LXXIX. Beneath the Sun

"And here is my nest," Kaijira said, her deep voice rumbling like distant thunder as she led Zara to the crater she had carved into the earth. The young leopard cub padded cautiously behind her, her small paws sinking slightly into the soft, warm sand. Zara sniffed at the edges of the crater, her nose twitching as she took in the faint, smoky scent that still lingered in the air.

"Did you make this?" Zara asked, her voice tinged with awe as she peered up at Kaijira.

Kaijira huffed, a small puff of smoke escaping her nostrils. "Yes," she replied simply, her tone matter-of-fact.

Zara's golden eyes widened, her curiosity piqued. "How?" she pressed, her tail flicking excitedly.

Kaijira sighed, her massive shoulders rising and falling in a gesture that was almost human. "I'll tell you another time," she said, her voice carrying a note of finality. She nudged the cub gently with her snout. "For now, find some moss and get comfortable. I'll bring back fresh kill soon."

Zara hesitated, her gaze lingering on the crater for a moment longer before she nodded. "Okay," she said softly, her voice tinged with both gratitude and wonder. She turned and began to explore the area, sniffing out patches of soft moss to line the nest.

Kaijira watched her for a moment, her glowing eyes softening as she observed the cub's small, determined movements. Then, with a low rumble, she turned and lumbered off, her talons sinking into the earth as she made her way across the island. The ground trembled faintly beneath her weight, and the trees swayed as she passed, their leaves rustling in her wake.

The island was alive with the sounds of nature—the chirping of birds, the rustle of small creatures in the underbrush, and the distant crash of waves against the shore. Kaijira moved with purpose, her sharp eyes scanning the terrain for signs of prey. She was a hunter, a force of nature, and yet, for the first time in a long while, her thoughts were not consumed by anger or sorrow. Instead, they lingered on the small, fragile life she had taken under her protection.

As she disappeared into the dense foliage, Zara settled into the nest, curling up on the soft bed of moss she had gathered. She watched the spot where Kaijira had vanished, her heart swelling with a strange mix of safety and curiosity. The island, once a place of solitude for the titan, now felt a little less lonely.

And somewhere in the distance, Kaijira's low rumble echoed through the trees, a promise of return.

SCENEBREAK

Kaijira returned to the nest as the first light of dawn painted the sky in hues of amber and gold, the sun's rays stretching across the island like fingers reaching to wake the world. In her talons, she carried the fruits of her hunt—a stag, its body still warm, and a small mole, its fur matted with dirt. She moved quietly, her massive form surprisingly gentle as she approached the crater where Zara lay curled in a ball of soft, golden fur.

The cub was still asleep, her sides rising and falling with each peaceful breath. Kaijira's lips curled into the faintest hint of a smile, a rare expression for the titan. She carefully laid the stag and the mole near Zara's head, the scent of fresh meat soon rousing the cub from her slumber.

Zara stirred, her ears twitching as her nose caught the aroma. She blinked her eyes open, still heavy with sleep, and yawned widely, revealing tiny, sharp teeth. "Hrmm, food already?" she murmured, her voice thick with drowsiness.

Kaijira nodded, her glowing eyes warm with a quiet satisfaction. "Eat," she rumbled softly, her voice a low, comforting hum. "You need your strength."

As Zara stretched and began to nibble at the mole, Kaijira turned and made her way toward the sea. The waves lapped at the shore, their rhythm steady and calming. She dipped her massive head down, her jaws parting slightly as the cool water washed over her scales. For a moment, she waited, still as a statue, until a sleek, silver swordfish darted into the shadow of her open mouth. With a swift snap of her jaws, she caught it, the fish's struggle ending almost instantly.

Kaijira carried the swordfish back to the nest, her movements slow and deliberate. She settled down beside Zara, her massive body casting a protective shadow over the cub. Together, they ate in companionable silence, the only sounds the gentle crunch of bones and the distant cries of seabirds.

Zara glanced up at Kaijira between bites, her golden eyes filled with a mix of curiosity and gratitude. "Thank you," she said quietly, her voice barely above a whisper.

Kaijira paused, her gaze softening as she looked down at the cub. "You're welcome," she replied, her tone gentle. For the first time in what felt like an eternity, she felt a sense of purpose—not as a destroyer, but as a protector. The island, once a place of solitude, now felt like a sanctuary, a place where two lost souls had found each other.

As the sun climbed higher in the sky, bathing the island in its warm light, Kaijira and Zara finished their meal. The titan leaned back, her dorsal plates pulsing faintly as she watched the cub groom herself, her tiny tongue darting out to clean her paws. The world outside this island was still vast and uncertain, but here, in this moment, there was peace.

And for now, that was enough.
