13. Karma's Real, Even If You Think It's Not

Sorry for the wait, I don't know why but I kinda lost my mojo. However, I'm going to try and get it back, not just for you guys but for me as well. Happy reading!❤️

As soon as Principal Freeman had called Maitreyi's name from the speakers, Maitreyi very reluctantly made her way to the office.

All of her friends were mad at her for something that she wasn't even responsible for.

Yes, Maitreyi had said that she wanted revenge on Natalia, however when she told Euchy and Zafira that she had changed her mind, she really meant it.

"I don't know why I'm here, Principal Freeman."

Not saying anything, Principal Freeman had put something gently on the table, even though they both knew that he wanted to slam it there.

The paper had the same piece of information as the one Natalia had showed her about having an abortion at only seventeen years old.

There was a lot of dirt on Natalia that Treyi, Euchy and Zafira had found last night, however the abortion was the most extreme one, most likely because of how young Natalia was.

"Do you recognise this piece of paper?"

Silently, Treyi had looked at it, then at Principal Freeman who was looking at her.

She was even the one out of Euchy, her and Zafira who had found out this piece of information. But she didn't print it out, let alone put it on almost everyone's locker for students to see.

For some reason, Maitreyi had thought that it would have been a good idea to deny everything, with Principal Freeman frowning at her.

Truth be told, he already knew that she was a part of this. He just wanted to see if she would denied that she was a part of this. And she did.

"Are you lying to me, Maitreyi?" Principal Freeman had enquired sternly. "Because if you are, then you're going to be in much bigger trouble than you're already in right now. I don't tolerate lying and I don't tolerate seeking revenge, especially on other students here."

She was lying about not knowing about it but she wasn't lying about posting it.

Either way: no one had believed her even if she had told them the truth.

That didn't mean that she was going to lie and say that she had done it though. Treyi just needed to prove her innocence somehow.

"Okay, fine. I know about it," she confessed candidly, sighing. "But I'm being serious sir. I most definitely didn't print it out."

Unsurprisingly, Principal Freeman found that hard to believe, primarily because Maitreyi was the one that had suggested seeking revenge on Natalia in the first place.

Euchy and Zafira were just flowing with it, if anything.

And as far as Principal Freeman was concerned, Euchy and Zafira too for that matter tried to tell Treyi that revenge was never the answer many times - but Treyi wouldn't take no for an answer.

"You're the only person I can see doing this, and I think you're the only person anyone can see doing this. No disrespect intended."

That might have been true, but knowing Natalia, she could have staged this whole thing herself just to get some attention.

Principal Freeman looked straight at Maitreyi's direction as soon as she had said that, with a displeased look on his face the whole time.

"Natalia can be obnoxious and an attention seeker when she wants to be. However she would never do something like this. She's been here for what, 5 months? She would never ever stoop this low."

Five months and she was already causing so much drama? Not that it would have been any better if she had been there for longer, but still.

Desperately trying to prove her innocence, Maitreyi had wisely suggested checking the CCTV cameras to see who had done this.

She had arrived at school after everything had happened - as in the news about Natalia being broadcast on almost everyone's locker.

Surely that was something, right?

"CCTV cameras aren't working right now. They need rebooting," Principal Freeman had explained. "Even if they were working, the person who did it was probably wearing a disguise and changed out of it afterwards. We are still investigating."

Treyi was hardly paying attention anymore because she was recalling what Principal Freeman had told her previously about Natalia.

If he knew about her terrible personality traits then how comes he hadn't expelled or suspended her yet?

"Because when you and Eucharia reported Natalia yesterday, that was the first time I had heard about her bullying someone. And even if people told me beforehand, it wouldn't be worth much without proof."

He had a point.

Long story short, Natalia and everyone in her group minus Zafira had three warnings. If they had broken all three warnings, then they would have all been suspended and Natalia expelled as she was the main one causing trouble.

Speaking of suspension, Maitreyi was suspended for two weeks or until they had proof that it wasn't her.

"Are you joking?! Seriously? But I'm innocent."

"I'm not saying you're not." Who was he kidding? He kind of was. "But even then, you were the one that wanted revenge on Natalia. And you should know by now that revenge is never the answer. Not just that but you dragged poor Euchy and Zafira into this. I'd have to suspend them too."

Maitreyi didn't see why he needed to do that, mostly since they didn't really do anything wrong.

"I understand though they were kind of involved in this. Even if you didn't take no for an answer, they should have still stood their ground or something. It wasn't by force for them to agree. If you wouldn't take no for an answer on seeking revenge, I still wouldn't have let you do it anyway."

Their suspension wasn't going to be as long as Maitreyi though. Theirs was only going to be a week. Maitreyi was suspended until her innocence was proven.

If they couldn't prove it in three weeks, she was expelled.

"This is so unfair."

"Not really. All actions have consequences - and whether they're good or bad depends on what you do. Surely you didn't think you could get away with this, did you?" He deadpanned. "Karma is real. Even if you think it's not. I'll talk to Euchy and Zafira at break. But for now - you're suspended for two weeks effective immediately at lunchtime."

He would have suspended her now but it wouldn't have been fair for Maitreyi to trek all this way and not go to any lessons. The school bus wasn't exactly free.

**********

Sort of like she was expecting, none of Maitreyi's friends had really talked to her for the whole day.

Anytime someone she cared about was mad at her over something, Maitreyi would have always tried to see herself through their eyes.

She had been doing that quite a number of times today, especially with Eucharia as she was mad at her the most although it was a bit difficult.

Random students gave her death glares left, right and centre but she didn't let that bother her after a while as she knew she was partially innocent.

Goodness knew what she was thinking but Maitreyi had thought that by lunchtime, everything would have been fine. Her suspension was affective immediately at lunch, but that was after she had finished her lunch.

If Maitreyi was still on the premises for more than 20 minutes after lunch had ended then they would have kicked her out.

Saniyah, Euchy and Candi Rose were sitting on a table, talking about something. They were laughing hysterically, hopefully not talking about Maitreyi.

Not really thinking straight, Treyi had gone up to them, greeting them. Like she had suspected, they had given her a dirty look, but couldn't really leave as there wasn't much space anywhere else.

"You guys still don't believe me when I tell you I'm innocent? I didn't print all of this information on Natalia."

She might as well have been speaking in code for all she knew, since her friends didn't believe her regardless. This was hopeless.

If there was anything good about this suspension, it was the fact that by the time Maitreyi had come back, all of this would have hopefully blown over and everyone would have moved on.

"You know exactly what you did, Treyi, and I'm not going to repeat myself," Eucharia rasped, annoyed. "Zafira and I wasted so much time trying to seek revenge on Natalia for you only for you to change your mind without even telling us."

"Not just that. You got Zafira and Euchy suspended." Saniyah had chimed in. "Whether you broadcasted the dirt on Natalia or not, we don't want to talk to you right now."

Speaking of Zafira, she walked up gracefully behind Maitreyi, with the girls greeting her as if Maitreyi didn't exist. It seemed as though Zafira was replacing her.

At least a nice girl was replacing her. Not someone like Syeda, Natalia or Cynthia.

That would have stabbed Treyi in the heart. When the girls weren't looking, not that they had cared much, Maitreyi walked away.

She had sat down by herself somewhere else, with her sunglasses and her hood up.

Little did she know that Kyriacos, Stevonté and Diamanté were watching the girl from afar. Or more so Stevonté- he was the only one that had believed that Maitreyi was innocent.

Nudging Diamanté, Stevonté had talked about Maitreyi.

"Say, you spoken to Maitreyi today? Either of you?"

Whilst Kyriacos had rolled his eyes, Diamanté frowned, with neither of them actually answering Stevonté's question.

"Why would I talk to a liar?" Kyriacos scowled. "This has her name written all over it. Natalia may have annoyed her but that's no reason to seek revenge."

"And you, Diamanté?"

"I don't have any reason to talk to her, plus Kyriacos is right. In a way, she betrayed Eucharia and Zafira."

Stevonté said that they weren't good friends if they had just assumed that she was guilty without any proof. Not just them - Treyi's friendship group.

He was going to be the bigger person and talk to her.

No one had truly done so all day, and whilst they couldn't have been blamed for thinking Maitreyi had caused this - it went right to just jump to conclusions without any information.

Kyriacos and Diamanté had tried telling their brother not to go to her, yet he didn't listen. Maitreyi only had five minutes left of lunch before she had been suspended, same with Euchy and Zafira.

He needed to make this count.
