Chapter 2 - Heart of an Apprentice

As we entered ThunderClan's camp, I felt the curious and hostile looks of the other ThunderClan cats burning my pelt. I avoided eye contact as much as possible, and only looked up when Strikestar stopped.

"Wait here," he meowed as he leaped up the Highrock.

"Let all cats who are old enough to catch prey gather at the Highrock for a Clan meeting." Strikestar's voice was loud and confident.

The Clan gathered quickly, waiting expectantly for an explanation. I tried not to fidget as their gazes rested on the four of us.

"You must be wondering why I have allowed four rogues in our camp," Strikestar began. "I assure you that I have a good reason for this."

"StarClan has sent me a sign that four strange cats would come and free us from ShadowClan's threat," he explained. It caused the Clan to discuss among themselves.

I felt uncomfortable from all the attention and tried to keep my cool.

"How can you be sure that they are the ones?" a warrior asked.

"They look exactly like the ones from my dream," Strikestar responded calmly. "Anymore doubts?"

This time, no cat protested. I could tell that they were desperate. Is ShadowClan that powerful? I wondered. How about the other Clans?

Strikestar looked satisfied. "Please step foward," he told us.

I stepped forward first, quivering in anticipation. His eyes were warmth yet strict as he spoke. "From this moment on, you will be known as Frostpaw. Streamripple, you are a swift and loyal warrior. Pass these onto young Frostpaw."

Trembling with unspoken joy, I padded to one side, watching the rest of the ceremony.

The grey tabby tom stepped forward, looking nervous but determined. Strikestar paused, as if he was thinking of a suitable name for him.

"From this moment on, you will be known as Stormpaw," he announced. "Blackfur, you are an independent and experienced warrior. Teach your new apprentice well."

Strikestar turned to the white she-cat with green eyes. "From this moment on, you will be known as Rosepaw. Lightbreeze, you are a young yet cool headed warrior. Pass these qualities onto Rosepaw."

Finally, the ThunderClan leader turned to the brown spotted she-cat. "From this moment on, you will be known as Spottedpaw. Cinderflame, your skill in battle is remarkable. Pass it onto Spottedpaw."

The Clan then started to call our new names. At first it was soft and hesitant, but gradually, more joined in.

"Frostpaw! Stormpaw! Rosepaw! Spottedpaw!" I took a deep breath as I gazed over the crowd of ThunderClan cats. I am a part of them now.

The next day, Streamripple led me to a tour of ThunderClan territory, even though I pretty much know some of it.

"Stay close to me," she mewed. "We are going towards the Thunderpath. If you are not careful, a monster might hit you."

I nodded and followed her, trying not to stumble over hidden branches. It was weird moving on four paws, but I somehow managed it.

Streamripple stopped and lifted her nose, as if she caught a suspicious scent. "ShadowClan," she hissed in a low voice.

I craned my neck and spotted unknown cats prowling in our territory.

Her face was deadly serious as she faced me. "Frostpaw, run to camp. Tell the Clan that we are being invaded. Now!"

"I-I can't just leave you to fight them alone!" I gasped.

"I will distract them," Streamripple meowed. "Now go!"

Without another word, I broke into a run. There was no time for me to think where to put my paws. The only thought in my mind was to warn my Clan in time. If I failed, ThunderClan could fall.

My paws seemed to have a mind of their own, moving so quick and rapid that I felt that I was flying.

I crashed through the camp entrance and skidded to a stop into the middle of the clearing, where some cats were sharing tongues.

"ShadowClan!" I yowled.

One of the cats immediately leaped to his paws. He must be Woodspots, the deputy.

"I want Antfall, Ripplesnow and Featherheart to come with me to intercept the ShadowClan invaders. The rest of you, stay in camp and prepare for battle," Woodspots' authoritative voice calmed the Clan down and they hurried to their tasks.

Streamripple is still out there! I thought in dismay. I can't rest while I know that my mentor is in danger!

I knew what to do. I would be like the clichéd apprentices in those "silly" fanfictions.

I'm going to save my mentor.
