen this kid in years. You don't find this highly suspicious?" Stiles asked incredulously as Meilani didn't seem all that phased over the fact that Theo was around again.
"You know, I have more pressing things to worried about, Stiles. Maybe like the guy that just tried to kill me?" Meilani reminded Stiles, gesturing to the three small puncture holes in her white sweater from the werewolf that almost killed her. Her wet hair stuck to her cheek in random spots and she quickly brushed her hand through her soaked curls to brush them back and out of her face.
Malia's footsteps halted suddenly and gained the attention of the pack around her, all of them noticing the phone clutched in her hand and illuminating her face. An excited grin began to take over her features and she bounced on the balls of her feet with a tiny squeal. "I'm in! I passed."
"Oh my God!" Meilani cheered, throwing herself at the werecoyote whose arms instantly wrapped her around in a tight embrace. "I'm so proud of you, Mal! You're officially a senior!"
"Ugh, thank God!" Lydia Martin's voice called from the down hall, the sounds of her heels being heard against the tiled floors as she rushed over to the group. Her eyes barely even noticed the soaked mess that her friends were, more worried over the fact that she almost did tonight alone. "Where have you guys been? The whole senior class is here. Are we doing this or not?"
Stiles smiled and slid his fingers through Meilani's, holding her hand lovingly as a happy grin took over his face. Finally, all his friends were together again. "Yeah, we're definitely doing this."
The pack all shared a small laugh and made their way towards the library with Isaac's arms wrapped around Lydia and Malia's shoulders and the two couples holding hands on either side of the trio. They had queued up in the line forming in the top level of the library and were quickly the next group up to sign their names into the metal shelf with the black sharpie being passed around to the next person in line.
"This isn't vandalism, is it?" Kira asked awkwardly, playing with the black marker that Lydia had just passed to her.
"Not . . . technically," Lydia answered with a small shrug and walked over to where Isaac stood against the barrier that kept the students from falling down to the first floor of the library.
That appeared to calm Kira's nerves as the girl signed KY into the metal shelf and handed off the marker to Malia next who hesitated for a moment. Her hand hovered over where she drew an M and debated whether to put T or H next to her name. She didn't know if she was a Tate or a Hale even though she'd gone by Tate her whole life, only just finding out Peter Hale was her father a few months prior during the dead pool. She eventually smiled and put down a T, officially sealing her last name as Tate and nothing else.
Scott and Stiles signed their names next and Stiles handed off the marker to his girlfriend, pressing a soft kiss to her forehead as he did. She graciously took the marker from him and wrote down MM in between Scott and Stiles' names just the way it should be. She went to draw her hand back when an idea crossed her mind. All of the most important people's names were there except one. One person that didn't get to be there because she had died doing what she did best: protecting and saving her friends.
A small tear escaped out of Meilani's eye as she wrote AA into the shelf right below her, Scott and Stiles' name. Allison Argent may not be there with them physically, but Meilani was determined to let her legacy and name live on for the rest of time. She deserved it for going above and beyond and Meilani handed off the marker to the next person behind her, realizing she'd taken a minute too long. She walked into Stiles' open arms and leant her head on his shoulder as his arms wrapped around her tightly, hugging her close to him.
"She would have been with us," Isaac spoke into the tense silence, his eyes trained on the double letters on the shelf. They almost seemed to stick out like a blinding light against all the other initials scribed into the shelf.
"She still is," Lydia reminded softly.
"And all of us are still together. Till the end," Scott added in, more so for Stiles' sake than anyone else's.
Stiles smiled gently and rested his head on top of Meilani's. "Let's make this our best year, yeah?"
Meilani sighed quietly, enjoying the feeling of Stiles' arms for a moment long. She had a bad feeling that the werewolf that attacked her wouldn't be the end of their bad luck. The scale had tipped and Meilani was pretty sure they weren't going to like the outcome of it.
AUTHORS NOTE
Hi hey hello
FINALLY, WELCOME TO NIGHT CHANGES! I already to put this chapter off a day and then almost had to put it off another when my power went out due to the storm in my area. Let's just say that Meilani is definitely not wrong, none of them are going to like where this bad boy ends up. Theo is here and I am so ready for the angst that'll be coming up! Enjoy the softness that was this chapter for our pack (you know, minus Meilani being attacked of course) because can't promise there'll be many after this for part one. Oof.
