The Failure
Author: _CutieChick_
Genre: Short story/lit
What I liked about this book:
The descriptions in this story are really well thought out. I can see and sense and even smell where I am. There are a lot of well placed cultural references to the story--which is set in Pakistan--and it's done very well. It's easy to read and flows really nicely.
It was short, and didn't take me long to get through. Yousef is an interesting and somewhat engaging character that it was nice to get to know.
What I did NOT like about this book:
This story needs to decide what it's about: the grades, the arranged marriage, or the sort-of fiance. It's got too many plotlines going on, and they got muddled. I either want a direct path from A to B (Yousef feels inadequate and here's why) or for the author to pick one of those plotlines.
It's also very telly in places. Show me what the mother and father are like, don't tell me about them and expect me to just buy it. In places this was done well, in others it was not.
Overall:
This would be very good with some polishing.
Rating:
7/10. It was an easy and enjoyable read but needs some work.
