xii. you can't leave me
Chapter 12 | Goodbye Miralette
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Flashback; 1001
Running, it was all she could do.
After she had been on the ground, bawling her eyes out for what felt like hours. Eventually the tears ran out and she was able to calm down. The next she knew — her legs were moving and her hair blew behind her as she ran as fast as she could past the trees.
Mimi never thought she would lose Nik, especially not in the way she just had. But as one would say all good things must come to an end.
It all felt like one big nightmare, like a nightmare she wanted to scream herself awake from. Although unbeknownst to her, this entire day and night was one Mira would always remember and it wasn't over yet.
It was completely dark out, Mimi had been lucky she hadn't tripped considering she could barely see. She also had no idea where she was or where she was going. That wasn't stopping her though.
Everything was too much. Call her dramatic, but the person she loved more than anyone had just left her in the cruelest way. The person who truly understood her better than anyone, had stood in front of her and stoically told her he didn't love her. As if she meant nothing to him.
Klaus was the only one to know the extent of her mothers mental abuse — in some twisted way it connected them even more considering he had received the same treatment from his so-called father his whole life — except Mikael was even worse.
They helped each other with their wounds of feeling unwanted, they made each other feel as if they were truly needed in the world.
Mimi knew her brother needed her, but there would eventually be a time where he would go off on his own as would everyone else. The same went for Klaus' siblings.
But Nik and Mimi would always need each other, even if they were separated.
Mira's breath fell short, causing her to stop to try and calm her pounding heart. Panting out, she looked around, there wasn't a thing in sight. Dried tear stains coated her cheeks, her hair had fallen out, leaving it disheveled and her baby pink dress was now covered in dirt.
She hissed as she felt pain on her leg. Lifting her dress high enough to see crimson red blood dripping down her skin. When she fell to her knees earlier she had fallen on a rock but hadn't paid attention to until now.
Running her hand through her messy hair in a stressed manner. She looked around the dark scenery before looking up at the moon, only half a moon. That meant the wolves wouldn't be roaming around. The last full moon was only a few weeks prior — the day Henrik died.
In the midst of her falling apart she managed to get herself lost in the woods at night, alone. That was a disaster waiting to happen. Elijah always warned her about wandering the woods alone and now she was kind of wishing she had listened.
But then again she usually ventured around during the day never at night so she had a right to be slightly scared. She clearly wasn't in the right mindset and didn't think it through.
She heard noises coming from behind her. That wasn't good at all. Her heart fell to her stomach when the sound of someone walking closer came from behind her, echoing throughout the area.
"Miralette?" She heard someone speak. Recognising the voice she turned slowly.
"Mikael." She breathed, eyeing the sword that was clutched in his hand.
"What are you doing out here alone, child? You never know what or who might be roaming around. This is not very smart of you, Miralette," Mikael scolded.
Mimi held back an eye roll. She always felt uneasy around him, never trusting him. She would rather be alone with the wolves than him right now.
"I lost track of time and got lost in the dark," she spoke quietly, her voice scratchy from the screaming and crying she had done earlier.
Mikael looked down at her hands, noticing that they were shaking. The girl was clearly distraught, he knew something had happened between Niklaus and the girl when the boy came back clearly upset and completely ignored everyone. But what really caught his sight was the crimson red coating her left hand.
"Is that blood?" He inquired.
"I tripped and hurt my leg. Nothing serious," Mimi dismissed, still in a quiet tone. "Can you lead me out of here? I'd really like to go home."
Mikael sighed. He knew what the plan was and it would only be a few minutes before his wife and Mimi's mother found them. His knuckles were white from how tightly he was holding his sword, while he slowly stepped closer.
Mimi narrowed her eyes at his silence — not liking it one bit. She also saw the vicious expression on his face and how he was drawing closer.
"What's going on?" She asked, shakily.
"I truly saw you as a daughter, Miralette. I hate that it has come to this," he spoke sincerely but Mimi was buying it.
"What are you doing out here, Mikael?" She asked grimly.
"He's with us," a voice spoke out from behind her.
Mimi quickly spun around to come face to face with Esther and Evelyn. The young girl's eyes widening, "Mom, what on Earth are you all up to?"
"We're here to right a wrong, sweetheart," Evelyn smiled sweetly, making Mimi's stomach churn.
"What wrong exactly?"
"You are that wrong," the blonde woman feigned sadness as she stared directly into the younger witch's eyes. "You were never meant to exist, Miralette."
Mimi raised an unimpressed brow, "well doesn't that make so much sense." She turned, pointing to her mother, "you're standing next to the woman who gave birth to me."
"The power running through your blood is something no one should have, Mimi," Evelyn explained. "You have chaos magic, something no one in this world has had for many years. It started with your great great grandmother and she lost her life because of it. Now you have to lose yours."
Mimi was confused by everything, "have you three gone completely mad? My magic is exactly the same as yours mother."
Evelyn shook her head, "No, Mira, my magic is supposed to maintain the balance of nature whereas yours is meant to do the complete opposite." Evelyn stood directly in front of her daughter who tried her hardest to not cower away from her. "Sweetie, your magic is destined to destroy the world."
"Your power is not pure, Mira. If you were ever to fully embrace your abilities there is a chance you would be able to alter reality in unstable ways. No one who can do that should ever be on this Earth. Ancestors are constantly in our ears whispering about you. You are the talk of the witch world." Esther spoke as if the whole thing amused her.
"You are both insane, maybe those voices got to you," Mimi threw her hands up in exasperation. "I can only do the same things as Kol can, no altering reality. I'm just a regular witch."
"But you aren't," Esther chuckled. "Your powers aren't even normal. When we do spells nothing comes from our hands but yours a purple, like a sort of mist. As if you're manifesting energy itself. Even your eyes are supposed to change color."
Mimi scoffed, "there has never been any sort of energy let alone purple mist coming from my hands and my eyes have never changed color."
"Because you've never embraced it, sweetheart," Evelyn rolled her eyes. "But the moment you do there's a high chance you won't be able to contain it. That would mean the end of every single witch line and maybe even the world."
"So that means you have to be put down," Mikael smiled maliciously.
Fear crept up on Mira, she couldn't wrap her head around everything she had just been told. Although the only thing on her mind was making it out of this alive. She went to raise her hands to throw them all back so she could make a run for it, but nothing happened.
She threw Esther back into a tree but before she had the chance to do the same with her mother, Evelyn had already put some sort of spell causing Mimi to be unable to move. The mother stood in front of the daughter.
They had this planned out. From getting into Niklaus' head so he would break up with her, to sending Mimi over the edge of almost breaking and Corning her when she was at her weakest.
"Why are you all doing this to me?" Mimi whimpered, betraying shining in her tear filled eyes.
"Because my sweet girl..." Evelyn moved hair out of her daughter's face and Mimi wanted to flinch from the cruel woman's touch. "...it should have been me. You are not strong enough for this kind of power, you don't deserve it. The only thing I can do to stop such magic from seeing the light of day is to simply kill you."
Mira wanted to spit in her face, "So what? You're jealous?" Mimi felt the stinging sensation in the right side of her cheek very quickly. Evelyn had slapped her and she had no remorse when the hurt flashed across the younger girl's face.
"You're going to get what you deserve. The only reason you have this power is because of me, because of my bloodline."
"Well, I didn't ask for it. If I could ask for anything it would have been a better mom, bitch," Mimi snarled.
Evelyn smirked, "you may be a daddy's girl, but you are definitely my daughter."
"Rot in hell," Mira spat.
"I'll see you there, baby girl." Evelyn stroked the young girl's cheek before stepping back.
"Do it, now." Esther demanded, finally recovering from the blow she had taken.
"You won't get away with this. You think your children will be okay with this?" Mimi queried wearily.
"From what I know, Niklaus doesn't love you anymore," Esther stated smugly. Sending a nod to her husband who stood behind the frozen girl. "Thanks for making my son happy for sometime though. Goodbye Mira."
Mikael walked in front of her, staring the girl in the eye, "I'm sorry, Miralette, truly."
"Screw you," Mimi spat, glaring at him with a look that could kill.
Mimi suddenly felt the pain rise through her stomach as Mikael shoved the sword through it. A scream escaped her mouth when he pulled the blade out. Everything then fell into slow motion. This scream was much different to the one she let out earlier. It was louder and something more terrifying. It was clear she wasn't just letting out frustrations, it was her letting out into the world the physical pain she felt in that moment. The pain she had felt her entire life.
The people around her winced at the high pitched cry. Eyes widening when a force of purple energy emerged from her hands. It blew everything away from her including the three adults. Mimi looked down with a very blurry vision seeing the crimson red coating the middle of her dress. A whimper fell from her lips as she fell back awaiting to hit the hard ground.
But instead fell into someone's arms. She looked up to see the one person she truly needed in the moment. Niklaus had once again heard her scream along with his siblings, he could very much hear the difference compared to the earlier one she let out and he rushed to find her immediately. His siblings quickly followed after him.
The sight before him felt as if someone had just tore him apart, right then and there. Catching her in his arms as if on instinct when he saw her falling.
"Mimi, no no no," tears already fell from his eyes as it set in that he couldn't save her — he didn't know how to.
The Mikaelson siblings had to look away at not only the sight of the blood but seeing the girl who was practically a sister to them drifting away. Klaus was too concerned and scared for it to be affecting him in that moment.
"Nik," Mimi smiled softly. Taking a hold of his hand that was trying to stop the blood that she was losing. "You're here."
Niklaus let out a sob, "of course I'm here, Mims. You can't leave me, not now, not like this. I'm sorry, I'm so sorry."
His siblings had immediately noticed the adults who were only just sitting up after being blown away. Rebekah was the first to see the bloody sword next to Mikael, she knew he had to of done this.
Mimi coughed, blood now coating the corners of her mouth "it's okay, Nik. I'm okay. Nothing hurts anymore."
"No, Mimi. No, it's not okay. Please don't, don't leave me. I was supposed to take everything back, to fix everything," Nik choked on his words fighting the agony he felt on his chest.
"I need to know that you'll live, Nik. That you'll move on. Forget about me." Miralette's voice grew quieter and more strangled by the minute.
Nik shook his head, "I could never forget about you, love. You are by far the best thing that has and will ever happen to me."
Mimi reached up to stroke his cheek, "I, I love-"
Nik cut her off seeing how much she was struggling, "shh, I know, me too." He couldn't hear her say the words and he couldn't say them back because that made it feel like a true ending.
"Tell my dad and Matteo that I love them."
He looked at her loving through his blurry vision, "I will, I promise."
"I can't fight it anymore," she mumbled as a single tear fell down her cheek. She was scared, not of death but of leaving him — her family.
"You can let go." his smiled through his pain.
She could feel herself slipping away, she knew she had to say her fair well. "Goodbye Nik," were the last words of a human Miralette.
Trying to contain the sobs as he listened to her heart beat become slower and slower while her strained breaths fell short. Nik's tears were soaking the already blood stain dress as he listened to her last words. He bent down, cupping her delicate angelic face in his hands, leaving a soft kiss on her forehead before leaning his own there and whispering quietly,
"Rest now, my angel."
That was the last thing Mimi heard before her eyes shut completely, and everything went quiet.
Miralette Emeberson was gone, now just a memory the Mikaelson siblings would all cherish for the rest of their long existences. Every kiss, all the laughs, the hugs, the jokes, the conversations, her kindness and the way she made them all happier than ever.
Niklaus Mikaelson felt as if his own soul left his body along with the person he was meant to spend the rest of his life with. She was gone for good leaving him filled with sadness and regret.
They always said 'til death do us part' now they had both died, it truly turned out to be the thing to seperate them. Although it wasn't in the way that they ever thought.
Matteo Emberson came running to the scene. He had been searching the woods since he heard the horrifyingly loud scream from the one person that meant everything to him.
He quickly saw the now dead Miralette peacefully laying in a sobbing Klaus' arms. All the Mikaelson siblings were bawling as well. Matteo was quick to fall onto his knees letting out cry's of anguish, only hurting everyone even more.
They all felt a piece of themselves die with her.
For now, Mimi was gone leaving behind her now shattered family and three guilty suspects.
I know I said the reunion was the next chapter and I meant that but this flashback was longer than I expected so I had to separate them into two chapters.
There will be another flashback later on about what happened afterwards because of course Mimi's wakes up. She not totally dead.
The next part is what you've all been waiting for, which will be up soon...
