Chapter 18
"You smell like whiskey and bad choices," Cyrus announced. Theo slowly peeled his eyes open and squinted at the sunlight illuminated room. He was utterly exhausted and, judging by the headache that cut into his skull, a little hungover from too much whiskey last night. Not that he regretted drinking it. He'd needed every drop.
Cyrus sat on the edge of the bed, tying his boots. It was another thing Theo found interesting. For someone who was never out in the woods, Cyrus wore hiking boots quite a bit.
"How was the stakeout?" He asked gently. Theo hardly ever drank, so if he had downed enough liquor to smell like it, something must have gone down.
"Utterly miserable," Theo said, his voice as scraped raw as he felt. Cyrus smiled at him.
"What at work isn't?" The smile alone nearly shattered Theo's heart. Cyrus had no idea what had gone down. He had no idea yet that Marcus was dead. Theo had to tell him; he had to tell him right there. But the words stayed stuck in his throat as Cyrus stood and winked at him.
"I gotta go to the Headquarters for a bit," He said. "You good here?" Theo nodded, and Cyrus smiled at him again before walking out. The second the door closed, Theo buried his face in a pillow. Later. He'd tell Cyrus everything later, after he could face it himself.

Cyrus was expecting to have a calm morning meeting after Kramer called him and said they had to meet. Instead, he was greeted by a gang on a rampage. Felicia was crying, Kramer and Martin were arguing, and Mills was quietly reloading his gun's magazines. Benny stood silently at the bar, watching everyone. Naturally, Cyrus went to him first.
"What the hell is going on?" He asked, taking in the chaos. "And where's Marcus?" Benny stared at him for a moment.
"You need to see something," He said vaguely.
They went into Cyrus's office, and Benny sat him in front of a laptop, a video queued up onto it.
"Somebody from Oak's gang dropped this off to Kramer this morning," Benny explained. He hesitated, not sure if he should tell Cyrus what to expect or not. He voted for silence and hit play.
Cyrus watched intently. The video was grainy, but it was of an alley. Marcus stood at one end, and Cyrus watched as he raised a gun, only to be shot and fall. The video almost seemed to slow as Marcus fell, and then another man appeared on the screen, running over and checking for a pulse. He ran away, and Cyrus stopped the video.
"Marcus is dead," Benny said. "The others are in an uproar. They want to kill the Rebels for it. They think they sent the video to mock us."
"And what do you think, Benny?" Cyrus whispered. He knew Oak's gang hadn't killed Marcus. He recognized the man in the video, and he was no gangster.
"I think they're too stupid to do that. And you and I both know who really killed him." Cyrus nodded and frowned at the screen. No one Theo had looked awful this morning. He must've known that Spiro had killed Marcus.
But why hadn't Theo told him?
"It's weird though," Benny admitted. "I mean, I met Spiro at the Police Ball. He doesn't seem like the type of guy who'd have what it takes to shoot somebody."
"He's not," Cyrus agreed. Theo had always said Spiro was more of a follower. He was shrimpy, and a little spineless. He wouldn't have pulled the trigger.
Not unless someone told him too.
Cyrus zoomed in on the image of Spiro. It was a side view of his face, but he centered in on the cop's ear. Something bulky and shiny had caught the camera just right, and it shone.
"That look like an earpiece to you?" Cyrus muttered.
"Yes it does," Benny agreed.
"Tell the others it wasn't the Rebels," Cyrus ordered. "I'll take care of this one."
"I thought we didn't hurt cops."
"I'm not going to." Cyrus's face went cold. "I'm just going to find out what the hell happened."
Spiro was incapable of shooting someone without an order. He just didn't have the guts for it. But apparently, Theo had the guts to order it. But Theo knew who Marcus was. Knew he was an ally and a friend. Why the hell would Theo order him dead? Doubt had been planted in Cyrus's mind, and he hated himself for it, but he was mad. He had trusted Theo, and in return, he had ordered for Marcus to be killed. An innocent man was dead, and that was just unforgivable. Rage clouded Cyrus's mind until he wasn't sure what he was thinking anymore. The image of Marcus falling to the ground and being left for dead replayed in his head. Every member of the Hunters was like family to him, and so was Theo. But family wasn't supposed to turn on each other, either.

Theo was sitting at the kitchen table when the door slammed open, and Cyrus stormed in, slamming the door behind him with just as much force as he had opened it with. He walked over to Theo, radiating cool rage, and gave him the coldest look Theo had ever seen on his husband's face.
"What-" Theo started.
"Why did you order Spiro to kill Marcus?" Cyrus demanded. Theo's eyes widened.
"Cyrus, I can explain that-"
"Why did you get Marcus killed?" He repeated, angrier than the last time. "He was an innocent man-"
"Bullshit," Theo interrupted. "I told Spiro to kill him because he was a traitor!" Cyrus stared at him.
"That's impossible."
"No it's not, I heard it all at the stupid meeting. He's been ratting you out to Oak's gang, he was their spy!" Cyrus turned away from him, shaking his head.
"You have no idea what you're talking about. You don't understand-"
"I was there! What could I possibly not understand about this? Why would I lie?" Cyrus turned back, struggling for words.
"You got Marcus killed! I thought cops weren't supposed to kill people, and I never thought you'd be the one to do it." Theo winced, but his rage was just as red hot as Cyrus's now. There was no backing down.
"He was going to kill you!" Theo yelled.
"Marcus would never do that!"
"He would too! He had it all worked out with the Rebels! He was going to kill you! I got him shot to protect you!"
"I know the people I let into the Hunters, Theo, and Marcus was not capable of killing me. He was a good man, and now he's DEAD BECAUSE OF YOU AND YOUR STUPIDITY!"
"He's dead BECAUSE HE WAS A LIAR. Maybe you just didn't know him as well as you think he did, because he was a traitorous bastard who had every intention of killing you and taking down EVERYTHING! You probably didn't know the real him at all!" Enraged, Cyrus drew his gun, pointing it at Theo's face.
"Or maybe you're the one I don't really know." Theo froze. In all the years he had known Cyrus, after everything they had done and gone through, he had never pointed a weapon at him. He had never threatened him. He had never doubted him.
"You don't believe me," Theo said, the realization striking him like a slap to the face. "You don't trust me on this."
"No. I don't," Cyrus said bluntly. "Marcus was a good man." Theo gaped at him.
"After everything, Cyrus, everything, I have not lied to you once. I have trusted you with my entire life, and now you're saying that you don't trust me when I say Marcus was going to kill you?" They stared at each other, neither willing to budge. Theo could practically see the trust between them, some wavering, fragile line that would make or break by whatever happened next.
"You don't know what was going down at that meeting. He didn't deserve to die."
"It was you or him." Theo looked at the gun. "Get that thing out of my face right now, Cyrus." But Cyrus didn't move. He knew Marcus hadn't betrayed him, but the fact that Theo was trying to spin it that way, the fact that Theo had gotten one of his Hunters, one of friends, killed— Well, that was just too much doubt for him to not act on it.
"What else aren't you telling me?" Cyrus demanded. He had gone this far already, and the suspicion was there. He figured he might as well just dive off the rest of the deep end; there was no way Theo could get more pissed at him than he already was. "You didn't tell me Marcus was killed."
"I was going to-"
"But you didn't." He snapped, his hand tightening around the gun. "How do you expect me to trust you when you don't tell me something like that?"
"I didn't have the chance to tell you! I could barely stomach it myself! I was going to tell you today."
"Maybe you just couldn't stomach it because you know he was innocent."
"I couldn't stomach it because I didn't want to see the look on your face when you found out you'd been betrayed." Theo stared at him, not believing what he was hearing, not believing what he was seeing. Why didn't Cyrus just lower the gun? Why didn't he just trust him like he always had? Didn't he trust him at all? Didn't he know that Theo would never intentionally do something to hurt him? "You really don't trust me, do you?"
"Right now? No." It was like a twisting knife in Theo's heart. Trust. Wasn't that the whole point of it all? He loved Cyrus. He trusted Cyrus, and he expected that when Cyrus said he loved him, that it meant that he trusted him in return. The two were one and the same in his mind. How could you have a relationship without trust? What was the point of it all if that wasn't there? Especially in a relationship like theirs. Trust was the strongest thing between them, it always had been. And yet, just like that, Cyrus no longer trusted him.
Just like that, the wavering line of trust snapped.
"Get out," Theo whispered, his voice shaking as he verged on losing what little control he had left.
"What?" Cyrus's angry face faltered.
"If you don't fucking trust me after all we've been through, then I don't want to look at you anymore," Theo spat. He pushed the gun away from his face, and Cyrus stumbled back like he'd been slapped. There was just something about the pain on Theo's face that was twisting and shredding at his heart. "Get. Out."
"The-"
"GET OUT!" Cyrus noted the rest of the hurt on his husband's face then. The utter pain of betrayal. His fear of not being trusted finally realized. Cyrus let himself be shoved out of the apartment. He let Theo slam the door in his face. And he stood in the hallway, shocked, as he realized his mistake. What the hell had he done? He and Theo rarely fought, but this fight felt different, and he wasn't even sure which parts were his fault or not anymore. Cyrus dropped the gun to the floor, guilt crashing down on him as he leaned against the closed door and sank down. He swore he heard Theo crying on the other side.
