Chapter XII

"You only have to take those if you happen to get a headache," the nurse told me, handing me a small jar with some pills in it.

"Okay," I simply replied, taking them.

"Your family will be here soon to pick you up?" She asked me with a kind smile.

I could feel Ghost shift underneath the blanket, getting more comfortable on the hospital bed. I had no idea what to think about Ghost being an angel – an actual angel. I was shocked mostly, but somewhere deep down I always must have known. I had tried getting more out of him, but Ghost refused to speak. If he could speak in his cat-form. Just your every morning, I sarcastically thought.

"A friend will pick me up." I told the nurse, realizing I had yet to answer her question and she was still waiting for an answer. "They should be here soon."

"Very well, dear," the nurse said, "just go to the waiting room to wait for your friend." She glanced down at Ghost who's head had poked out from underneath the blanket, the angel-cat staring up at the nurse with his intelligent mismatched eyes. "And next time, don't bring your cat with you. Pets aren't allowed in the hospital."

I gave her a sheepish smile. "Will do, I'm sorry."

The nurse helped me out of the hospital bed and I put on my normal clothes before I hurried away, Ghost padding after me, i went towards the waiting room and sat down.

Taking my phone out of my pocket I texted Alec. I'm in the waiting room, hurry up jerk.

A sigh left my lips and I put my phone away. I hugged the backpack close against my chest. When Ghost had bought me to the hospital in his humanoid form, he was kind enough to bring my backpack with him. And luckily for me, everything was still in it and the books weren't damaged. The nurse had convinced me that they haven't even opened it.

"You know, Ghost," I whispered. Ghost looked up at me. "Thank you for back then," I said, glancing down at him. "I just realized I haven't even thanked you yet for saving my sorry arse back there."

The cat bowed his grand head in reply, purring softly. I went and rubbed him behind his ear. "You were very awesome back then," I said, grinning to myself, "who can say that their cat is a badass angel?"

I had yet to figure out just which angel Ghost was, but I felt certain he would reveal that to me when the time was right. I trusted him.

"BITCH!!" A familiar voice yelled loudly. Many looked at the source of the sound; most looking either disturbed or offended.

I looked up and my gaze landed on Alec who was sprinting towards me like he had all of Hell chasing after him. Alec skidded to a stop before me, leaning forward with his hands on his knees, panting loudly and slightly shaking. "Why the sprint?" I asked in amusement, a slight grin on my face.

His dark eyes fell on me, giving me a grazed look. "I wanted to see with my own eyes if you were still alive, is that such a crime?" The scrawny guy asked, placing his hand over his heart in mock-hurt. Alec pouted and spread his arms. "Hug?"

Rolling my eyes, I put the backpack on the chair and stood up, hugging the idiot. "Thanks for picking me up," I whispered.

Alec patted my back. "That's where friends are for. Let's go to my place, bitch, I give you pancakes. Ana is there already."

"Pancakes!" I said enthusiastically, pulling away and grinning wildly. "Let's go then. I want something else than that hospital food."

I picked up my bag and hurried towards the exit, Alec and Ghost hot on my heels. "Was it really that bad?" Alec asked me on our way out, referring to the hospital food.

Now it was my time to give him a crazed look. "The food had barely any taste. So yes, it was pretty horrible." I put a mock-horrified expression on my face and Alec laughed.

"Let's hurry up then," he replied, jumping out of the way for a small family, "Ana is already waiting at my home."

"Are you sure that's such a good idea? Leaving Ana alone, I mean." I felt slightly concerned. "You do realize that she's probably raiding your fridge, right?"

Arching up a singly eyebrow, Alec replied, "I put a lock on the fridge and cupboards alike so she can't reach my food," he held up a small silver key, "and this is the key."

Shaking my head in amusement, I followed Alec into the parking lot, Ghost right next to me. Seeing Alec's beat-up truck in the distance, I sped up.

"Calm down! You just got out of the hospital," Alec called after me, huffing slightly.

"I want pancakes, alright? There's no better medicine than food." I replied, putting the backpack in the trunk and impatiently tapping my foot to wait for Alec. Ghost stood next to me and looked up at the truck for a second, before he jumped and landed into the trunk as well. "Hurry up, jerk."

"Shut up, bitch."

When Alec finally arrived, he clicked the car open and sat on the driver's seat. "Stay put, Ghost," I said to the angel before I sat shotgun myself.

Pulling out of the parking lot, Alec drove towards his apartment.

.

"Harlynn!" Ana shrieked loudly the moment we opened the door. The redhead shot towards me and hugged me tightly. "It's so good to see you well! It wasn't the same without you," she said enthusiastically, bouncing on her feet.

"Good to see you too, Ana," I replied, hugging the shorter girl back. I pulled back and glanced back at Alec who was carrying my bag. "Pancakes?" I asked hopefully.

Alec rolled his eyes. "I'll get on it," he said and disappeared inside the apartment.

A hissing was heard and Ana and I looked down at Ghost. The cat was glaring at Ana and had his fangs bared, hissing lowly. "Oh, get over it!" Ana whined, kneeling down and scowling at the cat. "I'm sorry I sat on your tail. It was an accident!" She said.

Ghost huffed and puffed out his chest, sassily swaying past us with his tail and head held high and going after Alec.

"He will probably never forgive you. He can hold a grudge," I told Ana, patting her shoulder. "Let's go inside. Alec is making pancakes."

"Pancakes," Ana grumbled. "Do it for the pancakes," she added, going into the apartment as well. Shaking my head at my friends – and the angel disguised as a cat – I followed after them.

.

"How is Ghost not dead yet? Or fat?" Alec wondered aloud, staring at the white cat who was happily munching on some pancakes with a lot of strawberry sauce. "Cats shouldn't be able to eat pancakes and not die from it." Ghost looked up from his pancakes, strawberry sauce dripping down from his chin, and he gave Alec a horrified expression.

I glanced at Ghost. "He liked pancakes and has a fast metabolism." I realized it probably had to do with him being an angel and I wondered how I never realized it before. People are blind to those closest to them, my subconsciousness noted. I couldn't help but agree.

"Don't worry about Ghost," I added, "he will be fine. He eats pancakes pretty often and never gets ill from them."

Alec put another pancake in front of me and I grinned widely. I picked up the chocolate sauce and poured it over the pancake. "I love pancakes so much," I said happily.

"That's why I made them for you," Alec said to that, "I know they are your favorite food."

My phone vibrated against my leg - I had put it in the pocket of my jeans - and I took it out, checking the notification.

Lunar eclipse tonight, it read. My eyes slightly widened when I recalled what my grandfather told me; to look at the journal in the light of the lunar eclipse. I almost forgot about that, I mentally cursed to myself.

"What is it?" Ana asked between a mouthful of pancakes, her cheeks puffed out like a squirrel's.

"A reminder," I replied, glancing at the time. It was almost noon, so I still had enough time. I allowed myself to relax slightly, mentally thanking the Gods above that I was smart enough to put up a reminder. "Something I promised my grandfather I would do," I added.

At least that's not a complete lie, I bitterly thought. I don't like lying to my friends, but I figured that when their lives were at stake, I had no problem doing it. And that scared me, it scared me even more than dragons and demons and everything else that might be lurking within the shadows.

"What is it then?" Ana asked, putting another mouthful of pancakes in her mouth. "Help them with the laundry or groceries maybe?"

"Yeah," I said, "I would do some groceries for them." And another lie.

"Are you sure that's such a good idea?" Alec asked from the kitchen, flipping a pancake in the air with a frying pan. "You did just get released from the hospital."

"Perhaps that's what I need," I muttered, moving the pancake around my plate with my fork before I pricked the fork in it and put it in my mouth. "I'm pretty sure I will survive."

"If you say so," Alec replied, sounding unsure.

Ana's sharp eyes were focused on me and the look she gave made me feel uncomfortable. She leaned forward and smirked. "I think you are lying," she whispered lowly so Alec wouldn't hear. My eyes slightly widened. Oh crap. "You are meeting with a guy are you not?" She whispered enthusiastic. "Is it Mr. Mysterious?"

I gave her a blank look.

Ana shrugged her shoulders. "Hey, I'm not judging you here, okay?" She told me, holding up her hands in surrender. "I hope you just know what you're doing."

"I know what I'm doing," I hope. I replied, deciding to just play along.

Nodding her head, Ana focused her attention back on the pancakes. "What were you two talking about?" Alec asked, going back to the table with a pancake of his own.

"Girl stuff," I simply said.

Alec visibly shuddered. "Then I don't want to know," he muttered while putting sugar and syrup on his pancake.

Ghost meowed loudly and I glanced down. His plate was empty and he was giving me a hopeful look. "You glutton," I muttered. I took a small piece of my own pancake and threw it on his plate. Ghost licked his lips and started to eat the small piece of chocolate-covered pancake. "That's all you're getting."

.

"You're sure you'll be fine?" Alec asked, the worry clear in his deep brown eyes. "I can drive you home, or to your grandparents, if you want," he offered.

It was roughly three in the afternoon now. After we had finished the pancakes, and done the dishes, we had settled for watching Attack on Titan, me and Ana arguing on who was hotter; Eren or Levi - much to Alec's horror, he just wanted to watch the anime in silence.

I was now standing in front of Alec's door, my friends standing in front of me, both having worried expressions on their faces.

"I will be fine," I assured them, "I have Ghost." As if on cue, Ghost meowed from next to me. I looked down and Ghost nodded his head, letting me know that if I were to be attacked by any monsters on my way home, he would protect me.

Arms wrapped around me and Ana hugged me tight. "Take care and come back tomorrow, alright? We can order Chinese food or something." I laughed and agreed, hugging her back. "Have fun with Mr. Mysterious," she whispered in my ear, winking when she pulled her head back to look at me. I choose to ignore her comment.

Pulling back, I gave each of my friends a pointed look. "Don't kill each other in my absence, okay?"

"No promises!" Ana chirped with a smile. Alec rolled his eyes. "Laters, girl!"

I swung the backpack on my back and headed towards the elevator, waving at my friends and Ghost following me like a shadow; swift and silent.

Going down with the elevator, I exited the apartment-complex not too long afterwards.

Once outside, the honks of cars and murmurs of the people passing by met my ears. Smiling to myself, I descended the stairs and mingled myself into the busy afternoon crowd.

Some people gave me - especially Ghost - weird looks, probably wondering to themselves why I was walking with a cat through the streets of Manhattan. It's considered 'normal' to walk with a dog, so what's so weird about walking with a cat? I thought to myself. Except that Ghost is not a cat but an actual angel, my subconsciousness added. They don't know that he is though, everyone else would just see a large white cat.

No back alleys this time, I told myself, nodding my head. Ghost looked up at me but did not made a single noise. I wondered to myself – not for the first time – if angels were capable of reading minds or speaking telepathically, or if that was just a myth.

Checking the time on my phone, I walked past some restaurants and bars. Something made me stop dead in my tracks though. Some people behind me started to complain, but they still walked past me.

He was easy to spot in the crowd, most of it thanking to his height. The sunlight reflected off his pitch-black hair and he pushed his way inside a pizzeria, two other guys following him. The Trickster-demon was talking to a guy with light brown hair – almost golden in the light of the sun. He laughed at something the golden-brown haired guy said and I arched my eyebrows. I never saw him laugh before. I couldn't see his expression, but I could imagine it. I could imagine how his face lit up in glee, I could imagine the musical and clear sound of his laughter and how the hatred disappeared from his deep gaze; even if just for a while. I immediately liked the golden-haired guy, simply for making him laugh and forget.

The third guy in their small group was slightly smaller than the others – but still much taller than I was – and had deep brown hair, curled at the end. He was the last to enter the pizzeria, his hand was on the door and just when I thought he would enter the restaurant, he turned to look my way.

Greenish blue eyes focused at me, clear and watchful. And just like with the Trickster, he had this inhuman and nauseating feel about him, like a dark aura. His lips curled up around the edges and I saw a flash of a mouthful of razor-sharp fangs, before he as well entered the restaurant, going after his friends. Or at least, I just assume that they are friends.

After having regained my composure, I glanced down at Ghost. Just as I expected, he was still by my side. His mismatched eyes had narrowed slightly and he was glaring at the tree males who went into the restaurant not too long ago.

"They are demons, aren't they?" I whispered under my breath, but I knew Ghost could hear me. His green eyes fell on me and he slowly nodded his head, but from his expression I knew there was more to them than I originally thought.

"Let's hurry back home," I muttered, hurrying past the pizzeria. Ghost on my trail.

Daring myself to look inside through the window, I saw them. All three of them were looking my way. The golden-brown haired one and the one with the curls – ocean green eyes and the other light blue like molted silver – quickly lost interest and looked elsewhere. But the Trickster kept looking my way, his dark blue eyes unreadable.

I hurried past the restaurant and could feel his unnerving gaze on me all the way back home.

Rest assured, for the next chapter is here, little demons! Perhaps a day later than usual, but it's still in the same week so it should be fine :)

Harlynn is out of the hospital - yay! - and she has encountered 'Mr. Mysterious/ Trickster' once more! Who do you think those other guys are who were with him? I give you a hint, they are fallen angels as well :) What do you think is going to happen next? Predictions?

A very important question. Do you like/love pancakes?

Lucifer: They are not as good as Mac 'n Cheese, but they are okay, I guess. If they have a lot of melted cheese on them at least.

Author: I don't remember asking you

Lucifer: I don't care. I answered anyway

Author: But while you're here anyway, you might as well answer a few question

Lucifer: No

Author: *sing songs* If you refuse I will have your baby-making parts removed. I am the author, I can do it

Lucifer: ......

Lucifer: A few questions won't hurt anyone

Author: Good. First question. What kind of underwear are you currently wearing?

Lucifer: .... What? Uhm... boxers

Author: Will do for now I guess... Next question. If you could give yourself one skill, what would it be?

Lucifer: I always wanted to know how to juggle

Author: Interesting. Interesting. Another question. Do you have horns and a tail?

Lucifer: Tail, yes. Horns, no - in this form at least.

Harlynn: *pops up out of nowhere* What? Where am I? *notices Lucifer* What are you doing here?

Lucifer: Hello kitten. *turns to author* Can I leave now? I have things to do and don't feel like dealing with kitten over here

Author: You answered the questions, so you can go

Harlynn: Wait! At least tell me your name before you leave!

Lucifer: *turns to Harlynn* How about no? *disappears and goes back to story*

Harlynn: How rude...

Author: Tell me about it

Harlynn: Who are you?

Author: I am the Creator. I bought you here so you could answer some questions

Harlynn: Uhm sure. Can I go back afterwards?

Author: Of course, dear. Here's your first question. What's your favorite food?

Harlynn: Pancakes with a lot of chocolate sauce and if possible, powdered sugar and strawberries

Author: Oh, that's good. The next and last question. Are you human?

Harlynn: Truth to be told, I'm not even sure of that anymore myself.

Author: Okay, you can go now. *zaps Harlynn back to story*

Okay, that was the question time for now. I will have Lucifer do the dare another time (poor thing was kinda in a bad mood) but in the mean time, if you have some more questions yourself - for any character really - feel free to comment them! Feel free to give dares as well :)

That was it for now and until the next time! Don't forget to vote/comment/share if you liked it!

Hugs and knives,

- Luci
