Chapter 31
Stormy Sky kept being nudged in his sleep. He let out a groan and buried himself deeper in his mother's fur. The journey to the Pack of the Falling Stars had been long and exhausting. Now, he wanted nothing more than to get some sleep in this strange place. However, the nudging continued.
"Stormy Sky, wake up," came the soft and gentle words of his mother.
Stormy Sky lifted his head. It was still nighttime out, and the moon casted a glow over the entire forest. There was a silhouette near the entrance of the den. Though half-awake, Stormy Sky found himself moving toward the entrance with his mother. There was indeed a wolf at the entrance, a wolf whom Stormy Sky had only seen briefly during the day but barely got to say a word too.
In many ways, Stormy Sky thought he looked like his father as he observed the male wolf sitting outside the den. His eyes immediately fell to the lightning strike on Feather Wings' foot, the same mark that he had on his chest. The realization was starting to set in that this was real, that this was his father, and he was finally able to meet him.
"Sorry, I finally managed to slip away," Feather Wings said to Gentle Breeze. Suddenly, the attention was turned onto Stormy Sky. His father bent down and nuzzled his head against Stormy Sky. It frightened Stormy Sky at first, like it was a stranger's touch, but eventually, he settled into it.
"It's so great to finally meet you," Feather Wings said to his son. "We have the same mark, see?" he asked, turning to show his foot. "That's a very special mark for a very special wolf."
"You think so?" Stormy Sky asked.
Feather Wings nodded. Then, he looked up at Gentle Breeze.
"I'm sorry. I'm sorry that I became mates with Shining River and fathered those pups and--"
"It doesn't matter. You did what you had to in order to keep this quiet. I wish your sacrifice hadn't been in vain, but I'm glad we're reunited," Gentle Breeze said. Stormy Sky turned his head, noticing how lovingly his parents stared into each others' eyes. He had heard so much from his mother about Feather Wings, and now he finally got to meet the wolf he had only known from his mother's memory.
"I already spoke to Shining River. We're no longer mates," Feather Wings said. "She made that clear before I could even break things off. So, will you be my mate again? I'll face the same consequences as you. You don't need to protect me anymore."
"Of course," Gentle Breeze said.
"Come here," Feather Wings said to his son. Stormy Sky scooted forward and smiled as his mother and father gentle pressed their snouts against him. This used to be something that he only dreamed about, but not it was his reality. He had a family at last, and though it necessarily wasn't the circumstances he expected, he hoped they would stay together for a long time and would never be separated again.
"How long do you think they'll quarantine us like this?" Gentle Breeze asked.
"I can't say. Hopefully not for more than a couple days. I don't know if they'll send you back to the omega den or not, especially since Lily Petal is so unpredictable these days..."
"How is your sister?" Gentle Breeze asked.
As they spoke to each other, Stormy Sky felt his eyes drooping with tiredness. He began to slouch against his father, and though his parents quietly laughed at his tiredness, he grinned when he felt his father lick the top of his forehead. His father's scent was new, but it didn't unfamiliar unlike the rest of the pack. It felt nostalgic in a way.
"We should head back in and rest then," Gentle Breeze said. She nudged Stormy Sky awake with her paw. He lifted his head up and opened his eyes, finding his father staring down and smiling at him.
"I'll visit again tomorrow," Feather Wings promised.
"We'll see you then," Gentle Breeze said. She guided Stormy Sky back inside the den. As Stormy Sky nestled close to his mother once more, she quietly asked him, "How do you like your father?"
"I like him a lot. Will we get to stay with him now?" Stormy Sky asked.
"Yes," Gentle Breeze said. "Now get some sleep."
Stormy Sky's eyes drooped once more, and though the unfamiliarity of this den and the wolves in it made it a little unnerving to sleep, he slowly felt himself drifting off into a slumber once again.
The next morning, Stormy Sky got to eat fresh prey from the pack for the first time. He shared some with the brothers, though they were mostly busy catching up with their sister who had miraculously returned from the dead. So Stormy Sky kept close to his mother, even if he was growing bored being contained inside this small den.
"Can I go outside?" he asked.
Gentle Breeze frowned. "Well, just at the entrance. No straying around. We're not supposed to leave the den yet, you know."
Stormy Sky nodded and sat outside in the sunlight out front of the den. Though the wolves in this den were meant to be constrained to the den, he watched many come in and out, especially as family members visited. He kept his eyes out for his father, hoping Feather Wings would visit soon. Though he had just met his father the day before, Stormy Sky could not wait to catch up again.
Out of the corner of his eye, he saw two wolves around the same age, if not a little younger than him, approach. He figured they must be training just like Golden Flower was. One was dark gray, and the other was light gray. With the way they interacted, Stormy Sky could tell easily the two were siblings.
"So you're Gentle Breeze's pup?" the sister, the light gray one, asked.
Stormy Sky glanced back into the den, wondering if he should escape back inside, but the two seemed bent on talking, so he slowly nodded his head. The brother, the one with the dark gray pelt, was glaring almost at the lightning mark on his chest.
"Don't think you can come here and claim yourself as a member of this pack," the dark gray one growled.
"But I have two parents who are members of the pack," Stormy Sky argued, now realizing that these two weren't here to make friends.
"But you have omega blood," the light gray one growled.
"Who even are you two? Why do you care?" Stormy Sky asked. His mother had warned him that the pack might not take lightly to him, but so far, no one had said a word about his existence until these two had shown up.
"I'm Strong Boulder, and this is my sister, Tall Willow. Shining River is our mother," the dark gray one said.
Suddenly, the clocks spun in Stormy Sky's head. "You two are my half-siblings," he realized.
"Are not! We're not your siblings," Tall Willow complained.
"We may share the same father, and you might have his mark, but you still have dirty omega blood. Just remember that," Strong Boulder growled.
For the most part, Stormy Sky felt safe and welcomed here, but now he was beginning to fear it was a mistake. He found himself growling at the two, wondering why it was they had to come here and ask for a fight. Before he could lash out at them, however, Golden Flower bounded out of the den.
"You two get out of here!" she snarled.
"Didn't they say family was allowed to visit?" Strong Boulder asked. "I also don't take orders from a dog."
Golden Flower raised her paw, as if to smack him, and then he and his sister took off. "STAY AWAY!" she growled as the siblings took off. Then, she turned to Stormy Sky. "Are you okay? Don't concern yourselves with those two. They're nasty, and I'm sure they're not thrilled that Feather Wings just left their mother for yours."
"Thanks," Stormy Sky said. "Are they always that nasty?"
"Pretty much. And unfortunately, we'll all have to share the same den with them again soon. I used to scare them a little more when they didn't know my identity, but now Strong Boulder seems content on making fun of me too. Luckily, I'm still bigger than them though. Hey, are you all right?"
Stormy Sky realized he was shaking slightly.
"Yeah. Sorry. I didn't know how it would feel to hear those words, even though I knew they were coming," he admitted.
"Why don't we go back inside, then? I can teach some moves to you and my brothers. Plus, I heard Gentle Breeze saying that your father plans to visit later."
"Okay. Sounds good," Stormy Sky said, following Golden Flower back inside the den. Though he had only met her the day before, he found that she had a gentle face and joyful disposition. He was starting to wish he had met her the same time as her brothers.
