Steve's path: Chapter 2 (Optional Read)
The morning sun gently spilled into the room, its golden rays filtering through the curtains and casting a warm glow over the space. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee filled the air, mingling with the soft hum of the coffee maker, which seemed to announce the start of a new day with its quiet buzz.
Steve sat on the edge of the bed, dressed in a simple white shirt that underscored his relaxed demeanor. His gaze was fixed on Nova, who lay peacefully in bed. Her breathing was steady and calm, as if she were savoring the tranquility of her dreams. The room, bathed in morning light, felt serene and intimate.
As Nova's eyes slowly fluttered open, she greeted the new day with a soft, sleepy voice. "Good morning," she said, her tone carrying the lingering drowsiness of just waking up.
A warm smile spread across Steve's lips. "Good morning, sweetheart. How did you sleep?"
Nova's heart swelled with affection. "I slept well, especially with you by my side," she replied, her eyes shining with genuine happiness.
Steve leaned in, first planting a gentle kiss on Nova's forehead, then brushing his lips softly against her eyes. As he gradually moved towards her lips, Nova gave him a light, almost imperceptible push. "I haven't brushed my teeth yet," she said, a hint of embarrassment in her voice.
Steve's smile remained undeterred. "I don't mind," he said softly. He cradled Nova's face tenderly, his lips meeting hers in a gentle kiss.
The kiss began as a delicate touch, like a soft feather brushing against her lips. Nova's lips parted slightly, welcoming the tender intimacy. As Steve's tongue gently brushed against hers, their breaths quickened, and the kiss grew more passionate. Steve's lips caressed hers with a tender intensity, each touch bringing an indescribable pleasure.
Just as the kiss deepened, Nova felt a sudden, cool sensation on her finger. She instinctively glanced down and was surprised to find a dazzling diamond ring on her hand. "It's really beautiful," she whispered, her eyes widening in awe.
"I'm glad you like it," Steve said, examining the ring with satisfaction. "It fits perfectly."
Steve raised Nova's hand gently, looking at her with a serious yet affectionate gaze. "Although we haven't formally discussed our future, I want you to know that you are my beloved, my one and only. This ring represents my feelings for you; it's not just a decoration but a symbol of my promise to you. Nova, I love you."
Nova's eyes welled up with tears as she absorbed Steve's heartfelt words. "You really touched me. Thank you, Steve. I love you too." She leaned in to kiss Steve again, their embrace deepening. However, just as their moment was growing more intense, the alarm clock rang loudly, interrupting their tender moment.
"Steve, we can't continue; we're going to be late for work," Nova said, trying to gently push Steve away.
Steve remained unmoved, a playful smile on his face. "We can take a day off."
"Steve..." Nova nudged him again, trying to balance their private moment with the reality of their schedule. "We have plenty of time to spend together later."
"Alright," Steve conceded, smiling as he picked Nova up suddenly, catching her by surprise. She instinctively clung to his neck. "Steve, what are you doing?"
"You said we shouldn't waste time, so I'm taking you to brush your teeth to make it quicker," Steve said with a playful grin.
The once-bare room now showed the changes that had occurred over the past month. The display cabinet in the living room, once reserved for Steve's collectibles, was now filled with plush toys, some bought by Nova and others won during their outings to claw machines. These outings had become a favorite pastime for them, filled with laughter and friendly competition. Each toy represented a small victory and a cherished memory.
The kitchen had also transformed, now brimming with cookware. Nova had taken to cooking occasionally, with Steve often helping out. The countertops, once bare, were now adorned with various kitchen gadgets and utensils, evidence of their culinary experiments. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee mingled with the scent of toast, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere that contrasted sharply with the sterile environment of Steve's home just a few weeks prior.
The light gray sofa was now adorned with brightly colored cushions, and a bouquet of fresh flowers rested on the coffee table—clearly a touch from Nova.
What had once been a showroom-like space now looked more like a cozy love nest. Each small detail testified to the new chapter in Steve's life, filled with warmth and love brought by Nova.
After breakfast, Nova and Steve went out together, ready for their workday. Steve attentively fastened Nova's seatbelt with a caring touch.
"Is this a girlfriend's privilege?" Nova asked with a smile.
"Of course," Steve replied, "and there will be many more perks to come."
"I'm looking forward to it," Nova said, her eyes twinkling with anticipation.
As they neared the company, Steve turned to Nova with a teasing smile. "Dear lady, do you plan to announce your boyfriend to the public?"
Typically, Nova would get out near the company entrance and enter separately from Steve.
"Of course, I want to show off my handsome boyfriend. Just drive to the company," Nova said with a grin.
When Nova appeared at the company, arm-in-arm with Steve, it caused quite a stir. As the CEO, Steve was always the center of attention, and his girlfriend drew even more interest.
"You're practically the company's star; everyone is really curious about you," Nova said, acknowledging the buzz.
"As the 'star's' girlfriend, you're bound to attract attention too," Steve replied with a smile. "Enjoy it." They parted ways in the elevator. "Remember to think of me."
"I will," Nova said, her voice full of warmth.
As soon as Nova entered the marketing department, she was surrounded by curious colleagues. Emma, who was close to her, spoke up first. "Nova, are you and Steve—am I seeing this right? Are you two—"
Nova smiled and nodded, trying to appear natural. "Yes, we're now a couple."
"When did this start? Why wasn't it mentioned before?" another colleague asked, clearly surprised.
Nova responded, "Initially, I didn't want anyone to think I was here because of my relationship with Steve. I've decided to go public now because I believe my work abilities have been recognized."
Anna chimed in, "I truly think you two are a perfect match. I hope you'll be happy together!"
Nova thanked her with a grateful smile. "Thank you for your kind words."
At that moment, Sophia walked out of her office. "It's work time, not chat time."
The colleagues returned to their workstations, and Emma leaned in to whisper to Nova, "Sophia's just jealous. Now that everyone knows you're Steve's girlfriend, she won't be so hard on you."
Nova was surprised by how long the day felt. She used to be completely absorbed in her work, with time seeming to fly by. But now her mind was filled with thoughts of Steve, and even a few hours apart felt like an eternity. She forced herself to focus on her work, temporarily pushing aside thoughts of Steve.
She was so absorbed in her tasks that she barely noticed the constant notifications on her phone. By the time she checked it, three hours had already passed.
Steve (9:30 AM): As soon as we parted, I started thinking about you. Good morning, darling! The sunshine today is beautiful; I wish you were here to share it with me.
Steve (10:05 AM): Are you busy?
Steve (10:40 AM): Remember we have a lunch date today? I'm looking forward to spending time with you.
Steve (11:45 AM): Sorry, an unexpected meeting came up. We'll have to skip lunch today.
Nova opened Steve's messages and couldn't help but smile. She quickly typed her reply:
"Sorry for missing your messages earlier. I miss you too. It's alright, just make sure you have lunch."
As the end of the workday approached, Nova received a message from Steve saying he wouldn't be able to leave on time and asked her to go home first.
Feeling a pang of disappointment, she decided to buy a bouquet of flowers on her way home, hoping it might lift her spirits.
Walking out of the office, she strolled down the street, gradually leaving the company area. She found a small, charming flower shop where the air was filled with the fragrance of fresh blooms. Nova carefully selected a bouquet of vibrant roses, thinking they would brighten up her home and improve her mood.
As she walked out of the shop with the bouquet in hand, a gentle evening breeze kissed her face, and her mood began to lift. She sent a voice message to Steve: "I just bought a bouquet from a flower shop near the company. How much longer is your meeting? I can wait for you."
Suddenly, a man's voice called out from behind. "Evelyn?"
Nova ignored it, assuming the voice was directed at someone else, and continued walking. However, a man who looked strikingly similar to Steve appeared in front of her. "Evelyn, I'm Liam!"
The man before her was likely her fiancé from before her memory loss, Steve's brother, Liam. But from the moment she chose to become Nova, Evelyn and Nova had become separate individuals. She had no interest in getting involved in Liam and Evelyn's past.
"Sorry, sir, you must have mistaken me for someone else. I'm Nova, not Evelyn," she said firmly, trying to move past Liam.
Liam, looking distressed, grabbed Nova's left hand. "It's impossible, you're Evelyn! The mole on your hand is in the same spot as Evelyn's, and your voice is the same. How could I mistake my own fiancée! Evelyn, please don't pretend not to know me. I can't lose you. I've looked into your father's matter, and it has nothing to do with me. There's no reason we can't be together now."
"Sorry, sir, you really have the wrong person. Let go of me..." Nova's voice trembled as she tried to free herself.
Just then, Steve's car pulled up, and he saw Nova struggling with Liam. Steve hurriedly got out of the car. "Let her go!"
As Liam heard the familiar voice, he froze momentarily, a look of disbelief crossing his face. Nova, feeling a surge of urgency, swiftly pulled her hand away from Liam's grasp and hurried to Steve's side. Steve, his expression a mix of concern and apology, turned to Nova and asked, "Are you okay? I'm really sorry I'm late."
Nova shook her head, her eyes reflecting a mixture of relief and lingering anxiety.
The sight of Nova and Steve holding hands was unmistakable to Liam. It became clear to him what their relationship was. Without missing a beat, Nova quietly urged Steve, "Let's go home." They started to turn away, but Liam abruptly stepped into their path, blocking their way.
"Move out of the way!" Steve commanded.
Liam, however, stood his ground, unmoving and resolute.
Steve's patience wore thin. With a simmering rage, he challenged Liam, "Do you want to fight?" Fueled by anger, Steve threw a heavy punch aimed at Liam's shoulder. The impact made Liam grunt in pain, and he staggered backward. However, Liam quickly retaliated, landing a sharp punch to Steve's abdomen that made Steve double over in agony.
"I've harbored a grudge against you for a long time. This punch is what you owe me for causing me harm!" Steve roared, his voice echoing with fury as he swung his right hand with all his might toward Liam's face. His fist grazed Liam's cheek, causing him intense pain.
Despite the pain, Liam endured. He deftly sidestepped Steve's attack and responded with a punch to Steve's chest, causing Steve to stagger backward, struggling to catch his breath. "Do you find it satisfying to see your own brother with my fiancée, you bastard?" Liam bellowed, his face flushed with anger. "I've told you countless times it was an accident. If you want the inheritance of the company, I can give it to you. Who would have thought a coward like you would run off without a word?"
Steve's face reddened with fury. Clutching his injured chest, he tightened his fist, preparing for a counterattack. He charged at Liam with renewed aggression and forcefully shoved him to the ground. "I don't need you to hand it over to me! I'm naturally better suited to run the company; it was rightfully mine!" Steve shouted, his voice filled with rage as he pounded his fist against Liam's back.
"Enough! Stop!" Nova implored, trying desperately to intervene and stop the violence, but her attempts were in vain.
After taking a hit, Liam bent over in pain but quickly regained his composure and retaliated with a punch to Steve's side. Steve groaned in response and took a step back, momentarily dazed. Fueled by anger, he lunged at Liam once more, landing a forceful punch to Liam's face. Liam staggered backward, blood trickling from the corner of his mouth. "Nova is my girlfriend. Stop bothering her!" Steve roared, raising his fist again, aiming for Liam's abdomen.
Knocked down, Liam looked up at Steve with burning fury. "Her name is Evelyn, not Nova! Evelyn is not your girlfriend; she's my fiancée!" With a swift, furious motion, Liam quickly got up and delivered a powerful kick to Steve.
The two men exchanged a flurry of blows and kicks, their mutual anger and pain only intensifying the fierce altercation.
Seizing the opportunity, Nova placed herself squarely between them. "Stop this! Is it honorable for the Montgomery family's two most outstanding individuals to behave like common thugs in public?" she said, her voice brimming with anger.
Steve adjusted his tie, and Liam smoothed out his disheveled clothes. As their eyes inadvertently met, they both snorted disdainfully and then turned their heads away, the fight momentarily paused.
