Theory III

Theory III - Denial of Hivewing origin

The following work will contain minor information / spoilers in volume XI of the series

"Wings of Fire"

On the twenty-sixth of June 2018, Volume XI of the series "Wings of Fire" by Tui T Sutherland was released. After the events of series I and II were over, it was time to start something new (Despite leaving a series of legends with one book only.) With the volume "The Lost Continent" we got new protagonists, storyline, antagonists and of course ... new dragons.

Personally, I was very skeptical about the concept of new races and continents but reading this volume I changed my mind a bit.

The plot is 4/10 (Again the recital of the exception to the principle of the chosen one, the bad regime and even another underground organization fighting the usurper)The same idea for the continent and races 6/10 (The tribes themselves could have some more sense and be more justified than those in Pyrrhia)Same breed: HiveWings (6/10) Silkwings (2/10) LeafWings 8.5 / 10

After this long and boring short time it is time to finally go to theory:

In the New Continent series three new tribes / dragon races are presented: Leafwings, Hivewings and Silkwings. They were designed by indispensable Joy Ang and although they look great they do not have much logic in them. Dragons in Pyrrhii, whose  evolution have already devoted a lot of small discussions(now I'm trying to bind them into one job), they look ... different. There are so many differences and they are so visible that I found a theory, along with my friends:

Dragons from Pantala are representatives of another dragon species. In support of my thesis I will use the information I have in all books, except Volume 12, suggestions from fandom friends and see what I have in the field of biology, genetics and anatomy.

We must start with the fact that the three Pantala races, although we are not even sure that they are races, because they may be equally separate species ~ we do not know any canonical hybrid example between them, and the differences are very visible, they have a rather specific appearance . Their theoretical cousins from Pyrrhii, originating from one primitive race, owe their appearance to typical environmental adaptation and natural selection. Their color of scales, the construction of the eyeball, blood, claws, even wings and spines developed as a result of the natural process of adaptation to the environment. This is fascinating and sometimes unique for the Tui book series. The appearance of the dragon is not accidental or created for visual purposes, no, everything is where it should be. But dragons in Pantala, and especially Silkwings, what adaptation was to have different colored scales, if we know that the breed evolved in times when Pantala was forested, not empty savanna. In this environment, the look of Leafwings is not strange, and even indicated and logical, and I will not mention Hivewing, I will deal with the theory of their origin later.

Silkwing's development is another matter. I have two questions, how and why? Composite development is typical for insects and simpler organisms. I do not think it would ever be necessary for a dragon. Having four separate wings that require a lot of coordination and use of aerodynamics from the body is also something special and surprising. If, like the dragons from Pyrrhia, they are a race of the same species, why are two wings transformed into four?

Silkwing still, why do they have the ability to spin silk and why from wrists. I will not mention the rare "Flamesilks" mutation, which although it is similar to Skywing's "FireScales", it is very different from it. This is an obvious reference to the butterfly called the Silkworm. The unique difference is the construction of time and horns. Those in Pantala, Silkwing and Leafwings are extremely elongated and flattened. If these organisms were or still are mainly predators, what is the reason for such a muzzle construction. Another small thing is the lack of a forked tounge, a small but typical thing for all the dragons from Pyrrhia. Antennas are another matter. According to Cricket, even the Hivewings once possessed them but after a while as they evolved they disappeared. The question is, did these races live in underground or conditions that required such adaptation from them?

Another argument for the fact that it is a separate genre is simple, the distance between continents. If we assume that the planet is similar to Earth, apart from having three moons, then we can conclude that at the beginning of the continent they were united in a certain way, but it would have to be for millennia before the appearance of dragon species. In addition, considering the differences between Silkwings and Leafwings, I would assume that these are even two separate and extreme species of dragons that have evolved over the years. The latter are more akin to dragons that inhabit the Pyrrhi continent and may belong to the same species.

Summarizing. I deny the reading and gathering of knowledge that the Dragons of Pyrrhii and Pantala belonged to one species. This is very possible in the case of Silkwings and less on Leafwings, their construction is similar to the dragons from the Old Continent, moreover, their development in the forest environment resembles that through which they passed Rainwingi and is not as ridiculous and extreme as the Silkwings. We know that in their development / change of appearance certainly did not help magic, because in Pantala it is not and never was.

At the end I left the Hivewing race. This race is an example of exceptional nonsense. According to volume 12 and 11, they are related to Clearsight and Sunstreak from Silkwings. I do not deny the fact that their dragons could exist, because such inter species hybrids are possible in our world, I deny that these hybrids were fertile. A similar example of the hybrid between the species is also Mule - a sterile animal. The Hivewings themselves look like a very complex and separate race. Their wings, as in many insects, have clearly visible membranes, cubital ones on membranes and radians at the ends, something not found in any other race or dragon species. They have an extremely slim, almost insect-like body structure, unusual for the Silkwings, and certainly not for the Nightwing. On the basis of this theory, which I know so well, is canonical, but it can always be denied, it is the fact of having a range of odd and unnatural skills:

 - Acid in the tail

 - Venom in the teeth (not only main 2 fangs) and claws

 - Poison from spikes or "claws" on the wings

 - Paralyzing toxin

 - deadly spikes from "wrists"

These may be the effects of the "Founding Effect" and the dragons joining into one family (If we assume that their appearance was determined by Clearsight and Sunstreak and stabilized over the centuries), such mutations as possible could arise. Ability to breath fire, wings construction and Nightwing powers could quickly disappear, but their appearance still contrasts with their theoretical ancestors. The assumption and dissemination, however, that they are a race coming from them is not only a brilliant propaganda trick (To some extent etymology origin from the Aryan Race) but also provided the Hivewingom the justification that their origin gave them superiority and the need to dominate the continent (Further reference to "Lebensraum" and the Aryan race).

I know that I am from this group, which still sighs to the "Legends", here I have only moved my reflections and thoughts, everyone has to interpret them myself.
