Utter Nightmare

After lunch my entire day went by insanely fast, and once again that was just because of Nate. I was still extremely happy because of his confession from lunch, and the only thing I could think about the majority of the day was telling my mom when I got home. Primus knows that woman--sick or not--was going to go absolutely crazy when I told her about the day's events. I really just couldn't wait to see the look on her face when I told her.

School ended about five minutes ago, and I was now making my way out of the school. Nate had bid me a goodbye a couple of minutes ago. Apparently he had a dentist appointment he needed to get to, so I let him go. I skipped out of the school doors and hurried over to my dad who was parked at the curb like he normally was. The passenger's door opened almost instantly and I hopped in, throwing my belongings to the floor.

"Hi, daddy," I greeted him with a smile.

He gave me an odd look before pulling onto the road. "Why are you so happy?"

"I can't tell you," I snickered.

"Oh? And why is that?"

"Because it's a secret, duh. How was work?"

"It was okay, busy as usual. I may have to go to Europe in a couple of days," he informed me.

I chuckled. "Why?"

"Humans are impeccably stupid nowadays. We're being sent to take care of an issue," he chuckled. At least he was finally beginning to realize humanity's growing stupidity. It was only growing worse as the years passed.

"Have you talked to mom today?" I questioned.

He nodded. "She was headed to sleep when I called her earlier."

"Do you think she's awake?"

"She may be, but I can't be too sure. Why are you wondering?" he asked.

I shrugged. "I just need to have a chat with her is all."

"Is it about this secret?" he smirked.

"Yes, actually."

"I see where I stand in this relationship," he teased. All I could do was laugh at him. Playful Ironhide is what I lived for. I loved it when my dad was playful with me like this. It was much better than him yelling at me all the time.

A couple more minutes passed before we finally got home. Dad parked beside my mom's car and I wasted no time in getting out of his cabin. I was more anxious now than I was at school to tell my mom the news, but it was probably because I was now at home.

I burst through the front door and threw my stuff down before heading up the stairs. Soon enough I came to my mom and dad's room and opened the door. My mom was sitting on the king-sized bed with the same mug from this morning in her hands. The sound of the door shutting caught her attention and she looked up at me with a smile on her face.

"Hey, Kay. What's up?" she greeted me, sitting the mug down on her bedside table.

I walked over to the bed and sat down across from her. She looked a bit better than she did this morning, but just a bit. She still looked rather ill.

"Nothing," I answered. "How are you doing? Are you feeling better?"

She shrugged. "It's not that I'm feeling bad. I just feel weird."

Before I could answer the bedroom door opened again. My dad's holoform stood in the door way looking at the both of us.

"Are you feeling better, Lea?" he asked her.

"Uh, yeah. I am. Thank you," she whispered, looking down at the comforter. Something was a bit off with her; I could sense it. I couldn't tell what exactly it was, but I didn't think it was anything good.

My dad gave her a skeptical look before shutting the bedroom door. I looked back at my mom who was already looking at me, a curious expression on her pale face.

"You seem happier. Why is that?" she inquired, studying my face. I smiled just thinking about the reason.

"Nate told me he liked me today, and I kind of told him I liked him too," I said quietly.

"It's about time," she chuckled. "I'm so happy for you, Kaelyn."

She was being sincere, but she wasn't as enthusiastic about it as I thought she would be. Normally whenever something good happened she turned into the happiest person in the world. At the time I was rather young, but I still remember her having the flu when Adalyn told her she was pregnant. Despite her ailment, she was jumping up and down and screaming with happiness. She must have been feeling really bad if this wasn't the case.

"Are you sure you're feeling okay, mom?" I asked, worry very evident in my tone.

She rubbed her chest and took a deep breath. "Yeah. It's just some chest pain, Kay. No need to worry, babe."

"Only if you're sure?"

"Yeah," she smiled. "Give me some details. Like, what exactly happened?"

"He just was like 'I like you, Kaelyn. I like you a lot.' and I just sat there in silence contemplating my entire life. Then he was like 'Feel free to say something before I throw up.' and then I told him I liked him too. It was like I had no control over the words," I explained to her.

She laughed. "My girl is growing up. I'm so proud of you."

"Thank you, momma."

The two of us sat in silence for a few seconds until she very roughly grabbed a hold of my good wrist. I looked up at her and she did not look good at all.

"Kaelyn, sweetie," she whispered. She was having a bit of trouble trying to breathe and I was about to lose my shit. What the actual fuck was going on right now?

"What, mom? What's wrong?" I asked frantically as I moved closer to her.

"Please, get your dad." That was the only thing she was able to say before she fell back onto the bed.

My eyes widened in horror and I could feel the tears burning in my eyes. I moved closer to her, patting her face in an attempt to get her to wake up, but she wouldn't. This could not be happening to me right now. Today was a good day, yet it turned into this--a complete and utter nightmare.

"Mom, please wake up," I pleaded as I patted her face. Her skin was very warm, much warmer than it should have been and I found myself freaking out even more. Then I remembered what she wanted me to do in the first place.

"Daddy!" I screamed, not caring how loud I was being. The tears streamed down my face as I attempted to wake my mom up with no such luck. "Mommy, please wake up."

The sound of loud footsteps could be heard in the hallway, and the bedroom door burst open immediately. I didn't need to turn around to know that it was my father.

"Kaelyn, what's wro-"

I cut him off. "She won't wake up. She told me to get you and then she just passed out. She won't wake up, why won't she wake up?" I screamed. I was not only upset, but I was also frustrated with the fact that I couldn't wake my mom up.

All of a sudden there was an arm being wrapped around my body to pull me away from my mom. I only cried harder. My dad was now sitting on the bed beside her, studying her face. Without a word he scooped her up into his arms and looked at me. I could tell he was extremely worried about her, but he was hiding it for my sake. He gestured me out the door and I wasted no time in running out. I assumed he wanted me to head to his alternate mode, so I did that as well, opening the passenger's side door and hopping in. My dad ran out of the house seconds later, cradling my mom's small body against his. He placed her in the backseat of his cabin and hopped in the driver's seat.

"What do you mean you're in New Jersey?" my dad spat. He must have been talking to Ratchet through the com-link, so I decided to patch in.

"I'm assisting some of the base workers up here. What is going on, Ironhide?" Ratchet responded as my dad pulled out of the driveway. He sped down the road at a very illegal speed, but I didn't care and I doubted he did either.

"There's something wrong with Azalea, and I need your assistance," my dad grumbled.

"I will try to be there as soon as I can. For the time being get her to a hospital. A human doctor will have to suffice until I arrive. I must go now, Ironhide. Best of luck," Ratchet replied before the line went dead.

"Slaggit," my dad yelled, startling me slightly. I jumped in my seat and my dad turned to look at me, his eyes softening. "I'm sorry for scaring you."

I just sniffed and hugged my knees to my chest. "It's okay."

All I wanted was for my mom to be okay. This was definitely not how this day was supposed to turn out.
