Nothing I Would Rather Do
"Awfully cheery this mornin' aren't ye Miss. Olson?" Stu asked in a posh accent as I sat down on the bus.
"Ay' it's a Friday, and we've got a party and a gig!" I said excitedly clapping my hands together. "Why wouldn't I be excited? For both of us I mean."
"Course, once I start playin' some Little Richard, gonna make the birds crazy." He said, doing small poses, making us both laugh. Then leaning over and whispering in my ear. "What's it like bein' in love with a singer, is it 'mazin'?"
"Ye can't fall in love, if ye don't believe in it." I growled at him. "And tell me?" I began singing. "How could one fall in love, with someone who doesn't love them back? Oh, let me tell you that. It's impossible."
"Ye've got a crowd," Stu commented nodding his head over to John who was eyeing me up and down.
"That lovely song was written about Stu!" I shouted loudly as the bus stopped to let on the next group of kids. "It was about his ex bird who swore she loved him, but now that he has Annie, he 'as no use for these sad love songs, right Stu?"
"Sod off." Stu said, as I messed up his hair, both of us laughing. The rest of the back of the bus joined in laughing, I smiled, shoving Stu as the bus came to another stop at the school.

"So, are ye gonna dance with Annie? Or did you not even tell her?" I said, laughing at him. We were on our way home from school, nothing too eventful happened. John asked me in notes about the song and told me to save a dance for him at the party, but I doubted it would actually play out.
"Eh, I like 'er. She's a bit too clingy. I mean ye wouldn't know anythin' 'bout that. I think I've only got room for you in me life, maybe I could do a John and 'ave a side girl." Stu said laughing and bumping my hip with his.
"It's not like that... I don't know what it is Stu. It's confusing okay." I said sighing, stealing his cigarette and taking a long drag off of it.
"Do ye lik-" Stu said, but his voice quickly died down as John came into view.
"Ay'," John said walking towards us, a small smile playing on his lips. "Can I take ye the rest of the way? Ye don't mind do ya Stu? Ivan wants us to 'ed over their already."
"Alri' I guess I'll see ye there Kat, eight right?" Stu said, moving towards to the left side street.
"She'll be there!" John called over his shoulder before wrapping an arm around my waist. "I'm glad you'll be there ye know and you'll be able to see us play. Maybe you'll be me good luck charm yeah?"
"John, why're ye 'ere instead of with the band? Don't they need you, aren't you unable to be seen with me?" I asked, scuffing my shoes slightly as we walked up my walk way.
"Why would I be with them when I could be with you. Anyways Kat, you know it's not like that, I'm not ashamed to be friends with you... It's just dangerous for me to scream out and proclaim my love." John said calmly, holding my hand in his big rough one.
"I know, I just didn't know the rules."
"There are no rules when yer with me." John said raising his eyebrows in a mostly flirty but comical way. "Anyways, I-uh..."
"John," I began to laugh as I felt his nerves tense in his hand, John quickly kissed me, pulling back with a smile on his face, and laughing at my own shocked one.
"Look, will ye be me Judy? You can tell Stu if ye'd like. But not any of those Mod big mouth birds." John said making us both laugh, it's true. I bit my lip thinking about my answer. "So, love what do ye say? Will ye make me heavy 'eart light again?"
"Hmm... Well John, I'll think about it. I'll see you tonight." I said with a smirk on my face as I slipped through the door, muffling Johns voice.

"Are you trying to get the cops down to Ivan's?" Annie asked, a big smile coming to her face. I stared at her confused, urging her for an explanation. "That shirt! Yer gonna get the fire station down 'ere. Hot!"
"Get off it Annie, yer ridiculous. Plus, ye brought the shirt! Basically forcin' it on me. So, it's yer fault any road." I said, laughing at her as I pulled on my teddy boots and threw my leather jacket over the white shirt, with just a bit of lace. I looked good, maybe too much cleavage I thought as I pulled up the shirt. "Are you ready?"
"Yep! Let's go!" She clapped her hands excitedly, as we made our way down the stairs, to the house a few neighborhoods over.
"Does Stu like me?" Annie asked, as we walked up the foyer, I sucked in a breath hoping she wouldn't ask me that. "Don't say you don't know, yer his best friend."
"I am 'is best friend, but it's been two days, just... Play it cool, ye know? Nobody likes a clingy girl, the best I can recommend is act like he doesn't even exist. It's reverse psychology, works all the time. If ye don't want 'im he'll want ye, it's all in the chase."
"Alright, come 'ed." Annie said, smirking and pulling up her skirt as she walked past me. You'd never expect us to be friends. she was girly and all smiles, all flirts, while I on the other hand was considered 'One-of-the-boys' and haven't worn a skirt since my 3rd year.
"Kat, Annie! Come 'ed in, come on." Ivan said, quickly swinging open the door on our first knock. "Go on, straight to the back. The Quarry Men, are about to play."
"Alri' you lot!" John called settling the crowd, they had been playing some skiffle songs and not much rock'n'roll from what I could see. I watched intently at John's smile, just happy to be on stage, doing what he seemed to like- even love. "Now, let's play some bleedin' rock'n'roll! I 'ope you guys know this one; That'll be the Day, by Buddy Holly! 1, 2, 3!"
"Well, that'll be the day, when you say goodbye
Yes, that'll be the day, when you make me cry
You say you're gonna leave, you know it's a lie
'Cause that'll be the day when I die
Well, you give me all your lovin' and your turtle dovin'
All your hugs and kisses and your money too
Well, you know you love me baby
Until you tell me, maybe
That some day, well I'll be through
Well, that'll be the day, when you say goodbye
Yes, that'll be the day, when you make me cry
You say you're gonna leave, you know it's a lie
'Cause that'll be the day when I die
Well, that'll be the day, when you say goodbye
Yes, that'll be the day, when you make me cry
You say you're gonna leave, you know it's a lie
'Cause that'll be the day when I die
Well, when Cupid shot his dart
He shot it at your heart
So if we ever part and I leave you
You sit and hold me and you tell me boldly
That some day, well I'll be blue" John sang, keeping his eyes on me the whole chours, there was no where else to look and I felt almost singled out. But, as the other couples danced inbetween us, I knew John was trying to send me signals, that he wanted this dance and that it was a damn shame he wasn't getting it.
"Well, that'll be the day, when you say goodbye
Yes, that'll be the day, when you make me cry
You say you're gonna leave, you know it's a lie
'Cause that'll be the day when I die
Well, that'll be the day, hoo-hoo
That'll be the day, hoo-hoo
That'll be the day, hoo-hoo
That'll be the day"
John and the rest of the Quarry Men, put their instruments in their cases and hopped off stage, I tried making my way to John, or at least Stu, but they were quickly swept away from my reach with other classmates and especially Ivan who seemed even more excited then the band itself.
"Here 'ave this, and don't pout. It's not attractive," Annie joked, bringing me a cup full of beer. "So, who in the band were ye droolin' about. Was it Shotton? Maybe yer secret hatred for 'im is really a cover up for yer internal love."
"Yeah right," I said, waving my hand at her, pretty damn close though, I thought to myself. "I'm just suprised that Stu can play that good, I mean I knew he could play, but not play."
"What?! There's stuff you and Stu don't know about each other? I've totally misjudged yer entire friendship. What else could you be doin' if you hang out all the time."
"Listen to music, talk, dance, read, lots of things. Sod off Annie." I joked, as I felt someone behind me, I looked over my shoulder and saw Stu.
"Mind if I steal a dance this time? Inside." Stu asked, a stupid smirk on his face as he moved in between us. I rolled my eyes and quickly coughed out a laugh as Annie almost swooned for my best friend. "Before we go in, come 'ere Kat." Stu, said, leaning over against my ear. "Upstairs, second door on the left."
"Oh! Crap," I said, quickly making an excuse for why Stu had to whisper something and why I had to quickly bolt out of the situation. "Yeah, I almost forgot to ask Ivan about that! I'll see you two later, don't break a hip!" I said, waving as I sped into the house, calming my nerves by grabbing another beer. I made my way up, one step at a time, remembering to breathe as I drank almost the full cup.
"Hey Kat," John smiled softly at me, as I entered the bedroom. "I, d-did-" He started to say, causing a drunken giggle to escape my lips. I walked to his figure, up against the wall and quickly pushed my lips onto his. I felt a swarm of butterflies attack my stomach, dulled by the alcohol. John's arms quickly wrapped around my waist as I pulled back from him, trying to catch our breath, our foreheads touching. Everywhere he touched me manged to come alive and began to spark.
"Yes, I'd love to be yours. And only yours." I said, smiling at him before he pulled me into a soft and gentle kiss, not at all like the one that we just shared, but it was just as amazing; a fire erupted in my body, making my stomach hurt- in an oddly good way, and making me feel as if I was floating.
"Come 'ed." John said, smiling as he bent down to kiss my cheek. "Ye promised me a dance, no matter what!"
"Alright, alri'. You got me." I said holding up my hands and laughing as he pretended to forcefully push me out the door. I laughed, but a nervous laugh, I couldn't dance... Not one bit. Even if a song was playing, I probably couldn't find a beat. "There's nobody 'ere it looks like." I said, as we walked down the steps, there were still a few people, mainly the band and their birds.
"I know, we're not dancin' 'ere." John said, quickly pulling me out the front door, his hand locked tightly on mine as he pulled me down the street, laughing like a little kid as I began to run with him. We missed our road, but I didn't care, I trusted John for some ungodly reason.
"Where are we?" I laughed at the deserted road and quickly shivered. "John, you made me leave me jacket at Ivan's!"
"Aw calm down love, 'ere take mine. Cover up that napkin ye call a shirt. That's no way to get a boy to like... Well, not in a good way.. Is it?" John smirked, as I put his jacket on, it was long and big and warm and smelled like John. I was happy, even after the napkin remark.
"Annie told me to wear it, basically forced it on me, cause I've been single too long." I said, quoting her exact words.
"Well love, yer not single anymore. And I'm not datin' any of those girls cause I don't like 'em. I like you, so stay you. Now, are ye ready to dance?"
"Dance? John we're in an empty street with barely any light and obviously no music." I said, trying to act like I wasn't into it, but I was. It enticed me, John's ideas and his instant ability to make everything seem important or worth doing, even if it wasn't.
"Come 'ere," John said, putting his arms around my waist, I automatically put mine around his neck, returning his smile. "Now," John said taking one of my hands and putting it over his heart. "you 'ear that? That's music, we'll dance to that."
"John," I asked gently as my hips started to sway with his body, one hand on his chest the other wrapped around his neck. "Yer heart is beating too fast if we're just standin' 'ere."
"Sh. You worry to much, just know that's what you do to me. And it's good. Now, dance!" John said twirling me around and pulling me back to him. Pulling me close to him and then doing the weirdest dance moves he could think of, urging me to John in. "No matter where ye are, there's always somethin' to sing or dance or laugh along to, ye've just got to find it."
