Chapter Ten

(Nathan's pov)

"Are you sure you're ok?" Jason asked me.

It's been a few hours since we left the restaurant, where we had, had lunch with Katie at.

"I'm not sure," I answered truthfully.

I was just about to the leave the restaurant, when Katie had said something, something that I hadn't heard in fifteen years.

*A Few Hours Earlier*

"Thank you both for inviting me for lunch," Katie said, smiling at the two of us.

"It's not a problem," Jason said, returning her smile.

I knew something was weighing on Jason's mind. When Katie had mentioned that she was adopted from Hanson Orphanage, his whole demeanor had changed.

Katie was a very nice girl, but there was just something there that wasn't right.

"Well next time it'll be my treat."

"You don't have to do that," I said, Katie shook her head in disagreement, as her southern voice soon could be heard.

"No, I insist. You two didn't have to invite me, it's the least I can do."

Jason and I just shook our heads in agreement. We knew she wasn't going to take no for an answer, no matter how much we tried.

"Well I better get going if I want to beat the traffic. It was nice meeting you Katie, and I'll see you later ok Nathan." Jason said, walking past us as he exited the restaurant.

"Ladies first," I said as I opened the glass door.

"Why thank you kind sir," Katie said as she walked out the door.

"So, you and Jason seem pretty close."

"We are, we've been close friends since we were little," I said.

"I was nervous about coming to lunch today," Katie admitted.

"Why's that?" I asked.

"I've never really been all that good at making friends, I've always been the loner type most my life. So when I moved here, I was determined to go outside of my comfort zone, which is a lot of the reason why I introduced myself the day I moved in. When you asked me to lunch, I was unsure of what to do, cause I knew you were nice, but I hadn't met Jason yet."

"I see," I said as we continued walking towards our cars.

That explains that look last night, I thought. I remember when I asked her, she had this small panicked look on her face.

"But I'm glad I came, Jason and you are a lot a like," Katie said as she slipped her purse from her shoulder, opening it, as she began her search for her keys.

"I keep telling myself to go to a smaller purse," Katie muttered under her breath as she continued looking.

"Ah here they are," she triumphantly said, causing me to chuckle at her.

"Well I'd like to thank you for joining us today, I know what it's like to move to a new place and not know anyone," I said.

"Didn't you grow up here though?"

"No, I actually grew up about an hour from here."

"Why did you move?" Katie asked.

"Like you I guess, I just needed a fresh start," I said as Katie shook her head in understanding.

"Well this is me," I said as we reached my car.

"Looks like I parked next to you," Katie said.

I watched as she walked over to her car, unlocking the door before opening it. Katie got into her car as she entered the keys into the ignition.

"You be careful ok," I said as I unlocked my door.

"I will, and you be careful as well Nate," Katie said.

I could feel my whole body tense at the words, that had just slipped past her lips.

"W-What did you just call me?" I asked, my voice shaky.

"I called you Nathan," she said.

She's lying, her face gave it away. She was nervously biting her bottom lip, as her fingers fidgeted against the steering wheel.

It looked as if all the color had drained from her face, you could see the panic in her eyes.

"Is everything ok?"

"Uh, yeah. Sorry I just thought you had called me something else is all."

Katie told me goodbye before she pulled off, all the while I just stood there.

I quickly got into my car, slamming the door behind me, releasing a few shaky breaths that I didn't know I had been holding.

Once I had calmed myself down, enough to he trusted behind a wheel, I cranked up before speeding off.

*Present Time*

"Lizzy was the only one who called me Nate, Jason," I said.

"And you're sure she said Nate?" Jason asked.

"I'm positive, you should've seen her, she had this panicked look on her face after she said it, it was like she had said something she wasn't supposed to."

Groaning, I stood from the couch, and began pacing again. Jason just sat there and watched me, pace back and forth.

"You know I thought that today would answer some questions for me, but now I'm just more confused than I was before," I said.

"It's weird if you ask me, I mean come on. She was twelve when she was adopted, which was the same age Elizabeth was when she went missing. She's the same age Elizabeth would've been if she was still here, and what's even weirder is that she claims to have been adopted from Hanson Orphanage, anyone who has lived here or even close to where we grew up knows that it went out of business in the late sixties," Jason said, causing me to stop in my track's.

"What?" He asked as I stared at him.

He gave me a questioning look before I practically ran out of the living room towards my room.

Grabbing my laptop from the bedside table, I made my way back into the living room, joining Jason on the couch.

I opened up my laptop as I started typing into my search engine.

Hanson Orphanage

It didnt take long after I pressed enter, before my screen was filled with several links, relating to my search.

"What are you doing?" Jason asked me, his face wearing a confused expression.

"Research," is all I said to him, which probably didn't help with the confused state he was in.

"History on Hanson Orphanage"

Hanson Orphanage was built in the early 1920's, when it was first open it was highly praised as being one of the best orphanage's.

However, after several accusations of abuse had been reported to the local authorities, their high praise had been quickly diminished.

Social services quickly stepped in, as the orphanage under went strict observation.

Most the town's people were quite shocked, when they heard that the investigation was closed.

Close by neighbors would report being able to hear children's screams throughout the night, sometimes not stopping until the break of dawn.

No matter how many times the orphanage had been reported, or went under several investigation's, they continued to stay open.

In the 1940's, the Hanson Orphanage was briefly shut down, after a young girl fell to her death from the rooftop of the four story building.

Most people just speculated that the young girl had committed suicide, but others had a different opinion.

It was said that a nurse who had worked there, claimed that she had watched as one of the doctor's had pushed her off of the roof.

When the orphanage had reopened, it was said the nurse who had accused the doctor of killing the girl, never returned.

A few months later, the nurses body was found at the bottom of the local lake.

The death toll started rising after the reopening, many of the children were severely malnourished.

It was reported that many of the local towns people, finally had enough, they had decided to take matters into their own hands.

That leads us to 1966. The deadly fire that had put an end to Hanson Orphanage, once and for all.

Eye witnesses say that when the fire was set, everyone was still inside the orphanage.

You're probably thinking that things couldn't get worse, well they do.

In 2004, a group of urban explorers ventured into the abandoned building. The family's of the explorers grew concerned, when they never returned home.

After local authorities talked to the families, they learned that their last location was at the Hanson Orphanage.

The police drove out to the orphanage to see if they could find any evidence, as to were the group had disappeared to.

Upon arrival, the explorers vehicle's were found, where they had been originally left.

Police then entered the orphanage, where they later discovered the bodies of the explorers.

I stared at the screen for a few second's, before clicking. The screen flashed white, as the new page started to load.

Continuation....

Authorities never released cause of death, but onlookers had reported, being able to see bloody ropes, that were later sealed in evidence bags.

I wish I could say that was the end to this tragic story, but sadly it's not.

Two years after the explorers death, another strange death accrued, as well as in 2010, and the most recent one being in 2016.

"Jesus Christ man!" Jason exclaimed.

I looked towards the bottom of the screen, where a list had caught my eye.

Record's

Dragging my mouse down, I clicked on record's.

Record's

After they finished cleaning up the wreckage, they were able to salvage some of the record's of the patients.

They were taken to the local archives, where they have been keeping them for the last couple of years.

Sighing, I closed my laptop. Looking over at Jason as he gave me a weird look.

"I knew that place had a fucked up history, I just didn't know it was that fucked up," Jason said.

"Do you think we could get our hands on those files?" I asked.

"Maybe, it depends though."

"Depends on what?"

"Well, it mainly depends on if you'll have to show proof of relation," Jason said.

"That could be a problem."

"Even if we can get our hand's on them, doesn't even mean every patients file is there."

"So. What are our options?" I asked.

"We go to the archives and hope we can get the record's."

"And if that doesn't work?"

"We're just fucked," Jason said.

"Lovely," I grumbled.
