The Safe Haven

The Safe Haven. We made it. Thomas was sleeping and healing in a hut. My leg had been seen too and was feeling much better but the limp was still slightly there, though the doctor was sure it would leave.

We hadn't been here for long but all of us loved it and loved the sense of safety it gave us. It was beautiful. Wooden, strong huts and tents stood by the beach as the crashing waves rushed over the soft sand. Vince had assigned me to be a medic, suggesting that it would help me forget everything, just like in the glade.

But I couldn't stop thinking about it. About all those years we spent cooped up in a maze, fighting for survival, just to find out we were lab rats. I presumed my mother, Ava, was dead but I didn't feel any amount of sorrow for her, only for the people who she got killed, like Newt.

I walked slowly along the beach. The water rushing over my feet every few seconds. I noticed the med hut door open and I slipped on my shoes before jogging over.

Thomas sat back down on the bed. He knew I was stood there but didn't move. His eyes fixed on his fiddling fingers. He was probably remembering.

"Hey.." I sat beside him, "Did you just open the door because you felt like it or are you gonna leave?"

Thomas lifted his head but still didn't turn to me.

"It was dark." He sucked in a sharp breath, "He's gone." He was remembering.

"I know. I'm sorry, T." I stuttered slightly.

"It's not your fault. Where are we?" He quickly changed the subject and I was thankful.

"The safe haven."

He turned to me with one eyebrow raised, showing that he didn't believe me.

"I'm not lying." I chuckled, "Come on, the others will wanna see us."

"Why? Where have you been?"

"By the sea." I smiled sweetly.

"The sea?" He stood up so he could see over my head and through the door. Sure enough, the sea was there, "Oh my god. We're at the safe haven." A thin smile slipped onto his face but it quickly disappeared.

"That's right. Now, let's go." I took his hand and dragged him out.

Thomas dug his heels into the floor, stopping us both so he could look around for a second. His hand let go of mine as he used both of them to wipe his face in disbelief.

We continued walking until we saw all of our friends sat down talking. Each one of them froze as Thomas came into view behind me. Minho was the first to stand up and hug him, then Brenda and so on.

"Group hug?" I pouted.

Gally sighed before pulling me in. I pulled Brenda. She pulled Jorge. Jorge pulled Aris. Aris pulled Harriet. Harriet pulled Sonya. Sonya pulled Vince. Vince pulled Minho. Minho pulled Thomas.

Someone coughed loudly and I lifted my head out of my boyfriend chest. Fry stood there with his hands on his hips, staring at us all sternly.

"How could yall have a group hug without me?" He moaned and ran up eagerly.

Now we were all hugging. Brenda and I were squished in the middle, laughing our asses off.

"Okay, okay. Please before my spine breaks." Minho breathed and we did as he said.

———

"We have come a long way together," Vince began his speech near the fire and we all listened, "So many have sacrificed so much to make this place possible. Your friends and your family."

I rested my head on Gally's shoulder and he pecked it before taking a sip of his drink. His free hand was wrapped in mine and was resting on my thigh.

"So here's to the ones who couldn't be here," Vince lifted his mug and so did the rest of us, "Here's to the friends we lost. This place is for you. It's for all of us."

"But this," He pointed to a tall stone behind him, "this is for them. So, in your own time, in your own way, come make your peace." He stabbed a knife into a table. "And welcome to the Safe Haven!"

Most of us cheered and clapped in happiness. Others were still sad but tried their hardest to smile.

"You all want some food?" Fry shouted and we all roared as to say 'yes'.

Minho and Thomas sat separately and so did Gally and I.

"We made it." I smiled.

"We sure did, baby." He cupped my face and pulled me into a passionate kiss.

I broke away, smiling and his hands stayed on my cheeks, stroking them.

"I've missed this. Doesn't this place remind you of the glade?" I asked.

"Yeah but I kinda like it. It's warm and safe. Plus, I'm with you again." He released my face and stared off into the distance.

———

Now all of the gladers were sat around a small, warm fire, separate from everyone else. I sat between Gally's legs with my head resting on his chest. Minho, Fry and Thomas sat opposite us.

"I miss them," I said breaking the silence, "I miss us all together. All 54 of us."

"We were all so young and happy, thinking that we would be stuck in those walls forever." Fry smiled weakly.

"Chuck would have loved it here." Thomas mumbled with his elbows on his knees as he stared at the burning flames.

I felt Gally suck in a guilty breath.

"They all would have." Minho added.

A stray tear rolled down my cheek.

"Alright. Shuck this sadness, it's getting boring." Fry said and ran off.

"What's his problem?" Minho asked, chuckling slightly.

"I have no-" I began.

Fry came jogging back with plates of food in his arms, "Yall, I got more food!"

"Why?" Gally laughed while Fry sat down, laying the food out in front of each of us.

"Because we would bond with the greenies over food." He did a thumbs up and I couldn't help me smile at his sweetness.

———

The rest of our friends had gone back to their huts, leaving Gally and I alone on the beach, watching the waves.

I yawned and rested my head on his muscly shoulder.

"Tired?" Gally wiggled slightly so his arm was wrapped around my waist.

"Mhm." I mumbled, nodding.

"Let's get to bed then. I miss my cuddles." He stuck his bottom lip out while standing up.

"Carry me?" I held my arms out in front of me, waiting for him to pick me up.

"Oh, hell no." He laughed and began to walk to our tent.

"Gall! Gally!" I whined like a child jokingly.

"Hurry up, princess! You don't wanna catch a cold!" Gally shouted back.

I rolled my eyes before sprinting after him. He had his arms held out wide and caught me when I flattened into his chest. He lifted me off the ground slightly and spun us around. Laugh after laugh kept leaving our mouths. I would remember this moment.

He dropped me to the floor again and I sprinted into our tent and dove under the covers, still laughing. He ran in and pulled the white duvet off me. Once he saw my blushing face he smirked and immediately laid down beside me.

"Hi."

"Hi." I stared into his green eyes and he stared back.

———

I must have fallen asleep at some point because I woke up with back to Gally and my legs tangled in his and his arm was around my waist. Bright sunshine was shining through the window, making it impossible to fall back to sleep.

I attempted to push myself out of Gally's hold but he pulled me closer to his chest.

"You aren't going any where." He grumbled into the back of my neck. The feel of his breath relaxed me.

"Why not? I can't get back to sleep." I turned to him but he still had his eyes closed.

"We don't have to go back to sleep but can we just stay here where it's comfy."

"Lady and gent," Fry ran in with two pots, "Get up!" He smashed them together causing Gally's eyes to fly open.

"Major deja vu." He groaned while rubbing his eyes to adjust them to the light.

"Y/n. Gally. Get your asses up."

"Fry, it's our first proper morning here." Gally tried to explain.

"So? It's mine as well? But I ain't being a lazy cow."

"See even Frypan thinks we should get up. And Fry is always right." I sat up and looked at my boyfriend.

"I- what- no. Just no." He said, confused.

"I won't take any offence from that." Frypan mumbled under his breath.

"Gall, come on," I leant down to get closer to his face and pecked a kiss on his nose, "please."

"Ugh, fine. But first, Fry what's for breakfast?"

"This ain't the shucking glade. I'm not head chef, I have no clue. But judging by the smell it's most likely," Fry sniffed, "Bacon and eggs."

"My favourite." I stood up, "Fry we'll get changed then we'll be right with you."

"Yes, ma'am." He saluted and jogged away, making to shut the door behind him.

I slowly turned to Gally who was looking me up and down.

"Come on. You don't wanna miss the bacon." I walked over to where we stored our clothes.

"I definitely don't."
