forty one: running up that hill

March 24th, 1986

Max wanted to go give letters for her mom and her family but Steve didn't seem to like the idea. He didn't want to drive around Hawkins.

"No. No. No!" Steve exclaimed as the group started to walk outside. "Max, Max. Seriously. Seriously, I'm not joking. I'm not driving you anywhere."

"If you think I'm going to spend what is likely the last day of my life in the armpit that is Mike Wheeler's basement, you're out of your mind." Max replied.

"I can drive you know?" Brandon suggested and Steve immediately responded.

"No, dude, I do not trust you with my car." Steve replied.

"Why not?!" Brandon exclaimed as he waved his hands around.

"Because your car is broken and you might break mine." Steve replied to the other guy.

"My car is not broken." Brandon scoffed.

"Either one of you take me where I need to go or tie me down, which is technically kidnapping of a minor." Max spoke up stopping the two older teens from arguing. "And if I live to see another day, Steve, I swear to God, I will prosecute."

Max walked up to the Harrington boy's car and went to open it but it was locked.

"Open the door." She looked towards Steve.

"Uh, no." Steve retorted not wanting to do take her.

"I know a good lawyer." Max replied and Steve just scoffed. He eventually sighed and gave in.

"Henderson, that super walkie of yours better reach Pennhurst." Steve said to Dustin before unlocking the door.

Max immediately got in and she was followed by Beth and Ally and then Lucas and Dustin. Brandon and Steve then stepped in the front before Steve turned on the car and drove off.

"Hard Feelings" by Al Kerbey played on radio as Steve pulled up to the trailer park where Max lived. "This better be fast, Mayfield." Steve told the girl as she got out the car.

"Twenty seconds."

The girl headed inside to put down letters from her mom and her family. The others waited inside the car as she went.

"That thing's got batteries in it, right?" Steve asked Dustin about his walkie talkie.

"I'm not even answering that question." Dustin replied to him.

"Yes, it has batteries."

"Yeah, I got it."

Beth looked out the window of the car. She was worried as hell for her girlfriend and for Ally who'd been acting strange as well. She wanted to help them so badly and she would because they all were going to survive this. They will defeat Vecna.

Beth looked at her brother in the passenger seat. He seemed more upset than usual. Her thought was it was because of Steve. Brandon hadn't told Steve he liked him because he was afraid of rejection and now he was worried that he liked Nancy again.

Beth turned her head again to look at Ally who was squished next to the window with Lucas to her right. Ally had been listening to music on her Walkman. Beth knew Vecna was coming after her too but she was determined to help keep Ally away from death. And Max. And every single one of her friends.

Max suddenly came rushing towards the car and opened it. Beth moved over squished next to Dustin who was close to Lucas who happened to be close to Ally, so Max can sit next to her. She didn't know how they all managed to fit in the small car but they made it work. Maybe mainly because Max was basically sitting on Beth's lap almost. But she still didn't know.

"Hey, that was longer than 20 seconds." Steve told the girl but saw her face. She looked terrified as she slammed the door of his car.

"Hey, whoa, whoa. You all right?" Steve asked the redhead. Beth looked at her girlfriend in worry as she looked down.

"I'm fine. Just drive." Max replied.

"Did something happen?" Dustin asked her as Brandon turned to the kids in the back.

"Max, is everything okay?" He asked the girl.

"Can we please just go?" The redhead sighed and Steve obeyed as he drove off to their next and final destination.

"Turn here." Max told Steve. Beth looked to see they were heading towards Roane County Cemetery.

"Here?" Steve questioned as he pulled into the entrance. They drove into the cemetery and Max got out the car when it stopped.

Beth stepped out as well saying, "Max, wait."

"No, Beth, stay in the car." Max told her girlfriend but the brunette didn't listen.

"Max, what happened back at your house? You looked totally freaked when you got in the car." Beth frowned at her girlfriend. "You know you can tell me anything. Please."

"I told you I'm fine." Max snapped slightly at the brunette. Beth frowned before Max spoke again, "I mean, as fine as someone who's hurtling towards a gruesome death can be."

Beth hated that she said that. She wasn't going to die. She wouldn't let her. "Max...please talk to me." She muttered to the redhead.

The redhead didn't answer as Beth spoke again, "Please, Max. I don't want a letter. I hate that you keep saying you're going to die because you're not! I'm not letting happen! Just please talk to someone. Our friends. Me. I'm here for you." Beth explained.

Max frowned slightly before saying, "Just wait in the car. This won't be long."

Beth watched as Max walked over to her step brother's grave before she stepped in the car with a sigh. She frowned as everyone looked at her.

"Are you okay?" Brandon asked and Beth just nodded. She looked out the window seeing her girlfriend sitting in front of the grave. She hoped her girlfriend was okay.

A few minutes passed and Max was still sitting by the grave. She hasn't moved. Steve exhaled loudly before saying, "Alright, that's enough."

"Steve, just give her some time, man." Brandon tried.

"I have alright? I'm calling it. She wants to get a lawyer, she can." Steve waved him off as he stepped out the car and walked up the hill towards Max.

"I hope she's okay." Beth muttered.

"She is. She's going to be okay. We won't let anything happen to her. I promise." Dustin reassured her and she smiled slightly.

Ally looked towards the window and saw Steve getting closer to Max. "I hope you're right." Ally spoke and Lucas looked at her frowning.

Beth looked to see Steve shaking Max. She immediately grew worried and got out the car. The boys and Ally followed her as Steve's yells got louder. "What happened?"

"She's not moving." Steve replied.

Beth went onto her knees in front of Max and held her face. "Max. Max. Maxine, can you hear me?"

Max!" Dustin called as he heard Beth's voice crack.

"Max, you gotta get out of there." Lucas kneeled next to Beth.

"Shit." Brandon muttered as he stood next to Ally who bit her lip nervously.

"Max, please don't leave me. Please I can't lose you. Please." Beth whimpered as her vision got blurry from tears.

"Max!" Steve yelled before gripping Dustin. "Call Nancy and Robin! Go get 'em! Call Nancy and Robin! Go!"

"Hurry please!" Beth yelled as the curly haired boy ran off. Beth kept trying to talk to Max. "Please, Max. Please. Fucking bastard don't you take her away from me!"

Lucas had a hand on Beth's shoulder as he shook Max with the other. "Max!"

"Wake up!" Steve yelled.

"Guys!" Dustin came running back. He dropped Max's Walkman and a bunch of cassette tapes on the floor.

"What the hell is this?" Beth questioned.

"What's her favorite song?" Dustin asked.

"Why?" Beth questioned back.

"Robin said if she listens...it's too much to explain now. What's her favorite song?" Dustin exclaimed.

Beth looked at Max and started to search through the cassette tapes. "Shit! Where is it?" Beth cursed. Brandon, Lucas, Dustin, Ally, and Steve helped her look as the brunette started panicking. She felt like she couldn't breathe. God, she hoped she wasn't about to have a panic attack.

"It's right! I got it!" Beth exclaimed as she grabbed a tape of the song "Running Up That Hill" by Kate Bush. Max always played this song during sleepovers and talked about how she loved Kate Bush.

"Give it to me."

Dustin quickly grabbed the headphones to the walkman and put them on Max's head before Beth yelled, "Now!" Lucas then pressed the play button as the song started.

"Max!"

"Max, wake up!"

"Max! Wake up!"

"Max, we're right here!"

"Come on babe, I'm right here. Please!"

"Come on, Max!"

A few seconds past and Max suddenly became to float off the ground and into the air. Beth felt her chest tighten as she looked in horror. "No! Max! Come on, please!"

"Max!" Ally and the boys yelled.

"Max, wake up! Please baby please!" Beth cried looking up at the redhead. "Max, come home to me! Maxine!"

Max's eyes then shot up and she fell as her body hit the floor. She cried out as she thrashed around. Beth immediately crawled up to the girl and wrapped her arms around her. Max clutched onto her girlfriend feeling the fast heartbeat of the brunette. Max breathed fast before it went slow.

"You're okay. I'm here. You're safe." Beth whispered in the girl's ear.

"I'm still here." Max whispered back as she gripped onto the brunette's colorful jacket. She then leaned into the girl's chest as she sighed.
