I opened my eyes, at first- my eyes ached from the sun outside, but they quickly returned to normal. I could now move perfectly well, I felt perfectly fine. As if nothing had happened the day before. I leaned forward, now sitting on the cot I was on. I was in a medium sized room, it was painted a light yellow color with white trim. The door was light brown in color, and had a window at the top that was rather small. It seemed only there for the doctor or nurse to give a quick glance to make sure a patient is alive as they walk down the hall. There were three cupboards off to the side of the room, I guessed this had medication inside. On the opposite side of the room was a door with a sign that read, "Bathroom."

I stood up quickly, I expected my legs to be wobbly- but it seemed to be the opposite. My legs felt normal, maybe even better than usual. They didn’t even feel numb, just- completely fine. They might have even felt better than the day before.

"He's awake!" Someone yelled from outside the door. A doctor then walked in the room. He was an older man, probably about sixty five. He didn't have much hair left, but the remaining hair was a white silky color. He wore black glasses, and had a white lab coat with black jeans. He also had a name tag that read, “Dr. Chandler.”

"Hi," I said waving slightly, ‘This could either go well- or super bad. Won’t this be fun,’ I thought to myself sarcastically. I was worried, but at the same time- I was rather curious. ‘This entire city, at least what i’ve seen- can use magic..’ I thought to myself still surprised.

“Hello, my name is Liam,” The man said. His voice was a lower pitch, and sounded, as if- monotoned in a way.

“I’m Carter,” I replied, unsure of what else to say.

The man took a pocket watch out of his pocket. It was golden in color,  and it looked to be an older model. On the top it had a balance with the right side being higher than the left. The left looked to be held down by a hand. The hand had the second and third finger crossed, showing the symbol of deceit. The right simply resembled the two fingers straight, resembling truth.

I looked at the watch curious what it was. “Is that some sort of lie detector?” I asked.

The man looked over at me, he seemed surprised at first, but his face then returned to neutral. “That’s correct,” Liam replied nodding slightly. “I assume you learned about these in class?” The man asked.

“No, just a lucky guess,” I said honestly. “A balance represents, well, balance. And crossed fingers represents lying.”

“Correct once again,” The man said nodding, “I need to ask you a few questions, I hope that’s okay.”

“Fine with me,” I replied. ‘Not like I have a choice. I don’t even have a place to head after this. To make it worse, I can’t even use magic without my spell book,’ I thought to myself annoyed.

“My first question, is about your aura,” Liam said.

“What about it?” I asked confused.

“It’s white. Meaning you just started. Which to be honest is extremely odd for someone your age. Have you not decided your path yet?” Liam asked.

“Well-” I began, unsure how to explain the situation I was in.

Someone then knocked on the door, I sighed in relief. It was the woman from earlier.

Liam did a thumbs up, letting her come in.

She nodded, then opened the door and walked in. “Hello, not to be rude, but how long will this take?” She asked.

“You’re free to take him whenever you please,” Liam replied.

“Wonderful, I suppose we’ll be leaving then,” She said.

“I do warn you though. If he doesn’t pick his path soon he may never be able to,” Liam said.

“Yes, I’m aware,” The woman said.

I nodded, trying to speed up the process of leaving. ‘Liam already seemed suspicious, and leaving soon was my best option. “Anyways, see ya later doc,” I said, standing up to leave.

“Okay, but try to be more careful next time,” Liam said.

“Ya I will,” I said nodding, opening the door to leave. The woman and I then headed out, walking to the elevator we were in originally. I clicked the button that read “reception” and the doors closed. “Thanks for saving me back there,” I said.

“Lets just say- I was completing a favor I had from a friend,” The woman said looking at her watch, then back forward towards the wall.

“Who?” I asked, raising an eyebrow confused. ‘Perhaps it was Jenny?’ I thought to myself. ‘I didn’t have many friends, so my mind seemed completely blank of who it could be.”

“I couldn’t tell you,” She replied. The elevator doors then opened, and we both began to walk outside the hospital.

“Why’s that?” I asked, turning to look at them.

“They told me to keep it a secret,” She responded, still walking forward.

“Go figures,” I said annoyed. “But why, seems they’d want the credit,” I said walking onto the sidewalk.

“I couldn’t tell ya if i’m being honest,” She replied looking down slightly, seeming ashamed of not knowing. As if it was rather obvious, but she couldn’t predict the reasoning. “But I do have a theory of course.”

“Well, I’m all ears,” I retorted.

“It’s possible they have certain motives, especially with you having control over that spell book,” She replied.

“What’s the deal over that spell book anyways?” I asked confused.

“Well, as you probably know, spell books are rather rare in general,” She began. “But yours- is rather, different. It’s actually much more rare, only one in the entire planet of it exists. It’s actual name is ¡tiŒ ássŒç¡ckãá, also known as the greeting,” She said.

“Well isn’t that special,” I said nodding.

“Indeed,” She said.

“So- if it’s that wonderful, why haven’t you tried to take it from me?” I asked.

“Well, as I've said- I’m doing a favor for a friend.  Killing you wouldn’t make them to pleased, plus you don’t even have the book with you,” She said.

“Killing me?” I asked, raising an eyebrow. “Why would ya do that?”

“Once someone bonds with the spell book, no one else can use it. If someone was to kill a part of the bond, the book would search for a new person to bond with,” She replied.

“Guess I got myself in quite the predicament,” I said rather annoyed, “It’s just my luck this happens.”

“I suppose so,” She replied.

“I guess I’ll be on my way then,” I said.

“Do you really want that?” She asked.

“What do you mean?” I asked.

“Well, I could teach you at least the basics of lyrical magic. So if someone does attack you, you’d be able to- well, not die,” She said.

“Well-” I said quietly, thinking about the offer. ‘What did I really have to lose? Not like my family exactly wants me,’ I thought to myself, ‘But this could be fun..’ “Fine, I accept,” I replied eventually.

The woman stopped, and turned towards me. “So, we have a deal?” She asked, placing out her hands towards me.

“Yes, we do,” I replied, shaking her hand.
