Edit

The first time Alex thought him up, it was when he had lost his stuffed toy for the first time. The little boy was only five then, so innocent, so young. He had no idea, and no care about the horrors of the cruel world. All he feared was never being able to find his stuffed snake. The small child had decided that his name was Mikey, so that's what he went by. Typically, in his world, they had no name until a child decided they needed a friend and named them themselves. Some, sadly, are never named. Nameless. Unknown.
~~~~~~~
It didn't take long before that stuffed snake was found, but Mikey had been called, so he would stay. He would stay for the innocent, pure child that had yet to know what the world was like.
~~~~~~~
Throughout the next few years, nothing major truly happened, until the little boy turned ten.
~~~~~~~
The day Alex's father finally came home was one of the worst things that ever happened. Alex was afraid of him, and Mikey didn't understand why.The child was now curled up on his bed, tears streaming down his face like a waterfall as his ears heard the talking, coming from downstairs. Mikey sat next to him on the bed, whispering soothing words over and over as he tried to distract him from his fear. It was all he could do at this point, and he prayed that Alex would calm down and his terror would not get worse. He was supposed to bring joy to a child's life, but right now? All he could do was wait, and that terrified him. He was failing at his job. He was failing his kid.
It was silent for a while, and Alex's sniffles slowly faded as it became quiet downstairs. The young boy eventually looked up and murmured, "Why did he come home so soon..?"
Mikey didn't have an answer.
~~~~~~~
It wasn't until Alex was fifteen that Mikey could feel it.

He was fading.
~~~~~~~
Fading was when he was no longer needed. It happened to everyone eventually. It was all apart of them growing up and learning to cope on their own. This, however, didn't mean that it didn't hurt.
No, it was an excruciating pain that felt like being shot through the stomach. Like he was slowly being torn apart. He could feel him body fading. He could feel the boy growing up, and it hurt.
That was the problem of his job, along with so many others. You get so attached, even though you know you have to leave eventually. The closer you are, the more it hurts.
He was transparent now, and when he called out, there was only a slight glance in his general direction before Alex looked away.
Mikey was fading away by the second, and it would only get worst.
He would be gone by the end of the day.
~~~~~~~
Alex, the boy who did sports yet seemed to smart for his age, too knowing of everything, was forgetting him. Alex, the boy who had just started to learn the true cruelty of the world was growing up. It was beautiful, yet heartbreaking to watch.

He knew this boy would go on to do great things. He cared, and he fought for what he believed in with everything he had, and that was certainly an asset for later in life.

Mikey was proud. Proud of his boy growing up.

As he felt himself fading, he raised a hand in a slight wave, knowing the teen wouldn't see it.

A second later, he was gone.
