Chapter 1- Shade of a Mandrake

Green witches hated monsoon. Everything was wet and mucky, especially when you stay in the middle of a dense forest.

Today, when Wheein woke up and saw sunlight coming through the window, she ran right out the house with her basket in hand. It had been more than two months since she got the chance to take a walk around the forest since it had been raining constantly. Even though she always had more than enough herbs, and her own garden to pluck flowers from, she loved going around the forest.

Wheein was humming her favourite song with the biggest smile on her face while walking through the forest. But she stopped immediately when she spotted another big basket, just like her's next to a bunch of mandrakes. Worried that another witch had been wandering around her land, she walked ahead to get a glance of the herbs that would be in the basket. What she saw was something she did not expect... ever.

There was a little baby in the basket. She was staring at Wheein who was staring back at her. 'Which uneducated piece of shit keeps their baby next to poisonous mandrakes' was the only thing Wheein could think of at this point. She kneeled down to check if the baby belonged to a werewolf, vampire or a human. She plucked a petal from the roses she collected and kept it on the baby's forehead. If the petal turned black, the baby would be a vampire, if it turns green, werewolf and if it stays the same, she'd be a human. The petal remained the same. Wheein sighed and thought it would be better to just mind her own business. She's not someone who'd want to deal with humans who were so dumb that they left their own baby under the shade of a mandrake. She moved the basket away from there and started to walk on her way back home.

As soon as she took a few steps away in the opposite direction, she felt strangely overwhelmed. Even though it's a commonly felt emotion between humans, witches don't feel that way until they're about to make a mistake. Wheein felt like if she left the baby over there, she would never feel complete again.

Witches also don't feel these kind of emotions for just anyone. They only feel this way when they find someone who belongs with them, like their families, their covens and their magical powers. What Wheein felt was an overwhelming feeling of belongingness, like what people feel when they desperately want someone or something to never leave them. To say that she was confused would be an understatement.

Either way, Wheein sat next to the basket for a long time, waiting for someone to show up before she decided to take the baby girl to her house where she could relax her mind and try to understand why she could feel an attachment with this girl.

"You better not be the death of me" Wheein warned the baby who was still staring at Wheein from the basket as she made her way to the witch house.

Wheein walked in the house to see that her coven was already waiting for her. Solar and Moonbyul looked unsure as they stared at the basket, but Hwasa, the divination witch of their coven, stood tall, confident and happy.

"That's baby Nina. She'll stay with us. We'll raise her to be the woman she's meant to be. It's fate, so please don't question it. Just trust me." Hwasa announced and looked at the witches one by one, receiving nothing but uncertain nods. She took her wallet from the table and walked out of the house without mentioning another word.

Wheein didn't know what to think. She knew Hwasa was aware of the fact that this was going to happen, after all she's the one with the vision. The three witches trusted her, of course. But witches raising a human, that sure was a first.

18 years went by faster than one could imagine. The witches had raised Nina with so much love that Nina never felt like she needed a mother or a father. To her, this was her family; her Solar unnie, the Elemental Witch who was always so protective of her coven and Nina. Her Byulie unnie, the Lunar Witch who was the strict one, but she loved her coven and Nina way more than she could express, and they knew that. Her Wheein unnie, the Green Witch who was always cheerful and responsible for getting Nina out of trouble when she misbehaved. And lastly, her Hwasa unnie, the Divination Witch who Nina believes is her guardian angel.

While raising Nina, the witches came to realise that Nina is the only one of her kind, she was the only werewolf-human hybrid to ever exist.

Hwasa was the only one who knew since the start but she let time take it's course and waited for her coven to realise the same. Nina's wolf like instincts started to confuse the witches as she grew. Her sense of smell was unbelievably strong, she could run at an abnormally fast speed and for a very long distance without getting tired. She was extremely very protective of the witches, but not in a way you'd call normal, she always wanted assurance, she always needed to know that they were there for her. Some would say it's because she was abandoned but the witches knew the difference between the fear of abandonment and 'pack mentality'. Almost all animals that Nina came across would be scared of her to such an extinct that they would immediately take an about turn and run for their lives. Dogs were the only ones that wouldn't get scared of her, they would look up to her as someone with a lot of authority.

These characteristics made the witches nervous because if Nina was a wolf, she needed to know as she would shift when she turns 18. After conducting several magical tests the witches came to a conclusion that she was the first hybrid the world would ever see. Hwasa only confirmed the fact and got yelled at by her sisters for not telling them about it for all these years.

Once they were sure they sat Nina down and spoke to her. They told her about werewolves and vampires in detail. They told her why the world was unsafe for her because she was rare. But Nina only looked at Hwasa and smiled. They both knew that Nina would be fine. Hwasa knew so because the witches raised her to be that way, they raised her to be strong, always prepared and always ready to help someone in need. But Nina knew so because she trusted the fact that her unnies would take care of her, they would guide her.

Ever since all of them clearly knew who she was, they all mutually decided to not let Nina out of their vision until she was able to take care of herself. Nina was home schooled till she was 18, she studied through several courses online and learned a lot of different things. The forest was her home, just like it was to the witches. That only made it easier for her to practice whatever she wanted and take as much space as she needed.

The witches taught her different skills and trained her for the day when she would have to go out and see the world that she's been an invisible part of.

Solar taught her how to swim and how to fight in times of need. Moonbyul taught her everything there was to know about werewolves since she was a Lunar witch and prayed to the same goddess as wolves did, the Moon Goddess. Wheein taught Nina herbalism, she taught her how to make medicines with herbs and flowers, to heal wounds that normal doctors can't treat. Hwasa taught her how to read the minds of humans, vampires and werewolves. She gave her all the knowledge she had about body language and basic psychology.

Nina's personality was a mixture of her 4 unnies and her inner wolf who she named 'Winter'. She was sensitive and emotionally very intelligent like Wheein. She was a good liar like Hwasa, of course only when she needed to be. She had low tolerance when it came to men, even though she hadn't met any and she gets that from Moonbyul. She was fast at learning and was always open to new ideas just like her Solar unnie.

But being a hybrid obviously wasn't all full of perks. Nina was stronger than the humans of her age but she was a lot weaker than vampires and werewolves. She couldn't shift, which was a relief because shifting comes with pain that's not easy to endure. She didn't have a strong sense of hearing like other werewolves did , she couldn't howl to call for her pack, and she couldn't possibly have a pack. The worst trait of all was her scent. She reeked of this sweet scent that was easy to catch on to from miles away. Other werewolves had their own scents too, but they were never this strong.

She had turned 18 and according to Hwasa she was ready to be sent to school like a normal kid of her age. The school was a long distance from the forest. The town had just one common school for everyone. Vampires, werewolves and witches existed was common knowledge amongst the people. The 4 communities had been maintaining a balance for centuries together.

Needless to say, the witches were nervous. Nina had just one thing to keep in mind but that was not an easy task to keep up with, not with her unavoidable scent. She couldn't let anyone know that she was a hybrid, at least not for a few more years. But a werewolf for sure would smell her and know in an instinct. Seeing a strange wolf for the first time in this town could really make them think that she's sent by rivals. They could easily keep her as a hostage and do unspeakable things to her if she didn't give them a satisfying answer.

Wheein prepared a potion for her that she was supposed to add in the bathtub and bathe in everyday to keep the scent at bay. But just in case of an emergency, Wheein gave her a bottle of the potion and told Nina that she could spray it on herself whenever she wanted.

Solar was worried about just one pack, the strongest pack in their town, Bangtan. Those boys were something else. No one knew too much about them and they were said to have done horrible things to people who betrayed them or were proved to be harmful to them.

Moonbyul was worried about the vampires, they could dry her off of every single drop of blood in her body to experiment and check if they could have hybrids of their species as well.

Wheein was worried that if the humans found out they would publicly burn Nina's body down. They already had to deal with vampires and werewolves, a hybrid was next level.

Hwasa stood back and smiled at Nina, knowing that whatever was to come her way, she would deal with it.

Nina hugged her unnies goodbye and told them not worry. The witches told her they could give her a ride but Nina insisted on running to college to shake off the nervousness of her first ever day of school.

She was aware of everything. She knew she could deal with it. She knew Hwasa would tell her if she couldn't.
