Wanted Man-Angel-Thing [Pt. 2]
I twisted around in the leather backseat of the Impala, trying to find a comfortable position. Jack, who I now knew to be a nephilim, sat opposite me behind Dean while I sat behind Sam.
He sent me a small smile which I sent back. The atmosphere was less tense around him now that it had been explained to me that he hadn't intended any harm to come to Kaia or myself, that he'd only been wanting help to rescue Dean and Sam's mother.
However, that still left us with Kaia missing and to be honest, I was worried sick about her. I tuned back into the conversation in the car then.
"We find her, no matter what it takes," Dean was saying to Sam.
Sam agreed with him and Dean paused for a moment, his green eyes locked on the two of us in the backseat.
"Kids, you okay?" he asked gruffly, trying to cover up the slight tone of concern lacing his voice.
Being called a "kid" was a tad bit insulting but I let it slide, circumstances being what they were.
"You thought... You both thought that I could do that, that I could kill Derek..." Jack said quietly from beside me.
Wow. So this was going to be one awkward car ride. Sam and Dean shared a knowing look, a sense of guilt hidden there.
Sam spoke first, "Jack, we, um... We didn't know what happened. We figured, m-maybe it was an accident or– or..."
"Like the security guard," Jack interjected.
"Yes. Exactly. Like that. Jack, we were worried, okay? You know, when you disappeared, you were in a dark place. And we didn't know where you were going and..."
Dean cut to the chase, "-thought you were looking for your dad,"
Jack paused for a beat, dumbfounded, "You mean Lucifer?"
My dark eyes went wide as saucers, eyebrows hitting my ebony hairline, "I'm sorry. Your dad is who now?!"
Jack looked over at me, surprised at my reaction. He opened his mouth to speak but whatever he was about to say was of no consequence to me as I attempted to unbuckle my seat-belt with one hand while my other was already on the handle of the car door.
"No, no, no, no, no. This is messed up. I'm just gonna find Kaia on my own-" I began but Dean cut me off.
"You sit your behind back down, do you hear me?!" he roared in such a "dad voice", I nearly laughed despite the dire situation, "Because if you jump out of this moving car, so help me, I will leave you here. And good luck finding Kaia on foot with no supernatural backup."
That shut me up immediately as I bit my lip and eyed Jack. From up front, Sam looked to have been triggered by "so help me, I will leave you here" as if he was having some sort of flashback but said nothing. Silence reigned supreme in the Impala until the nephilim broke it.
"Look, Lucifer may be my dad. But he's no one to me. Sam, Dean, Castiel - they're my family," Jack told me, his expression earnest and his voice sincere.
"Yes, we are." Dean agreed with him from the front seat.
Suddenly, Jack groaned in pain, clutching at his head and Dean swerved to pull the car over to the curb.
"Jack?" Sam asked in concern.
He sighed in response, massaging his temple as it passed, "That...it was angel radio. They've got Kaia."
Dean clenched his jaw as we got back on the road and I could feel my chest constrict with anxiety for my cousin. We were all each other had, more of a sister to me than a cousin. I couldn't lose her.
Jack's hand grabbed mine in the darkness at that moment, squeezing it gently. I glanced up, meeting his concern-filled blue-eyed gaze.
"We'll find her. I promise." he told me seriously.
Despite everything, I shot him a shaky smile, "Thanks, blondie bear."
He frowned in confusion and I chuckled at his naivety.
"Remind me to binge Buffy with you when this is all over."
Luckily for us, Sam and Dean were skilled hunters and finding Kaia was easier than anticipated. Apparently, the angels that had taken her were holed up in a warehouse not far from where we were. After taking the angel guy who was standing guard hostage, we walked gingerly into the warehouse. I felt a weight lift off my shoulders as Kaia's voice drifted closer and closer.
"I mean, you picked the wrong bait. I'm not the kind of girl folks come for. In this world, I don't even rank a milk carton. No one is gonna come for me. I'm not white, rich, blonde. No one's gonna fight for me. I don't matter," she was trying to get her point across to the angel woman.
The woman shrugged, "Of course you don't matter. But they think you do. They'll show. And when they do, we'll kill them and take the boy,"
"That so?" Dean countered as we strode inside, his knife pressed against the angel dude's throat.
Kaia turned slightly in her seat, ropes still binding her to the chair. A smile lit up her face when she saw me and she called out my name.
Sam glared at the woman, "Give us the girl,"
"She's not what we want," the woman waved him off before turning to the nephilim at my side, "Jack, I don't wanna hurt you. I wanna help you. You should be among your own kind,"
"My kind?" Jack scoffed, "The kind that kills people? That kidnaps people?"
"You don't belong with them. Come with us. Come home,"
He took one look at Sam and Dean and then shook his head at the woman, "I am home."
Everything hit the fan in that moment as chaos erupted around us on all sides. Dean was being attacked by the angel he'd held at knife-point while the woman came after Jack. But she was clearly no match for him as, with glowing yellow eyes, he levitated her and her feet left the ground. My mouth formed an 'O' as I watched him send her sailing out the far window, glass shattering in the silence. Meanwhile, together, Sam and Dean had nearly taken out the other angel when he turned around, about to stab Dean. I was just about to call out when Jack, using his powers, bent his will and made him kill himself instead.
Dean ran out of the building then to find the angel woman as Sam, Jack, and I went to check on my cousin.
"Are you okay?" I asked her in concern as Sam worked to cut her restraints.
She shook her head, "No! What was that?!"
"They were angels," Jack supplied, "Bad angels,"
Kaia frowned, "Angels?"
"Yes, and we're hunters," Sam explained to her patiently, "We kill things like them,"
Kaia was clearly freaked out right now, in full panic-mode as she turned wide eyes onto Jack, "Right. And he's the Son of Satan?"
Sam shrugged in response, clearly at a loss as to how to lessen the blow here.
"I am. Yes," Jack admitted.
"But I call him blondie bear," I supplied helpfully.
Kaia shot me a warning look, "You're insane. You're all insane,"
"Yeah, the whole world's insane. You get used to it, " Dean shrugged as he walked back inside before turning to his brother, "She took off. She might be back, she might not."
We all exited the warehouse then, my hand brushing Jack's as we walked. The slight touch made a tingle run up my arm but it was a pleasant sensation. I couldn't help but think that things were looking up.
At least...it's what I thought at the time. But after Kaia reluctantly agreed to dreamwalk for Jack, Sam, and Dean in an attempt to rescue their mom, things...didn't go quite to plan. In fact, it all went horribly wrong. Kaia began to lose control, lose grip on her walk. I had grabbed her hand, attempting to give her some of my own strength but it wasn't enough. And the next thing we knew, we were being loaded into an ambulance. Later, we were told we had been found unconscious on the side of the road. None of this was a good sign.
But just as the friendly nurse left our hospital room, a girl showed up - a girl claiming to know Sam and Dean Winchester. There were too many questions abounding so Kaia and I took off but we were intercepted by one of the creatures from The Bad Place that had somehow escaped.
It was a short hour later that both Kaia and I found ourselves at the mercy of the blonde, Claire, her adopted mother and sister, Jody and Alex, and her friend, Patience. Kaia, still shaken up from today's events, decided to wait inside the house as I opted to help the wayward sisters crack open the monster.
Wheeling it into the garage on a gurney covered by a sheet, Alex chuckled to herself, "Garage autopsy,"
I couldn't help but think this was a common occurrence for the family.
"Garagtopsy." I corrected her with a smirk and she returned it with a grin of her own as Claire shut the door behind us all.
We all gathered around then and I couldn't help but let my eyes drift to their mother, her eyes dark and her short hair graying. Clearly, she had once - or possibly still -worked for the law enforcement because there was an air of authority about her. I'd had my own run-in with cops, it was true but I don't think it was the reason she seemed so familiar to me...unless...
"Jody, you don't happen to, uh, have any other kids do you?" I asked, trying to seem offhanded with my questioning.
She shook her head, "No, just my two girls. Why do you ask?"
I waved a hand, "Oh, no reason. You just look like you'd be a mom to a Zack or maybe a Cody, that's all."
She frowned in confusion just as Alex unzipped the bag holding the monster inside, the foul odor of the corpse wafting up and making Patience gag.
"What's under the mask?" Jody asked.
"Let's find out." Alex shrugged before gingerly pulling back the apparatus sticking to the slimy skin of the creature.
After the autopsy was finished, all kinds of news was revealed that admittedly, we didn't really want to know. Instead of finding their mom that night, Sam, Dean, and Jack disappeared - likely to The Bad Place.
Now it was up to us to save them - the Wayward Sisters Plus Two.
