How I make Book Covers w/Phone Apps
Alright making covers isn't easy and I do not draw mine. All my covers are photoshopped by me believe it or not. But I have gotten better and better at using it. I'll show you guys how I made this:
So let's get started! And since Wattpad has a 20 picture limit..this will get interested..
I would like to clear something up. I had to pay for SuperimposeX and features in UnderInk Typography and features in Photo. By on my laptop, I use Fotor Photo Editor. But I do not use Fotor for this cover since it did not need it. I used Fotor for If Only's cover and Legends Never Fade's cover if you wonder what it can do. And I am working on the Dialogue and action how to's for you all, just taking some time. But I thought this would be a cool behind the scenes thing for you all.
Making the Background
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
First thing I do is get onto SuperimposeX and put down a black canvas. The black canvas is something you have to make, it is scaled to fit the size for Wattpad Covers. I hit the pulse sign on the bottom (Add Layer) to put it on there. Hitting Add Layer again, while I have a mask of this picture in my masked library, but I'll show how I mask it even though that takes forever. But I find the picture I want in my photo library and add it in. Then on the bottom, there is a Mask section.
Hitting the blue icon on the top, it makes it so you can only see that layer. The red in the picture is my mask work. Then hit that blue icon at the top to disable it. Than I go to the filters section and pick a filter that I like of Ty only. The last panel is one I added in another layer of stars, there are hard to see now, but they'll stand out more later.
I added in two more layers, one of them is invisible just so you all just see the difference when I show it with is in the second panel. But I had filtered them and blended them already. I just forget to take screenshots of them. But the last panel is me adding in another layer.
The picture I added I made it fit to base which makes it so the picture fits to the very first layer which is that black canvas we started out with. But the first panel I am blending it in right I lowered it's opacity so you could only see what I wanted you to see which are the stars. The second panel I selected the Ty only layer and made it so I can cast his shadow since I forgot to do that. The last panel, I added in another layer. It is a picture from my masked library that I made previously and I just liked it so I use it often as a blender or a background. Which I'm sure that it is the background in LifeLine's cover.
I moved that picture underneath Ty's layer and blended it into the background. Next panel, I added in another picture, forgot which, but I stacked that layer ontop and blended it all in in soft light mode. Then after a few fixes, I saved the blended image.
Next is Photo Wizard! I don't really use Photo Wizard much for this cover, I use it a lot more for my others, but that is a photo editor, it sharpens, contrasts, adds textures, and much more. But I added in a grease stain texture and hit the check mark at the top.
Moving over to filters, I sharpen up the photo and saved it.
Putting In Text
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
UnderInk is a great text editor, it costs money to 3D text, fonts, and undo erase, but it is a great app to use. I use to use it a lot, I use it every now and than.
UnderInk is the app that has the Wattpad Cover Size built in. But I copied the text that I use on the previous The Ender Heir's cover since I like it a lot. But each text had to be saved apart.
In order for me to be able to ONLY edit the Heir text, I had to save the picture with Ender text only on it and use that. But I erased parts of the Heir text and the Second panel it the result and the third Panel is the result another I put The in.
Now onto Phonto! Phonto is another text editor I use! But it is more detailed in what it offered in UnderInk. While Phonto does have a erase feature, it frankly sucks. But I spaced out the letters and moved the text to the bottom.
After adding in a few more text boxes, I was done. And while I did not take a picture of it, I went into my photo library since UnderInk has a habit of putting in white lines on the sides of the picture, I edited them out in the photo library and the second panel is the result.
Watermark
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
eZy Watermark is a free app, but in order to use more of its features, you have to pay for them. But I only use the stickers which is free. On all my covers, I use the fire sticker because I like it. But what the arrows are pointing to is the opacity option. Then hit the check mark and it will bring you to the last panel and save it into Library.
Almost hit the photo limit!
But I hope you liked that little sneak peek into how I make covers. Some covers need more time than others and it takes me about 4 hours to make a cover. But I hope you enjoyed!
Next chapters will be either about dialogue or writing action scenes!
