11: The Start of Something Greater
God of Heroes and Guardians... Percy thought. Not really surprised there. But where did Heir to Poseidon come from? Oh yeah, we kinda made that deal a while ago. Huh, wonder how that will work if I'm technically the King too...
Goddess of the between. Kat thought. What the Hades does that mean? And Heir to Neptune definitely means I'm Roman. Huh, guess I'm the Roman queen. Weird.
Simultaneously, both twins glanced over to their father who looked both incredibly proud and horribly confused. They gained matching smirks.
The crowd of gods left the chant hanging in the air as a lingering memory. They whispered among each other as they left, the great golden doors wide open. Gods liked gossip. Annabeth slipped through the crowd immediately, and looped her arm through Percy's. A moment after she'd taken her place, Poseidon stood in front of the twins.
The twins smiled awkwardly. "Hey Dad." They both said in unison, with the same tone. Annabeth stifled a laugh at the twins and Poseidon's face.
"Um." Poseidon said.
"Yeah." The twins said in unison, yet again.
Poseidon looked between them, his eyebrows scrunched into a unibrow in his confusion. "So..."
Annabeth laughed. All three sea-blooded looked to her. "What? It's not like you're all strangers."
They chuckled at themselves. Poseidon looked at Kat. "So, I have a daughter now?"
"Yep, sure seems like it." Kat said.
Poseidon looked between the two of them, noting everything that was similar, and all that was different. Among the same, was the natural hair, eyes, skin, posture, attitude, facial expressions, and if what he'd heard was anything to go by, their thought process and speech patterns. What was different besides the obvious male and female distinction he found, Percy had a grey streak that Katha did not bear, and Percy did not have blue. Percy had scars, whereas Katha's skin was unmarred. Percy had the Legion's mark and Katha had her entire forearm bearing roses. Poseidon noted that while roses were beautiful, they also had sharp thorns. He thought it was fitting for a child of his.
"Technically, I think I'm roman. Which means that I'm a daughter of Neptune? Right?" Kat said.
The sea god nodded. "There isn't much of a difference between my aspects. My Greek self is more... Relaxed, I guess. My Roman self is a bit more war-like, and less loved. Romans were stupid. The assholes could've done a lot more conquering if they weren't so scared of me."
"It didn't help that when they were already scared of the seas, you got upset and made it worse." Hades said as he joined them.
"I did not get upset." Poseidon said defensively.
"So you are not currently pouting, then?" Hades raised an eyebrow.
The three young ones grinned. Percy leaned down and gave Annabeth a quick kiss. Katha turned away. She felt a wave of cold wash down her spine. She gave an apologetic smile. "Uh, sorry, I've got to go."
"Bye Kat." Percy and Annabeth said.
"Goodbye Katha." Poseidon said softly. Hades gave a respectful, familiar nod.
Just after Katha vapour traveled away, Percy turned to Hades with a question.
~~~~~~
Katha sat down on the couch staring straight ahead, taking no notice of the world around her. Percy and Annabeth are soulmates. But if I'm a part of Percy's soul, will I ever find my own? What If I'm alone forever?
Loki felt Katha's presence return to the farmhouse. He quickly made his way to her. He wasn't expecting to see her all dressed up. For a long moment, he was stopped in his tracks and his breath caught in his throat.
Normally, she looked just like an attractive woman. Now she looked every bit the goddess she was. She was grace, elegance, and power in physical form.
If Thor had seen him now, his brother would laugh, and give him a hearty slap on the back, and tease him about it later. His mother would give him a knowing smile. Loki had seen some beautiful maidens in his time, but this was the first one to actually make him falter in his step.
When Loki regained his senses, he realized that she was retreating into her mind. He walked the remaining distance between them and sat down beside her. He gently placed a hand to the side of her head, and focused his magic to bring her back.
She blinked a few times, the world coming into focus in front of her. Her eyes stung, and a few tears slipped out. Startled, she brought her hands up to wipe the trails away. It was that movement that brought it to her attention that she wasn't alone.
Loki's hand calmly withdrew from where it had been, and rested on his lap. "Are you alright?"
Kat took a breath in, and out. She shrugged. "I just had a thought."
Loki nodded. He didn't need to pry. "Well, you are at least wearing proper clothes now."
She snorted. "And I wasn't wearing clothes before?"
"I hardly see how you could call those pieces of odd cloth 'clothes'." Loki said lightly.
"Hey, I can always wear less." Kat said, before she realized how that might sound.
"And I would appreciate the view." Loki replied casually, a smirk in place.
Dammit. That's what kind of comebacks she'd pranked him for. "Like you appreciated the tube top?" She countered.
Loki frowned for a second. Then he gestured with a few fingers, making a band around his own chest.
"Yeah, the blue one. With the sparklies." Kat nodded. "That prank was so worth it."
"You did that on purpose?" Loki asked, aghast. She had tricked the god of tricks?
"Oh yeah, I did." Kat grinned.
Loki scoffed, and turned away. When he heard her laugh lightly, he felt a moment of victory. He turned back. "So, what happened that got you to actually look beautiful?"
"What, I don't look beautiful normally?" Kat voiced indignantly.
"Not in those scraps." Loki replied.
"Oh, you're one to talk, Mr. I'd-Still-Look-Hot-In-Old-Sweatpants." Kat bantered.
Loki smirked. He'd been on midgard enough to know what 'hot' meant when used in this way. Kat sighed. "You won that, didn't you?"
"I did." Loki said smugly. Kat sighed again.
They drifted off into companionable silence. Kat broke it, speaking quietly. "The Fates gave me and Percy our godly titles."
Loki's eyes widened. "Oh?"
"Goddess of the between, keeper of the dog of war, heir to Neptune." She said.
Loki breathed out an air of astonishment. "That is... Quite the domain, Ylva."
"Really? 'Cause I've got no freaking clue." Kat asked.
Loki gaped for a second. "Between. Your entire domain is 'between', but was it specified between what? Between anything? The space between here and there? The time between now and then?"
Kat's eyes widened. "Oh damn."
"'Oh damn' exactly." Loki said. "You will be quite formidable when you learn what you can do, Ylva."
"Yeah. Now I have to figure that out." Kat grumbled.
Loki's head was spinning with all the possibilities. Kat yawned beside him. She tilted her head, and let it rest on Loki's shoulder.
"That was exhausting. I talked to Percy, and Poseidon, and Annabeth was there, and all the gods..." Kat trailed off. "...I wanna sleep."
Loki didn't know what to say to that.
"Y'know, it's almost Christmas." Kat said sleepily. "We should go to the tower."
Loki decided to ignore the 'we' for the moment. "You think you are ready for the tower?"
"I can handle Percy just fine, and he was the biggest thing, right?" She mumbled.
"He was." Loki said.
Kat hummed in reply, and went quiet. It took Loki a moment, but he realized she had fallen asleep. On his shoulder.
Loki froze for a minute, and in that time he heard light footsteps, and saw Clint leaning against the door frame. The archer's arms were crossed over his chest.
The scrutinizing glare the archer sent him brought the prince back to his senses. Loki calmly slipped his arm behind Kat's shoulders, and his other underneath her knees, and gracefully scooped her into his arms without jostling or waking her.
Ignoring the archer, he walked past and up the stairs. With a thought and some magic, the door to her room opened, and he carefully laid her down on her bed. He took the folded quilt from the foot of it and draped it over her.
The prince only took a second to take in the image of her peaceful face before silently leaving. The uncle watched him walk into his own room. Clint looked into her room, and closed the door.
'I might'. The uncle thought. There was a lot more to that god than he had first thought.
~~~~~~
The next morning after he and Kat had been given titles, Percy was on his usual morning jog with Steve. Both far surpassed anyone normal, and having someone that could be normal with them while not having to pretend to be someone else was a saving grace.
Everything was going great until they came to a crowd. Percy didn't know why there was a crowd, and he didn't care. But Steve did, and that was a problem. Percy pulled the man out of the crowd, and into a side alley that was empty.
Percy recognized a panic attack when he saw one. He helped Steve as much as he could. The man reached for a pocket, and upon finding nothing, he turned to his side as if expecting to see someone. When he didn't see whoever he had expected to, Percy saw tears form in his eyes.
Steve was struggling to breathe, and Percy had to kneel in front of him. It took some time, but eventually Percy got Steve calmed down. "Hey, your apartment is close, right?" He asked Steve.
Steve nodded, and led Percy to his place. They passed a nurse on her way to work, and Steve gave her a little wave. Percy mentally shrugged, and waved too. The nurse gave Steve a soft smile, and when she noted Percy, he saw a quick analytic gaze.
Steve's apartment was nice. Sure, he had a room at the tower, but this was his space away from everybody. Percy noted just how much newer technology there was, and how much must have been from the forties.
Steve went to the bathroom to freshen up. Percy wandered into the living room. A smile graced his face as he took in the art supplies neatly organized where gaming stations would usually be. On the coffee table were several sketches, and Percy couldn't stifle his curiosity.
The first that he saw was one of what must be a pre-serum Steve in the foreground, and in the background a much lighter drawn post-serum Steve.
The second that he saw was one of a woman, dressed in a higher ranking military uniform from back in the day. She looked like the kind of person who would sigh when you did something, and either get you promoted or send you to the principle's office to be doomed.
The third was a different woman, and she had a warm smile, crinkles at the corners of her eyes that said she smiled a lot. She seemed familiar, and then at the bottom of the page, he understood why. Sarah Rogers. Steve's mom.
The fourth took Percy by surprise. It was him, slumped against his dad. The detail was amazing, just like in all the other sketches. Percy swallowed a lump in his throat with great difficulty.
"Oh." Steve said when he saw Percy.
Percy looked up. Steve looked awkward. "I forgot I had those out."
"They're amazing." Percy said softly.
"Well, I don't know about that." Steve shuffled over to the couch Percy was sitting on.
"No, don't doubt yourself. This is talent, or skill, or something, but it's great." Percy said genuinely.
Steve didn't have a reply to that. Percy shyly spoke up. "Um. Can I... Can I keep this?"
Steve didn't know what to think about someone wanting his art. The last person who had... "Uh, yeah, sure."
"Thanks." Percy said.
They both fell silent.
"I'm sorry about that." Steve said.
"You've got nothing to be sorry for, Steve." Percy said.
Steve felt like he had to explain himself. "It's just that I used to have asthma. And I was so small that the crowds would just... Swallow me. Before, when it happened, I wasn't alone. Buc- Bucky would help me. He'd do what you did. But I couldn't breathe and I would forget my inhaler, but he'd have it. And earlier, it was like I had gone back in time. But he wasn't there and..." Steve trailed off, tears stinging his eyes again.
Percy rubbed his back.
"He died. It's been seventy years. But to me, he died just a couple months ago. Some days I wake up, expecting to see him across the room. But he's not there. And then I remember that he won't be. I won't see him again."
Percy noticed another sketch. Placing the one of himself and his father down, he picked up the new image. Percy wouldn't know that this was the image Steve had been working on the last time Percy was stuck in the infirmary.
"That's-" Steve started to say.
"Bucky." Percy finished.
Steve gave him an odd look.
"I uh, did some reading about you. Back in the day." Percy said sheepishly.
Steve let out a small burst of laughter, shaking his head.
Percy thought for a moment. He tried to think about the better option was. And he made up his mind. "Steve. A while back, I had a vision."
Steve listened interestedly, grateful for what he thought would be a distraction.
"It was Kat, and you and some other guy. I didn't think about it for a while because shit happened, but eventually I thought about it again. And I tried to figure out who it was. When I did, something was weird. So I talked to my uncle, Hades. And then my dad."
"Why would you go to Hades?"
"Because the world thinks Bucky Barnes is dead." Percy said. "But he isn't."
Steve's eyes widened. "What..."
"Bucky Barnes is alive."
"He's alive?" Steve whispered.
"He is. And I'm going to help you find him." Percy said.
"Why... You don't have to do that." Steve said, his mind spinning.
"Yeah, I do. Not only is he important to me because he's your best friend, and you are my friend... But he's my brother too."
~~~~~~
The Fates stood next to each other, all three holding a strand of thread in each hand.
The first Fate held one of light blue skies and the sunlight shifting through the leaves of trees, and a second of a pale blue-green like a clean, calm lake.
The second Fate held one of grey, like a layer of dust settled across books or the clouds before a storm, the second strand was only half as thick, and was a sea-green like the crystalline ocean.
The third Fate held one strand that matched the sea-green thread, that was just as thin as the other- perhaps they were halves of the same thread, pulled apart. The second one that she held was a deep, rich forest green like luscious evergreen trees full of life.
"Is it time?" The Fates asked.
"Not yet," The Norns replied.
"But we've waited so long." The Fates said.
"And we can wait just a bit more." The Norns answered.
A/N
I told ya'll I have plans.
