To a lot of people, Spider-man was a study in contradictions.
Of the many superheroes that have popped up over the years, he was one, if not the only, mainstream heroes whose identity the public did not know. Yet, he was well-loved by the people, often called New York's hero.
Ever since he started, Spider-man was always moving, shouting another quip or backflipping in the middle of the night, swinging through the streets of NYC almost every day. No one would protest if he was called noisy, it was just a well-known fact by now.
It's just that the type of noise he makes was soothing in a way, something everyone got used to with time.
Because hearing quips and energetic whoops meant that Spider-man was nearby.
And if Spider-man was nearby, then he was keeping you safe.
Yet, at that moment, when he was fighting that thing, he didn't say a word, fully focused on the fight in front of him.
Normally, when Spider-man did his thing, jokes and all, it never failed to garner attention, though calling him a menace was a little too much, the Bugle wasn't too far off.
Curiously though, when he's silent, fighting with everything he's god, somehow, his presence becomes even bigger, yet still the same, in a way. Spider-man has always radiated reassurance, the noise he constantly generates bringing peace to the people.
But, somehow, his silence was louder than anything that could have said.
It said, New York still had Spider-man and nothing would get past Spider-man easily.

The being hits the ground hard, evident in the slight tremble of the road, seen even through the cameras.
For a minute, the silence prevails, wrapping the entirety of New York with eeriness and unnatural stillness.
And then,
The world explodes.
Cheers deafening, even through the little old rickety TV that Alex was watching through.
For a while, Alex had been drifting along. Ever since he was a kid living in Queens, he had worked towards his current job, marketing - the same job that his father had.
His father had been the sort of man who looked like he genuinely enjoyed every aspect of his life at all times. So, it was to the surprise of absolutely no one that Alex had decided to pursue the same profession as his father.
The first few years, he had enjoyed it the same way his father did. But, well, life had a way of throwing a wrench in his plans.
His wife died.
His wife, Grace, was someone Alex had adored with his entire being. It was just the two of them since the beginning, with Grace unable to bear them a child. They were each other's life. So, losing her made him lose himself too.
Now, a few months after the funeral, he was simply going through the motions of his job, a profession he used to adore and yet, couldn't quite seem to gather enough energy to feel anything other than bored.
30 years into the profession and Alex had suddenly lost the energy to feel alongside the death of his wife.
Yet, as he looked out of his window, at the buildings and roads that needed to be rebuilt, his eyes close shut and, for the first time since the funeral, took a deep breath and simply listened to his city, living in the moment and forgetting, just for a second or two, everything that had led up to this moment in time.
Though it was just a few roads and the occasional building, New York hadn't been this destroyed in a while. Still, Alex had never seen the city quite like this before.
Because every single person, above or below his apartment, in the streets or watching through the TV, are roaring at the same time.
Ah, he thought, what a time to be alive. It's been a while since he felt this happy and elated.
How curious.

Is Spider-man going to be the newest Avenger or is he sticking to Queens?

"One last question," the reporter asks, knowing well that this would probably be the most important question he'd ask in his career. "No one really expected you to be the one who'd beat the 'final boss'. How'd you do it?"
Looking at the superhero, he awkwardly shuffles his feet. Spider-man had a piercing look, he could tell, even with his face being obstructed by a mask. Turning to look at the area, road wrecked to high hell, Spider-man said simply, "I did what I had to do."
Brian stills for a moment, shivers running down his spine making him shudder slightly, blood turning cold despite the summer heat. How simple. Do what you have to do.
No one really knows how much superheroes have to train. How hard they have to work to be able to go against the heavens and defy human standards of strength. But, that fact has never been so emphasized the same as this moment. Spider-man, who hasn't had a single death to his name in his whole superhero career, who everyone thought was just some glorified gymnast, who everyone underestimated, turned out to be the strongest of them all.
How hard did he have to train to be able to hold back so much, to never land a killing blow, even accidentally?
Brian didn't know it yet.
But, he was looking at the future of heroics.
Or, at least, that's what everyone watching the livestream felt.
Instead, he lets his lips tug into a wry, helpless smile. How simple a reason, yet... how complex underneath. "Gotcha."

Tony sits beside him, shock blanket wrapped around his shoulders securely. They've been sipping energy drinks for a while now and frankly, Peter might be sort of high from it. He feels like he can fight a war, maybe climb the top of Mount Everest. He feels like he can learn kung fu via dumplings. He feels like he could take over the world!
Instead, he simply sighs and sits back, wincing a little from the pain that was slowly fading. Thank god for his healing factor, otherwise, Peter supposed he'd be bedridden from the pain of a few cracked ribs and heavily bruised everything. Around him, the Avengers all turn to him, alerted by his sigh of content.
"Hey, Pete?"
Cracking one eye open, Peter looks at his mentor and the man beside him, Captain America, who was looking at him attentively, humming a questioning, "Hm?"
"Is this why you save the little guy?"
Tilting his head, obviously confused, he asks for clarification, "What?"
"Because they give back?" Steve clarified.
Humming, Peter thinks back to an hour ago, when he, for the first time ever, decided that he needed to stop holding back and was nearly overpowered. He remembered the people chanting around him. Come on, Spider-man.
Perhaps, no one in this room, actually maybe no one at all, knew just how significant those words were. Come on, Spider-man. Those were the words he told himself when he was buried under a building, panicked and feeling defeated.
Come on, Spider-man.
But, he thought back to the first night he went out as a vigilante seriously, when he decided this is what he'd dedicate the rest of his life to. At the time, he went out late at night, encountering an old man trying to close shop but didn't quite have the energy to finish up and was simply panting tiredly.
He had helped him out. Nothing too noteworthy to think about, really. Not even something one would normally say was memorable.
He just helped him put up a few cans here and there and close the shop windows.
Nevertheless, he had been told, "you're a real lifesaver, kid."
Ever since he started out, he had always had the same philosophy. Rescue over capture. Put the little guy first.
So, he replies to his mentor, "Why save the little guy...?" Blinking, Peter looks at the two, both with varying looks on their faces. He replied, as if it was common sense, "Well, why shouldn't I?"
Ah, how simple.
Yet, so complex.
Why should you save the little guy?
Tony thought back to the first time he met Spider-man. With great power, comes great responsibility, Mr. Stark. How far they've come in only a year or two. Looking at the teen who was grinning a bloody and tired smile, nursing his ribs gingerly, and looking like he's about to topple over, Tony is reminded that Peter Parker wasn't just a teen, no matter how many times he liked to mention it.
Peter had seen things even the Avengers couldn't normally stomach, on a near daily basis.
Yet, he still came to the conclusion to save the little guy even when everyone in the room, youngest superhero included, knew that Peter Parker, with his skill, could become an Avenger, no questions asked.
Tony couldn't help the brief puff of pride as he looks at his protegee. This kid...
Beside him, Steve is struck speechless.
Why shouldn't I save the little guy?
Huh. It was that simple.
If he could, then why shouldn't he?
Rubbing a tired hand over his dirty face, Steve chuckles to himself. Why shouldn't he, indeed.
Moving to lean on the wall, Steve looks at the rest of his team members, all of whom look like they're either about to have an aneurysm or an epiphany. Everyone in this room, save the oblivious spider who looked like he was about to succumb to the sweet relief of sleep, was aware that they had a lot to do to be able to even try and call themselves a hero.
Well. It's not like they never started from the bottom, right?
Subtly covering his eyes, Peter sighs undetected by the people around the room. He was aware that the show he put on during that fight was a big eye opener for the Avengers and the call of the people, an ever harsher one. Right about now, they probably realized that there was much more to heroics than muscles and posing in a circle heroically.
They have a long way to go, don't get him wrong. Thinking about the multiple buildings, press conferences and UN meetings he had to endure, Peter winced slightly. They have a very long way to go.
But, if there's one thing he knew about people in this line of work is that they had determination in spades.
Most of them had already taken steps to better themselves already like Sam and Nat. Now, it's just a matter of committing to it.
Still, Peter bets that they're all thinking something like, 'it's not like we didn't start from somewhere, right?' which, Peter supposed, was true to an extent. The thing is, people like the Avengers, who had training and the privilege to have good equipment and a proper backer, they don't start from the bottom of the ladder, they start somewhere. Whether they asked for it or not, all of these people either had some sort of gift or talent that got them noticed or was sheltered from the dark, dark world.
Peter thinks, maybe these people will never truly understand what it means to be an underdog like the vigilantes, who have to create their own gear and protect their own like feral dogs pressed against the wall for months before they could even start to claim they had a foothold of their 'territory'. People like him, who had to figure out how to even function before starting out had to start from the very bottom, nay, the underground.
So, seeing them all harden their resolve the same way he did all those months ago, Peter can't help but laugh silently. They don't know what they're in for and it is going to be hilarious. Smirking tiredly, Peter allows himself to surrender to the aching tiredness in his bones but not before thinking,
Welcome to level 0, Avengers.
