Chapter 19 | The Hybrid
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Never in her life did Mira think she would be walking in the mountains with her ex lover and a ripper vampire for company, but as life went on she seemed to be doing a lot of things she least expected.
Mira had gone back to her emotionless and humorous facade after her break down in Klaus' arms. He didn't try to make her speak about it, not that she would anyway.
"You know, when you said we were going to find the pack you could of told me we were going for a hike up a mountain," Mimi complained for the hundredth time, "these heels are not meant for a walk in the woods."
"Yes, I'm sorry about that love," Klaus sighed, "but we're here now."
Mimi groaned, "I hate walking."
Klaus chose to ignore her, "You okay? Is Ray getting heavy?" He asked Stefan who was carrying the still dead Ray.
"I'm fine," Stefan deadpanned. Mira couldn't help but roll her eyes at him and his moodiness, it was quite annoying to an extent.
"You sure about that? You know, we've been walking for quite some time now. If you need some water or a little sit down," Klaus quipped, enjoying that he was annoying the vampire.
"You know, I get that we're, we're stuck together, but if we could maybe just skip the chitchat, it'd be great," Stefan retorted.
"Do you ever get tired of the brooding?" Mira questioned in genuine curiosity, "I mean seriously it does my head in."
"Maybe it's 'cause I'm a little tired of hunting werewolves," Stefan stated, "We've been at it all summer."
Mimi shrugged in agreement, giving Klaus a look, "He has a point. That's doing my head in as well," she gave him a fake smile, to which he rolled his eyes.
"Thanks to our pal Ray, we found ourselves a pack," Klaus stated as the trio came to a stop. "There," they looked around at the camp that was swarming with wolves chattering.
Stefan stepped forward causing all eyes to turn to him as he dropped Ray onto the ground. A woman was quick to rush over to the unconscious man, "Ray! Oh, my God. What's going on? Who are you?"
"The important question is who am I," Klaus spoke as he and Mimi stood next to Stefan, "Please forgive the intrusion. My name is Klaus."
"You're the hybrid."
Klaus smirked, "You've heard of me. Fantastic."
"Well, I'm Mira," The brunette introduced.
Everyone's eyes widened at the name, a little stunned. They knew who she was, everyone had heard of her somehow. They just couldn't believe they were seeing her in person and with Klaus of all people.
"Pleasures all yours, of course," she smiled.
━━━━━━━
"It's fascinating, actually," Klaus said, "A werewolf who isn't beholden to the moon, a vampire who doesn't burn in the sun. A true hybrid."
Mira huffed, "We get it. Seriously, you can stop now," she smiled as Klaus could only glare at her.
Their attention turned away from each other and towards Ray, who had suddenly gasped awake.
"Excellent timing, Ray," Klaus said.
"Tad bit dramatic," Mimi added.
The new hybrid looked around in confusion, "What's happening to me?" He asked.
"Stefan?"
The vampire stood turning to werewolves around them, "Are any of you human? Your friend here needs human blood to complete his transition to vampire. If he doesn't get it, he will die."
"Doesn't take much, just a sip," Klaus said, "Anyone? A boyfriend, a girlfriend, along for the ride?"
Mira looked at a blonde boy that was standing a few feet from her, "You," she ran towards him and took a bite out of his forearm before she threw him to Stefan.
"No!" A woman who stood beside Mira shouted and Klaus was quick to wrap a hand around her throat - stopping her from interfering.
"If you don't drink it, Ray, I will," Stefan said, "Problem is I don't know how to stop."
"It's the new order, sweetheart," Klaus told the woman he had a hold of, "You join us, or you die."
"I'd rather die than be a vampire," the woman spat.
"Not a smart choice, darling," Mimi smirked as Klaus fed her his blood and snapped her neck.
"She'll thank me for that later," Klaus chuckled. "Okay, who's next?" He grinned.
━━━━━━━
Adelaide walked into the Mystic grill looking for a certain cheerful blonde. She looked around the bar and spotted two familiar faces.
"Tyler. Matt," she greeted, catching their attention. She never really spoke to Matt, only seeing him when she came to the grill and she didn't hide her dislike for him.
Tyler, she was starting to speak to more. The two were acquainted after she helped Caroline deal with his first full moon. Then his werewolf pals kidnapped her and almost killed making her hate him. He then bit her after she had saved him from being used in the ritual. He felt extremely guilty after being the reason she was almost killed twice and since Caroline never let him forget it.
He also knew he was part of the reason Mimi had left so he had been being as nice a possible to her, doing whatever he could to make up for all the things he had put her through.
"Adelaide, what up?" Tyler greeted back, noticing Matt's discomfort around her.
"I'm looking for Caroline. Have you seen her?" She asked. "She's not answering me and she always answers."
Tyler shook his head with a frown, "I haven't seen her since last night."
Addie narrowed her eyes, "you left Elena's party with her. How have you not seen her?"
Tyler's eyes widened, not expecting her to know that. Adelaide had been to Elena's party, mostly for the alcohol that Damon kept in the house. She had seen Tyler and Caroline kiss, she had also killed two people afterwards. Her emotions and feelings were all over the place, without Mimi around things just seemed to get worse and worse.
But she wasn't going to blame Caroline or Tyler, neither of them knew how she felt. They could do what they wanted.
"She was gone when I woke up," he replied lowly.
Adelaide rolled her eyes at him and turned to Matt who was watching them, "what about you? Have you seen her?"
"Not keeping up on her comings and goings anymore," the human answered.
Addie sighed as she pinched the bridge of her nose, "it was just a yes or no question. I don't care what you're keeping up with."
"Why do you think something's wrong? She could be fine," Tyler spoke, stopping Matt from retorting to the clearly annoyed vampire.
"Because I know Caroline and I know for a fact that no matter what - even if she's busy - she always replies to my messages."
"Tonight's a full moon," Matt noted.
Addie gave him a glare, "thanks for the information. Although I'm pretty sure he would already know," she gestured towards Tyler.
Matt decided to ignore her, "She usually helps you?" He asked the wolf.
"Yeah. Whatever."
"Do you, uh," Matt hesitantly spoke, "Is this like the kind of thing that you need another person for?"
"I can handle it. I've got Adelaide if I need her but thanks," Tyler replied.
Adelaide raised a brow, "excuse me. No, no you do not have Adelaide considering the last time Adelaide helped you during a full moon she almost died."
Tyler nodded, realising she was right. It was probably best that she didn't help. He picked up his coffee cup to take a sip but ended up grimacing at the taste. "What is up with my taste buds today?"
Matt chuckled slightly, "It's the vervain. The sheriff has me slip it into the coffee here every now and then."
"That's good to know," Addie mumbled.
Tyler frowned, "That's what vervain tastes like?"
"Yeah. I'm surprised you can taste it, the coffee usually hides the flavour," Matt said, looking between the two supernaturals, "For humans, anyway."
"Was that supposed to be a dig?" Adelaide wondered as she watched the human walk away. Receiving no reply she turned to see Tyler lost in thought, "what's wrong?"
He looked at her with worry in his eyes, "we might have a problem after all."
━━━━━━━
"There," Klaus said as he finished giving the human boy his blood to heal him, "Good as new. Now you relax, okay, mate? We're gonna need you when the rest of them wake up."
"They're dead," Ray cried while looking around the camp, "They're all dead."
"Well, he's through his transition. He should be feeling better soon," Klaus eyed the new hybrid.
"So is this your master plan?" Stefan queried "Build an army of hybrid slaves?"
"No, not slaves. Soldiers, comrades."
"For what war, might I ask?" Stefan asked.
"Oh, you don't arm yourself after war has been declared, Stefan. You build your army so big that no one ever dares pick a fight," Klaus explained. "Mimi, you get it, don't you? From what I hear you seem to have as many enemies as me."
"Well, I prefer to fight my own battles and enemies. Not have others do the job for me," she answered, "it's more fun that way."
Klaus couldn't lie, she was extremely different to the girl he remembered. Although as he got to know this new her, a lot of feelings he had buried deep were resurfacing. He admired her and the power she held, how fearful people looked when they heard her name and how she never backed down from a fight. He admired her.
"What makes you so sure that they'll be loyal?" The vampire snapped him out of his thoughts. Not giving Klaus a chance to reply to Mira.
"Well, it's not difficult to be loyal when you're on the winning team. That's something you'll learn once you shake that horribly depressive chip off your shoulder," Klaus stated.
Mira drowned out the rest of the conversation as she turned to Ray who was shivering violently. She furrowed her eyebrows when she noticed the blood coming out of his eyes. "Hey, Nik, Nik," she called out, earning his attention, "I think we have a slight problem."
He followed her gaze to Ray, sitting beside him when he saw what she was pointing out. He grabbed his face, examining it, "somethings wrong."
"Really? Didn't notice," Mimi quipped only to receive a look of annoyance.
Klaus narrowed his eyes at her, "Now is not the time for snide remarks, Mimi."
Stefan crouched down as he looked at Ray, "That shouldn't be happening, should it?"
"Well, obviously," Klaus snapped back.
Mimi sighed, "I love it when things work out."
━━━━━━━
"You said it was gonna feel better," Ray said, shakily, "Why doesn't it feel better?"
"Some master race," Stefan teased.
Mimi snapped her head towards him, "shut the hell up, Salvatore. Now is not the time."
Stefan closed his mouth, looking away from her glare. Their attention turned to another wolf who gasped awake.
"Derek," Klaus beckoned, "come feed your girlfriend." While Klaus dealt with the human, Ray randomly snarled and sped off.
"Go get him," Klaus ordered Stefan.
Stefan reluctantly ran after Ray, leaving Mira and Klaus to deal with the rest of the wolves.
"This is all going brilliantly," Mimi mumbled.
Klaus raised a brow at her as he the now awoken hybrid fed on the human, "you are not helping."
She threw her hands up, "what would you like me to do?"
Klaus opened and closed his mouth, looking for the right words, "stop with the commentary."
Mimi crossed her arms with a look of offence, "my commentary is very helpful, thank you very much. I personally find it entertaining."
Klaus rolled his eyes, fighting a smile, "it is only entertaining to you."
The brunette huffed, "shut up and deal with your comrades," she mocked.
Klaus just chuckled lightly at her. If it were anyone else he'd probably rip the heads off but with Mimi he enjoyed it. And even if he tried to rip her head off it most likely wouldn't end well for him.
Not long after Klaus went off to try and find Stefan. Mira stayed back, babysitting the hybrids. As they all started waking up Klaus had re-entered the campsite.
Mimi was focused on the hybrid that had been fed human blood. Her eyes were bleeding just as Rays had. "I need you to go help Stefan," Klaus told her as he walked over.
"Why?"
Klaus hadn't taken notice of the woman in front of Mimi crying blood just yet, "Ray bit him. I'm not giving him my blood until he brings Ray back and he could probably use your help."
"Fine," Mira rolled her eyes. "You might want to keep an eye on her though," she pointed down at the woman in front of her, before speeding away to find Stefan and Ray.
━━━━━━━
Adelaide walked into her house, pissed off at everything per usual. Tyler told her that he thinks his mom had something to do with Caroline's random disappearance and that he would call her as soon as he found out anything. She reluctantly decided to trust him but if he didn't call her by tomorrow she was going to be literally turning the town upside down to find her blonde friend.
She walked into the kitchen, frowning when she smelt something cooking. Her eyes widened at the sight in front of her. Matteo had an apron on that said 'chef daddy' on the front of it. He seemed to be mixing something in a bowl. Elliana was sitting at the kitchen counter on a stool watching him in amusement.
"What is happening?" Adelaide questioned, unsure of what to make of everything.
Ellie giggled, "Theo's making cookies."
"Cookies?" Addie asked in even more confusion. Matteo could do some weird crazy shit but never did she think she'd see the day where he'd be baking in the kitchen wearing an apron.
"The cupcakes are in the oven," Matteo added.
"Cupcakes?"
Matteo hummed as he started putting the cookie mixture into balls and setting them on a tray, "trust me, they're going to taste amazing."
Adelaide moved over to sit beside the amused redhead, "Is he okay?"
"It's Matteo. When is he ever okay," Ellie replied.
Said vampire looking away from his uncooked cookies and up at the two, "he can hear you, loud and clear. He is also fine, thanks."
"I'm more concerned about whether you actually know what you're doing or if our house will soon be on fire," Addie stated.
Matteo narrowed his eyes, "I know what I'm doing. I watched a video."
Ellie and Addie shared a look, "oh god," they both groaned in unison.
"You let him do this?" Adelaide accused Ellie.
The Voland girl held her hands up in mock defence, "he was doing it by the time I came out of my room."
"Adelaide, I know your tense and moody but believe me darling when you have a nice warm cookie with a fresh glass of milk your day will be a lot better," Matteo told her, being completely serious.
Adelaide could help but shake her head with a growing smile as she stood up from her seat, "you are completely insane."
Matteo frowned, "that doesn't interest you? Alright, maybe a cupcake and a glass of blood will," he offered but she ignored him and walked out.
"I will never trust your cooking Matteo," she called out as she walked up the stairs.
Matteo huffed like a child, "well, you're just missing out because my cooking is bloody brilliant."
Ellie sipped her glass, "I beg to differ."
He glared at her, "you haven't even tried it."
She shrugged, "I don't have to. I just know."
"I'm living with a bunch of imbeciles," he murmured to himself as he shook his head in annoyance.
━━━━━━
Mimi was getting bored after a while of searching for Stefan. She was about to head back to the campsite when she heard the sound of struggling. She had an internal battle with herself on whether she should check it out or not.
With great reluctance and an audible groan of annoyance she ran towards the noises. The last she expected to see was a feral Ray close to taking a bite from Damon Salvatore.
She came up from behind the sired hybrid and stuck her hand into his chest - clutching his heart tightly, "someone forgot to get their shots," she mused before pulling the organ out of his body.
As he fell to the ground Mira's eyes connected with Damon's who only stared at her in surprise.
"Mira," he panted out.
She tilted her head at him, "it seems no matter what happens I always end up saving you somehow. Always a damsel in distress, huh Day."
"My hero," he retorted sarcastically.
"What the hell are you doing on a mountain full of werewolves with the full moon out?" She wondered although she knew the answer.
"Trying to get my brother home," he couldn't tell her about Elena being alive. Mira didn't know and if she found out she'd probably tell Klaus and he couldn't take that chance. They were lucky that she hadn't actually spoken to Adelaide the entire summer because the blonde would definitely inform her.
Mimi clicked her tongue, "didn't he pay you a visit just a few days ago? Haven't you noticed he's not his usual hero-like self?"
"We have your lover to thank for that," he snarled, spitefully.
Mimi rolled her eyes, "ex lover," she emphasised, "and Stefan is paying a debt by sticking by Klaus, as am I."
"You should really call Adelaide or even your brother," he suggested, "they're causing a lot of havoc in Mystic Falls. They're like a bunch of moping kids without their mom since you've left."
Mimi chuckled fondly as she thought of them, "I wouldn't piss them off if I were you."
Damon sighed, thinking about the trouble the three - Addie, Ellie and Matteo - have caused. Going as far as threatening to kill Elena or Bonnie. If Caroline wasn't close with them they probably would have destroyed Mystic Falls and everyone in the town with no hesitation. "It's a bit too late for that warning."
Mira huffed when she felt her phone ping in her pocket, knowing it was Klaus wondering where she was, "You need to go, now."
Damon opened his mouth to protest but the voice of his brother stopped him, "she's right."
"Fancy seeing you here," Damon remarked.
"Go Damon, now," Mimi demanded. With great reluctance as he looked between his brother and former best friend, Damon sped away.
Mira turned to Stefan, "you don't look so good. The werewolf bite starting to affect?"
Stefan nodded, "it's painful."
The female hybrid sighed, "come on. Grab him and let's go find Klaus."
Stefan didn't say anything as he picked up a dead Ray and they both set off to find the campsite.
━━━━━━
Mira and Stefan returned to the camp to see the rest of the pack lying on the ground dead. Stefan dropped Ray onto the ground while Mimi stared at an upset set Klaus
The male hybrid sat there looking solemn, "They went rabid. Some of them I killed. The others just bled out. In the end," he stood walking over to the duo, "They're all dead." He angrily screamed and smashed a bottle of beer. "I did everything I was told!" He shouted, "I should be able to turn them. I broke the curse. I killed a werewolf. I killed a vampire. I killed the doppelgänger."
"We'll figure something out," Mimi reassured, not sure how to comfort him. Neither of the hybrids noticed the uncomfortable looking Stefan as they were too occupied staring at one another.
"You look like hell," Klaus said to Stefan.
"Last I checked, I'm dying," Stefan humourlessly chuckled, showing the bite on his arm, "and you don't want to heal me."
Klaus' gaze fell down onto Ray's dead body, "I had to kill him," Mimi spoke.
Klaus looked back up to her, meeting her eyes once again, "did he try to harm you?"
Mimi knew she couldn't tell him the truth about Damon so she went with it, "he tried to attack me but I didn't give him the chance. I'm sorry, Nik."
Klaus shook his head, "you come before them, Mimi. It's not your fault." Klaus looked around the campsite once more, "It should have worked." He turned around and picked up an empty beer bottle. He bit into his hand and let his blood fall into the bottle before holding it out to Stefan. "Bottoms up. We're leaving."
Stefan stepped forward with a confused look as he took the bottle.
"It appears you're the only comrade I have left," he said to Stefan before walking off with Mimi behind him.
She hesitantly grabbed his hand, "I'm here, Nik," she whispered.
He looked down at their now intertwined hands before looking back to her with a small smile, "you're here," he mumbled to himself, squeezing her hand a little.
They both walked out of the mountains, hands interlocked the entire time.
Are we ready for a Mimi and Bekah reunion?
