EVERYTHING HAS CHANGED
CHAPTER ONE
ROUGH NIGHT
βΎ β½βΎ β½βΎ β½βΎ β½
Meilani McCall sat at her desk as she tried to finish typing up her report for school. School only just started last week, and they were already getting papers and projects. What was this? College? Where you got homework the first day and no one gave a shit? She chewed on her bottom lip as she got stuck on the conclusion for her essay.
Meilani was always good with essays up until the conclusion because she never knew if she ended it the proper way. She liked things to be perfect and, much like her boyfriend, was one of the few straight-A students at Beacon Hills. Her perfect record meant a lot to her... thank you very much. Plus, it set her different from her twin brother, Scott McCall, in something. She loved being a twin and loved him more than anything, but it was nice having something different from your identical twin sometimes.
Just as she got an idea on how to do her conclusion, Meilani heard a loud noise from outside her window. Turning her head slowly, Meilani looked at the window to see the shadow of the tree outside her window on her sheer white curtains blowing softly in the night breeze. When she went to turn back to her laptop, another loud noise sounded which freaked her out, causing her to shoot up out of her rolling computer chair which caused it to roll back across her hardwood floors.
It definitely wasn't her mom, Melissa McCall, because she was doing another overnight shift at the hospital. Definitely wasn't her dad because he was a deadbeat who walked out on them eight years ago so there was no way in Hell it was going to be him outside. Meilani also knew it wasn't her twin brother because he's been locked up in his room for the past hour preparing himself for lacrosse tryouts tomorrow.
Upon seeing a shadow starting to grow behind her curtain that looked a lot like a human, Meilani grabbed the closest thing to her, which was her desk lamp. It probably wouldn't do much damage, but she could still yell some pun about the intruder needing to brighten up if they thought they could mess with her and then hitting the person over the head if they tried to attack.
The person outside her window, pulled up the window and put one leg through. The intruder then them fell in the room off balance. The person groaned out in slight pain and stood up to their feet. They looked around the room, and Meilani took this opportunity of them being distracted to slowly make her way forward.
The person noticed Meilani moving and made their way over to her. After a few steps, Meilani could see their face in the moonlight and she let out a sigh once she noticed it was just her boyfriend, Stiles Stilinski, who turned on the light that was next to him. He looked down to see her "weapon" and chuckled. "A lamp, Lani, really?"
Shrugging, Meilani walked over to her desk and put the lamp back down on it. "It was the closest thing I had. My question is, why are you trying to scare the shit out of me at eight o'clock at night?"
"What? A boyfriend can't come give his girlfriend a goodnight kiss," Stiles asked, trying to sound innocent but Meilani knew him too well. They were best friends since they and Scott were three years old. She knew all his tells by now and with how nervous and antsy he was acting, she knew he was both lying and hiding something from her.
Meilani crossed her arms and gave Stiles a 'you're joking' look. "Stiles, I know you and you only come in through my window when you want to go do something illegal."
Stiles went to object but when Meilani continued to give him the same expression, he sighed in defeat. "I know it's late and all, but you have to hear me out on this one. I just saw my dad leave twenty minutes ago. Dispatch called and they're bringing in every officer from Beacon and even State Police."
"For what exactly?"
"Two joggers found a body in the woods," Stiles said nonchalantly and rocked back on his sneaker clad heels, as if people finding dead bodies in the woods was an average thing.
"Why are you so excited over a dead body exactly?" Meilani asked, not understanding why Stiles was getting all excited over it. She was probably another victim of those rape and murder cases Stiles' dad is always going out on.
Stiles smirked at his girlfriend and said, "Oh, that's the best part. They only found half of the body. We're going to go search for the other half."
Meilani's eyes widened at the new information. Now that was something to be interested in, especially since that's never happened in this town before. Beacon Hills was the most boring town ever because nothing good ever happened until now.
"So, are you in or are you in?"
"I'm in but what about Scott? You really think he'll go out with school being in the morning?" Meilani asked, biting her lip as she thought the whole thing over.
"I'm very good with convincing people to do things. So, you get that cute little butt into something other than pajamas and I'll deal with the big dog," Stiles told her, a grin plastered across his face.
Meilani sighed and nodded. "Okay fine but if I get another lecture from him, it'll be your funeral."
"It's worth it. Meet us in front of the house and then we'll head out," Stiles leaned down to give Meilani a kiss before running over to the window and climbing back out of it.
Meilani watched Stiles clamber back onto the tree before turning back around and walking over to her closet to grab a pair of running shorts and a hoodie. Shoving her feet into her Nike running shoes, Meilani grabbed her phone from her nightstand and made her way out of her room.
She prayed that Stiles wouldn't get them in trouble or worse, killed.

Stiles stopped his blue Jeep a few feet from a wooden sign that read BEACON HILLS PRESERVE. NO ENTRY AFTER DARK. He hopped out of the car with his flashlight already in hand as Scott and Meilani follow after him, flashlights also in their hands. The twins had to run to keep up with Stiles' fast paced walking as he went up the hiking paths.
"Are we seriously doing this?" Scott asked as the trio made their way through the wooded area.
"You're the one always bitching that nothing ever happens in this town. Something finally happened so you should be happy," Stiles said as he led Scott and Meilani up the path.
"I don't like that you dragged Lani into it. She can get hurt and, besides, I was trying to get a good night's sleep for practice tomorrow."
"Thanks for your concern, Scotty, but I don't think you have to get rest for sitting on the bench. It's not that hard to sit," Meilani said to her twin. Scott's asthma made it hard for him to actually keep up with all the other guys so Coach Finstock only played him for about five minutes before taking him out for the rest of the game. "If anyone should get rest it's me because I'm going to try out."
Scott nearly stopped walking when his sister's words processed in his head. "Lani, I told you that you can't play. It's an all guys team."
Meilani rolled her eyes at her brother's comment. "It's not fair that there's only a guy's team. I want to play so I'm trying out. Finstock won't even know it's me until I take off my helmet when practice is over, and he tells me I made it."
"Babe, I love you, but they don't allow girls to play with guys for a reason. You could get hurt," Stiles said, trying to back Scott up. He knew Meilani could play lacrosse really well, but he didn't know how he felt about her playing with all the guys. They were all perverted assholes and the guys on the other teams would target her the whole game.
"Yeah because you think we're fragile. I can handle playing with a bunch of guys thank you very much," Meilani snapped, causing the two boys to shut their mouths. They knew once she got started on a rant she wouldn't stop so they were smart to stop while they were ahead.
After a few moments of walking, the trio didn't find a body anywhere. Speaking up, Scott asked, "Which half of the body are we even looking for, Stiles?"
Stiles stopped walking for a moment while he thought over Scott's question. "Um, I didn't even think about that."
Raising an eyebrow, Meilani decided to speak up as well. "And what if whoever killed the girl is still out here?"
"Also, something I didn't think about," Stiles sheepishly replied.
"Glad to know you've really thought this whole thing out. You really need to work on your attention to deal, Stiles," Meilani told him, feeling slightly annoyed her boyfriend didn't even have a plan. She wouldn't have run out with him if she knew he didn't actually do any planning for this. Her paper for school could be done already if she had stayed home.
Racing up the hill they were currently climbing, Scott's breathing got a little labored. Bringing out his inhaler, he took a puff out of it before throwing it back in his red zip-up hoodie's pocket. "Maybe the severe asthmatic should be holding the flashlight?" He suggested once he caught up to Stiles and Meilani.
Stiles slowed down, causing the twins to bump into him. Following Stiles' gaze, Meilani and Scott noticed a clearing with yellow police tape marking off the perimeter. Dropping down and turning off his flashlight, Stiles watched the scene from behind a fallen branch. Meilani and Scott dropped down on either side of Stiles as the three watched the scene in front of them.
The cops were currently pulling up the zipper of the body bag on the ground before lifting it to place it into the Medical Examiner's van.
"Is that the second half of the body?" Meilani asked, turning her attention towards the two boys to her right.
"No, they would have called off the search if it was. Come on," Stiles answered before racing off ahead of them into the darkness of the woods and up another hill. Below them, flashlights continue to glide across the floor searching the shadows. Stiles watched the scene again for a few seconds before racing forward again.
"Stiles, wait up!" Scott yelled, running after him with Meilani. Scott quickly ran out of air and he stopped again to take another taking another puff from his inhaler.
Once realizing the McCall twins weren't behind him anymore, Stiles slowed his running to look behind him to where they stopped. Barking caused Stiles to spin around and he falls to the ground when the search dog snapped his teeth at him.
The state trooper holding onto him, pulled the dog back before shouting, "Stay right there!"
Hiding behind a tree, Scott quickly pulls Meilani with him and they both peek around the side to see what was going on. They were a fair distance away from the scene where they could see and hear everything, but far enough away that it would take a flashlight to see them. Hopefully, it didn't come down to the troopers going further into the woods with their flashlights to see if Stiles had anyone with him.
"Hold on, this little delinquent belongs to me," Stiles' dad says, stepping into the light and making the state trooper step back so he could scold his son. "Do you listen to all of my phone calls?"
Slowly standing to his feet, Stiles smiles innocently at his dad. "No... not the boring ones at least."
Sheriff Stilinski nodded before looking around the woods. "And where's your two sidekicks? Meilani and Scott?"
"What? They're both home. You know Scott wouldn't want his sister in the woods this dark and Scott wanted a good night's rest for lacrosse practice tomorrow. It's just me...alone...in the woods...at night."
Shining his light into the shadows of the woods, Sheriff Stilinski calls out, "Scott? Meilani? You guys out there? You won't get in trouble if you show your faces."
As the light neared the tree they were hiding behind, Scott pulled Meilani further behind the trees into the shadows so Sheriff Stilinski couldn't see them.
When he came up with nothing, Sheriff Stilinski turned his flashlight back to his son. "All right, young man, I'm taking you back to your car and we're going to discuss a little something called invasion of privacy." Grabbing Stiles by the neck, he walked Stiles back the other way towards Stiles' car.
Scott waited for Stiles and his dad to get a good distance away before grabbing onto Meilani's wrist and pulling her behind him back the way they came with Stiles. With Stiles being forced to leave with his dad, the twins were going to have to walk back to the house. Scott was seriously going to kill Stiles in the morning for this. He knew this would be a bust and that bringing Meilani along was a horrible idea.
Coming to a fork in the trail, Scott halted and tried to remember which direction the three had come from.
Meilani was going to step in front of Scott to show him which direction to go when a rustling in the trees caused them both to snap their heads in the direction of the noise. The ground started to shake and there was a loud rumbling sound that sounded a lot like a stampede. When a herd of deer jump out of the clearing of the trees, Scott grabbed Meilani and dropped to the ground with him covering her body with his so he would get most of the hits.
Once the woods fell silent again, Scott slowly looked up to make sure the coast was clear. Standing up, he held his hand out for his sister to take before pulling her up. "You okay, Mei?"
Meilani nodded as she dusted herself off. "Yeah I think so. Can we just get out of here? I usually don't get this scared but the whole silence of the woods is making me nervous. I feel like we fell into a freakin' horror film."
Patting his pockets, Scott realized he dropped his inhaler. "Fuck," he muttered as he pulled his phone out. "Let me find my inhaler and then we can go."
"I'll help you," Meilani said, digging out her phone as well and pulling up the flashlight. Scanning the forest ground with her phone's flashlight, she helped Scott look for his inhaler.
Noticing something under her flashlight, Meilani moved the light over more to see the half of the body the police were looking for. She screamed, backing up and tumbled down the hill that was behind her. She heard Scott call out for her and she watched as he tried to make his way down to her to make sure she was okay.
Standing up, Meilani removed the twigs and leaves from her hair and looked around her to try to get a bearing on where she fell to. Seeing a pair of glowing yellow eyes staring at her, Meilani went to turn to run away when the animal jumped towards her. Falling to the ground, she cried out in pain as the wolf sank its teeth into her side.
Scott yelling for his sister caused the wolf to stop in its actions and look up the hill that Scott tried to slide down. It growled slightly in annoyance before it ran off in the other direction just as Scott made it to the bottom of the hill where Meilani laid in pain.
"Oh my god, are you okay? Let me see," Scott said as he gingerly removed Meilani's hands from her side to show a massive bite mark in her side. Groaning inwardly, he picked Meilani up from the ground bridal style. "I'm going to kill your boyfriend, Mei.."
Gripping onto Scott's shirt, Meilani buried her face in Scott's shirt trying her best not to cry. She knew it would only make Scott worry more and she didn't want him to worry more than he already was.
This was going to be a long trek home.
