11. The Departed

Klaus stared furiously at Marilyn, "have you completely lost it?"

"She is family Nik. I am going to save her. You should leave with Rebekah. I've already phoned Elijah and Kol. Fortunately their tour didn't take them far away from the city. Join them. I'll be there soon."

"Love he is dangerous." Klaus tried reasoning with her. "You can die. Can't you see you are putting yourself in danger here."

"I understand Nik. But it's Caroline."

"Don't go yourself. Send someone else."

"I plan to." said Marilyn with a wink.

No sooner than later, Marilyn pushed open the front door to the Gilbert residence alarming the occupants. "Hello there." She greeted them with a malignant smile.

The Salvatore brothers were standing by the kitchen island where Bonnie sat still dressed in clothes from the decade dance.

"Caroline is stuck inside the classroom with a ruthless killer. Mind telling me your plan of action. You know just so I can tell you how horribly wrong you are and what it is that can be done instead."

"Why do you care about her anyway? Shouldn't you be off following Klaus?" Damon tried bossing Marilyn which was a proven mistake.

"I care about Caroline Forbes because you don't give a rats ass about her." She told them calmly, glaring at Damon. "Are we going to plan on saving her or should I try some other form of persuasion?"

Stefan interfered moving to stand between Damon and Marilyn. "Elena's not here. Alaric has her and Caroline and he's gonna kill them both unless Klaus turns himself over."

"Now, I know you're not asking me to walk into a certain death." Klaus conveyed from the threshold to the house.

"I really wish we could. But unfortunately, if Alaric kills you there's a one in four chance that we die too." Stefan replied moving to walk out on the porch of the house.

"I'll take those odds." Damon noted approaching them.

"And a hundred percent chance that Tyler dies."

"I'm good with that too." Damon responded.

"If you are so enthusiastic about dying I would love to volunteer?" sassed Marilyn crossing her arms.

Stefan raised a hand to stop her, "Why don't we just figure out a way to put Alaric down?"

"Okay, how about Damon sneaks in and distracts Alaric, while Stefan grabs Elena and carries her to safety?"

"Huh, that's a great idea. What's to stop me from getting killed instantly?"

"Nothing." Klaus offered a deviant smile along with it. Bonnie walked out of the house with an idea clearly in her head based on her expression.

"I might have an idea. My mom used a desiccation spell on Mikael that immobilized him for over 15 years. If I can get it, I might be able to use it on Alaric."

"If and might? Your words inspire such confidence."

"I'll get it. But even with the spell, we'll need a lot of vampire muscle to take him down. Including yours." Bonnie spoke.

"He is not going anywhere." Marilyn I'll save Caroline."

"What about Elena?"

"I'm sure her two lovers are more than capable and quite motivated to rescue her themselves. If not, I regret to say it but you two are as useless as a pimple." Marilyn commented with a witty grin dangling on her lips.

"Here's something just so we're clear, the sun sets in about eight hours. If we don't succeed before then, Elena will be dead, I'll be gone, and the rest of you will be left to fend for yourselves."

Klaus and Marilyn stormed away getting into her Corvette before driving away.

"Anyone else starting to think they belong together? Evil meets diabolical." Damon commented watching Marilyn's car drive away from the driveway.

"I think so too." Bonnie agreed remembering the time she unlinked the siblings after Marilyn "convinced" her. Bonnie remembered the short conversation she had with Klaus right after she exited the room. She did overhear them feeling a new form and level of anger in herself.

No one from the permanent residents of the small town in Virginia were liking intruders walk around freely undermining them.

Marilyn Vaughn or Morningstar as known to very few was making her way into the list of enemies for a lot of people. Was she bothered? Nothing stirred her interest unless it posed as even a bit of a challenge.

"Thank you, Marilyn."

Marilyn smiled. "Elizabeth please. Caroline is my niece. Of course I was going to help her. Please tell her to stay home for a couple of days and I'll come visit her soon."

"I will. Take care Marilyn." the call ended. Marilyn pressed on the accelerator and sped out the

Marilyn drove her car as decided to pick up Rebekah by the Wickery Bridge. She parked the car to a side where Rebekah waited for her.

"Where's Nik?" She asked getting into the passenger's seat.

"He is coming in his car. He had to pack up the blood and something...frankly I wasn't paying attention to much of his blabber." Marilyn waved off driving off as soon as Rebekah was buckled up.

"He is still after Elena isn't he?"

"He is. I just tried to sugarcoat it. At least she wasn't his first choice." Marilyn told her.

"What do you mean?"

"I meant that Alaric's life is tied to Elena's. If she dies, so does he." Marilyn explained her.

Rebekah nodded getting a clearer picture. "Killing two birds with one stone."

"Exactly. He gets his blood supply and we don't have to run."

Rebekah turned to look at Marilyn still processing a lot of questions and answers she already had. Marilyn sneaked a few quick glances at Rebekah seeing her struggle with something.

"Rebekah if there is something you need to ask, go ahead. Don't be shy."

Rebekah hummed putting on a pair of sunglasses before she turned slightly to face Marilyn. "Alright, I need to ask about you──half-angel being."

She chuckled, "ask away original vampire."

"What is it that you can do?"

"You mean like do I have super strength or any other ability?" Rebekah nodded when Marilyn looked her way. "I am a manipulative bitch." She deadpanned.

Rebekah rolled her eyes. "I know that. What are your abilities. You can do something."

"That's what I am telling you. I can manipulate to my hearts desire. Of course there's super strength but that's more of a common ground."

"You can tell me to do anything you want?" Rebekah followed up.

"Actually I can make you do anything I want but you wouldn't realise you did that thing because I told you. Not unless I blurt out a clue or something." Marilyn corrected the vampire.

"Have you used it on my before?" Rebekah asked in an accusing tone.

"No. I prefer using it on my enemies or when I want profits. Like how I used it on Bonnie to get her to unlink all of you."

"Interesting. Follow up though. Why do you love Nik? It's obvious by the looks of it you are out of his league."

"Yes, it appears I am but he wasn't an easy fish to fish if that's what you intended to hear. I took us about five years to actually confess our feelings."

"How did you fall for him?"

"He's different. Curious, has a very different approach to life, world...you'd know if you give him a chance. He is a story teller. He has the will to weave a web of such intricate philosophies and thoughts using the threads of his experience and lives lived for the past centuries that it is basically difficult to not fall for him." There was a spark in her eyes as she worded out her thoughts.

"I can never word particular things to answer why I love Nik. It's difficult to name what you love when it's one of the most delicately strong emotions to have been made." She confessed truthfully.

"That was beautiful. I wish I had a love like that." Marilyn knew Klaus's stubbornness to keep Rebekah from having any suitors who would court her. She also knew about Marcel and Rebekah──from what Klaus narrated to her.

"I am sure there is someone just waiting for you." Marilyn assured her.

Suddenly, her phone buzzed inside her purse "rebekah do you mind taking that?" Rebekah opened her purse and got out the phone.

"It's someone named Amanda." Rebekah told her.

"She's one of the hybrids I asked to keep an eye around the house. Answer it." Rebekah answered the call while Marilyn pulled the car off the road.

"This is Rebekah, Nik's sister. What do you want?" Rebekah's brows furrowed, her mouth falling open agape. "What? Who? When did this happen?"

Marilyn stared at Rebekah as rage and then grief appeared on Rebekah's face. Her aura changed to be as red as blood meaning she wanted to murder someone. "What's going on?" asked Marilyn as soon as Rebekah ended the call.

"They dessicated Nik." Marilyn's eyes widened before they narrowed. Her nostrils flared when she pressed her lips into a straight line. She started the engine again before she severed the car onto the other lane on the other side of the highway making the tires make a screeching sound from being rubbed over the asphalt.

Rebekah placed a hand on the dashboard and the other gripped the door in slight fear as Marilyn sped madly over the highway.

Rebekah looked at Marilyn who radiated an impression she was rather familiar with. "We cannot murder them until we have his body." She spoke cautiously, of Marilyn who held the steering wheel into a tight grip making her knuckles turn white.

"I am well aware of that little setback but doesn't mean I cannot persuade in other ways." Marilyn responded before she increased the speed of her car.

Marilyn Vaugh was her father's daughter. She was Hell's princess and she was the woman of kindness. She was the hellish paradise only a few could survive. Marilyn was as kind as anyone you'd expect but she was also the hell's fire that would burn you if you tried playing with it.

By barely going dark sky, Marioynmet Elijah outside Elena's house. "We'll get him back, Marilyn." He promised.

"Oh I know we're getting him back. There's not doubt about it." Marilyn decreed sharply.

"Why don't you let me do the talking?" Elijah compromised seeing a vengeful spark in her eyes, one just like Rebekah, he had seen far too many times to over look.

"How about I walk in, do some head banging and get the location?" conferred Marioyn.

"I am definitely doing the talking. Come along." Elijah walked ahead of her.

He walked inside least bothered to actually knock on the door or anything. "Hello again." He wished Elena who stood in front of him a little away inside the house.

"Missed me?" Marilyn asked, as she walked to stand next to Elijah.

Elijah and Marilyn walked inside uninvited and took a seat at the chair. She stood behind Elijah's chair with her arms crossed.

"About Alaric. All we need is to take that stake away from him. Once he's been disarmed, the weapon's in my possession, my family will scatter to the ends of the earth. And Alaric will follow us." Elijah bargained without running around in circles.

"And you'll just run?" Stefan speculated.

"We've done it before. Klaus and Rebekah spent the better part of the thousand years evading my father. What's another half-century while Elena's able to live out her natural life?" Elijah continued.

"We finally stopped him, Elijah. After everything that he's done to us I can't just let you bring him back." Elena pleaded.

Marilyn opened her mouth to answer but held her tongue when Elijah raised his hand to stop her from saying anything.

"I give you my word, Elena." Elijah enunciated "I will not revive Klaus within yours, nor even within your children's lifetimes. Perhaps, it'll teach him some manners." Marilyn looked at Elijah in shock of his words. His words rung in her head a few times before she caught hold of his trick.

Marilyn has a descriptive image of Elijah's abilities given to her by Klaus when he told her about his siblings. The oldest and the noble one. He possessed the articulate art of trapping the person in a web of words.

"Why should she trust you?" this time it was Matt who snapped, "all you've done is screw her over."

"And for that, I'm ashamed. But, know this, I would have myself killed you the instant we walked through that door tonight. So, Elena I leave it to you to make the decision whether to trust me or not." spoke Elijah still keeping a calm voice.

"No no no no. Did I mention no? His lunatic siblings will kill Elena the first chance they get." Damon's voice came over the phone.

"They would not. Rebekah and Kol will respect my terms." Elijah informed them.

"What about Klaus's bitch? She will kill Elena just out of spite."

Marilyn had enough of his sweet talk. "That's enough. Elijah had his chance. My turn. Are you going to give me the location or not?" This time it was Marilyn who silenced Elijah with just one sharp look with her eyes.

"He is evil. He killed my aunt Jenna and terrorized us. Why should we?" Elena was provoking Marilyn. She let out a dry scoff hearing Elena.

"And you are pure hearted, aren't you? A complete saint with the Salvatore brothers worshipping the ground you walk on. Don't take the high horse when you haven't done anything that cannot be qualified as evil or even vindictive, Elena Gilbert." Marilyn spat venomously. "Did you forget your best friend was abused, used and manipulated by Damon? The man you continuously deny to be in love with? Did you forget the amount of scarring that incidence had on Caroline's mind? Especially knowing that same man wanted to kill her because he decided she wouldn't make it as a vampire. Did you forget it was you for whom Stefan sold his soul only to find out how cozy you got with his older brother? Bonnie was ready to die protecting you because you don't deserve to have your death marked by the greater evil. Don't give me the bull that you never wanted anyone to do anything like this, because let me tell you you never did anything worthwhile to save them." Marilyn pressed her lips into a thin line catching her breath as she spoke it all in one.

Marilyn placed her arms flat on the table looking at Elena in a way she had seen her father when he had to confront someone. "Tell me Elena, doesn't it bother you how easily you seem to forget what that man did your best friend? Or are you that dense and shallow and self centered to forget it with a snap of your fingers?"

"He took away my──" stefan trailed off when Marilyn snapped her head to him.

"Humanity. Yes, the pride of the ripper of Monterrey. Don't put yourself above him. You stole our family out of spite. You couldn't handle that your girlfriend was slowly leaning on for support and comfort with your brother, Damon when all you did...it was her. Don't condemn him when he wanted to protect his family. He wanted to live a peaceful life after centuries of tumultuous state. It isn't anything you wouldn't do."

No one dared to say another word letting Marilyn's words echo in their heads over and over again. Marilyn paused for a moment, waiting for a response but recieved none. Marilyn, in a blink of an eye held Matt in a chokehold.

Elena shreiked and stood up as did Stefan and Elijah. "Elena, there is a reason Nik calls me a Vixen. Are you or are you not going to give me Nik's current location?"

"Marilyn let him go." demanded Elena in a slightly raised voice.

"Elena a human can survive only four minutes without air and currently thirty seconds are over and time ticks further waiting for none. Give me Nik's location and you can have your entourage member alive. So, what's it going to be?"

"Marilyn enough. Stop this please." Stefan begged trying to step forward, but Marilyn was quicker.

"Two minutes left Elena, are you that selfish that you'd rather let your friend die than give up the location of a man who would have left you alone with your two lovers? Look at your friend. He is turning red. I can feel his heartbeat speed up. Come on, what's it going to be?"

"I will give it to you." Elena replied hastily, having no other choice. Marilyn smiled triumphantly. She let go of Matt. He dropped to the floor gasping and heaving.

"Look at that. You have once again, played Tag with death and won. How does it feel to be the only human in a city of supernaturals? You know bartender if you ever were to write an autobiograph please name it "the immortal human". It does have a nice ring to it."

Elijah tried his best to avoid any form of physical expression of what he felt. He saw so much of Klaus in Marilyn that perhaps Soulmates aren't two opposites who attract but rather two similar who find their way to tame themselves with one another.

The plan was in place. Nervously, Marilyn kept pacing around the area where she and Elijah waited for Rebekah and Klaus to reach.

Marilyn was busy chewing on her nails being a nervous wreck. Elijah looked at her but before he could talk to her his phone rang. He answered the call. Marilyn looked at him seeing him turn away from her. "What is it?" She asked him as soon as he ended the call.

Before Elijah could respond, Rebekah speeded to them in tears. "He's gone, Elijah. There was nothing I could do to stop it." She croaked hardly managing to keep herself calm.

The siblings kept talking in a hushed tone with each other.

"Will someone tell me what's going on?" Marilyn shouted at the two.

"Marikyn...he is...I'm sorry. I tried, I promise I did everything I could." Rebekah needn't use more words. Marilyn's teary eyed gaze turned away from Rebekah. Marilyn saw the dried leaves fallen on the ground before her vision blurred. She used the bark of the tree to compose herself. Her mouth fell open, her brain telling her to scream out the pain but her voice was lost. Marilyn felt a lump in her throat she wanted to claw out but didn't know how. There was an altering thump of her heart that distracted her for a few seconds from the buzzing in her ear. Elijah and Rebekah continued discussing something but Marilyn had lost all interest.

"I haven't given my heart to anyone in centuries." Klaus confessed to her. The two were mindlessly roaming through the city of New York with a bottle of top shelf Bourbon in hand.

"I should consider myself lucky then." Marilyn said with an amused grin.

"I am the lucky one." Klaus told her. Marilyn stopped him and turned him to face her.

"We both scored a bull's eye." They stared at one another before both beamed into wide smiles.

The yellow street light above them, the almost empty footpath, the stars looming around under a blanket of clouds and the mist of the night had stunned themselves to watch as the two stared into one another's eyes.

Klaus looked at her feeling something he has stirred clear of. He took his chance and knew this time was far different than the ones he remembered. "I love you, Marilyn." He blurted out.

Marilyn considered his words not expecting them. It had been a few months since they began dating but it was a strong word and neither were easy one to open up.

"I love you too Klaus."

She remembered the time they first said their I love you's. She remembered the smiles, the giggles and dancing all night and crashing into her apartment or his at the crack of dawn. Marilyn stood up straight and wiped away her tears, getting out of her head.

"Any idea where I can find Elena?" She asked.

"I think Jeremy and Matt had a plan to drive away from the town. Escape before anything else happened." Elijah told her a little confused why she would ask her that question. When Elijah finally realised what must be going on through her mind, it was already too late. Before Elijah or Rebekah could tell her anything Marilyn had disappeared out of their line of view by flapping open her wings. Both shot their head up trying to follow with her speed but failed as she was gone before they could see anything.

She landed dramatically on the Wickery bridge. As per her assumption Matt Donovan's truck should be driving over to the bridge soon. Deciding on telling at least one person about it, she dialled Stefan's number.

"Hello Stefan." Her voice was low and venemous.

"Nyx. I am sorry for..."

"No. Don't apologise. You know what Nik wanted above all? He didn't want to run away. He didn't want his family to run yet again. I am going to respect his wish. Make it possible that they would never have to leave again. I will not let them suffer yet another run around the globe."

Stefan grew scared as he realised what it was that she hinted. "Marilyn please listen to me, don't do it."

"I asked for the same thing." She bawled her voice echoing through the mist of the night. "He was leaving town with me. We all were planning on doing just that until you misfit hypocritics ruined it. I want to watch you suffer like I am. See you around Stefan. If I were you, I'd call to bid adieu to the love of your life." She ended the call.

Her eyes were fixed on the road ahead waiting for the moment she would do what was right. A truck came into view speeding towards her. She saw Elena and Matt inside. She took notice of the auras radiating; Matt Donovan looked regretful of their lives while Elena was already grieving and impatient.

Marilyn tilted her head to a side watching as the truck got closer. Matt looked ahead just in time before he turned the steering wheel making the truck sever off the road crashing through the cement structure bordering the bridge and straight into the water. Marilyn put her hands behind her back before she casually walking upto the edge. She peered down to see the truck slowly sink under water. "Now it feels justice."

Stefan had already speeded in on the bridge breathing heavily. "Why did you do it?" He asked Marilyn.

She shrugged her shoulders showing no signs of remorse for it. "I wanted her and you to suffer." She told him before turning to face an angry Stefan. "She will die soon enough. You and your pathetic brother are miraculously alive and that's good. Yes, I want to watch the two of you live an immortal life in loss of the love of your lives."

"You are more evil than I thought." A single tear rolled down her cheek showing off her pain and grief she was holding onto.

"There's a fine line between evil and vengeful. I am vengeful Stefan. The kind of vengeful as you are if you are as in love as I am." Marilyn gave him one last glance before she walked away leaving Stefan to figure out how to save Elena by himself.
