Marvin (V.H)
July 14th, 1959. 4:02 pm. Pinky's Dress Shop, Liverpool.
"Does this look good on me?" Mina asks, twirling around.
Juliet and I both shrug.
"You're my older sisters! You're supposed to know!"
I bite my lip. Mina is so... gungho about having sisters, but Juliet and I need sometime to warm up.
"Do you guys not like me?!"
"What?!" I frown. "Of course we do! It's just a little shocking to learn that we even have a little sister."
"And brother! Mike!"
I nod.
Ania, Antoni and Koch all decided that we needed "quality" sibling time. Basically Juliet and I were forced to take Mina shopping. Vincent and Mike are at some university and poor Buddy is stuck in the house with Koch, Ania, and Antoni. I can only imagine what they're talking about.
"Guys!" Mina exclaims. "I can tell you about boys!"
I raise my eyebrows and smile. "Do tell."
"So I told you about my mods, well, friends. You're not too into brit slang yet, yeah?"
I nod. "Lived in America for too long."
"Well, John and Paul are my mates who are in a band and my god they're so good!"
"Yeah?" Juliet asks.
"Yeah! They're huge Holly fans! Huge! We all saw you on your English tour. It was so amazing. I swear they cried."
"Okay..."
"Anyways! Back to my story! So Paul and I have known eachother since forever and we kissed last week! It was so weird but I liked it. I always thought I fancied John but the kiss sort of changed my mind. I dunno if I still like John or if I just like Paul!"
"Well, does Paul like you?"
Mina shrugs. "I don't know! We were sitting on some park bench talking about music and how I wanted to take up drumming when I just kissed him!"
I smirk and look to Juliet.
"Huh, sounds vaguely familiar." Juliet giggles.
"What? Why?" Mina peels off the dress.
"That's essentially is like Buddy and I's first actual kiss."
"Actual?"
"Never mind that part. Just familiar is all." I reply.
"My best friend is called Barb and she and I have talked about how we want a relationship like you and Buddy."
"Oh, uh, no you don't."
"What? Why?"
"It's more than it seems." I mumble.
Juliet's head snaps toward me. "What?! You guys never argue! You're always together and always look like you're in love!"
"Please, not now,"
"Violette! Explain this to me! What has been going on, anyway?"
"We're just in a rough patch because of this Koch stuff." I sigh. "Well, more like I'm in a rough patch and he's just...there."
"Buddy? Just there?"
"He's been dealing with my mood swings. He's looked into some stuff, I guess."
"And?"
"He think's I have Borderline Personality Disorder."
"Oh hush, you do not!"
"No, no I think I do. He made some really good points. We decided I should see a therapist after this."
"We? You mean he decided for you?"
"No, I mean we. I'm the one who brought it up and he agreed."
"I-"
"Juliet, I know that you want to make him into the bad guy, but trust me, he's not."
"I don't!"
"You're my sister, you're supposed to."
"Excuse me?" Mina rolls her eyes. "What's this about?"
"Nothing!" Juliet and I say in unison.
"Well you and Buddy Holly are cute."
"Thank you."
"Do you think he'll fuss if I just call him Buddy?"
I raise an eyebrow. "No? He probably wants you just to call him that."
"Really?!"
"Yeah, of course. I guess he is your brother in law."
Mina grins. "Just wait 'til I tell John and Paul! They're going to have a flip!"
I just smile and nod.
7:53pm
"I-uh- wow." One of the boys say.
"Shut it, Macca, be cool!" The other says, elbowing the first.
Buddy chuckles and extends his right hand. "I'm Buddy."
"Oh! I'm Paul, yeah, Paul."
"I'm John, great t' meet ye."
I smile widely. "I'm Violet, fantastic to meet you!"
They both look almost like greasers. I don't know what they're called here. I heard Mina say 'teddy-boy' earlier, but I can't say I know that she was referring to this style.
"I do like your sound. Very inventive, might I say." Paul nods. "One of my favorites."
"Yeah, mine too." John adds.
Buddy grins and shakes his head. "Y'all're too kind."
"It's very nice of you to meet us in the first place."
"I love meetin' fans."
"You inspired me to start playing guitar, if I'm honest." John nods. "And I styled my glasses after yours."
"Why dontcha show me?" Buddy asks. "Playin', I mean."
"You sure you don't want to see my glasses?" John says sarcastically.
We all laugh. "I dunno, you sure make 'em sound interestin'."
"Here, Mina has my guitar, actually. Can we head to the basement?" John looks to Paul. "Is it okay with you?"
Paul nods. "Yeah, go on."
"Can you give me some pointers, aswell?" John asks Buddy as they walk down the stairs.
"I'm left handed too!" Paul bursts.
I giggle. "Yeah?"
"Yeah! It isn't too fun."
We both sit on the couch. "So, how'd you meet Mina?"
"We were neighbors for a long while, then she moved to this house."
"Ah, okay."
"I take it as she told you that we kissed?"
I nod.
Paul rolls his eyes. "Sisters always do that."
"Well, do you like her?"
"Do you mean fancy?"
"Yeah, that."
Paul purses his lips. "Yes."
"You should ask her on a date. Really, you should."
"She fancies me back?!"
I bite my lip. "Just do it."
"But-"
"Do it!"
"Fine!" He scowls. "You look just like her."
"Stop trying to change the subject!"
"She does though!"
"No! I'm taller than her and my hair is longer and I'm older!"
Paul snorts. "Whatever!"
We both laugh. I've known this kid for twenty minutes and I alreay understand why she likes him. He seems like the type I'd have a crush on back when I was a teen.
January 10th, 1952. 12:44pm. Bowen High School, Chicago.
"Hush!" I shove Debbie. "I don't want him hearing you!"
"Oh! Why? Do you not want MARVIN knowing that you LIKE him!?"
I feel my face burning hot. "Shut up!"
"Hey, Marvin!" Debbie calls.
Marvin looks over to us and raises an eyebrow.
"Come here!"
He shrugs and walks over to us. "Hey, Vi, Debbie."
I know my face has to be redder than a beet. "H-hey!"
"You guys know eachother, yeah?" Debbie smiles.
Marvin smiles. "Yeah, of course I know the infamous Violet. She always was the smartest in our French class!"
I feel my heart stop. He called me smart!
"Yeah, of course." Debbie pretends to check her watch. "Oh! I gotta go meet Rosie for lunch, I'll leave you two alone." She winks at me and scurries away.
Marvin chuckles. "She's quite the character."
I slowly nod.
"You're awful quiet."
"Oh, sorry," I mumble.
"Well, do you have any plans for after school?" He rubs the back of his neck.
I shake my head.
"Well, um, I was thinking about seeing if you wanted to go to the malt shop with me? If you want to, of course."
My jaw drops. MARVIN JUST ASKED MME TO THE MALT SHOP?!
He blinks hard. "I'm sorry, I shouldn't have asked. I'm sorry, I'll go," he turns to walk away.
I grab his arm. "Wait!"
He turns back around. "Yeah?"
"I'd LOVE to go to the malt shop with you." I smile. "Love to."
"Really? Neat! Can I meet you at your locker?
"Yeah, of course, it's number 472 in the east wing, by Ms. Jolt's room."
"Great! Really. Neat. I can't wait." He smiles. "I'll see you then."
I let go of him and he walks away.
I turn and run to Debbie and Rosie's normal table. "Marvin asked me to get malts with him after school!"
Debbie smirks. "Did he?"
"YES!"
"Well, thanks to a certain best friend he even talked to you in the first place."
September 20th, 1952. 5:21pm. The Winter Household.
I pick up the ringing phone."Hello?"
"Violet, it's Marvin. How's Lubbock?"
I smile. "It's okay, it's just weird. Culture shock and all."
"Yeah. I get it. Make any friends?"
"Yes! Adalyn Ainsley and Buddy Holley are my best ones. We do everything together."
"Buddy?"
"Yeah, he's super cool! You'd love him. He plays guitar and sings and he's so good!"
"Vi, sounds like you like him."
I blush. "No! Marvin, I don't."
"Hey, it's okay. We're broken up, though I wish you were still here so I could still kiss you."
"What?"
"I wish you didn't move."
"Me too." I sigh. "It's so weird without you.
"I miss you and I miss the malt shops, babe."
"I miss you too, Marvy." I blush.
"Hey, Vi, I love you." Marvin says quietly.
My heart starts to beat faster. "I...I love you too."
"I wrote you a couple letters, have you gotten 'em yet?"
I glance at the two closed envelopes. I've gotten them, but I haven't read them. I'm too scared that I'll be even more home sick. I don't know what I feel anymore. I really liked being with Marvin in Chicago, but we broke up because I was moving. Now I'm here and I think I have a crush on another guy.
"No, I haven't gotten any letters yet." I mumble.
"That's a shame, pretty lady. Are you ever going to visit back here?"
"I hope so." I smile. "I miss you guys so much."
"We miss you too, Violet. We miss you a lot."
I look down. He still doesn't know that I slept with Adam. The only reason I did it is because I thought it would help me get over Marvin. It didn't. If anything, it made me like Marvin even more.
"Vi, baby, I gotta go, baby. I'll call you soon, okay?"
I nod. "Okay Marvy. I miss you."
"You too, babe. I'll talk to you later."
"Bye..."
"Bye, pretty lady."
I hang up the phone.
Do I actually want to see him again?
