Y/N's eyes snapped open.
His chest heaved up and down, his trembling eyes wide with a cocktail of emotions β Fear, anger, pain, resentment. He crawled from underneath the table, his fucked up neck and mangled leg doing little to help him push through the rubble. He spat out some blood from his busted lips, wiping the crimson from his nostrils with his thumb. He struggled to get up, but pushed through the pain with stubbornness and anger.
His eyes landed on Aiden, being clutched to Ashlyn's chest while the girl kept him close. Their eyes continued to tremble when they saw how Aiden's lips tugged to the side, his eyes widened and emptied, his mouth going agape like that of the Phantoms. Y/N nearly fell down to the ground, but as he was about to slam his back into rubble and concrete, he was awakened out of nowhere by a warming softness.
As Y/N sat up on the bed, coughing out loudly after the aching on his head subsided, glancing around the empty hospital room. His sweat dripped cold, his hands clutching at whatever things were shoved into his body and yanking them away β It's not as if he'd feel pain anyways. He tapped around for his cell phone, bringing it into his ear after recoiling from the massive light that lit nearly the entire room on full brightness.
As he pushed the door open, he was met with the eyes of a familiar blonde man. He looked down at his younger brother with a raised eyebrow. Y/N tried to speak, but the only thing that came from his mouth were gasps and heaves. Florentino remained standing with a confused glance, all until Y/N pushed him to the side, limping forward and towards the door, leaving the older brother confused, but still quite interested.
Florentino: ["... The fuck happened to yo-"]*
Y/N didn't answer immediately, instead, all he did was grab Florentino by his collar and push him to the wall. Eyes stuck to the floor, trembling with his knuckles turning white from how hard he was grasping him. Memories flooded his brain β From the earlier in the day when his cheek was kissed, all the way to seeing the state of Aiden. All Y/N did was hold back a hiccup and a half sob, staring up at his brother with fear.
Y/N: ["I need a ride..."]*
βββββββββββββββββββ·
Throughout the entire ride, Y/N was restless.
His feet bounced unquietly, he glanced around nonstop, he kept telling his brother to go faster and faster. Florentino didn't have a problem on doing 80 on a 50, but he was still glancing to the side at his brother changing from his hospital gown into some proper clothing, even if basic. The moment they stopped at Ashlyn's house, Y/N stepped out from the car, and immediately down onto a knee after the world spun.
Before Florentino could even reach his shoulder to try and calm him down, Y/N was already back on his feet and running. He came through the door like a SWAT raid, breathing out heavily while resting his hands on his knees, pushing through the stinging sensation that replaced the pain he would've otherwise felt. As he glared forward, his eyes rested on the recovering group that had been laying down before.
His eyes, once cold and apathetic, now softened with warmth and relief when he saw everyone sitting up and awakened. Particularly the blonde and the ginger, of who he approached and fell to his knees by the side of β Without a word, he brought both of them in for a hug. Ashlyn and Aiden both felt his shivers, the way he was trembling, and the sweat of his body didn't phase them as much as the horror in his words.
Y/N: ["You.. You died too, didn't you...?"]
Aiden didn't reply immediately, instead, his hands calmly moved up to meet Y/N's own, which calmly clutched at the side of his face. Tears swelling in his eyes that Aiden wiped away while moving away his gaze from Y/N, towards Ashlyn. The girl, too, appeared as confused, worried and afraid as everyone else, but seemed particularly disturbed at the sight of how Y/N expressed nothing short of extreme concern.
Aiden: ["Yeah, Ashlyn saw it too, but... It's fine now..."]
Elio: ["Sir, you should be recovering at the hospital, have you really come all this way?"] The scarred man spoke while approaching Y/N, who slowly unclutched himself from Aiden with a long-lasting sigh and a nod ["Shouldn't we get you back in there, sir?"]
Y/N: ["There is no need... All the damage done was back in the Phantom Dimension, I'm good enough here"] Y/N sighed while leaning back against the sofa, raising a hand ot his face with a groan ["Just a headache from all the adrenaline starting to die down..."]
Mike: ["You kids still got school tomorrow, so you better rest easy now"]
Tyler: ["That does bring the question of how we managed to come back before daylight"] He spoke up while glancing down, a pensive hand resting on his chin before a sigh escaped his lips ["But I guess that worrying about that now won't do us any good..."]
Ashlyn: [".... Yeah ... Let's-.. Let's try and get some rest"]
No one objected against the leader of the group, and everyone laid back down. Y/N excused himself to use the bathroom, but as the minutes ticked by, Ashlyn, who couldn't fall back asleep, saw that he didn't come back. Both confused and with nothing better to do other than lay down and keep repeating the same questions in her mind, the girl pushed away the covers and stood up, making her way upstairs.
There, sitting in the corridor by himself, staring at the wall with his trademark cold gaze was Y/N, who only moved to glance at her. The indifference and coldness once more shifted down into warmth and comfort when he saw her. The girl approached with a blanket still wrapped around her shoulders to shield herself from the cold, where she sat down by his side, turning to glance at the boy with her tired gaze.
Y/N: ["... I'm afraid..."]
Ashlyn: ["Me too... I thought I had lost you, and now Aiden, I-..."]
She fell silent as the two sat side-by-side and the words struggled to leave her mouth. Instead, all the girl could do was swallow her hiccups and cries. Y/N spared her a comforting glance, sliding himself closer to the girl, who didn't make an effort to move. The two sat side-by-side without words for a few moments longer, until Y/N broke through the quiet once more, speaking while still glancing away from her.
Y/N: ["You're not getting rid of me so easily"]
Ashlyn: ["I still hope not... You still owe me from the arcade bet"]
Y/N: ["Sorry, my family struggles a lot with cash. Could I pay monthly?"]
The two shared a small laughter at each other's jokes. Y/N glanced down still, not really looking at the girl until she approached him a tiny bit, opening her blanket and offering it to him, something which Y/N glanced at, and then up at her emerald eyes. All Ashlyn did was give a small, and shy nod, looking away from him as he crawled by her side, the two still a bit away from touching, but both sharing the same blanket.
Both remained silent and the only sound that took over the corridor was their accelerated heartbeat from fear. The confusion as to how and why they left the Phantom Dimension sooner than they were supposed to, if Aiden was truly alright, how he and Y/N would be when they awakened in the other world the next day. Their minds raced, and the first to break silence was Y/N, who let out a long, tired sigh.
Y/N: ["But I guess it isn't so bad..."] His words caught Ashlyn's attention, who glanced at him with curiosity ["I mean, it's how I met you all and-... ... I don't regret that... ..."]
Ashlyn: ["... I'm glad that I got to meet you all too, but I really wish it was under different circumstances"] The girl said, glancing between the small distance that kept their shoulders from touching ["I just wish I wasn't as afraid, as confused, as-... ..."]
Y/N: ["I know. I really do"]
The girl went quiet, as did Y/N, both glancing at the floor and away from one another, but sharing a specific thought together β "Damn, I really wish this wasn't so difficult". Y/N's mind raced with everything that had happened, and what else he wanted to tell Ashlyn, but alas, he couldn't. Everytime he tried to bring out the words, they would catch in his throat and his mind would force them down back to his heart.
Ashlyn's case wasn't so different as she looked all around the room, leaning into her own knees that she brought up to her chest, wrapping an arm around it. She would occasionally steal glances at Y/N, who's closed eyes and resting expression somewhat soothed her after seeing what had happened to him not too long ago. Still, she wondered if he shouldn't go back to the hospital instead of staying the night.
Y/N: ["Hey... If we make it through it all alive-"]
Ashlyn: ["WHEN we make it through it all alive"]
Y/N: ["Right... When we make it through it all alive... There is something I want to tell you"]
Ashlyn: ["Why not tell me right now, then?"]
Y/N: ["Truth be told, this scares me almost as much as the Phantom World"] He stifled a small, dry laugh, glancing away from the ginger ["Which is crazy to think about... Three little words that make my spine run cold, and make my entire body start shaking..."]
Ashlyn: ["... Well, then-... I mean, I-..."] She took a deep, deep breath, inhaling to fill her lungs and exhale, closing her eyes deep in thought for a few moments longer ["When we make it through all of this alive, then, I would like to tell you something as well..."]
Y/N: ["And you can't promise I won't like it?"]
Ashlyn: ["... ... ... ..."]
Y/N: ["Don't worry, it goes both ways"]
There was a slight hint of apprehension in his usually-cold eyes. But instead of anger or being mad, all Ashlyn saw was understanding. It made her let out a breath she didn't know she was holding, and repay in an equal amount of understanding. Her emerald eyes met Y/N's, who gave her the slightest hint of a smile. A sight once rare, but one that Ashlyn was glad she could now experience β She felt she earned it.
She felt as if she needed just-as-much courage as when she and the group went back to the house to take the car. The same night Y/N stood behind to hold out the Phantoms as much as he could, the same night where she began to feel the warmth in her chest. Still, she swallowed her fear and decided to act, pushing away the thoughts of what could potentially go wrong away and far from her mindscape.
Y/N's eyes widened and his body stiffened for a moment, but it was quick to relax down as he glanced to the side, noting the girl softly laying her cheek against his shoulder. Though he was hesitant at first, he decided to swallow his fear and move, sneaking his arm around the girl and holding her closer. Ashlyn recoiled at first, but soon relaxed against the warmth of his touch that found its way around her body.
The two shared one final glance of understanding and agreement that they should let the night behind, and comfortably snuggled up to one another. Ashlyn's head on Y/N's shoulder, and his gently laying against the wall β It's not as if the soreness would hurt him anyways. It didn't take long for the night to settle in, and the two to fall asleep side-by-side, slowly adapting to one another's breathing pattern as well.
βββββββββββββββββββ·
Seeing Ashlyn stretch was an interesting sigh, to say the least.
Y/N recalled all that time back when they first got to Savannah and got out of the bus, where Ashlyn seemed to crack her entire skeleton with a few movements, and this time, it was no different. After being done with rolling her shoulders to loosen their stiffness, she glanced down at Y/N, who looked at her with half-lidded, lazy morning eyes, and only properly stood up when the girl offered her hand to help him up.
The morning routine in a house with 7 teenagers and their parents wasn't easy, nor quick, but they got it done. Coming out of the bathroom, Y/N had changed into a proper pair of clothing that Elio had brought over. And so, breakfast eaten as courtesy of some of the parents and teeth brushed, Y/N sat down in the living room with the butler by his side, and his brother across from them, listening to the commotion.
Florentino: ["So, I got you checked out β Forged a few documents here, bribed some people there... You know the drill"] He put down a few documents on top of the table, mostly medical clearance regarding Y/N ["Your wounds aren't very concerning anyways, so you should be good just resting at home with Elio being the one taking care of you"]*
Y/N: ["... Why are you doing this?"]*
Florentino: ["Let's just say that I have a hunch, and if said hunch is correct I'll be one step closer to a goal of mine"] His predatory smirk made Y/N feel as if he was being choked, thumbs pressed to his windpipe ["And think of it as a vote of confidence. You help me, I help you, one hand washes the other... The three of us hate the same man, after all~..."]*
Y/N said nothing as he stared at his brother, clicking his tongue at his antics and seeing his carefree attitude. From planning of how things were going to go down, to accidents such as Logan's glasses having been stepped on, Y/N listened to the conversation of the group. Putting himself up to walk towards the door alongside his butler, stopping only when he felt a strange numbness run down his entire body.
He looked back at Ashlyn, who was being hugged by her mother. The girl glanced at Aiden and Ben in the sofa, both being comforted by their parents thanks to what transpired in the night before. The sight of Aiden being crushed underneath the rubble sent a shiver down Y/N's spine, one that he clenched his teeth and bounced his feet at, trying to rid himself off it. Walking down towards the car, he and Elio awaited.
Elio: ["Since he is still recovering, I'll take Y/N home while you all are at school"] The man comments with a smile as Logan, Taylor, Tyler and Ben approached ["Thanks to master Florentino's quick thinking, we already delivered his medical papers to school, so everything should be in order"] He opened the door for Y/N, who only crawled in after a shared nod with Ashlyn ["After everything is said and done, we'll rendezvous in either of the houses"]
Ashlyn: ["Sure, sounds good"]
With this, Y/N crawled into the car and sighed when Elio drove off, letting his head rest against the palm of his hand. He looked up at the ceiling, finding himself losing himself in thought... It had been a while since he could think in some silence in this way. Savannah seemed like it had happened so long away as opposed to a couple of months β Now that he thought about it properly, such a faraway thing felt like years.
The night everything went to shit, he pulled a gun out of his bag, surprising everyone... He let out a small laugh at his antics back then. So lonely. So quiet. So... Edgy. It had really been a while that he let himself go, huh? Approaching others, forming bonds, friendships, even going as far as to fall in love. He'd be disgusted at himself now two years ago, much like he is disgusted with his old self at this moment.
He even quit smoking! That was one trip and a half... Though he still finds himself patting his pockets something, as if looking for a pack of cigarettes. Force of habit, he guessed. From so much, to the feelings that he held for those two β It surely made him feel strange. A sort of warmth in his chest that tightened around with fear of what could happen if anything were to go wrong with him, or them, at any given time.
Especially nowadays, they thread the fine line of life and death every single night in that other world. Thinking about what happened to Aiden again made Y/N's body shake. Thinking back about what happened to him made a chill run down his spine. The feeling of his neck being broken, even if barely hurting thanks to his condition, was scary. He just hoped that he could one day tell those two how much he-
Elio: ["Do not fret, young master, but we are being followed"]
Y/N: ["... Is it father's or Florentino's?"]
Y/N looked at the rearview mirror with a quick glance β The butler's words carried some truth. There was a black SUV not too far away from them, which took the same turn that Elio did. It appeared to be trying to keep a low profile, at least at first. The scarred man in the wheel said nothing as Y/N reached into the glovebox, pulling his Brixia 1911, and loading a magazine into it, keeping his finger far from the trigger.
Elio: ["Doesn't seem like it. It has license plates"]
Y/N: ["Could be false..."]
Elio: ["Sure, but we both know that isn't the style of either of them"]
Y/N had to agree, as much as the situation made a knot in his stomach. Killing Phantoms was something, but shooting at humans was entirely different; even in this case. Then, another thought crossed his mind, one that made his skin go pale with fear β If he was being followed, what about the others? He looked at the mirror again as Elio began to speed up, and the SUV still came running while still following them.
Y/N: ["... I don't wanna shoot people, Elio. If I do, then-"]
The man said nothing as he landed a resting hand on Y/N's shoulder. He offered him a warm smile, one that appeared almost fatherly. Y/N said nothing, and neither did Elio while the older one of the two glanced at the younger. A firm nod is all that the butler offered him, taking his eyes away from the road for a moment. A pat on Y/N's shoulder, he returned his eyes to the street, prompting Y/N to nod with an exhale.
Y/N: ["Alright, alright... I-... I'll try and contact the others"]
Elio: ["You do that while I take care of our problem..."] The man sped up even further, creating some distance between him and the people following them ["Do try and talk to master Florentino. See if he knows anything; though I personally have my doubts about it"]
Y/N merely nodded as Elio came to a stop a few seconds later, opening the door of the car and reaching underneath the seat for something. Y/N looked away as he heard the click of a gun being readied, and hid in the backseat, lowering his head while pulling out his cellphone. The knot in his stomach became tighter when he tapped to call Ashlyn, putting the thing to his ear and letting out a sigh when she picked up.
Y/N: ["Ashlyn, be careful, Elio and I are-"]
His heart dropped when the girl screamed alongside muffled would-be screams from the rest of the group. Y/N peeked his eyes over the seat where he laid on, watching Elio take aim against the car that followed them and stopped not too far away. Y/N called for the girl, but only heard the call go silent as she hung up. Letting out another scream for the girl's name, he recoiled at the sound of bullets being fired close by.
He flinched with the loud sound, repeatedly smashing the call button that went unanswered every single time. The desperation began to caught up and tears swelled in his eyes while he slammed his fist against the seat that he laid on. Again, and again and again trying to reach the girl that seemed to get farther and farther away with every time he pressed the button, all while bullets were being shot in the outside.
Silent came after pouring water from the rain that seemed to dramatically aim for Y/N. From Ashlyn to Aiden, to Tyler, to Ben, to Logan and Taylor, no one picked up, making the pit in his stomach sink deeper and deeper with each failed attempt to reach the group. Finally, his finger hovered over the button that had messages only coming, but never replied β The look of Florentino in his profile picture made Y/N red with anger.
Nothing.
He tossed the phone to the other side of the car and kicked open the door while letting his anger and his desperation kick over. Gun in hand he aimed it forward the moment he stepped out, feeling the droplets of water falling down against his body like a storm of pebbles. His eyes dropped in surprise at the sight of Elio standing in the middle of a group of people that could easily be mistaken for people that had passed out.
That is, save for the pool of blood forming underneath them. The butler seemed mostly unharmed, save for his arm that had been shot through, much like his shoulder. Still, he glanced over his shoulder while resting the FAL aimed down at the ground, offering a smile at Y/N, one that made the knot in his stomach feel a little less tight. The butler looked around himself for a moment, then at one of the bodies.
Elio: ["Seems like they were out for blood, sir..."] The man comments while turning to look at Y/N once again ["And what about the others and master Florentino?"
Y/N: ["Nothing... No one from the group, nor Florentino are picking up"] He replied, approaching the bodies and prompting Florentino to hum with concern ["We should try and identify whoever these people are. See who would send them after-"]
Elio stopped as Y/N reached for the body, placing a gentle hand in his shoulder. A smile on his face he offered the boy a small handkerchief, prompting Y/N to softly "oh" at him and pick it up with an appreciative nod. He carefully used it to cover his fingers and not let them touch whatever part of the body from the man. They wore bullet proof vests, none of which had been damaged during the firefight just now.
Y/N: ["As usual, he is scarily accurate..."]
Setting aside the sight of the shots against the head and necks of the people, Y/N picked through their pockets, only to find nothing. The car was the same, prompting Y/N to click his tongue in anger once again. He looked at the steps approaching and saw Elio finishing the bandage around the wounds he had suffered approaching. He also took a peek inside the car, but rapidly and softly laid a hand on Y/N's shoulder.
Elio: ["Come, sir, let's get you out of this rain before more of then show up..."] He guided Y/N back to the car, offering him a small grin ["Or worse, you end up catching a cold"]
Y/N was too afraid to reciprocate his joke. Instead, as he crawled into the back seat, feeling the exhaustion set in as the adrenaline died down, he sighed and sunk into the backseat of the car with a tired sigh. He unloaded the gun, putting the magazine aside and leaning back, picking up his cellphone β His eyes went wide. There was a message by Florentino that he opened to rapidly see what his brother had said.
Instead of words, there was a picture, one of a bloodied room with various bodies laying around in all various states of damage. Y/N could only guess that they targeted him as well, but said nothing as he typed a message asking if Florentino had been followed around during the day, to which the older brother replied with what made Y/N's stomach feel sick again, followed by a location for them to meet up on...
Y/N: ["Elio... Take us back to the graveyard"]
βββββββββββββββββββ·
Y/N was the one to make his way out first.
Not minding the rain any longer, and just pushing away the hair from his face with a huff. He walked into the graveyard he grew so used to and could navigate upside down with his eyes veiled. Not standing too far from the center was Florentino, using a knife to remove the bullets that had lodged into his body caressly, showing off the same condition that his younger brother had been afflicted with, just much stronger.
He glanced up at Y/N approaching, only offering a smirk that wasn't reciprocated. As Y/N stopped in front of Florentino, sitting down on one of the chairs that the parents had pulled to the center of the graveyard during the night everything began to go to shit. Thinking about it made the muscles in Y/N's neck throb, but he pushed aside the feeling. Instead, without taking his eyes off from his brother, he drew breath to speak.
Florentino: ["I know who attacked us-"] But he was beaten to it by the blonde ["Or, to be precise, I know who sent them, and why they sent them... After the others too, for sure"] Y/N looked at him, the lack of patience practically oozing from his widened eyes ["A man by the name of Maverick. I knew about him, and he knew about me, but we always stayed each in our own lanes when it came down to the topic about the Phantom World"]
Y/N: ["So you do know about it..."]
Florentino: ["The entire family does, dipshit. How do you think our father manages to run the biggest crime syndicate in Europe? As did his father, and his father before that?"] Florentino spat out with a smirk, watching as his brother's eyes narrowed, trying to make sense of what he just heard ["Think about it, you know the rules β If something moves in the Phantom World, then it won't be moved in real life until much further away"]
Y/N: ["Place a bunch of products into a massive cargo and drive it to wherever you want during the night without bother... But even then, the amount of Phantoms, and those centipede things!"] Y/N spat back, his eyes widening as the realization began to set in, his irises focusing solemnly on Florentino ["That would require so many people and-"]
Florentino: ["Fire power? Well, good thing we have access to so many guns, right? As for the manpower... Father and his fathers were a lot more "attuned" to the Phantom World than us"] He crossed his arm with a tired sigh as Y/N pulled a seat in front of him, both still under the rain, not seeming to mind it ["They were able to open a rift wherever and whenever β It was something that they were born with and had from the get-go"]
Y/N: ["The rift that got us was from the Sorrel Weed House all the way in Savannah... And it got every single person of the group"] He looked at the group again with eyes narrowed in confusion, darting back and forth across the dirt of the ground ["But-... What about everyone?! If you know who took then, do you know where they could've taken them?!"]
Florentino: ["I got a pretty good hunch... But that'd be dangerous, even for the three of us. Let's take it step by step"] He stood up and looked at the sky for a moment, feeling the droplets stain his shirt and face with a long-lasting exhale ["You never even knew about the Phantom World until recently, yeah? That's why we were always cast out, you know"]
Y/N: ["So... You didn't know about it either?"]
Florentino: ["I did. Been there once or twice, but that's about it. It seems like that with every generation the power gets weaker and weaker. Dad is the only person in the family that can waltz in and out whenever"] Both hands in the pockets of his pants, he glanced at his brother still. Eyes remaining indifferent ["And ever since mom suffered the accident..."]
Y/N: ["She forgot how to open the Rifts..."] Y/N concluded with his eyes growing wider... And then softening with a tired sigh ["Fine, fine, ok, I got it. But about the others, we-"]
Florentino: ["Need to rest and come up with a plan because we are going to go up against the government"] He interrupted Y/N again, walking past him and standing by the side of Florentino ["Go home. Take a warm shower and rest until the night comes, and then-"]
Y/N: ["... If the others were taken then I am entirely alone at the school grounds"] It was now Y/N's turn to interrupt, his eyes growing colder and more calculative ["Even worse is that the entire place is surrounded by Phantoms and those giant centipede things...."]
Florentino: ["I'll drop a supply of weaponry there, then. They'll no doubts try and track you down, so go stay at my place here in the city, I'll send you the address, it should be safe there"] He tapped his brother's shoulder while glancing at him, then turning to look at Elio, who gave him a firm nod ["I'll give you the details of the plan soon. And, friendly advice β You don't need to eat and sleep in the Phantom World, but you really should"]
Y/N: ["And... Why is that?"]
Florentino: ["Your condition there depends on your conditions as if you would treat yourself. So finding a proper place to rest and have something to eat will mean you'll have a speedier recovery"] He tapped Y/N's shoulder again before starting to walk away with both hands in the pockets of his pants ["I'll also drop off something to help you sleep, since I know for a fact you won't be able to properly rest while being so worried sick like that"]
He stepped away and out the gates of the graveyard, leaving Y/N alone with Elio. The younger one glanced up at the raining skies, feeling the droplets of water hit his face. His mind raced to process everything he just heard β His family knew about this thing the entire time. The reason why he had been cast away for so long was because of it. But, strangely enough, he felt as if all the previous years of his life didn't matter.
Now his worry focused back on the group. Tyler, Taylor, Ben, Logan, Ashlyn and Aiden... Those last two especially. He recalled how they had come together to help him. How they saved him from certain death, both by his own hands and the vines that had broken his neck not too long ago. He looked at the cloudy skies with one last inhale, letting out the air from his lungs while he retold himself everything once again.
Elio: ["Young master, we really need to go"] The butler chimed in, resting a soft and caring hand against Y/N's shoulder ["It's really not safe in such an open space"]
Y/N: ["That's fine. That's fine..."]
Y/N huffed while walking out, following the man. He stopped one last time before entering their car to look at the graveyard of old busses. His eyes narrowed, thinking back to the months that they spent there. In fear. Reclusive. Too afraid to step out, so much so that simply going from the yard to the school was the night where he almost died. Y/N looked at his hand, a small smirk playing on his lips β That's right. Death...
He was no stranger to it, nor to fear.
And neither were the others. They would be fine. He knew it.
Y/N: ["You all saved me before... It's time for me to repay the favor"]
