002. daydreams of a nocturnal poet
THE LATE AFTERNOON APPROACHED as the two teenagers made their way through the compact streets of Stars Hollow. The two walked side by side at a stopped pace, barely walking as they spoke to one another. The folk of Stars Hollow were already raving about the "rebel couple" that had taken over their town. Despite being seen just over an hour and a half ago in the bookstore. Sat at the bridge talking books, music, anything- for the past while. They found an appreciation for one another's company. Whether they realized that just yet or not.
Matilda's earbuds wrapped in her back pocket as Jess picked apart her music taste. There was too much 80's hair bands for his taste but he did promise her he'd give KISS another try. As long as she did the same with Jeff Beck. "Judas Priest is not overrated, but you know who is- Black Sabbath."
"Oh come on," Matilda scoffed at his words as he looked at her playfully. "There are like a million other metal bands than Judas Priest. So everyone needs to stop bringing it up as the honorary band."
"Fine. I'll agree with you there but you have to agree that Black Sabbath has like one good song." Jess told the girl who only pursed her lips, shaking her head at his words. "Never. They cannot be overplayed. You have to give Sweet Leaf a chance, it's fucking insane."
"If it sucks, I blame you." He told her as he opened the door to the diner, allowing her to go in first as they entered the small room. He looked at her for a moment as they shared a small smile, before being interrupted by a familiar voice. "Oh hey, I was just looking for you."
"Yeah I went to the bookstore," Matilda told her aunt as she remained stood beside Jess, neither of them moving. The two adults looked between the two teenagers, confused with what was happening. Luke was pleased his nephew had a friend, if they were even friends for that matter. While Lorelai attempted to remain open minded. "Well, Jess, now that you're here. I'd like you to meet someone."
"Hey. Hi, I'm Lorelai. Matilda's Aunt. I just wanted to meet you before Luke had a chance to fill your head with all kinds of little lies about me." Lorelai greeted the boy who only nodded his head, a simple "hey" coming out of his mouth. "Did you tell him about Rory?" Lorelai asked Matilda who only shook her head, she could feel Jess's enthusiasm beside her. "Well, I have a daughter. She's just a year younger than you guys. She can show you where all the wilding goes on.... if Matilda didn't already. Because the bookstore can get very rowdy."
The brunette teenager clutched her book as she winced at her Aunt's attempt at conversation. Jess was just talking to her for over an hour and now he was completely quiet. She understood though, her having a similar reaction when she first moved to the town of zero population. "Okay well, it's nice to meet you. I hope you like it here. So... class dismissed."
It was in this moment that Jess turned to Matilda, his eyes gleaming down into hers for a moment. "Uh, are you hungry 'cause I can-" And just like that, Jess made his way up the stairs to the Danes residence. Lorelai only turned towards Matilda in confusion as she took a seat beside Lorelai, seeming unaffected by his odd actions. "So that's Jess?"
"Yup," Luke replied to his friend as he grabbed a mug and poured his employee a cup of coffee. He wasn't phased by Jess Mariano's actions either which made Lorelai's head spin. It reminded her so much of Matilda with her mother, and if they spoke more than one word to each other all havoc would break lose. "Very chatty."
"He's adjusting. He just got here. He probably just went out and realized there are twelve stores in this town devoted entirely to peddling porcelain unicorns. I've lived in this town my entire life, I still can't believe it." Luke said.
"I'm sure that's it." Lorelai nodded along hesitantly as she turned towards her niece. "So... I heard from Sookie who heard from Jackie who heard from Miss. Patty who heard from Andrew's sister who heard from Andrew... that you were in a bookstore with a cute boy. I'm assuming it was Jess unless this has turned into a saloon."
"Mhm," Matilda nodded as she took a sip of her coffee, not really wanting to discuss the situation. Not that there was a situation. "Well then, what do you say we try and make him feel more at home? Maybe he'll be less John Bender if we do."
"Your house, your call." Matilda nodded her head in silence as she plugged in her earbuds. Lorelai nodded to herself as she turned towards Luke who was fixing the register. "Hey, listen, I have a fabulous idea. What are you doing tomorrow night?"
"Why?" Luke asked grouchily as if Lorelai was an idiot. "Why don't you and Jess come over for dinner?"
"Dinner?" The diner owner repeated. "Sookie will cook, Rory and Tilda will be there. It'll be a little 'Hey, welcome to Stars Hollow and see, everyone here's not straight out of a Fellini film' kind of an evening."
"Okay that would be nice, thanks." Luke nodded as he walked upstairs to go grab his wrench. The bell to the diner rang as a scholarly dressed sixteen year old walked in. "Oh my God, I hate her!"
Matilda took out an earbud at her enraged cousin, ready for the entertainment the bambi eyed girl would bring her. "Me too," Matilda nodded as Lorelai chimed in. "Ah, me too!"
"You two have no idea who I'm talking about." Rory looked at them like imbeciles as Matilda furrowed her eyebrows. "Well for you it makes sense, you hate everyone."
"Solidarity, for me, sister." Lorelai smiled as Rory groaned, Matilda listening to the sounds of Bowie in her left ear. "Paris."
"Ugh, well that I should have guessed." Lorelai nodded along to her daughters words as she continued a rant on the psychotic acts of her frienemy Paris Geller. The three exited the diner soon after, only finding there as a common meeting place after their daily activities. Matilda was grateful Stars Hollow High School didn't start for another few days, as Rory continued to rant about her horrible day.
"We are having a little gathering tomorrow night," Lorelai announced to her daughter as she threw an arm around her two girls. "What kind of gathering?"
"Well, Luke's nephew's here, and I thought we could try to make him feel a little more at home." The tall woman told her daughter as they walked down the street, approaching their house. "Did you meet him?"
"Ask Bianca Stratford, over here." Lorelai joked as she pointed towards her niece which made Rory furrow her eyebrows. "She's much more Kat," The girl told her mother as she turned towards her cousin who was disinterested. "Well Kat, what is he like?"
"He's Jess." The rebellion shrugged as she pushed Lorelai's arm off of her, and hurried her speed. She walked fastly infront of her family as they only shared a glance, as they continued their walk back home.

AN ESCAPE TO STARS HOLLOW always seemed like such a brilliant idea. Living with her Aunt and cousin who were a bit too bubbly, in a town that seemed almost too fictional. She was away from Boston, she was away from her parents, but one thing was the same for Matilda; The dark nights. Whenever she looked up at the dark ceiling in the later hours, she was brought right back between the white painted walls that her mother had forced on her. She could almost hear their staff wandering down the halls and making sure everything was spotless for Mrs. Fitzgerald.
Matilda tossed around in her sheets for awhile every night. Even with an incredibly soft flow of a The Stone Roses CD, Matilda's mind was not tapped into the relentless melodies. Her mouth housed a frown as she sat up and glanced over at her nightstand. Which was a stool Lorelai found at a garage sale. The lips shaped clock (guess who bought it) read '5:52.' You see, Matilda a few months ago would have just been falling asleep by this time. But the Gilmores had tricked her ways... even though it was summertime. For her at least.
Her thoughts kept reverting to past mistakes: drunken monologues, missed opportunities to wish her mother farewell sooner. The countless nags of the woman who's eyes matched her own continuously reminded her of how shitty of a person she was. It was like she'd forgotten she wasn't a Gilmore during the day, considering the whole town called her one anyways, but at night she was reminded who she was. Matilda Ambrose Fitzgerald. Just a rich kid who had to drink away her sorrows and blast music so loud that she couldn't hear her own pain.
The teenager rubs her puffy eyes once more as she rolls over and reaches for her guitar pressed against the wall. The amp and the headphones soon follow and soon enough she's thinking random words to a sad beat. Her thoughts soon revert back to a time not long ago in the very same room.
"I've got a new song," Matilda admits after awhile to the blonde boy, who only twirled a set of drumsticks in between his fingers. "Oh? Is it about... well, it has to include some insane metaphor that reverts to total sadness. And somehow mentions getting ass somewhere in there too."
Matilda's eyes turn to August as his words end, licking her lips before running a hand through her mess of hair. "In a sense, I write about guys asses. But in a sense... they're about longing and loneliness and..." Her cutoff was prominent in what she said. It wasn't that she was embarrassed or worried about what she'd said and how it would be perceived. It was exactly what she said, and exactly what she meant. Her words were about longing and loneliness. End of fucking sentence.
Her thoughts were suddenly brought back to the present. As if she were apart of A Christmas Carol. Matilda Scrooge groans to herself as she glances down at the notebook full of nighttime scribbles. Random nothings that make no sense. Full of naughtiness or down-right depressing lines. Her eyes are getting heavy at this point. But she knows sleep is far away. Especially considering the sun was rising soon enough. So another night without sleep it was...

THE AFTERNOON couldn't have arrived sooner. The day of dinner with the Gilmore's β except this time it wasn't a horrid experience because it in fact was Luke and Jess as the guests, rather the three Gilmore Girls travelling to Hartford. It was the afternoon of the dinner when Matilda dialed a familiar number, canceling on her "friend" for their plans that evening.
Noah and Matilda had met a few months ago at school, he had just moved outside the small town of Stars Hollow. Their similar tastes in music and cigarettes had pulled them together to be friends β specifically his all too charming smile and the way his ass fit into his jeans. Friends wouldn't be the exact word Noah would use, however, he saw them as whatever he wanted.
"My Aunt planned a dinner tonight that I have to go to." She explained to the blonde haired boy, her finger twirling with the phone chord as she spoke. She could hear him huff as he rubbed his temple. "Oh come on, Matilda. Blow it off."
"We'll still go. At nine-thirty though, not eight." Matilda pushed her hair behind her ear as she leaned against the hall table in which held the house phone. Lorelai Gilmore was arriving home from work at this time, entering the house as she waved at her niece and walked into the kitchen with the pile of mail. Matilda shot her a nod as she brushed her hand through her hair and ignored her calls for sleep. "What's this dinner for anyways?"
"Luke - his nephew just moved to town like yesterday. So Lor's throwing him a 'this whole towns not a... ' god, I don't even remember. Just a welcoming dinner or something like that." She shrugged into the phone as the boy remained silent on the other side of the line. "This nephew... he your age?"
"Jealous, Verona?" Matilda smirked, questioning Noah who's infamous smirk she could hear from the other side of the phone. "Nine-thirty." He repeated her words from earlier before hanging up the phone. Matilda only pressed her lips together as she put the phone back on the desk.
The sound of tapping heels against the hardwood floors made the girl glance over at her aunt who was making her way through the hallway and towards the stairs. "So.... date tonight?" Lorelai called as she headed up the stairs, her niece following. "No."
The women entered their own rooms, Matilda making her way over towards her record collection as she flipped through the various records. Glancing past her few classic rock records, and fiddling through the various metal ones and setting on the British Punk Rock section. Recognizing The Clash record she was looking for she placed it on the table, pressing down the needle. It was when she bounced on her red and black flannel blanket with her new book that her Aunt Lorelai walked in. This time she wore a pair of bootcut jeans and a t-shirt replacing her work clothes.
"So, what are you and mystery guy doing tonight?" Lorelai played the words that came from her lips as she stood in the doorway. Her niece kept her eyes on the words underlined by the diner man's nephew just the day prior. Suddenly finding a new light on this poem. "Movie."
Lorelai bopped her head as she walked in the room, taking a seat by Matilda's feet making her groan. The music couldn't be any softer. "I thought the movies were closed since last week when Kirk did something on that carpet and they can't get the smell out."
Matilda shut her book as she turned to face her Aunt, her weight now pressed onto her side as she sighed. "Why are you pushing this, Lor? I thought the whole point of me moving here was to get away from that."
"I'm... I'm sorry, Tilda. I don't mean to push. I just don't know this guy you've been mysteriously slipping out with the past few months. Besides that he has a 1979 camaro..." She coughed the last sentence, hiding the gossip Babette told her a couple nights ago. When the older woman was night-knitting (long story) at one o'clock in the morning and saw the car pull into the driveway. This was the same night Rory and Lorelai had passed out on the couch at ten, watching as many Molly Ringwald movies as they could.
Lorelai still hadn't told her niece she knew of her sneaking out. She didn't want to be that person, the same person Matilda's mother was and the same person Lorelai's mother was. But it all came down to the safety of her niece who was now her responsibility. Not that anything wild happened in Stars Hollow, but to be fair the Gilmore didn't even know if her niece was in Stars Hollow at these nights. She could be in Pennsylvania and back by morning.
"I'm just worried 'bout you, that's all. Normal crazy Aunt instincts." Lorelai gave her a small smile as she looked around her room for a moment. Matilda paused before speaking, catching herself before saying something stupid. But instead her mouth shut right back as Lorelai exited the room, nodding along to the music as she made her way downstairs and began to prepare for guests.

THE GILMORE HOUSEHOLD smelt of various dishes by seven o'clock that evening. Having a chef best friend was Lorelai Gilmore's greatest pleasure in life β after being in the Andrew McCarthy fan club of course, and maybe being a mother. It was ten past eight when Sookie continued to talk to her boyfriend, Jackson, of how she was worried that Jess wouldn't appreciate her pot roast. The produce man reassured his girlfriend as Matilda entered the room. Her hair was messily down her back, a grey and black ringer tee clung to her chest matching the black pair of trousers she wore.
She placed her walkman on the table as the chef looked at her anxiously. "You know Luke's nephew! Does he eat pot roast? Or chicken? Mashed potatoes? Oh god- does he eat cheese?" The nervous woman's excitement in her dishes made Matilda's eyebrows furrow as she left the room without a word, entering her cousin's room. "Why is she like this?"
Rory turned her head from the computer, turning towards her cousin who plopped down on the bed. Her ponytail moved at the action as Rory chuckled softly. "Hey don't hate on the lady! This anxious cooking leads to the best meals."
Matilda only rolled her eyes as she placed her headphones over her ears, Quiet Riot playing in her ears. Before she could even immerse herself into the song, Lorelai entered the room as she watched her niece and daughter converse. Matilda only turned up the volume as she nodded along only to have the headphones removed from her ears. "Hey, before I forget. Be home by midnight please. Call if you're gonna be out any later."
"Yeah, yeah." Matilda mumbled as she pulled the headphones back over her ears. Metal Health (Bang Your Head) blaring through her veins. By the time the song was over, Lorelai was yelling at the girls to join the festivities. Rory groaning as she typed up the final question on the document Paris had sent her about their school paper. Matilda, however, just did not care to get up. It was when the dark haired boy entered the room that Matilda finally removed her headphones.
He shot her a glance as Rory introduced herself to him. "Hey, I'm Rory." The girl smiled as Jess' eyes remained on Matilda who stared into his. His eyes were lost as he turned towards the large bookshelf behind him, glancing around and finding lots of familiar titles. "Yeah, I figured."
"I have to tell you, I am pretty hooked on that goddamn book." This was Matilda's way of greeting the teenage boy as he eyes turned from the book towards the girl, a smirk tugging at his lips. "Listen to me and all things in life will bring you just a gay old time."
The humor was tugging at his lips as Matilda fought the roll of her eyes β sitting up on the bed. "So, KISS?"
"Big Dynasty fan." She groaned at his words as he flipped through the various books on the shelves. Him only saying such as he remembered her saying it was her least favorite album of theirs, the day prior at the bridge. Rory couldn't help but feel like she was third wheeling as she watched the two interact. They felt like the only two in the world in this moment, but she knew she was probably the only one who thought that. "You're no fun."
"I could loan you that if you want, it's great." Rory announced from the other side of the room as the girls watched Jess pick up a book from the shelf. His eyes darted over towards her for a moment, shaking his head in response. "No thanks."
"Well, if you change your mind." She nodded politely as she pressed the final button on her computer necessary for the document. She stood up as she entered the kitchen and joined in on the festivities. The group was moving their dinner into the living room, considering the household had no designated dining area.
Jess Mariano's dark eyes were locked on Matilda Fitzgerald's blue ones. He liked the way they looked into his, he noticed this just yesterday. After sitting on the bridge together for quite a bit of time the two felt familiar enough with one another at this point. Maybe more familiar than they realized. It was Lorelai Gilmore's call for the two that pulled their gaze away from one another, as they entered the living room for the rest of the evening.
Forty minutes of chatter and eating the delicious feast Sookie prepared was a given. As well as Jess's 'I want to go home' glare. Which he still shocked himself for putting up with the very uninteresting evening, but something told him to. It was probably the secret beer break that made him put himself through it. Or maybe the girl sat beside him whom was also disinterested. He didn't really know.
"It was not Anthony Michael Hall," Rory laughed as the room roared at her mother's story of how she swore she saw the actor in a grocery store six years ago. "Yes, it was. I would recognize him out of anyone."
"Oh yeah, you have the hots for him." Sookie giggled at her best friends words as Lorelai scoffed. She shook her head at the allegations as she attempted to defend herself. Before she could even open her mouth, the sound of a knock on the door made her stand up. The action of Matilda jumping up made the group look at her in surprise, she just knew who that would be. He of course was thirty minutes early, always an entrance.
She was already halfway towards the door before anyone could question her, her heart was racing. God (John Bonham) knows why.
He stood there in all his glory. His leather jacket opened to show off his chest, a red button up underneath that could hardly be called a button up with how little it was buttoned. A tight pair of jeans hugged his ass matching a pair of leather boots. A stick of gum smacked in his mouth, his perfect lips moving along. His curly blonde hair sat as it normally did, he looked fucking perfect. As always. "Oh, hi." He spoke with that charming smirk that could make anyone drop.
"Nine-thirty?" The girl questioned as he tilted his head softly, his lips coming together as he did so. He stay like this for a moment, his eyes watching hers deeply before coming back into a life threatening smile. He responded to her words as he leaned forward, his lips pressing hers softly. She gave in immediately, her knees fighting the urge to drop at the touch. His hand grazed her side as she reached for his neck, her hand coming around his hair.
He rarely greeted her with a kiss. The two weren't the kind. But she could only assume it was due to the fact he was immensely jealous, he wanted her to know she was his. "Matilda who did- oh, hi."
The dark haired girl pulled apart from the man immediately as her heart raced, glancing at her aunt immediately. Noah smiled with pride, he felt accomplished. "Hi. You must be Matilda's cousin."
Matilda could see through his little words. Buttering people up with that charming smile since '82. "Oh, no. I'm Matilda's Aunt." She smiled as she let out a laugh. His smile held as he let out a chuckle, glancing down at Matilda. "Miss. Gilmore."
"Uh, Lor, this is my... friend Noah." Matilda introduced softly as Lorelai looked at her with a smile. The three stayed silent for a moment before Lorelai clapped her hands together. "Oh, you should meet everyone."
"No, he doesn't-" Matilda's words were stopped as Noah reached for her hand and pulled her through the hall into the living room. They followed Lorelai as Matilda's small hands held onto one of Noah's hand. They stopped abruptly as they were now in the view of everyone. His smile bled through the room as they all glanced at the too pretty boy.
"Uh guys, this is Matilda's friend Noah. Noah...?" Lorelai stopped herself once she realized she didn't know the last name of the boy. "Verona," He answered simply as his pearly whites shown. He glanced around the room, his hand pulling the girl closer and closer the moment his eyes darted on the punk sat beside the empty chair.
"Oh, you're Matt's kid. We went to school together. I'm Luke." Luke greeted politely as the two shook hands with Noah's free hand. "Yes, you're my girl's boss. Heard so much about you."
My girl. The words made Jess shiver. He spent hours with the girl the day prior and not once did a boyfriend pop up. The whole group could think the same way as the girl had been quiet about any mentions of, anything really.
"And you," Noah's voice was now pointed towards the dark haired boy pushed between the empty chair once housing the small girl and Luke. "Must be the man of the hour."
"Something like that," The boy muttered through his teeth. His obvious aggravation made Noah smile even wider. Lorelai then introduced the boy to her best friend and her boyfriend, his eyes now on the end of the table. "And you're the genius cousin."
"I wouldn't say genius but.. yeah I'm Rory. Nice to meet you!" She smiled as the two shook hands. Noah's smile making all the girls in the room swoon β hell even Matilda was ready to pounce the boy. "We better be going. Great to meet you all."
Noah's words made Matilda let out a breath she didn't even know she was holding, her gaze avoiding the dark haired boy sat few feet away from her. As the group bid their farewells, the couple was exiting the house when Noah let go of her hand. He pulled out a cigarette as he lit it, stopping to stand on the porch for a moment. Matilda took in the air as she turned towards him. A small smile was present on her face.
"You're a suck up," She laughed softly as he puffed out the smoke and handed the girl the cigarette. He shook his head as she took the cigarette and placed it between her own lips. "Let's go have the workout of our lifetimes, shall we?"
