11. Dennis Garcia

He didn't need to ask if a person was a werewolf, he could tell by their scent, they all could.

He closed the door to his room and started to take his clothes off. He then opened the window to let the cool air of early fall into his room. He started to make his way down the hall to the bathroom when he caught a scent in the air coming from the woods. The scent was like the one he was running away from but there was something different about it. It made him want to go out and investigate what it was. He ran on all four through the woods behind his house, following the scent. He stopped running when he spotted a hammock swaying along with the wind under the shadow of trees. A short leg dangled from it while curly locks of hair swayed in the wind.

"I know you're there." Her voice belonged to the new girl in town, Carolina as he knew her. He crept further into the shadows. "We both know what I am. So, why are you running away?" She sat up and that was all Dennis needed to stay and approach her. "Don't worry, the only weapon I have is a dead bird." She held out a half eaten bird. He sniffed the head before licking Carolina's hand. She held the hammock still for him to jump in. He settled down next to her arm before his bones and skin started changing from an animal to a human form.

"How did you know it was me?" He asked between gasps of air.

"I detected your scent a couple of yards away from where you were hiding." She took her sweater off and gave it to him who immediately covered his genital parts.

"What are you doing here?" He asked as he grabbed a tree branch and pulled on it to make the hammock sway.

"Just enjoying my time out here. You?" She answered as she looked up at the canopy of trees and pine trees.

"Was about to take a shower when I caught your scent and well here I am with you." He looked down at the sweater covering him. "Honestly. I wish I had brought some clothes with me." They both laughed.

"Honestly. I don't mind seeing you naked next to me." She handed him the dead bird. He took the bird from her hand and bit into it, enjoying the raw crunchiness of the chest bones.

"I hate processed meat." She took the bird and took a bite from the left thigh. "I wouldn't mind so much if the meat and milk didn't have so many chemicals." The bird was passed between the two of them until what remained of it where blood and feathers. Like little kids with chocolate in their fingers the two of them licked the blood off of their fingers. She had just finished licking her fingers when Dennis leaned close to her face, and kissed her. She knew the reason for him to kiss her was because wasting fresh blood was wasting real honey away for fake honey.

"What's your name?" He asked as he brushed her hair out of her face.

"Carolina." She answered as the cold wind blew her hair into her face.

"I mean your native." She smiled as she watched the dead bird's feathers fly into the darkness.

"Everyone knows my name yet no one knows it." Dennis was about to ask her what she meant by that but a wolf howl echoed in the distance. The two of them sniffed the scent that the wind carried only to detect a scent of the tribe's princess.

"We better get going." He instructed as he turned into his wolf form and started to cover Carolina's scent with his own. He then got hold of her sweatpants and guided her to the closest human house to hide her in and keep her safe. This was an instinct that had taken over. They reached a small house with no one inside it. He turned back into his human form to cover Carolina while she unlocked the front door. Once she opened the door and was in he was going to leave but she yanked him into the house by his hair and locked the door.

"I'll let you borrow some of my clothes." She looked all the windows and turned the kitchen lights off.

"I'll answer a couple of questions once she's gone." She made her way up the staircase and down the dark halls to her room. She then roamed in her closet to look for clothes for Dennis. The windows and curtains were open,as she approached the window she dropped to the floor. The two of them held their breath as they heard the fading sounds of crunching leaves. None of them broke the silence for an hour to make sure that she was gone.

"Were you executed too?" He finally asked.

"Thrown out newborn." She pulled out a cabinet and took out a worn book.

"What about your parents?" She pulled out a suitcase out of the closet, she placed it on the floor and took out a velvet bag. Dennis took the velvet bag from her hands and unrolled it on the floor. She flipped the book to a page and started chanting in a native language as she burned incense. She performed this ritual to purify every corner of her room and in every corner of the house.

"That's a strong incense." Dennis sneezed as he rolled back the velvet bag and handed it to her.

"I need it this type of spell."

"What's your native name?" He asked.

"Did you see it?" She asked avoiding the question. "Do you think it was her?" He shoved her against the wall and cornered her with his body while holding her arms above her head.

"What is your native name?" He asked while trying to avoid the urge to choke her with one hand.

"Do you want to know?" She asked with a deviant look in her eyes.

"Yes. I want you to tell me what's your name." He could see that she was not going to tell him what her name was.

"Look." He sighted. "My native name is bloody blade. The first thing I ever touched was a dagger. It was foretold that a child of the wolves was going to come to kill the chief and the princess."

"Yeah, yeah, that's why you and your family are on the run from exile." She sat on her bed.

"How did you know?" He asked, few knew about him and his family were on the run.

"You ran in wolf form to safety as soon as you detected the scent of the princess." He took several steps, it was hard to identify the princess' howling and scent without looking at her.

"How did you know...." He trailed off.

"I'll tell you when I find the time suitable." She started to undress in front of him. He shoved her to the floor, pinning her down.

"Tell me who the fuck you are? And how did you know about that warding spell?" She started laughing before throwing him off of her body. She bared her incisors and canine teeth while growling.

"Tell me. Why did you have the urge to protect me from the princess?" She asked with mockery in her tone. He stopped moving trying to think about it. Why did he hid her scent and escorted her to the safety of civilization.

"Tell me about this urge." He sat up and stared at the floor.

"How the urge works. It is strong when any descendant of the chief is in danger. We protect them by instinct." He was about to turn to her but she sat back to back with him.

"If you are the princess, daughter of Wotac. Who's your mother? And how come no one knows about you?" He asked.

"My mother is the beautiful Lilac, the princess that was to marry Wotac against her will." She chuckled.

"It's true she had twins but Wotac wanted a boy and was angry at Lilac and killed the youngest twin. He spared the oldest twin when he took pity in her."

"No one knows they were triplets." Dennis got on his feet and stared at her naked back. She was staring at the moon through the curtains of her bedroom window.

"But he killed the youngest twin." She didn't move from where she was.

"I am the third one. She escaped into the human world to save me but couldn't find a safe place to give birth. She found a little piece of forested ground in North Carolina interstate. And as lucky as that newborn was, she was discovered by a drunk biker who stopped to take a piss and found her."

"What happened after?" He sat next to her.

"Biker is now my adoptive father." Dennis didn't know what to say or do. He sat next to her under the little pools of moonlight that slipped through the curtains.

"Don't imprint on me out of pity." She elbowed his side but it was too late, he had imprinted on her without realizing it.

"I'm sorry." He apologized realizing it was too late and that he had now imprinted on her.

"And not a word of what happened tonight." She threatened him with her hand around his throat and finger nails digging in his flesh.

"Not a word even after i die." He crossed his heart and kissed his fingers.

"Are you ever planning on returning to the tribe?" She asked as she licked the blood off of her fingers.

"Yeah. But I'll do it in the middle of chaos to bring the tribe to its former glory before Wotac." They both heard a car head towards the house.

"I think dad is here." Dennis slipped off the black shirt she had given him earlier. The front door opened and Dennis helped Luna into her pajamas before shoving her into her bed.

"Don't go out." She muttered as she pulled on her blanket. Dennis nodded as he undressed and stuffed his clothes under the bed. He then turned into his wolf form and hid in her closet under the hanging clothes he had pulled on him. Heavy footsteps were heading towards her room. He knew that whoever was coming was a human, he could sense it by its male scent. He could tell it was a human because the house was guarded by ancient spells. And the only way in was if the spell caster allowed the creature in the same way Luna had allowed his entrance. He prepared to sprint out of the closet if whoever was coming was a criminal, when the door opened a big man came in. He made sure the windows were shut, her phone was charging, and left $10 dollars on her nightstand. He stroked her hair before leaving the room and leaving the door ajar. The man went downstairs, turned the TV on and heated some food in the microwave. Luna sat up and looked at the time on her phone.

"You can come out now but you'll have to wait in here." She made her way out of the room and headed downstairs. The TV noise stopped, the lights turn off and her silent steps echoed down the hallway.

"Sorry. It's a habit of dad to knock out while watching TV." She smiled as she watched Dennis turn back into his human form.

"Does he do this all the time?" He asked as he dressed back into Luna's borrowed clothes.

"Yeah."

"Do you think she is killing all those people?" She sat on her bed while watching him dress.

"I don't know but please god let me be wrong but I think she is innocent."

"What if she is the one killing them?"

"Honestly. I don't know so I'll just go to sleep."
