Ten books had sold by now. For the most part, it was doing good. Harvest began to think of a sequel in her head, planning on making the love struck teen in the first one turn out to be a monster all along. People would be shocked, taken back by that unexpected plot twist. They'd hate him, they should hate him. Or maybe they'd excuse his actions and romanticize toxic behavior, using the excuse they thought he was cool and had a good personality. As if they all wouldn't hate his guts if he was ugly.
Yeah, that's how it would go. Writing a sequel was a terrible idea, and she wished she'd never even began to strike the idea in the first place.
"You wanna hot chocolate?" Logan asked her a second later. "With baby marshmallows?"
Harvest looked to the large crowd. "Do you think you should go in there?"
Logan looked out, and he wasn't even sure he could handle this many people so quickly. "I should be okay."
She gave an uneasy look before fishing into the small bag she brought, pulling out a whistle. "Whistle if you need me to come save you."
Logan gave a half smile as he took it. "I notice you save me a little too much."
She gave a minor, barley there, smile with a shrug. "Guess i'm just good at it."
Logan gave a final smile. "I'll be back, with a hot chocolate, with baby marshmallows, and sprinkled candycan. I'll also write your big three on the side so i'll know it's yours."
"I forgot what mine were." she said honestly.
Logan huffed as he rose his hands in disbelief. "How many times have I told you? Sagittarius sun, Gemini Moon, and Capricorn rising."
He'd known all of their big threes. All except Gabe, who always said he did not believe in that sort of thing and refused to tell him his birthday. Another clue she completely missed.
"Never thought he'd leave." a new voice rung, causing her to drop the book in hand, having it fall to the ground. A familiar voice, a terrifying voice, one that made her want to run and hide, cry and scream.
"Gabe." Harvest spoke as she turned around to him. What to say? What to do? How to act? It all was a blur, frozen in place and looking at him.
"Sorry, I didn't mean to scare you." he gave her a minor grin of apologizes, picking up her book and handing of back to her. "You feeling any better?"
It took a second for her to remember the excuse for her crying the night before. "Oh, yeah, yeah. I think the cake had some type of pumpkin in it and I was having an allergic reaction maybe. I don't know. But i'm better now."
"Well, at least I know I'm not the only one that nearly killed you with pumpkin." he joked, and she was suppose to laugh, but it wasn't a joke now. He had tried to kill her before, whose to say the pumpkin latte wasn't part of the plan the entire time. She didn't know, how could she? She didn't know what was real and what wasn't. "So, um, is Duncan doing any better? You never texted me."
"Oh." she spoke, remembering Tyler had told her he lied to Gabe and said the key didn't work. "No, no, there isn't anything really new. He's still just home, in bed, like he was."
"Maybe it's just gonna take some time." he gave a sentimental nod, reaching over for her. The redhead held her breath, hoping he wouldn't touch her anymore then just a hand in the arm.
"So, how's Winterfest going?" she cut in before he had the chance, moving aside and walking toward one of the book shelves, fixing one along the wall even though it didn't need it.
"I just thought I would just come and keep you company." he explained with a shrug, turning to her as she did the same, this time keeping a distance. "Didn't know Logan would be here."
"Well, his dads are paying for the tent and a lot of people around town know him, so he'd attract new buyers." Harvest lied. Only partly lied, they were paying for it, but she didn't just want him here for new buyers. Lying. Lied. She remembered the night of the dorm party, when she was honest with Gabe and said she didn't want them to lie to each other. How stupid could she be? She'd lied, but she confessed and didn't do it again. He lied about every single thing. Yet, she was the one having to apologize, she was the one he gaslit, he was the one to lie.
"Maybe get you to sign one of these." he gave a joking grin and took one of the books off the shelf.
"You finally decided you wanna read it?" she asked. Because he never did before, never wanted to, always shot her down, even when the very first copy she made, she tried to give to him.
"Maybe it'll make me enjoy reading." he said back with a half grin. That was always his excuse, he hated reading, so he wouldn't read his girlfriends book. "You have to make it out to your boyfriend though, not Gabe."
Not Gabe. Of course not Gabe, because you weren't Gabe. You were Dodge.
She took the pin as he flipped the first page open, going to press her hand down onto the paper. A wavy line was drawn from her shaking hands, she hadn't even recognized it until she saw it when she pulled her hand back. She pressed the pen hard to the paper, signing her name quickly and making it out my boyfriend. My boyfriend. My first boyfriend. My only boyfriend. A liar. A demon. A manipulator. A fake. My first boyfriend. My only boyfriend.
"I was wondering." Gabe spoke up as she shut the book tightly. "You know, is there a chance that maybe you guys used it wrong?"
"How could we use a key wrong?" she asked him.
"I mean, it's just weird that it worked on your dad and Erin and Ellie, but not Duncan?" he continued on, acting as though he was curious.
She pushed the book into his hands and walked away, making it seem like she'd been putting the pen away. "I guess it's possible."
She didn't wanna turn back around and look at him, that was the last thing she wanted to do.
"So what are you gonna do if he doesn't get better?" Gabe asked her, staring at her back. She could feel his stare, she'd felt it before. Like all the times he'd stay awake after she fell asleep, watching her dream away. "Is there something else you can do?"
"How would I know?" she snapped suddenly, turning around. "Can we just not talk about it? I don't know, okay?"
He frowned his eyebrows, standing up to stand infront of her. "I know this is difficult, Harvey. Okay, I know it's a family thing. But i'm always gonna be here for you. I just hope that you know that."
Would he be? Or was he just close to destroy her? To get what he wanted? Was there a part of him that loved her? No. How could there be? He tried to kill her. You don't kill people you love. He didn't love her. He wanted to own her.
She gave a nod, looking away a second. "Thanks."
"Could I get a copy?" a man asked from before the tent.
"Sure, one second." she gave her best customer service voice before facing Gabe. "I'll see you later. I gotta get to work."
"Why don't I stick around? Help you-" Gabe began before a burning liquid hit his face. He winced, stumbling back and whipping his eyes. Harvest gapped as she looked over, seeing Logan with two, now empty, cups of hot coco. He took off in a sprint before Gabe had the chance to whip his eyes and see him.
"Here." she spoke, handing him a paper towel from the table. "They ran by so fast, I didn't even see them."
"That's crazy." Gabe said, blinking in pain while taking the napkin to whip his eyes. "So, how about I stay and help you?"
Even two burning drinks to the face wasn't gonna make him leave.
She passed him, giving the man the book and taking his money. He wanted her to sign it as well, scribbling her name on the inside before giving it back to him with a smile. "Thank you."
She turned back around, pausing and seeing Gabe was no longer there. Her heart raced, looking around for any sight of him. Before she had the chance to react, the familiar sound of a whistle blew through the air. The same whistle she'd given Logan if he needed her to save him. It only blew twice. Just twice.
Her heart nearly stopped, dropping her book into the snow before taking off from the tent. She found Kinsey first, working at the face painting station. The older Locke saw the panic on her face. "What happened?"
"I think Gabe took Logan." she spoke quickly and in fear. "I gave him a whistle to blow if something happened. I heard it. Just twice."
"You're sure it was Gabe?" Kinsey asked her quickly.
"He insisted on staying with me all night long and then just left without saying anything. Then I heard the whistle." the redhead ranted on, trying to get everything she meant out all at once while looking around at the same time.
"Guys, Bodes not picking up." Tyler hurried over to his sisters. "I called him three times and it just kept ringing."
"He put those tracking things on our phones." Kinsey nodded quickly. Tyler hurried to find the app, scrolling and hitting his name.
"It says he's on the south side of campus near the baseball diamond." the oldest Locke read from his phone.
"That's where the maze is." Kinsey looked at him.
"Where would you take someone to hurt them in a carnival where everyone was?" Harvest gave a questionable, worried look at the pair.
"You think Gabe could have taken Logan there?" Kinsey looked her way. "That means Bode isn't far."
"Logan's missing?" Tyler gave an insane expression. "Let's go look for them."
The trio hurried off quickly, pushing through crowds of people and going toward the maze as quick as they could. Dough let them in rather quickly, the three staying close but spreading out to call out their brother and Logan's name.
"Harvey!" Logan's voice echoed through the air. Her eyes widened, turning in the direction it was coming from. Tyler followed her quickly, but he wasn't as fast as she was. She'd gotten lost in the maze, leaving him behind in search of her friend.
"Logan!" the redhead shouted into the air.
"Carful." a new voice rung, making her turn quickly. At the end of one of the maze dead ends, Eden stood with her hands tightly around Logan's neck, holding him tightly. "I'm a lot stronger now. One little twist and you can say goodbye."
Harvest made eye contact with Logan, a cut on his cheek but seemed fine. His face was getting a little purple, Eden's grip around his head and neck a lot tighter then it seems. Harvest looked at Eden. "Eden. You don't have to do this, okay? I can help you."
She laughed. "Help me? You wanna help me? How, exactly? What could you possibly give me that I don't already have?"
Despite it all, Harvest could sense familiarity from Eden. She could senses the same thing she was feeling.
"I know he's promised you thing, lied to you." she went on, standing in the snow and keeping her eyes locked with Eden's. "He's told me things too. He's lied and promised me stuff too."
Eden stared at her.
"That's what he does. He hurts people and he gets close just to use them." Harvest went on, one hand out reaching slowly to show she meant no harm. "He's a manipulator. He did it to me, to you, to everyone he comes in contact with. You know that just as much as I do. Do you really think you deserve this? To suffer under his orders? Become something for him to own and control instead of your own person?"
Eden didn't say anything. Gabe was mean to her, all the time. Despite him giving her this, the good part of being a demon, he'd never once treated her good though. Her grip loosened on Logan some, making him gasp for air. The boy stepped forward some to get away before she snapped back to reality, realized who she was talking to, who had a hold of her. "No!"
Before she had a tight enough grip on him again, Harvest tackled her into the snow.
She fought against the demon, trying to keep her pinned down. Eden's nails dug into the redheads face, causing a harsh and sudden shot of pain to hit her. Logan hurried over, getting before Eden's head and grabbed her arms to keep away from the Locke. Harvest slapped a hand over Eden's mouth tightly, leaning in really close to her. "If you tell him anything about this, if you tell him that I know anything, I'll make sure you don't get away next time."
Eden fought against the pair. Logan's hands gripped her arms tightly while Harvest kept a tight hand over her mouth. The redhead lowered her eyes, staring at her. "Why don't you ask Gabe how fun it is to be locked away in a well for years? Hum? Do you want that? Because I can promise you, demon or not, I can make it happen."
Eden didn't fight anymore. Harvest let her mouth go while Logan dropped her arms, standing up. The Locke girl stayed straddling her a moment, staring into her eyes. "Don't make me regret not letting you go. Unlike you, I don't fantasize about killing people."
And she let her go, knowing that her threat on the well house, and showing Eden that the pair of them combined were stronger then her, that she wouldn't speak a word to Gabe about her knowing who he really was.
