The Pogues had settled in on the dock outside of the Carrera house. Both of Kiara's parents off at work and her sister appearing to be absent for the day, they decided it would be a perfect time to test out the drone they had stolen; "borrowed" as Pope would like to put it to make himself feel better about the reality of what they'd done.
The drone was underwater, among John B and Kiara who were swimming to test its camera. JJ and Pope were up on the dock watching the footage streaming on the screen. Holding a thumbs up, John B smiled at the lens before swimming up to the surface, Kiara following him.
The two vaguely overheard the argument that Pope and JJ were having as they arose from under the water.
"Technically, it's not a drone, it's an ROV-"
"Shut up, shut up," JJ cut the boy off. "It's too early for that man."
"Hey, once we get the footage of the wreck, we'll bring it to a lawyer in town and file a formal claim," John B said after shaking his wet hair out like a dog.
"It's such bullshit," JJ rolled his eyes. "Why do we have to do that?"
"Well there is a maritime salvage law," Pope told the blonde from where he stood near the drone screen. "You can't just go to the ocean floor and scoop a bunch of stuff up and-"
"I know I know," JJ cut the boy off once again. "It's just lawyers ain't cheap, bro."
"As soon as they see a footage they'll call for a comp," John B added.
"How do you know all of that?" Kie questioned the boy, still floating in the water.
"Cause my dad said it, like, a million times."
"Yeah that's fair," Kiara sighed as she climbed out of the water and back onto the dock to join the boys.
"This tether is like really long," Pope began. "in the wrong weather, this thing could be pushed around."
"Then we'll go at dead calm," John B said.
"Slack ti-"
"Hey, what's that?" Riley's voice suddenly called from behind the bunch. They all turned immediately, eyes wide and shifting their bodies awkwardly to try and block the view of the equipment. Kiara let a loud groan escape from her lips.
"Uh nothing," Pope sputtered out, "it's nothing." He and JJ each took a step back towards the screen and where the tether was tied to the dock.
"Hmm," Riley hummed, furrowing her brows. "Is that an ROV?"
"My god," Pope exclaimed raising his hands in the air. "At least someone knows and appreciates the technical term of the equip-"
The boy was cut off by being smacked in the back of the head at the hands of JJ, standing next to him. "Shut up, Pope," he muttered behind gritted teeth
"What are you guys doing with-" Riley began.
"What are you even doing out here?" Kiara snapped.
Riley scoffed. "I just finished a shift at the Wreck. Dad said you were supposed to be there an hour ago..."
"Shit," Kiara muttered. She looked back to her friends. With John B out of the water and back up on the dock, all three boys just stood there staring dumbly at the twins. "Guys I gotta go."
"That's fine, Kie," John B said. "We'll wrap it up here and uh..." he glanced at Riley for a second, remembering he couldn't say anything that reveal their current mission, "we'll see you later."
"Right," Kiara said awkwardly, rolling her eyes as she turned away from them. They could never just play cool, like ever.
The girl brushed past her sister and offered her a distasteful glare. Riley stood still as she watched Kiara get into the car and hurriedly pull out of the driveway. She then turned her attention back to the three boys who were pulling the ROV out of the water and packing up its screen in a case.
Riley couldn't remember the last time she had ever been alone with the Pogues without Kiara. She actually couldn't even remember if there had ever been such a time. Every instinct of hers was telling her to ignore them and to walk back to the house but she couldn't help to be a little nosy. Especially after having worked such a long and boring shift and all of her friends seemingly off the grid at the moment, not answering her phone calls.
"So," Riley began. Just the simple word made all the boys snap their heads towards her, not having realized that she was still there and in shock that she was actually talking to them. "Why do y'all really have an ROV?"
"Just playing around," John B muttered, quickly trying to wrap the equipments feet upon feet of tether into the case so they could avoid any further questioning.
"Just playing around with probably over 1,000 dollars worth of equipment?" Riley scoffed. "Where'd you even get it?"
"Not important," JJ hurriedly spit out, finally making eye contact with the girl for the first time since she had appeared.
"Why does it sound so suspicious when you say it like that?" Riley asked, letting the corners of her lips turn upward just the slightest amount.
"Maybe because you're a Kook and you can't help but think the worst of us," JJ deadpanned, offering the girl a sarcastic smile and a wink.
"Right," Riley laughed. "But maybe that's because you're Pogue and like... hold guns to people's heads."
"Alright." JJ scoffed, standing up and ripping his hat off his head in one fast motion. "You're boy Topper almost drowned my boy John B over here," JJ said motioning to his best friend behind him who stood, alongside Pope, staring at the bickering teens cluelessly. "So I'd say we're pretty even."
"Whatever helps you sleep at night," Riley said in a mockingly sweet tone, scrunching her nose. Leaving the boys dumbfounded she promptly turned on her heel and headed back toward the house.
JJ stood astonished that he had just gotten into an argument with Riley, Riley Carrera of all people, and had let her have the last word. John B approached him from behind and swung an arm around his shoulders.
"I'd say she was flirting with you," he said. JJ let out a laugh. John B turned them towards Pope who had just closed the cases with the ROV. "What do you say, Pope? She was definitely flirting, right?"
"Whatever helps you sleep at night," Pope sighed, rolling his eyes at his friend's stupidity.
