Arabella Smith was seen as a lovely
young woman. After losing her mother at
a young age, she took over the role of the
woman in her household, helping to cook
and clean. After her mother's tragic death,
her father moved them to the town of Mystic
Falls in a desperate need of change. Her
father James wanted to
give the girl a mother figure after
losing her own so soon. He met a woman
named Cora, who immediately put
him in a spell.

The two wed, giving
Arabella not only a new mother, but
two step sisters; Lottie and Fannie.
Lottie and Arabella were very close
when Cora was not around. Fannie
was not a fan of Arabella,
believing the girl to be beneath her.
A few years after her father had wed Cora,
he sadly passed away as the result of
an animal attack. Arabella was devastated
but did not let her poor luck dampen
her soul. Cora immediately took
her rule in the household, inheriting
everything until Arabella was eighteen.
Cora made Arabella her personal maid,
working the girl day and night.

One day, the Smith family received an
invite to a ball being held at the Salvatore
residence, a highly respected family
within the town. Arabella was
forbid from attending, given a list
of chores to do instead. After her
stepmother and sisters had left,
Arabella felt determined to do
something for herself for once.
Going to her friend Clara's home,
her friend helped her to
quickly get ready for the ball.

When the two arrive, Arabella
almost immediately catches the eye of
Stefan Salvatore. The man greeted her,
making the girl swoon with his manners.
The two danced and connected over the
few hours they spent with one another.
Just before midnight, Arabella has to return
to her home, not wanting Cora to find her
blatantly disobeying her wishes. Stefan
attempts to stop her but fails to do so.
He is only given her name and something
she accidentally dropped,
her mother's wedding ring.

Stefan spends weeks looking
for the girl he fell for,
never having felt that
strongly for someone in his life.
Just when he is about to give up,
he finds himself at a large
estate on the outskirts of town,
finding the girl of his dreams
standing in rags with
bruises tattered across her
skin.
