Le Dernier Seigneur Vivant [The Last Living Lord] -Arcturus Black
Arcturus Black was a fool. How had he never noticed his daughter-in-laws sick mind? How had he never noticed his son's unusual silence? How had he never noticed the neglect, scars and pain in the eyes of all his grandchildren. How had he never noticed the black and blue bruises they wore? How had he never noticed the fact that his family was crumbling? How had he been so blind?
Arcturus Black always adored his grandson, Sirius. Perhaps it was because Sirius was so much like Orion as a boy or preheats it was because he always longed for another son, but he always was rather fond of his mischievous Gryffindor grandson. So imagine his hidden shock (a black never shows emotion) when Walburga came to him and demanded he remove Sirius as the family heir, as he had run away from home and been disowned. Of course he didn't listen to her, if there was one thing he had learned from his time as Lord Black was that people often argued themselves hoarse to prove a point or get what they want and usually left the other person annoyed and crazy.
Arcturus black was not in the mood to argue right now. So he did what any smart man would do and just listened to Walburga complain and nod in the right places, (he was really not in the mood to listen to his harpy-like daughter-in-law complain and yell), this continued on until she finally got tired and her voice almost gone from shouting and after she left, Arcturus tried to stop himself from obliviating this particular conversation from his mind. To his dying day he will always wonder what possessed him to allow his son to marry his witch.....literally.
Arcturus Black was suspicious. His youngest grandchild, Regulus was acting strange, (well stranger than usual). He did understand why though, after all the boy's father was in Azkaban after all and Regulus being the heir now, (since his brother was disowned) was left to take care of his mother and now being Orion's only son, had to takeover all of Orion's duties. Yet a part of Arcturus still wasn't satisfied with this explanation, but he decided to shrug it off, Regulus Black always had been a weird one. But little did he know, that if he had cared a little more, he could have been able to save a boy who had the burdens of the world on his shoulders, from his demise.
Arcturus Black was shocked. Sirius was in Azkaban. The little boy who would run around the manner chasing his brother, the teenager who stood up strong for what he believed in and didn't care what anyone else thought of him, the adult who was a brave man that fought in a war and went out everyday whether as an Auror or an order member, (yes he knew about that) to risk his life for others. But as he lay on his bed that night, something about that didn't sit right with Arcturus, why would they say Sirius worked for Voldemort? Sirius would rather die than do that, and why would they say he betrayed the Potters? The same Potters who his grandson loved more than his own family, the same Potters he defended and praised I front of his parents, the same Potters who he considered his true family.
Arcturus Black III was dead. The last black lord died almost a decade after the faithful night at Godric's Hollow. He had spent the last decade in peace, watching Walburga to reduced to nothing, but a mere portrait and trying to find evidence that Sirius was innocent, yet he had found nothing. And as Arcturus laying on his bed dying, he realized he would change many things about his life, but decided not to spent his last few hours drowning in regret. So that's what he did, he spent his last few hours on earth remembering his wife, his children and the life he lived, and sometime in the quiet morning of 1991 Arcturus Black descended for the heavens.
