6. She's a What?
Marilyn opened the door to the last room at the end of the long hallway. She didn't expect anyone to be inside. Confusion marred her face when she saw Elijah, already inside the room.
"What are you doing here?" he asked her.
She walked closer to him. Instead of responding directly to him, she spoke,"Did you know, Elena lied to you last night."
"I believe she did." Elijah replied to her, looking back at the table. "Burnt sage. Mother was doing a privacy spell."
"I could see in Elena's form last night that she was lying to you. She didn't want to lie to you but she still did it. Why? I'm afraid you will have to ask her." Marilyn crossed her arms furrowing her brows.
Elijah looked ather still processing the fact that she was Klaus's Fiancee. "What?" She asked him.
"What did you mean when you said you saw Elena's form?"
"Right. Haven't told you guys. I have the ability to see through a person. As in, a way to catch onto the underlying meaning to the words. Guess the lies, secrets."
Elijah gestured with his hand for her to go on, "as in you can see the ulterior motives if any."
"No. I can see if someone is hiding something, I notice the body language, their subtle changes in appearance which otherwise might go unnoticed. And Elena has some of it. I could read her body language last night. Now what are you going to do?"
"Whatever it takes to get the truth." Elijah determinedly stated.
"Alright. If anyone asks, I will be tending to my business after I clean up my clothes." Marilyn told him and turned around to leave. "Have you seen Nik?" She asked Elijah. "He left earlier and I didn't see him in the study."
"I think he went with Kol to get a drink or two at the Grill." Elijah told her.
Klaus and Kol were enjoying their time in Mystic Grill. Both oblivious to the chatter happening between the History teacher and the doctor with the Salvatore brothers a few feet away.
Klaus sat next to Kol drinking Bourbon. His mind drifted off to Marilyn who remained home. A small text message from Marilyn early in the afternoon told him she was finishing the last remaining documentations needed for the biggest fashion week of the year.
"Where is your lovely lady?" Kol inquired.
"She is busy dealing with the fashion show preparations." Klaus told him.
"So she's beautiful and smart. Seems like your type. But wasn't it blondes?" Kol asked jokingly making even Klaus crack a small smile.
"Yes but Marilyn is...a conniving beauty. She has an undeniable goodness in her but let me warn you, don't go on her dark side. You won't come out alive." Klaus told his younger brother taking another sip of his drink. "She changed my opinions about love. It isn't a weakness. It's power."
"You are either whipped or she changed you into someone different. Either way, who are you and what have you done with Niklaus Mikaelson?" Kol teased. Klaus hit him upside on his head, rolling his eyes.
"Drink your scotch."
"She is diabolical. It's saying something because I am saying it." Klaus added with a smirk.
Time passed as the brothers continued drinking their choice of scotch. Klaus's phone buzzed. He pulled it out.
*Vixen* flashed as caller ID.
"Hello love."
"Hey. Where are you?"
"Mystic Grill with Kol. Would you like to join?"
"I'll be on my way now."
"See you then, love." Klaus ended the call. "Marilyn is making her way here."
"That's good. Another round?"
Hours passed as the sun had already set but Marilyn didn't turn up. Klaus kept looking at the door every few minutes. She was not returning his texts or picking up his call.
The door chimed open again making Klaus snap his head it's way only to turn away in dismay when Caroline walked in instead of whom he expected.
"Brother calm down she'll be here." Kol jeered. "Isn't that Marilyn's grand niece?" Kol asked pointing at Caroline who was making her way to them.
"Yes. Caroline. How are you? Want a drink?" Klaus offered.
"No I rather die of thirst." She spat forcing a smile. Caroline discreetly turned to see Alaric Saltzman watching her converse with Klaus. She turned back to Klaus and mouthed 'follow me'. Klaus furrowed his brows understanding her.
"Stay here. I'll be back." Klaus told Kol and followed behind Caroline outside of the grill.
Crossing the street Caroline stopped by a bench and quickly turned around. "What can I do for you Caroline?"
"I need to understand something." she began, "I don't understand this. Marilyn told me about knowing who I was before Katherine turned me. She apologized to me about being turned against my will. That I was just a stupid plan of hers."
Klaus hesitated for a moment but began nonetheless. "Katherine was only supposed to come into town find the doppelganger and return but she decided to act on her own. She turned you to be a vampire I would use in the sacrifice."
"But I was never..."
"Taken. I knew who you were. Caroline Forbes, daughter of Sheriff Forbes and Bill Forbes, Marilyn's younger brothers daughter. Family matters above everything to her."
"But uncle Artie..."
"He and Bill are the only ones who over the years kept in touch with her. Yes, Marilyn hid from them that she was engaged to a vampire let alone an original from Bill but Artie has been aware of it all."
"Why does it matter?"
"She just wants to meet you. No ulterior motives." Caroline seemed on edge as she attempted to keep a conversation with Klaus. He tried analysing her actions attempting to find the flaw in it.
"What are you doing?" he asked her suddenly.
Caroline furrowed her brows at him. She smiled deriliously, "I don't know what you're talking about. I just want to know why suddenly I am related to the world's most influential woman and the man she's engaged to, is the one who basically made our lives crazier than they are."
Before Klaus could respond to her, he felt a piercing pain in his chest. The pain sent him to his knees and relying on the bench to balance him. "What have you done?"
Caroline crouched down to look at him properly. "I don't...I am not doing anything." Klaus looked straight into her eyes as suddenly it dawned on him. With a strong angered expression, he sped away.
He speeded into view behind the Grill and pushed Alaric out of the way. He undaggered Kol and leaped at Damon holding him against the wall by his neck.
"I should have killed you months ago."
"Do it. It wouldn't stop Esther from killing you." grunted Damon placing a hand over his.
"What did you say about my mother?" Klaus hissed.
"You didn't know we were friends with your mommy? Yeah, we both got a few things in common. She hates you just as much as I do." Damon reiterated slightly prideful of having an upper hand for once.
"Leave them, Niklaus. We still need them." They heard Elijah speak from up the stairs. Every head turned to see him standing there unbothered by the action scene unfolding down the stairs.
"Where's our mother Elijah? What did she do?" Klaus asked. Elijah walked down the stairs ignoring Klaus's question.
"You tell me where the witches are or I'll have my sister kill Elena right now" He threatened turning to Stefan.
"You told me we had until after nine." Damon said frustratedly seeing as their action plan slip away.
"I am sure Rebekah would be more than happy to start her work early." Elijah informed them condescendingly.
"While you're at it, tell me what have you done to Marilyn?" Klaus demanded another answer.
"The witches house." Stefan hurried with his words taking into note Elijah's threat. "I don't know where Marilyn is. We haven't seen her."
The brothers hurried away leaving the three originals to take the road to their mother themselves. "Elijah, did you find Marilyn anywhere?" Klaus asked his brother.
"No she was in her study till I think afternoon before she left. Where is she?" Klaus looked down on the ground wondering where she must be.
"If the Salvatore's don't know than did mother do something to her?" Klaus worded his biggest worry.
All three speeded away leaving nothing to chance.
(Two hours ago)
The sun was setting when the Silver Corvette halted in style outside of Mystic Grill. Marilyn turned around locking her car, slightly startled by the man standing there to welcome her with a condescending smile.
"Hello." He said offering a faux smile.
"What can I help you with Stefan?"
"It seems you are quite the mystery. Looking exactly the same since you started working. What is your secret."
Marilyn smirked before giggling, "just blessed I guess. Years don't shine on my skin. Now if you'll excuse me, I have places to be." She attempted to walk past him but Stefan stopped her yet again.
"Who are you? More importantly what are you?"
"Trust me sweetheart, testing my patience isn't going to do well. And for what I am? I'll leave it to your wildest dreams to figure out." Marilyn winked at him and pushed past him. Marilyn must have been just two steps away from the door when a hand covered her mouth and a sharp sting pierced through her back. She felt her body being dragged away from the main footpath, into the alley.
"You're a vampire or not ── famous or not, doesn't matter. You can be killed." she heard a very familiar voice tell her. Exhaustion slowly blanketed her, bringing her closer to the cold feeling she had read in books. She leaned on the wall slumping on the ground with a limp, filled with murderous rage.
**********
Outside the Witch' house in the woods of Mystic Falls Damon stopped his car and turned to his brother. Their sole intention of arriving at the place was to do something they didn't want to. They needed to find a way to save Elena Gilbert and their only chance was the stop Esther's plan.
The two stood outside the car looking at one another, both wondering who should do it. "So how do we know they're going to be at the Old Witch House?" Damon asked his brother.
"We don't. But if they're not, then we have about ten minutes until Rebekah tears Elena apart."
"You know, if we sit this out, Esther completes her spell, Klaus dies, you get your revenge. It's what you wanted the whole time. The only collateral damage is...." Damon suggested.
"Elena." Stefan pressed his lips into a thin line.
"You know what she'd choose."
"She'd let herself be killed to save her friend." Stefan voiced a well known truth about Elena.
"Yep."
"Hm. If we do this, it'll wreck her."
"Well, she'll hate us. Thing is, she only has to hate one of us. Only one of us has to do the actual deed."
"Hm. So, who's it gonna be, brother?" Damon pulled out a coin.
"Well, heads I do it, tails you do it." Damon picked sides ready to flip the coin.
"Awful lot of effort for someone who pretends not to care about her any more."
"Pot, kettle, brother." Damon told his brother. Damon flipped the coin and caught it putting it on his other hand. He removed his hand to show Stefan the result.
The two brothers marched a few steps to the old Witch' house before someone staked them just below their hearts. The two grunted in pain dropping down on their knees.
"Sorry you went through the pain of tossing up a coin but nobody's doing my business for me." They heard a very familiar voice speak to them. Damon felt a needle being plunged into his neck. They walked passed them leaving the brothers on the ground grunting in pain.
Inside the Witch' house two women navigated their way through the wrecked house with barely any light around.
"This place has some serious vibe in it." the older one commented.
"The witch spirits will protect us from the Originals, but we should get into the basement." the younger Bennett witch assured her.
"Hello." They flinched in panic turning around to stare right at a face glowing in the candle lit wooden hallway. Her brown eyes had taken a darker approach in appearance, the red of her hair was just a shade away from looking like blood itself. The reason for it could be the flickering flame of the candles and light breeze travelling in through the left open door.
Bonnie looked positively terrified of seeing the woman stand before her. If her memory served her right, the afternoon must have caused the hurdle to be out of the way but they stood before her carrying growling anger in eyes and at fingertips.
The new entry inside the house could see and understand that the information had passed from ear to ear.
"I do not react well to a knife in my back...well, when it is stabbed metaphorically. How do you think I should react to having an actual knife being shoved through my back, through my heart?" She quizzed walking closer to them.
"I swear it must have been a mistake. Please, listen to me Marilyn it must have been an accident." Bonnie begged taking steps away from her.
Marilyn tilted her head a little to her left smirking. She pulled the older woman into her grip and held her with her hand around the woman's neck. "I swear this was also a mistake." Marilyn mocked her.
"Well well well, aren't you the absent mother? Abby Bennett? Isn't she your mother, Bonnie? Nik told me about her." Marilyn asked her. She nodded.
"If I feel a flicker of magic Bonnie, it won't do well to your mother." Marilyn threatened tightening her hold.
"Look, they didn't mean to do it. Please let her go." Bonnie pleaded with Nyx.
"What do you mean they didn't mean to do it? They didn't mean to kill me?" Marilyn growled. She pulled out a syringe from her back pocket and stabbed the contents into Abby's veins.
"I was minding my own business. We all want to mind our own business, Bonnie until you decided to help a woman you have never met in your entire existence. The house was because we were finally going to be a family until you and your precious best friend decided to make a few changes in the plan." Marilyn bawled our in rage throwing the syringe on the floor.
"Please don't do this. Damon's hand must have slipped." Bonnie tried making excuses for him trying to save Abby from Marilyn's hold.
Marilyn smiled widely looking straight at Bonnie. Marilyn pulled out a knife from the back pocket of her jeans. The blade shone in the golden flame of the candles. The edge of the blade was covered in dry spots of blood.
Marilyn took it and in one quick move she jammed the knife in Abby's neck. "Oops, my bad. My hand must have slipped." Bonnie let out a loud shriek seeing her mother drop to the wooden floor as blood oozed out of the wound.
"Take this as a warning. Go my way again and I will show you my true extent and it won't be a pretty sight." Marilyn said her last few words and walked out.
The brothers were on their feet with the stakes out of their bodies. "Oh look at that, you finally worked as a dynamic. In coordination if I may overstep my boundaries in speaking." She chuckled showing off her teeth. Marikyn didn't give them much time and walked away.
All the time Marilyn made it her business to disrupt Esther's plan, the brothers faced their mother in an attempt to make her stop whatever it was she planned.
"That's lovely. We're stuck out here, while the favorite son plays sacrificial lamb. How pathetic you are, Finn." Kol taunted his oldest brother standing beside Klaus and Elijah.
"Be quiet, Kol. Your brother knows virtue you cannot even imagine." scolded Esther but keeping a cautious eye on everyone."
"Whatever you think of us, killing your own children will be an atrocity."
"My only regret is that I did not let you die a thousand years ago."
"Enough. All this talk is boring me. End this now, Mother, or I'll send you back to Hell." Klaus was right about his doubts in his mother's timing to return back. It wasn't a reconciliation like she posed it to be for so long.
"For a thousand years, I've been forced to watch you. Felt the pain of every victim, suffered while you shed blood. Even you, Elijah, with your claim to nobility, you're no better. All of you. You're a curse on this Earth. Stretched out over generations. If you've come to plead for your life, I'm sorry, you've wasted your time." Esther went on to tell her son's her motive behind her actions.
A strong gush of wind came sharply from behind the brothers. The fire flickered almost to the point that it would extinguish but kept burning nonetheless.
"Marilyn." denoted Esther as she noticed the woman approach the circle. "I am truly sorry for you, Marilyn. I know you love my son dearly, I see it in your eyes. But it must all come to an end."
"No it does not. It does not ever should come to an end. You are the woman who made him ── them and here to stand saying how awful they are? So you truly believe that any of us would believe that you hadn't considered the repercussions of your actions?"
Esther's stand changed suddenly as a she sensed something disrupt the magic she drew for power. "No! Sisters! Do not abandon me!" Esther pleaded in a calm voice.
"Mother!" Finn called her. The torches around the pentagram flared up giving a small window to let Finn escape with his mother. Marilyn thought on her feet and turned around, her arms reaching up to grab Klaus by his shoulders.
The brothers stood anticipating the warmth of the fire, only felt the cold of the night crawl on their skin. Elijah and Kol uncovered their eyes suddenly shockingly aware of what protected them from the fire that rose up.
The black of the night for them was breached by the sight of the bright white large wings shielding them from the ritual pentagram. Marilyn straightened her back and gazed at Klaus. She shrugged her shoulders and the large pure white wings vanished.
"Love. Where were you? I tried calling and..." Klaus placed his hands to her cheek, checking her immediately for any injuries. Marilyn placed her hands on top of his, leaning on him for support attempting to calm her nerves.
"Love tell me what happened. Whose blood is this." he pleaded softly, his eyes flickering from the large blotch of blood on her shirt and up to her eyes.
"I just..." she attempted to answer. "Damon Salvatore killed me." Klaus grew angrier than he already was.
"I'll kill him. I'll make him pay for what he did."
"Are we completely going to move past the large white wings that we're just in our faces?" asked Kol.
"Kol, not now." said Elijah before Klaus could snap at the younger brother.
"I was outside Mystic Grill when the two brothers got me. Damon stabbed me because I am your fiancee and some unknown being." Klaus wrapped his arms around her pulling him in a hug.
"This feels good." she mumbled against his chest.
"Hello? Still waiting for an answer!" Kol interrupted them.
"Right." Marilyn pulled away from the hug and faced the two brothers. She clapped her hands together. Her words which followed after made Elijah and Kol's jaws to drop open in shock and surprise.
"Hello. My name isn't actually Marilyn Vaughn. It's Marilyn Morningstar. I am Lucifer Morningstar's daughter."
