BRAINIACS AND STALKERS

THERE WAS LESS THAN A MONTH LEFT UNTIL GRADUATION, MEANING THAT BILLIE HAD TO START GETTING HER AFFAIRS IN ORDER.

The Burbank girl resorted to making lists to do so, starting with a list of things she'd need in her dorm room come the fall and ending with a list of candidates who had the potential to fill her shoes as captain of the debate team. That latter list was only comprised of three people, given that there were only nine students on it to begin with and that included two seniors that were also leaving alongside Billie.

Kelly Martinez would be going into her senior year in the fall, and she'd been somewhat of a protege to Billie for the last two years. She was clean cut and precise in her debating, and was always by the book in how she dealt with topics.

Colin Wood was a sophomore with less experience, but had a massive hand in getting their team to the state debate conference earlier in the year. He was quick on his feet, employed a little bit of comedy here and there, and was also a solid pick.

And then there was Amelie Wood, Colin's twin sister who was the most reluctant when it came to joining the debate team in the first place. Once she did, though, she was a force to be reckoned with; she was damn cunning. Her logic for her skillful abilities lord in the fact that if she could talk her way out of getting speeding tickets, she could talk her way out of anything. An underdog.

Billie even made pros and cons lists about each one of her candidates, and still couldn't make her up her mind. She needed a second voice of reason, one that had no idea of the inner workings of the debate team.

Hence why she snapped a photo of her three different pros and cons lists and sent them to a certain diplomatic vampire overseas.

Billie
Who would u let inherit
the debate team throne?!

She sent the message at the beginning of lunch, like she often did with most of their messages during the daytime, and received his usual speedy reply.

Vamp King
Number three is the most
obvious choice; conniving
ambition is of utmost
importance when being a
great ruler.

That was the least surprising thing Aro could've ever said. The speech bubble re-appeared, typing away for a few extra seconds.

Vamp King
Yet, I'm sure you will
make the best decision. It's
rather thrilling to see your
passion for the sport, piccola.

Billie
Thank u! But it's not
a sport lol

It's a hobby we humans do
that involves verbally
arguing against other people
to see who can argue best :)

Vamp King
And do you?

Billie
Do I what???

Vamp King
Argue best.

Billie thought it over; was she the best at arguing? The short answer was no, but the long answer involved her ability to persuade others with her sheer friendliness. A smile to an opponent during a final debate often sent them reeling, stumbling over their words to provide Billie with the path to victory.

She played it nonchalant, though, not wanting to brag about something that was probably extremely trivial to him.

Billie
I can hold my own  :)

Vamp King
My smart girl,
just as I presumed.

The Burbank girl physically put her phone face side down, swallowing around air. A foot kicked her own, and her whiplashed expression met Jess' confused gaze. "You look like you just got something unsolicited," she murmured to her friend while the others were too busy ingrained in their own conversations. Her eyebrows were wiggling mischievously, taking in her friend's subtly rosy cheeks.

Billie merely rolled her eyes fondly, slipping her phone into the pocket of her yellow sweatshirt.

"No idea what you're talking about."

Billie had lived in safe little Forks her entire life, and never once had she been followed home school— if you didn't include Jane, that is.

It had been a particularly nicer morning, nice enough that she chose to walk to school and bask in the fresh spring air, only for the weather to drastically turn on her half way through the day. She was just lucky that Kelly Martinez didn't hold a grudge when Billie picked Amelie to succeed her next year, and gladly handed over a spare umbrella for the blonde to use.

The storm clouds casted shadows over the town, making Billie's walk back glum as the rain pelted against the grey umbrella she had clutched in her hand. And while she'd grown used to identifying Jane's familiar presence as of late (though, she had laid off substantially), she knew whoever was following her wasn't Jane.

Out of her peripheral she saw a tall, masculine figure almost tracking her steps, completely undeterred by the downpour. They were still pretty far behind her, but it still made Billie quicken her steps immensely. She needed a quick way to shake them and practically threw herself into the wooded trail entrance that was thankfully just ahead, on her right.

She knew the trail would spit her out at the end of her street if she stuck to the left when she got to the fork on the path. She'd taken it on dozens of occasions, and it usually saved her about five minutes of travel time too.

Dodging fallen logs and making sure her umbrella wouldn't be caught on any dangling branches, Billie marched along the path while squinting through the increasing downpour. She was mentally scolding herself because she should've taken up Angela's offer to drive her home, rather than politely decline since it was way out of the Weber girl's way.

She'd made it all of three minutes before she felt eyes staring holes at the back of her head. Turning slightly as she walked, she didn't see the figure that had been following her down the street, but the feeling remained.

The blonde nearly choked on the panic that was slowly inching its way up her throat, too busy looking behind her to clock the log directly in front of her.

She fell with a sharp cry, ankle twisting in a foreign way as she plummeted to the wet forest ground. Her umbrella slipped from her hand, and she was met with both the searing pain shooting from her ankle and the torrential rain pouring down from above. Within seconds she was drenched, grabbing for her ankle as she let out a violent sob— and the feeling didn't diminish one bit.

Her body was shuddering as she tried to stand, her foot dragging limply behind her as she scrambled for her umbrella. There was a tear in it, and she had to squeeze her eyes shut for a moment. And in that moment, a hand grabbed at her shoulder shoulder firmly.

A terrified scream, one she'd barely registered as it left her, sounded throughout the forest air. She scrambled away, and in doing so found herself on the ground once more as a crack of lightning sounded. Her hands before her face, shielding her from whoever was most likely there to kill her, she was babbling some incoherent when she heard another voice.

"Billie! Billie— hey, relax kid!"

Their tone was also borderline frantic, and when she garnered enough bravery to open her eyes, she was met with a figure she had come to know well.

"...Sam?"

He was crouched before her, shirtless and barefoot as though he'd just come back from a patrol, and his brow was pinched. Her hands lowered as a cough shook her frame, and he took that as a sign to come closer. "I heard you fall from a mile away," he told her, noting the way she went to uncomfortably grab at her ankle. He must've been near the treaty line that was close to the trail, then. "Can you walk on it?"

"Hurts, really bad," she whimpered out, but it was cut off by a self inflicted groan, "no, I'm fine, just, help me stand and I'll—"

Sam watched as she tried lifting herself up again, only to crumple under the weight on her sore ankle. It was definitely sprained at the least, and when she staggered backward, Sam instantly scooped the girl up in his arms.

Billie yelped, and the man could literally feel her teeth begin to chatter. "Hang on, yeah? I'll run us to mine," he said, and though his tone implied there was little to no room for argument, she still tried.

"I'll be fine at my house Sam, really. I don't want to bother you, and I'm sure you're busy with—" the words died on her tongue at the pointed glare he shot down at her.

"Don't fight me on this, Burbank," he shut down. "You're one of us now."

That was the last thing she heard him say before he started running them over to the reservation at an incredible speed, just as the feeling returned once more.

Hiding her face in Sam's warmer chest as she shivered, she willed it to go away.

But it didn't.
