๐๐๐. The only thing her parents had ever given her, no surname or family heirloom but the gift of a name that meant beloved. How loved she felt when she was left out to starve as a child in a place where rats were born.
๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐ raided her home and stole her mother and father away from her, they nearly got Mai too but her parents put up that great a fight she managed to slip away. She ran until her bare feet became bloodied with the broken glass splintering her soft skin.
๐๐๐๐๐๐ had been the one to find her as she was on her way to The Last Drop and heard her shivering from under the stairwell. Mai clung to the pink haired girl as she piggy back carried her back to Vander and the others. The two grew closer than friends, they were soul bonded, wherever one went the other would surely follow even if it meant hurting them. Mai was only a child but Vander had said that she had the most loyalty than any young girl he had ever met.
๐๐๐๐ had passed and their family had grew but there was always a hidden curiosity between Powder and Mai. They were around the same age and adored a good prank on Violet but primarily Mylo was on the receiving end.
๐๐๐๐๐๐ a mission of theirs goes South and alerts the attention of Piltover, the Enforcers and possibly the worst man alive. Silco. However, if there's one thing Mai hates more than anything it's evil mobsters taking advantage of innocents and Enforcers.

๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐. Left like a tied up dog on the side of the road, abandoned and deserted all becauseย they left dangerous weapons in the hands of a child. ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐. Crushed underneath rubble and left to rot with no burial, no memorial or image of them. ๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐. She had been taken by Silco after believing that the remnants of her family hated her guts and were eventually killed off by Enforcers.
๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐ ๐๐๐๐ ๐๐ ๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐. Whilst she endured the pain of losing her family and being isolated from her home Mia did what she knew best. She ran. Though, that did not mean she didn't receive her fair share of battle scars and she had many. The flames from the fire had scorched her skin so painful she still had nightmares about the pain. From the left side of her neck to underneath her ear and ending around the length of her shoulder but just nicking the top of her ribs she thought they were hideous. Mai developed a habit for fighting and eventually she started to fight for a price until she had made a name for herself down in the pits.
๐๐๐๐๐๐. Given to her out of respect for being the most fearsome pit fighter the Undercity had ever seen. That and the fact that she could make you see your own bones with a slice of her knives she had crafted herself out of an old pair of Vander's fighting gloves. Upon her growing fame whispers of her started to travel and eventually the raging Crime Boss decided he wanted the woman for his own private army. So, he sent his daughter after her and ordered her to bring Marrow back to him, to The Last Drop.
๐๐๐ dragged her feet with the hood of her cloak pulled up and leaving only a black shadow as her face. Her knives were hidden under her sleeves with her boots hitting the concrete creating an echo down the dimly lit alleyway.
A soft ruckus made her ears twitch and tense her muscles tightly as the leather fabric of her shirt pressed against her forearms. A loud clang made her stop as a bomb looking object was hurled to her feet with brightly coloured stripes and teeth as its make.
Mai didn't move and instead waited until a bang went off and bright pink smoke erupted in her face, a cough left her lips as she simply inhaled the fumes. A loud grunt left her as she was roughly barged into the side wall but with slickness she pushed off her own two feet and propelled herself behind the large assailant with a metal arm.
Her eyes widened slightly as the dark woman turned round, "Sevika?" She murmured but she only looked at her with narrowed eyes, her hood was still up and covered her features.
Sevika balled up both of her fists and charged at the girl like the angry bull she was, Mai ducked and swiped before bringing forth one of her knives. She managed to jump on to the back of her and brought her knife through the crevice of the metal slicing the wiring down like butter.
The right hand woman of Silco roughly reached behind her and threw her off into a trash can. Her back dented the metal but Mai quickly stood and held both of her knives.
Jinx lazily leant against a stairwell of a fire escape and watched in satisfaction as Sevika was getting made a show of. The woman looked up at Jinx with a gesture to come down but the blue haired girl simply did a mocking wave.
Though, as the two roughly attacked one another and this Marrow chick left nicks all over Sevika's large form her eyes twinkled. There was something about her that was achingly familiar and Jinx was just itching for her to take off her hood.
Sevika shouted loudly and backhanded Mai
till the back of her head hit the wall and she felt herself slipping away into darkness. She gritted her teeth and dug her knives into the ground to help her stand but Sevika had quickly wrapped a hand round her throat and pushed her further into the wall.
"Crafty little bastard, aren't you?" Sevika smirked to herself as she held the girl in place but it soon fell as her head tilted into the street light. "Impossible."
Her hood didn't fall off but the light hit her featured and Sevika had never been able to put a name on a face so easily. It was Vander's kid, the one who she taught to talk up a girl and make her first proper drink, she thought she died.
"Mai?" She whispered out and quickly dropped her hold on the girl though she fell limp on the floor, unconscious.
"Watcha got there?" Sevika heard Jinx's eerie voice and saw the crooked smile she had on her face.
Quickly, she reached for the bag and shoved it over Mai's head, "we need to get back." Sevika gruffly said, her shoulder roots ring quickly as she feared her metallic arm in a circle and pushed it back in. She picked up the girl in her arms and threw her over her shoulder, Jinx's patronising eyes following her.
She huffed loudly at the woman's grouchy attitude before she caught sight of two shiny objects in the ground. Jinx crouched down and pulled them out before inspecting them with a quizzical gaze, she noticed the lingering remnants of Sevika's blood on the tips.
"Hmm," Jinx mused to herself before she pocketed the knives and wandered off after the trail Sevika left.
๐๐๐๐๐ rubbed harshly against Mai'sย wrists as she fidgeted uncomfortably in the chair, faint beams of light hitting her eyes through the fabric over her head.
Her ears buzzed and body felt numb, nothing different from the mornings she'd wake up to after a nasty night.
"Glad you could make it," a velvet voice cancelled out the buzz in her ears and the bag was pulled from her head. "Mai."
She grunted and tugged at the restraints some more as she barred her teeth to the slippery man who sat cross legged in his seat. "Silco," she hissed out with spit pouring from her lips as his name tasted like venom.
"The girl who arose from the dead," he mockingly looked to the side with his fingers on his chin. "And even managed to make a name for herself, Marrow."
He tested her name and she snarled at how it came from his mouth, "do not speak my name, you are undeserving of it."
Silco squinted his eyes as he rested his elbows on the desk, "Marrow," he elongated her name to frustrate her. "I have heard of your violent nature and I require you to become a member of my close guard, immediately." His tone was no longer light hearted but dark and left almost no room for argument, almost.
Mai barked a laugh, "you might as well shoot me where I sit because I'd rather die than become one of your little bitches on a pay roll." She jerked her head to meet Sevika's eye line as she took several puffs of her spliff and clenched her jaw at the name she called her.
Silco leant farther forwards on his desk, "perhaps you'll change your mind when you see." He paused as if not knowing what to call something, "an old friend."
Sevika stood up and Mai gritted her teeth as she hauled her up by her arms and dragged her further down the underground.
"What have you done with my knives?" She glared at the woman who said nothing but kept her eyes low and facing forwards. Mia kissed her teeth and rolled her eyes before yelling as she was thrown onto the floor and the metallic door shut behind them. "Coward!"
Her voice echoed and she looked around with furrowed brows as she saw where she was. It was a large cave that seemed to have a bottomless end with a long propellor and a tent set up at the edge. Several designs that made no sense but were erupting in colours of blues, pinks and greens were spread across the room.
A clank made her spin round though her hands were still bound behind her back and she had no weapons. "Who's there?"
More rustling of fabric and an arm came to wrap around her neck to place her in a half headlock whilst her other hand held a gun to her temple. A sharp gasp left Mai as she felt the cold through the thin sheet of the hood around her head.
"The names Jinx, toots." Her voice was slightly scratchy and rough, "you're the one that Sevika brought in last night." The arm around her throat tightened some more and Mai groaned lightly as she tugged on the restraints some more behind her back.
Mai nodded and in a few seconds Jinx pushed herself off the girl with her gun now hanging by her side. "Who are you?"
She went to reach forwards and pull the hood down but Mai took a quick step backwards and Jinx arched a brow. As she took another she took one more back, "don't test me."
Jinx cocked her gun but Mai was unrelenting as she lowered her hood even more and took another step back in the darkness. "Fine," she sighed and walked off further into the depths of the cave, "leave then, you're no fun."
Her eyes darted for the door and it didn't take her more than a few seconds before she barged it open with all her might and shut it behind her. Mai used a sharp piece of shrapnel to cut her bindings before she sprinted up the stairs, through the bodies of men and women and into a back exit.
She managed to catch her breath for a mere moment before a body propelled her to the ground and landed on her front.
Mai turned round fast but held her hands up with a grimace as Jinx's gun was pointed at her face whilst she tutted. "Ah, ah," she wagged her finger before bending down and reaching for the hood.
Jinx pulled the hood back and openly stared at the girl who was pinned underneath her whilst Mai looked at her with confusion and blankness.
"Mai?"
She furrowed her brows, "how do you know my name?"
The girl stood up and took several steps back with her hands covering her ears as she began to mutter to herself. "No- no you didn't see her after the explosion! You murdered her. She's dead, this isn't real." Jinx began to panic and she breathed in short and curt intervals until she sunk to her knees until her whole body shook from her breaths. "If she's real then- then Vi- No!"
Mai was fully prepared to bolt from the scene and she had already began to stand and take two big steps away when she uttered a girls name, Vi. Her own eyes widened drastically and as she took in the girls blue hair Mia felt her heart stop.
From the tattoos, to the right fitted clothing and long braids that fell behind her heels she wouldn't have known it was her.
"Powder?"
The name startled the girl and Jinx pulled her hands away from her head to watch as Mai kneeled doe till she was face to face with the girl.
"Mai?"
A joyous laugh left her lips and Mai blindly reached out before pulling her into a secure hug that had Jinx stiff at first.
"Powder! I've missed you so much," her words made Jinx slowly wrap her own arms around Mai before eventually she sighed and relaxed into her embrace.
"I missed you too," she mumbled rather quieter but still cooed into Mai's arms.
"I- I thought you were dead," Mai pulled back to hold her face in her hands as her eyes scanned her face. The dark eyeshadow that enhanced her light blue eyes, her sharp jaw and hollow cheekbones that made Mai long forget the puffy faced little girl she knew. Her arms were defined in lean muscle and they were covered in tattoos of blue clouds that stemmed from the top of her shoulders to her stomach.
Jinx took in all of Mai, from the burns that licked up her neck and stopped below her ear that almost made her immediately look away in shame. They disappeared under the collar of her shirt and she wondered how far they went down. Her jaw was strong, cheek bones high and eyes a dark honeydew with her curls bounced even though they were tied back. Her arms were hidden but her forearms had lines within them promising muscle as well as the hint of a tattoo on her right arm that traveled upwards.
"You did?" Jinx sounded so innocent, so unaware of the truth as her face was still being held in the hands of Mai.
"But it was him all along," Mia snarled in the direction of the building that Silco was in. "Come on, you don't have to stay with him any longer we can leave, quickly."
Mai pulled her up by her arm but as she turned to run whilst holding her wrist it was as if Jinx had put on the breaks. She looked behind her to see Jinx staring at her with a subtle shake of her head, "I- I don't want to leave."
Mai tightened her grip on her wrist, "what do you mean you don't want to leave?" She stared at her like she was stupid, "Powder he killed Vander, he is the reason our whole family is dead."
Jinx snatched her arm back, "no, no he didn't," she bit her cheek, "I did."
Mai wasn't sure she heard her right, "you what?" It wasn't more of a question, she had heard Powder but she hoped she'd heard wrong.
"I killed them, all of them."
Mai took a shaky step back and Jinx turned her gaze to the floor, "no you didn't." Mai subconsciously reached her hand up to hold the side of her neck and Jinx gulped thickly as she watched her do so. She shook her head and pointed to the building, "he did, Powder, look-"
"My name is Jinx!" She spat her name out as she looked back up to meet Mai's eyes that were filled with fear and new revelation. "And Silco protected me."
Mai scoffed wildly, "protected you? Then how come you didn't know I was alive!" Jinx opened her mouth but she had no answer, "how come Enforcers on his pay roll tried to take me away, away from you."
Jinx felt the words hit her full force and she felt the whispering shouts return to her ears again. "Shut up, shut up," she muttered over and over whilst holding her hands over her ears. "He wouldn't do that," she tried to reason, "she's standing right in front of you, he doesn't trust you." Jinx cringed at the numerous voices in her head, "Mai!"
She looked up once more only to find her gone and yelled out loudly in frustration, was she even really there? Only when she reached for her leg pocket did she find the set of knives and gripped the edges tightly. The reflection of her eyes bounced off the cool metal, "he lied."
๐๐๐๐๐ walked up the steps to his office when he saw a knife dug into the map of his desk, it was one of Marrow's. The stripes of Jinx were covering the handle though they were rushed and the paint was still wet as it stained his fingertips.
"Do you want to hear a joke?" Silco heard Jinx's voice echo around the room. She didn't wait for a response, "what do you get when you say someone's dead even if there not?"
"Jinx-" Her started but she shushed him harshly.
"You end up dead yourself."
Jinx jumped out from her hiding places, down from the pillars, and brought her elbow down to hit the top of his head, hard. Silco groaned and held it as he fell to the floor whilst clutching the corner of his test as he hazily tried to get to his seat.
Jinx folded her arms as she watched him scramble to his chair. "It's- it's not what you think."
"Oh, isn't it?" She crouched in front of him whilst she sat on his desk and grabbed the leather of his seat. "Because it was your Enforcer friends who took her from me, you let me believe she was dead." At her last word she took the second knife of Mai's and punctured it near his head, nicking the side of his ear.
"I didn't know! Rest assured whoever took her all those years ago will pay a steep price." He desperately looked into her eyes as he lied to her face once more. "Please, Jinx, you are like a daughter to me, I have only ever done anything to protect you, I promise you."
Jinx still stared him down though her eyes began to soften slightly, she kicked him away and he spun round in his chair. By time he looked back she was gone and so were the knives lodged in his chair and desk.
๐๐๐ collapsed on her bed in her apartment she'd managed to buy from all her earnings. She dragged a hand down her face before clasping them together, "my knives!"
She reached for her wrists and went to check the rest of her pockets before shouting loudly and punching a hole in the wall. They took them from her, the last remnants of Vander she had left.
A small meow broke her from her thought and she pulled her hand out from the circle shape on the wall . Her expression softened and she leant down to reach for the black kitten with one blue eye and one green one.
"Hey, little guy," she picked him up and curled him into her arms. She had found him in a trash can searching for scraps, a stray, just like she was. His name was Link.
Mai stroked her fingers through his fur and he puffed wildly when her kind wandered once more. If Jinx was alive then did that mean- Vi!
"What do you say to an adventure?" The small kitten mewled and Mai smiled down to him before her face hardened as she looked out to the cities decided by a long bridge.
It was the dead of night, the Undercity was thriving with maniacs and drop heads and Mai would usually have been the once to stir up trouble. Yet, as Link rested on her shoulder with his head resting in her neck as they prowled the rooftops it was as if they didn't exist.
Mai was looking for something specific, some kind of specific person and then she spotted it. She smirked as she dangled from the edge of the roof whilst watching a set of three Enforcers patrol through the busy street.
They shoved and beat their way through the crowd and were moving at a fast pace, she needed a distraction. Mai took a small rock before launching it underneath the foot of a drunk fat man and he collapsed on a fruit stall leaving all the apples to roll out.
Carnage was quick to follow as starving, pissed or simply bored people scavenged for the food. The Enforcers shouted profanities and hit as many as they could to force them back but there was only two.
"No hard feelings," Mai remarked coyly as she barged the man down onto the floor in the alley. "Actually, nothing but hard feelings."
She swung a back legged kick at his face and his helmet bounced off the concrete before his head lulled back. Mai looked to the helmet with a stink eye and Link hissed at the sight of it, "yeah I don't want to wear it either."
With many grunts of disgust she managed to squeeze on the armour and cringed at the voice coming through the speaker in her helmet.
"Where are you? Get back out here now!" Mai rolled her eyes before shouldering a satchel he was wearing for carrying his weapons and gently placed Link into it.
"God damn it! We were getting swamped out here." One of the soldiers said to here as she emerged and shoved random people out the way, with less force than any there.
"Sorry," she cleared her throat to make her voice more gruffer, "I just couldn't hold it," she tapped her stomach. The man just nodded like it made sense and she rolled her eyes once more behind the shielded eye mask.
She quickly fell into step but out the corner of her eye she saw a small girl with her little brother hidden in a corner of a stall. Her eyes darted to the other Enforcer's before she rolled a number of apples in their direction.
Mai didn't wait to see their faces but heard the screeches of joy and the pattering of their light footsteps fading.
As she scanned her surroundings her footing stumbled slightly as she took in the sign, The Last Drop. At night the place was thriving, less like a neighbourhood bar and more like a club for the old and the young.
They bumped shoulders and many eyes were trained on them as they headed up the stairs and into his office. Twice in one day and she'd already had enough of his face .
"Marcus."
"Silco, what is it that you want?"
Silco had a confidence about him that felt compelling as he stretched himself out on his seat. Mai saw from the corner of her eye Sevika sitting on the couch with a sour face and scanning the men in front of her.ย ย
"It has come to my attention that you and your men failed to tell me about a girl who escaped your custody say," he narrowed his eyes and his orange one burned a hot hue. "A rough eleven years ago."
Marcus had taken off his helmet and Maj clenched her fists tightly together as she stared at the back of his head. She remembered him, oh as clear as day did she remember him, his volatile actions and dirty words. How he tried to drag her away into Stillwater prison where she would rot away like the dead.
Sevika squinted her gaze at the Enforcer on the far right, hands clenched into fists and their chest rose heavily.
Marcus stumbled back a minor step, "no- no I took care of the pink hai-." Silco slammed a hand on his desk whilst he stood up quickly.
"Don't speak of her around here!" He barked whilst looking wildly up at the ceiling to his office.
Mai felt her jaw ticking and her eye twitched, he took care of what? She seethed in her mind as she felt he knew exactly who he was talking about but she was afraid to admit it to herself.
"Not her, Mai."
Marcus seemed to have no answer as he fumbled over his words, "I- I couldn't catch her."
Mai put her hand on the holster of her gun and gripped it tightly in her hand.
Silco hummed and circled the rim of his glass with his finger, "and did you tell me?" Marcus lowered his head, "you have been a comfortable accomplice over the years, Marcus but if you would rather we be anything other than friends you may consider your contract terminated if you hide something like that from me again, are we clear?"
"Yes, Silco." It was clear he just wanted to leave.
"That's all." He said before spinning on his chair so his back was facing them.
The thrum of Mai's heart beat turned to thrashing as she clicked the safety off.
"Let's go, soldier," Marcus' voice made the silence break and Mai deeply breathed in calming breaths score turning on her heel.
Sevika followed her figure and had to look twice when she saw the head of a black cat staring back at her from out of a bag.
Though, as Mai walked out of the building and parted ways with the other Enforcers her mind ran haywire. If she managed to get away and if Powd- Jinx was still alive did that mean that Violet could be too.
๐๐๐๐ she returned home she hid the Enforcer armour behind one of the big enough holes in the wall she'd kicked through. For a rainy day she said to herself but Mai did not want to spend another second looking at the disgusting armour.
She began planning, plotting and trying to uncover every plausible scenario on what could have happened to Violet. Though, as she rethought the conversation back in Silco's office Stillwater couldn't leave her mind.
Marcus had meant to take care of her in the same way he did Violet but Mai had a superpower, she could tell when anyone was lying. So, if there's one place where you put someone because you wanted them dead it's the high security prison, Vi is in Stillwater.
Mai looked to her bed with a crude look, she hated sleep and envied those who could do so with ease. It wasn't the almost brick like material that she slept on but rather the nightmares that never ceased to come after her.
Most were the same more often than not with the fire swallowing her up from the waist down as she tried to search for freedom. Her running down an endless tunnel that held the echoing shouts of her loved ones doubting her or the cries of pain as they died that fateful night.
Although, there would be the frightening sense of familiarity between the balance of her dreams. She imagined being carried in the arms of something strong and solid before their grip slipped and she was left to fall further into the darkness and every time she fell she woke.
Though, as Link curled up next to her and she felt his soft fur brush against her skin it grounded her slightly more. Mai curled up into him and closed her eyes with the memory being repeated that Vi needed her help, she was still in her small, shitty apartment and she only hoped Jinx hadn't followed-
"Yeah, no," Mai shot up from the bed whilst Link whined but still stayed curled up in her pillow. She patiently sat on the window ledge that overlooked the streets whilst she stroked the edges of her dual pistols that had been hidden under her bed.
๐๐๐ laughed lightly as she balanced along the rickety piece of wooden plank that separated the two roof tops from one another.
"Quit fooling around, Mai!" Vi remarked from the other side of the plank.
Mai acting as if she hadn't heard her and pushed all her wait onto one foot whilst she held the other in the air.
Mylo whistled for her and Vi smacked him up the head but when Powder laughed as the girl jumped half way on one foot Vi spoke again. "Don't encourage her, Mai come on we have to get going!"
Claggor said nothing as he ate cup cakes from a rooftop, "oh relax, Violet I'm just taking in the gorgeous view." Mai outstretched her arms wide as she smiled brightly to the pink haired girl whose face remained unmoving.
"You'll be taking a punch to the face if you don't get over here."
Mai rolled her eyes and looked to Powder while she pointed at Vi, "I wonder how you do it, kid." The blue haired girl giggled and Mai smiled before she went to cross the beam, "alright I'm coming bossy."
Though, as she took another step the shot of a bullet rang out and Mai yelled loudly as it penetrated the wood before it started to crack.
"Mai!"
With her guns still had in her hand but a loud knock on her door made her eyes snap open and she stood pointed them to the door.
"Who is it?"
"It's me, you idiot, open up."
Mai recognised the voice and holstered her guns before opening the door to reveal Gabby, she was a fighter like Mai in the arena.
"Why are you here?" Gabby went to move forth into her apartment but Mai shut the door on her foot, "I didn't say come in."
The platinum haired girl rolled her eyes, Gabby knew how tense Mai was even after knowing each other for seven years. The girls walls were up high but she felt as though she owed Mai when she had been pit against three of the larger men in the arena and Mai jumped in.
Gabby was smaller than her by far with pale skin that looked almost sickly and probably was due to the poor nutrition. Her eyes constantly narrowed and green with her fists bloodied, she wasn't exactly packed with muscle but rather slim fitted and on the leaner side.
"They were asking for you last night."
Mai upturned her lip at the mention, "I was busy."
"Doing what?"
The black girl arched a brow becuase Gabby never asked this many questions. The pit fighter sliced her eyes to the side and Mai's eyes widened a little bit as she pulled out her guns once more.
"Hunting."
With that she grabbed Gabby and quickly pulled her into her apartment before firing sharply at the two men that hid round the corner. They dropped dead and Mai walked over before a purple liquid spilled from outside one of their jackets.
A sharp breath left her as she recognised the liquid, it was Shimmer. These were Silco's men. She reached down to pick up the vial and kicked the men's bodies until they fell down the stairwell. Mai eyed the vial in her hand as she held it over the height of stars.
"What is that?"
Gabby's voice broke her stare and she pocketed it instead, away from her line of sight.
"'Nothing." Mai rounded the girl and came to sit on her desk as she wrote down more ideas as to how she could get into and out of the prison with Vi.
"Stillwater? Girl, you're crazy if you're thinking of breaking into there. "
Mai just shrugged, "my friend needs me."
Gabby scoffed slightly, "if your friend got sent there then she's not coming back, not by force anyway."
Mai rubbed her temples, "if you've got nothing better to do besides leading criminals to my door then you can leave now."
Shuffles of feet were heard and Mai saw Gabby come to sit on the small foot stool beside her whilst holding Link in her hands.
"What's the plan?"
