Chapter Thirty-One: Changing for the Best
Play Crimson Waltz - Yukiko Isomura (Piano Cover)
When class 1-A arrives back at the dorms, (Y/N) seems almost out of place. The class hadn't gotten used to the fact that she was gone, but it seems to different to have the (E/C)-eyed girl there again. As soon as 1-A enters the common room, (Y/N)'s classmates surround her.
"We should go hang out in my room (Y/N)!" Yayorozu squeals, clapping her hands together.
"We can study for the next test, if you want." Tsu adds.
Shoto notices his sister's pained face, realizing that the girl might be too scared and horrified because of her experience to 'hangout' with anyone in her class.
He places his hands on her shoulders, "She's going to get some much-needed rest. And (Y/N) has been through a lot, I think it's best to give her time to adjust back into life at UA."
Slowly, the siblings enter the elevator together and head up to (Y/N)'s room. The entire walk is silent, and it's almost like both of them are too scared to speak.
"Thanks Shoto, for y'know, stopping them." (Y/N) finally says.
"It's alright, sis." Shoto replies, "I wanted to talk to you anyhow."
The girl nods and allows her brother inside her room, which she hasn't seen for months. Upon entering, she stares at the room with confusion. Her perfume bottles are sprawled across the floor and her bed sheets seem to be thrown everywhere else. Her closet door is wide open, and there seem to be wet spots, like tears, all over the floor.
"What the hell happened while I was gone?" She mutters.
"I'm sorry."
(Y/N) turns to look at her brother, "What?"
"I came in here and slept in here while you were gone." Shoto starts, "I went crazy. I mean, you had just told me you loved me before you were kidnapped, I blamed myself. I know that I said it back to you, but I couldn't say how I felt about you. I love you, (Y/N)..so much. Even though you don't remember any of our memories together, I still do."
Before he can continue, as tears are running down both of their faces, (Y/N) lunges herself at him and hugs him tightly.
"I love you too, Shoto." She says, "When Kirishima and Katsuki sang that song, I remembered everything, my life in the real world included. I remember when our quirks first manifested, I nearly squeezed you to death because I couldn't control it. I remember when Fuyumi was painting my nails, when I was cooking with Natsuo. When- w-when mom tried to protect me from father."
She pulls away from the hug and stares up at Shoto with a smile, "I'm sorry for everything that my past self did, but now I'm a different person. I'm going to make everything right again, no matter what I half to do. I was such a jerk."
Shoto chuckles, letting a tear or two fall, "It's okay, (Y/N). The class already knows that you're better now, there's no need to-"
"No! I'm going to do my best to make sure that they forgive me. I hurt everyone in our class multiple times before I changed into the real-life me. I want to make it up to them. I'm going to be better."
"Alright then, I'll help you."
(Y/N) chuckles, "Well, you're helping me clean up this mess first."
"Fine."
So the siblings spend an hour or two cleaning (Y/N)'s room. When they're done, Shoto says goodnight and exits it, leaving his sister to lie down on her bed. As she lays there, her minds wanders to what she wants to do next. What's a good thing she can do for her family and classmates after everything that's happened? Is there even anything she can do to truly earn their trust again?
That's when an idea comes to her, and she falls asleep with a wide smile spreading from ear to ear.
The next morning, (Y/N) wakes up bright and early. She heads down to the common room. Thankfully, none of her classmates are awake yet, so she gets the kitchen all to herself. The (E/C)-eyed girl picks out the traditional waffle-maker and pancake pans, then she makes the batter. When the batter is finished, (Y/N) hears a loud pair of yawns behind her, she turns to see Katsuki and Kirishima with their pajamas still on.
"(Y/N), what the hell are you doing up so early?" Katsuki asks, rubbing the sleep from his eyes.
"Sorry, did I wake you?" She replies, "I wanted to make some pancakes and waffles for everyone, but since I'm not a good cook, I wanted to get some practice in beforehand. Y'know, just in case."
"Then we'll help you!" Kirishima responds, smiling.
"Okay, let's get started."
The three friends make pancakes and waffles together, and after a few trial runs, the friends finally agree on a certain batter. So they make the pancakes and waffles out of that batter, just as their other classmates start waking up and coming downstairs.
"Wow, what's that smell?" Midoryia mutters, yawning.
He heads down to the common room, following the amazing scent, and when he arrives he can hear a familiar sound of laughing. (Y/N)'s laughter. He missed the sound of it, so much. The (H/C)-haired girl hasn't laughed like this since the two were kids. He turns the corner to see the familiar happy smile that young (Y/N) always had as kids, the one that made Midoryia feel like he meant something. Secretly, he fell in love with her. Not the kind of love that he wants to kiss her and hug her tighter than anyone else, the kind of love where he just wants to see her happy. Of course, Midoryia does love her more than a friend, but he'd rather see her happy than as a girlfriend. And either way, he can see the sparkle in her eyes when she looks at Katsuki and Kirishima. The green-haired boy smiles to himself, and approaches the kitchen.
"Oh, Izu!" (Y/N) squeals, leaving Katsuki to catch the spoon she knocked over, "I wanted to talk to you!"
Midoryia's eyes widen at the sound of the old nickname. She only used it in grade school. Once the incident happened, (Y/N) stopped calling him Izu and stuck with Midoryia or the occasional idiot.
He smiles, "Of course."
The two friends head down the hallway for a bit, until the (H/C)-haired girl finally turns around, "So, I wanted to say I'm sorry for everything. I remember everything about my life now, and I know I've hurt you so many times. Especially in grade school, when you and Katsuki got into fights and I-I did nothing. I'm sorry for the names I called you, if I had've known that I was being like Katsuki, I would have stopped..but I was blinded by rage because of my father." She looks up at Midoryia, with tears in her eyes, "Please, forgive me."
Midoryia is the next person to cry, "Of course I forgive you! Anything you've done is in the past now, I don't have a grudge against you, you of all people should know that." He hugs her tightly, and the girl barries her head in his collarbone.
When the two friends pull away from the hug, they smile at each other, wiping away their tears, and head back to their group of classmates. (Y/N) watches as Katsuki and Kirishima place the plates of waffles and pancakes, each person who tastes them soon has a bright smile and a sparkle in their eyes, which makes (Y/N)'s heart happy, and she feels full.
"So Bakugo, what made you be a gentleman for today?" Yayorozu asks, snickering.
"Oi, this wasn't my idea." Katsuki replies.
"Then who's was it?" Kaminari asks, stuffing his face.
Kirishima smiles, turning towards where Midoryia and (Y/N) stand, "It was hers."
The rest of class 1-A turn to the top third hero, and erupt into cheers, "Thanks (Y/N)!"
The (E/C)-eyed girl blushes, "N-No problem."
Soon enough, all of the class is sitting together and eating the pancakes and waffles while laughing. They discuss what classes might be for the day, but a question dawns on Kirishima.
"So (Y/N), why'd you want to make waffles and pancakes for us today?" He asks.
The (H/C)-haired girl freezes, and takes a breath, "Well, I uh- after you and Katsuki were singing the song from our childhood, it gave me my memories back. I remember being such a jerk to all of you, and I want to make it right. I'm going to try my best to make sure that you all trust me again, and I'll be better."
She lets a single tear fall from her eye before she hiccups, "I just want you to know that I'll be here, now and forever. Thank you, for saving me, I'll promise to pay you all back."
Class 1-A is silent for a moment, until Uraraka speaks up, "You don't have to pay us back, (Y/N). We saved you because that's what heroes do, and we forgave you a while ago for everything that's happened in the past."
But the (H/C)-haired girl shakes her head, hiccuping once more, "No. I didn't know what I even did then, and now I feel the need to pay you all back for the horrible memories I have."
Midoryia sighs, "That's stubborn (Y/N) for ya."
Finally, the (E/C)-eyed girl smiles and lets out a giggle.
"Okay class, we should be heading to UA now!" Iida yells, so class 1-A agrees and heads towards the hero school.
