Run For Your Life
Stevie was frozen to the spot, her children still looking around the store.
"Mommy, can we get this? I've never had it before." Callie asks her, holding up an odd looking fruit.
"Sure, baby. Whatever." Stevie says, her voice emotionless and you could tell in her eyes that she was somewhere else.
"What's wrong?" Dylan asks, hearing her odd tone.
"What are you looking at? What do you see?" Callie asked, trying to look from her vantage point.
"I think we should go" she says, forcing them to put the baskets down.
"Mommy, we haven't paid"
"We'll come back later" she says, taking her children's hands in her shaking ones.
"Mom..." Dylan said.
"Yeah, mom" came a mocking voice from behind her and she turned around. "Hey, Stevie"
"B-brock" she stammered. "What are you doing here?"
"Grocery shopping" he says with a shrug.
"Oh. Great." she says, forcing a mechanical smile. "We were just leaving" Stevie attempted to move away from him and push her kids toward the door.
"No, stay. You look good" he said, his hand on her shoulder.
"Babies, go to the car. Take my keys." She opened her bag and began fishing around for them, unable to locate anything resembling her many key chains.
"Daddy has the car, remember?" Callie reminded her.
"Shit" Tears well up in her eyes and Dylan began to feel protective of his mother.
"It's okay, Stevie. I can give you a ride." Brock offered. Something was strange about him. Something in his eyes wasn't quite right. "Don't be scared, precious. I would never hurt you" He caressed her cheek, tucking a long golden tendril behind her ear. "Oh, what do we have here?"
"Don't touch her" Dylan growled, holding onto his sister and his mother.
Brock reached out a hand and pulled back her jacket, revealing a very prominent bump. "You're pregnant, congratulations" he said in a disturbingly sweet tone. He touched her, feeling the baby stir. She winced at the rapid movement, stroking the side of her bump. "A strong one! Boy or girl?"
"I don't know" she lied, her eyes never once leaving his. She was terrified, her children could feel it.
"Let's go, mom" Dylan said, tugging on her hand. Callie was silent, just as scared as Stevie was.
"What's the rush? Talk to me."
"About w-what?" She bit her lip to stop it from quivering.
"We're going" Dylan said again, turning to Brock. "You stay away from her. She's had to deal with you enough"
"Back off! You're just like your dad. You don't know how to shut up. Children are to be seen and not heard" Brock pushed the tall, lanky thirteen year old with such a force that he stumbled and Stevie found her strength.
"Don't you dare touch my son!" she warned, getting in his face.
"Or what?"
"I will hunt you down! After all you have done to me and my family, I'm not about to play nice" Her mama bear instincts were coming out full force.
"Calm down" Dylan urged.
"Honey, I'm not going to let him treat you that way"
"Relax, the baby."
"I know, I know" she said, waving him off.
"You should listen to him. Wouldn't want anything to happen, would we?" He touches her again and she shoves his hand away.
"You're sick, Brock! I can't believe I almost married you."
"I could have given you so much more than some old house on the hill. You could have had mansions, pools, cars...anything you desired but you stayed with an architect, struggling."
"Not that it's any of your business but we are far from struggling" she said, scoffing. "You know nothing about us."
"I know plenty and I'm learning more everyday"
Well I'd rather see you dead, little girl
Than to be with another man
You better keep your head, little girl
Or you won't know where I am
"What does that mean?" Stevie asked.
"I think we both know what that means, sweet pea. Haven't you noticed anything weird? Your home in Phoenix has cameras all over the place. People follow you almost everywhere. I know you fucked Lindsey when you were with me. I know about the cute little pet names you have for each other, how cuddly you both are. I've seen you pleasure yourself..." he said.
"Shut up!"
"You don't want your kids to know what a slut their mother is?"
"Don't talk about her!" Dylan intervened again.
"Do as you're told, little boy" he warned. "Or it will be the last time you disobey."
"Threaten him one more time..."
"Come on, Stevie. Hit me, baby. I dare you."
You better run for your life if you can, little girl
Hide your head in the sand little girl
Catch you with another man
That's the end'a little girl
"I would never"
"Idle threats don't mean shit. You can't say something like that then not back it up. Don't you know anything? Obviously not if you went back to Lindsey. Good, old, reliable Lindsey."
Well I know that I'm a wicked guy
And I was born with a jealous mind
And I can't spend my whole life
Trying just to make you toe the line
"What is it about him that turns you on? What is it that makes you want to be with him, have his baby?" He presses his body into hers and Stevie pushes her children back behind her, shielding them the best she can. They were already taller than she was.
"Call daddy" Stevie tells them. The kids nod and Callie steps away, scrolling the 'recents' on her phone to call her dad. She can never remember his number. Dylan stays behind with Stevie, making sure things don't get even more out of hand.
You better run for your life if you can, little girl
Hide your head in the sand little girl
Catch you with another man
That's the end'a little girl
Let this be a sermon
I mean everything I've said
Baby, I'm determined
And I'd rather see you dead
"Sweet girl" he purred. "Now that I see you all big and pregnant...what I wouldn't give to be that man" He made her take a step back, his face inches from hers. "Our baby would be so beautiful, Stevie, just think about it."
"No" she says.
"Run away with me. I could be this baby's daddy and we could have so many of our own. I won't treat them any different" He said it in a way that sounded like he actually thought this was a good plan. "Stevie, we could have such a cute little life. Stephanie Mason sounds pretty good."
"No" she told him again. He forced her back another step and his hands slid along the sides of her bump, wrapping around her waist. "Do you ever think about me, have dreams about me?"
"Those are called nightmares, not dreams" Dylan says. "I suggest you back up off her before I have to make you" He tore the man's arms away from his mother and a fire ignited in his eyes. His father would be proud but his mother didn't like it one bit.

"Ooooh strong words coming from such a weak little boy"
"I'll show you weak, you bastard!" He raised his fist, ready to fight to protect her.
"He's on his way" Callie said, returning to her family.
I'd rather see you dead, little girl
Than to be with another man
You better keep your head, little girl
Or you won't know where I am
"Oh good, a reunion!" Brock said gleefully. "This should be so much fun!"
"We're leaving" Stevie says, pulling Dylan's arm down from striking position to rest at his side.
"You've said that before and yet here you stand. You don't want to leave me. You want to leave this sad little life behind. Come be with me."
"She dumped you, dude! It was over a year ago, get over it!"
"Dylan!" Stevie hissed.
"Shut up!" Brock yelled, catching lots of unwanted attention. He pushed toward her again and Stevie felt an unfamiliar twinge. "Is something wrong?" He asks, suddenly looking concerned as he watches the pained expression on her beautiful face. The sudden change in emotion was too much and she began to cry. "Let me hold you"
"Leave her alone!" Dylan yelled.
"He's outside" Callie updated, checking her text messages.
"Come on" Dylan tugged her hand, pulling her toward the door and Brock pulled her back roughly. She gasped, feeling very trapped and in terrible danger. Her breathing grew erratic and her heart raced. It brought back all of the memories from their interaction at the airport, all the color draining from her face as she collapsed to the floor in front of him.
