Chapter 18
"(Y/N), wake up! The second round is over. You have to get up."
You groaned, rolling to your side and covering your face in your sheet. "Go away Izuku. I don't care if I'm late..." You mumbled.
"Lat- (Y/N) we're at school! You passed out after the first exam!"
"The first... wait, what?!" You jolted up, looking about you only to see a stark white room. "The festival! I'm missing it!"
"It's okay. You passed the first round in about 18th place." Izuku spoke slowly, smiling at you fondly.
"I did?" You asked in a bewildered way. "I don't remember. It's all... jumbled... when does the second part start?! How long was I out??"
"Actually... it already happened. Mineta took your place since you couldn't compete... sorry (Y/N)..."
"What?" Your entire body dropped, disappointment oozing from your posture. "But I trained so hard... I didn't even get to show off in the relay."
You held your face in your hands, a deep sighing shambling from your mouth. "Dammit..."
"What happened to you out there anyway?" Izuku asked, clearly trying to sway you away from your defeat. "You completely freaked out in the mine field and started babbling when you collapsed."
You squinted at him, trying to summon up a memory about those few minutes but managing nothing. "I don't know, but it feels like I just woke up from a nightmare." You mumbled. "I can't shake the feeling something bad is gonna happen."
Izuku frowned, sitting back into his chair and mumbling, easily sounding as though he were chanting instead. You snickered, as it reminded you of his usual, note taking self. "Don't worry about it Izuku. I can at least say I made top 20. You did make it before me, right?"
He looked at you and his eyes widened, suddenly excited more than anything. "Oh! You didn't see did you... I actually made it into 1st!"
"What?! How! I mean, not that I don't believe you could but-"
Izuku laughed, cutting off your sentence. "Its alright (Y/N), I used a trick. I'll tell you about it later."
"What's happening now?" You asked.
"You'll see. For right now, why don't we go see the rest of the class. Uraraka was super worried when you passed out. Didn't wanna leave your side even!"
You giggled, nodding your head. You swung your legs to the floor and stood, wincing as your pushed yourself up on your palms. You looked at them, and frowned at the red burns you'd thus far ignored.
"Are you gonna me okay?" Izuku asked, eyeing your hands as well.
"I'll be okay! My recovery factor will kick in soon. That's the only good part about having shitty pain receptors." You teased. You stood, and patted yourself gently, letting Izuku lead you through the halls. The cement walls made you feel like a football player, jogging out to meet their team for the big game.
Izuku stopped before a door, and knocked twice before opening it slowly. "Hey guys." He said, his voice soft and nervous. "She's awake!"
You stepped in after him, smiling through your flushed face. You only just then realized how embarrassing your downfall was. "Hey guys!" You said weakly, waving your burnt hand.
"(Y/N)!" Uraraka cried, your favorite brunette pouncing on you and wrapping her arms at your throat.
Not too long after, your class surrounded you, commending you on your performance. "You did great out there (Y/N)!" They cooed in their own variants.
"Its a shame you couldn't participate in the horse section. You would've been an invaluable member." Todoroki added, giving you a small grin.
"Thank you Todoroki." You returned his smile and hugged him. "According to Izuku, you're doing pretty well! You're going on to the tournament aren't you?" He nodded.
"Well try your best won't you! I got myself out, so somebody has to fight for me." You cheered, poking him playfully.
"I'll try my best. Though I'm surprised you wouldn't chose Izuku for you champion, or Bakugou."
Your expression fell slightly. "Well, Izuku needs to focus on himself, he doesn't need my honor on his shoulders. And Bakugou... I don't think he's all that concerned with me right now."
Todoroki raised a brow, to which you waved a hand. "Doesn't matter anyway!" You said, trying to mimick a joking tone.
He frowned, and looked to your other classmates whom had dissolved into their own conversations again. Taking your hand, he led you aside and spoke once more. "When was the last time you spoke to him?" He asked.
"Izuku? A few seconds ago!" You laughed, trying to break the tension but failing to against his serious demeanor.
"You know what I mean." He said curtly.
Your smile fell a little, but you resurrected it again and you sighed. "We haven't spoken since we were all together at the beginning of break. I think he's just been busy with training, but I haven't seen him yet today so..."
"Well, if you'd like me to keep you company in his absence, I'd be more than happy."
You shook your head, placing a hand on his shoulder. "No, I'm okay. You focus on the tournament. I'll go get myself a seat so I can watch."
"You're sure?"
"I'm positive."
Todoroki smiled gently and nodded. An announcement over the intercom, though garbled to you, set off the thundering cheers of spectators. You snickered, knowing well that the competitors would soon be preoccupied. Turning, you offered only a small wave to Todorki as you exited the room.
You closed the door behind you, instantly sealing the chatter of your classmates behind you. The silence left was almost eerie. Your grin fell and you let loose a breath you didn't know you were holding. "Guess I'll find my seat..." you muttered, sadness biting your tone.
Your footsteps echoed on the cement, as though to make your emotion more intense or understandable. You wrapped your arms around your torso, clutching your bruised arms in an almost painful way.
"I can't believe I failed so early on... I was so close... I even placed."
"How disappointing... just terrible isn't it?"
You bit down a scream, stumbling over yourself as you spun around. "What the fuck?!"
Your eyes widened, scanning the empty hall for the company in your ear. "What? I thought I heard..."
"You're going insane aren't you loser. Not surprising." His voice, though cruel, made you suddenly hopeful.
Turning back, you'd never known seeing those red eyes would make you so happy. "Kacchan! Long time no see!"
You could feel your mood instantly lift. He looked at you with a cold stare, but you didn't waver. "You kinda disappeared over break? Where did you go?" You asked.
"I was training obviously. No way I'm losing out to a bunch of amateurs like you guys." He sounded frank and demeaning in his tone. Your brow furrowed with confusion, but you still poked at him playfully.
"Kinda cocky aren't you? You know, if I hadn't passed out first round I'd totally be kicking your butt in the finals." Confidence oozed from you miraculously, though you didn't feel so. Bakugou seemed off, but you couldn't tell why.
"Fucking delusional..." he murmured.
Ice shot through your veins. You looked up at Bakugou's eyes with a twitching grin. "Excuse me?"
"You're fucking delusional. You got lucky getting through the relay. You even had to steal my trick to do it. It's a good thing you got disqualified. You would've taken a spot from someone who deserved it."
A knot strained your throat and you but your tongue. "You know Kacchan, you're being exceptionally bitchy. Any reason in particular you feel the need to push my buttons?"
Your heart throbbed in your throat, pain sitting on your chest. Panic seemed to corrupt your thoughts. Kacchan glowered down at you, his crimson eyes were chilled in a bitter nostalgic way. You tried to keep your chin high, meeting his gaze.
"Shut up extra. I have to prep for the tournament." He pushed past you, forcing you to stumble back.
"Um, no?! What the hell Kacchan?! Who shoved a stick up your ass?" You snapped. You grabbed his wrist, yanking him back towards you. "I haven't seen you this whole break and when we finally talk you act like we were never friends! Did I do something to piss you off?!"
"It doesn't matter! Let me go loser!"
"Fuck no! Tell me why the fuck you're suddenly treating me like a plague?"
"Let. Go." His tone was dangerous and growling.
You didn't speak, instead only tightening your grip on him. "Talk." You ordered.
He clamped his teeth together, eyes shrinking as rage boiled in his expression. "GET THE FUCK OFF OF ME YOU BITCH! GO GAWK AT HALF AND HALF FOR ALL I CARE!"
You retracted your grip suddenly, eyes growing with surprise. "What are you talking about?!" You asked.
He didn't respond, instead taking the opportunity to try to storm away. Quickly into action, your feet carried your into a sprint, skidding to a stop before him. You threw out your arms, poorly blocking the hall but still making him stop. "No, Kacchan explain! Why are you avoiding me?!"
He craned his neck, trying to wriggle around you.
"Kacchan!" You yelled. You closed your eyes and rushed him, wrapping your arms around his stomach and pushing him off balance. He crashed back, pulling you down on top of him. Quickly, you shifted your body to metal, wincing as your raw flesh renewed with pain. Kacchan gasped under the new weight, trying to push you off. "Explain and I'll get up."
Bakugou eyed you, your form straddled over him but not seeming to make him uncomfortable. "You didn't fucking need me. You and your new boyfriend can train just fine without me dragging on you." He hissed, though his anger seemed tainted with a bitter jealously.
"Boyfr- Kacchan... I'm single! What're you talking about?!"
"You and Half and Half! I'm not an idiot! I saw you two getting all chummy at the beach! Stalkers my ass, I know you two snuck off!"
You opened your mouth, but genuinely you were speechless. "Kacchan... I... we... we aren't dating! Are you saying you avoided me all because you assumed me and Todoroki were an item? Why would that even matter to you?! Were you... jealous?"
His face erupted in red, and you felt on instinct you should've run, but it wasn't anger that seemed to move him. His hands shook into fist and he clutched his mouth shut. "Kacchan were you jealous?" You repeated, prying harder.
He didn't speak, instead stubbornly remaining mute. You grit your teeth together, growing impatient. Letting it mill in your brain, you felt suddenly enlightened with idea. You leaned forward, closer to his face and asked again, "Kacchan, were you jealous because you thought Todoroki and I were dating?" You changed tactics, making your voice appear sweet and lulling.
Kacchan refused to meet your eyes, but in a way you felt victorious as he wilted in apparent embarrassment. Still, in the back of your head lingered doubt. You sighed, rolling off of him and standing, body returning to normal as you brushed yourself off.
"Kacchan, do you hate me again, or not?" You asked gently, offering a hand to help him to his feet.
He took you hand, sending energy through you and you smiled briefly. "I don't." He said bluntly, still not looking at you.
You nodded. "Okay Kacchan, you can go now. We can talk about this later." You said quietly. "I'm sorry for stopping you."
He seemed like he wanted to respond but he didn't say a word, instead retreating to prepare. You bowed your head, cheeks dusted in red with the thought he was merely jealous by someone stealing your time. It felt oddly good, that he cared that much if it were true.
"Its a fun thought." You whispered to yourself. You looked up, the hall empty with Bakugou's absence but less lonely than before. "I should go find a seat to watch! I'll interrogate him after."
"Talking to yourself dear? Oh no no no Love, insanity ages the mind! Then goes your looks." Behind you, a silky voice took your attention. Your skin crawled with alarm, but you turned slowly.
You spun on your heel, slowly in the case it was just a hero that took you by surprise. Your brow furrowed as before you a woman stood, dressed beautifully in a rich, violet corseted dress. At her feet, her dress seemed to be constantly alive with movement. Atop her head of auburn curls a small crown. Her face was painted with long whiskers and a dotted nose, buck teeth protruding from her top lip.
"I'm sorry... I don't think I've met you before." You said politely. "My name is (Y/N) (L/N), Class 1-A. Are you a hero?"
"Not quite my dear. And I know you quite well. I've been watching you for quite some time." She lulled, smiling softly. "You're quite magnificent."
"I'm glad you think so." You shrunk away, each hair in end. "I'm sorry to cut this short, but I'm expected back in the stands. You should go too! All the best students are about to go."
"None for me. My favorite one is standing right before me."
You took a step back, the distance growing. In a second, you spun and launched into a sprint. 'This girl is bad news...'
"Go my babies! Fetch our guest." She cried.
Faster than you could run, rats swarmed your feet, you shrieked, jumping into the air in fright. You dissolved into the air your clothes falling around you amidst the swarm. "Ah ah ah! Why don't we put away the trick for now dear? It will make it so much easier."
"Like hell I will!" You snapped.
"Very well..." she sighed. From her pocket, she removed a device and swayed it gently in a circle. Once pointed at me, it whirred to life with green light and a shower of sparks launched at you. Touching your flesh, despite being adapted to air, you felt your nerves rock with unimaginable pain and you screamed. Your body reappeared, collapsing into the rats as she threw a blanket over you.
Like a trap, the blanket wrapped around you, leaving only your face like a Russian doll trap. The rats shuffled beneath you, bringing both you and your clothes with the woman. "The doctor has been dying to meet you dear! I can't have you running away now can I?" She giggled. "Lovelies? Take her to the tunnels! It's time to go home!"
The rats obeyed without resistance, but you tried your best to escape. "What did you do to me?!" You cried, immobilized and panicked.
"I merely diffused your powers for a bit. Don't worry, its temporary... for now at least. It's amazing what a little DNA can do for the doctor! Oh my Love is simply amazing!"
"Let me go!" You shouted, the wrap suddenly shrugging over your mouth.
"Hush hush! Don't worry. We'll be there soon. For now... sleep." Her gaze moved to the device again, skimming over the dials.
You jerked around, hoping you could roll away, but the instant she pressed a finger to the same device, you fell instantly, into a blank sleep.
