Chapter 18

Essentially, there was no reason for my absence, but hey, I'm back now. I'll make sure to finish this book soon enough...

Gold had once been Silver's most cherished friend. To be fair, Silver had betrayed him for what he thought was for his father's benifit, so it made sense as to why they didn't get along very well afterwards. But now, he and Gold were on good terms. When both of them went back in time to save (y/n) from that fateful day on the tower, they got back on good terms.

Now Gold was risking his life for him a second time in a faceoff against Mewtwo. Not even Crystal was aware that Gold had tried fighting the psychic pokémon once before. Silver had not bothered to help at that time because Mewtwo had been after his life. The condition was the same with the only difference being where Silver's alligence was. He wouldn't let Gold get harmed, but something told him that it wasn't the time to step in just yet.

For now, he could only watch, but just in case Gold would need his help, he let Crystal take his place to keep Red's stability. The girl had been oddly silent and watched Gold with worry as he stood up to such a dangerous pokémon. Mewtwo struck first sending several shots of Shadow Ball at him. Luckily, Reshiram negated most of the attacks with Flamethrower and Typhloshion dodged the remaining few that made it through.

"Don't think you're going to win this!" Gold shouted as he took a few steps back to give his Typhlosion some room to battle alongside Reshiram. The Cyndaquil that he'd cherished so much had finally been allowed to evolve and was indeed a formidable force. "As amusing as it would be to crush you first, I have an order and you aren't of any interest at the moment. Move aside before I decide not to delay your annihilation," Mewtwo growled.

"Your opponent is me right now. You're the one who'll be annihilated! Typhloshion, do that thing we practiced!" Gold said. Silver watched in surprise as Gold's pokémon used Double Team followed by Ember and then Double Team again. It was a brilliant tactic especially since no one could tell which after image was the real Typhlosion. Mewtwo was forced to dodge the continuous attacks or take the ones he couldn't predict in time.

"Now, Reshiram, there's your chance!" Gold said. Mewtwo was aware that Reshiram was about to attack thanks to Gold, but it was all a trap. Mewtwo moved to avoid Reshiram's blast of fire. Typhloshion immediately followed up with Flame Wheel and hit Mewtwo without fail. The psychic type pokémon staggered back from the impact and glared at Gold, enraged by his success.

"You're just a mere human! I will not fall to the likes of you!" Mewtwo retaliated with Psycho Cut. It wasn't aimed at any pokémon at all and Gold hadn't realized this until it was nearly too late. Much to Silver's relief, Gold managed to duck and roll out of the way to avoid any harm, but Mewtwo's actions had put everyone on edge. Mewtwo was not hesitant in directly attacking people with his power. That had been somewhat known before, but it was now clear as day.

Silver kept his Totodile on hand just in case he'd need to join the fight. His pokémon may have been in its first evolutionary form, but he was strong enough to win some of the toughest battles. For the time being, it didn't seem like he would need to join in. Gold was holding Mewtwo off on his own with Reshiram's help. His Double Team paired with Ember was doing some pretty consistently gradual damage while Reshiram kept Mewtwo busy by drawing in most of the attacks and retaliating.

In a rather remarkable standoff, Gold was forcing Mewtwo into backing down. The psychic pokémon attempted to attack Gold again, but this time Typhlosion purposely took the hit for his beloved trainer. Gold wouldn't have been able to dodge the attack, but he didn't seem very content with having avoided it that way. "You foolish human! I will not lose to you!"

Mewtwo suddenly began to glow and a large amount of energy began to take shape in front of him. Even their surroundings morphed into a dangerous zone of pure psychic power. "Gold, get away from there!" Silver called, but Gold remained still. The power Mewtwo had gathered formed a sphere and swirled with color. "I can't! I can't move!" Gold yelped. Mewtwo had not possessed such a powerful attack the last time they had met.

Silver didn't know how he was going to do it, but he would stop Mewtwo from harming Gold. An attack on that scale would certainly kill him. The injury would get infected or he'd bleed out before they could reach a pokémon center if the impact of the blast didn't end his life. He couldn't let that happen especially since Gold was once again protecting him from Mewtwo. Before he could act on impulse, he heard (y/n)'s voice. "Reshiram! Use Fusion Flare!"

Reshiram seemed to already be glowing before (y/n) spoke those words. The legendary's tail had started to charge with a luminous orange color. Mewtwo didn't seem surprised that Reshiram had followed (y/n)'s order. Flames suddenly gathered from thin air and the snow around Reshiram rapidly melted away. The light breeze of heat was pleasant, but it wasn't enough to distract them from the array of warm colors present in the flames that Reshiram produced.

Just as Mewtwo released all of that gathered psychic energy, Reshiram shot the flames forth to intercept it. The two attacks collided, their colors mixing to form an odd interaction, and canceled one another out for just a moment. In that moment, Gold staggered backwards and into the snow. His Typhloshion lept to his side and Crystal could be heard warning them to get down.

There was no time. The blast resulting from the collision shook the ground and a shockwave radiated from the center of the colliding forces. Silver was thrown into the snow by its force and layers of that same snow scattered through the air. A sharp pain shot though him from a source unknown and he felt dizzy. His vision blacked out a few times as well. "Silver! Silver, come on wake up!" the voice said. It didn't belong to (y/n).

Silver regained his focus seeing Crystal sitting in front of him on her knees. She had a hand on his shoulder from where she tried to wake him. "Crystal, what...what happened?" he asked as he began to stand. "(Y/n) won't wake up and Red's not breathing. I don't know where Gold is. I can't see him from here," Crystal sobbed. Silver hadn't even noticed that she was crying, but her words caught his attention more than her tears did.

"What do you mean he's not breathing?!" Silver spoke in alarm as he tried to locate his friend. Red was partially covered in snow near (y/n) who seemed unconscious just as Crystal had reported. Red was in the most danger, so Silver stumbled towards him and fell to his knees once he got to him. "Red, no, don't you dare die on me. Come on, this isn't fair," Silver said. Not long after he spoke, Tabunne broke free of her pokéball and immediately made her way to them.

Silver was relieved to see the healing pokémon. Tabunne seemed worried as she did a check on Red's vitals. The area was a mess with snow melting everywhere and small fires still present where the burried vegetation remained. Crystal had gone near a fallen Reshiram searching for Gold in the snow. It was meant for Silver to look in that direction for he could see Pika returning. He had forgotten that Red's pokémon had gone ahead of them in excitement.

Silver watched as Pika used Quick Attack to reach them before standing atop Red's chest. Tabunne seemed to say something to Pika who acted immediately. Silver was surprised when Tabunne pulled him away from Red but he soon understood why when Pika began to erupt into electricity. Pika swatted at Red's face in an attempt to wake him, but got no response. With no hesitation, Pika shocked Red again and this time, a response was certainly recieved.

Red's hand twitched a bit and he went in and out of conciousness. It wasn't a good condition, but Silver was relieved that Red was at least alive. "Tabunne, please take care of Red and (y/n) for me. I need to look for Gold," Silver requested. Tabunne nodded and continued her work of healing, leaving Silver to join Crystal in her search.

"Silver, I can't find him. I still can't find him," Crystal sobbed. She was frantically digging in the melting snow around Reshiram. It was clear that logic was not on her mind as she did so. Silver instead walked past her and towards where Mewtwo would have been standing. He froze and a look of pure devastation adorned his feature. "Gold..." Silver muttered.

He lay in the small crater that was left behind by the collision of Reshiram's and Mewtwo's attacks, but Silver was sure he hadn't been that close to it. There was no snow, just rock and blood. Just one look and Silver knew that Tabunne wouldn't have enough energy to heal him. "Gold..." Silver whimpered again. He walked to the center of the crater seeing that Gold stared straight up into the sky.

"He got away. I almost...I was so close..." Gold said. His Typhlosion was nowhere within sight. Numerous cuts littered his body, likely the result of being hit by Psycho Cut. "Don't speak. Don't say anything. Save whatever energy you have. I'm going to get you some help," Silver rambled. Gold stared up at him and slightly smiled. "I kind of...envy you. But I'm glad...he didn't harm you. I'm sorry...I didn't win," Gold said as his smile changed to a sad one. Tears began to form at the edges of his eyes.

"Gold, I'm not letting you die. Stop talking like that. Don't you dare start saying any last words, and stop that. Don't give me that look. (Y/n) did that too when she went up that tower the first time. I can't lose anybody else. Please, Gold don't you dare," Silver cried. There were still things Silver wanted to apologize for and things he wanted Gold to do. He still hadn't gotten the chance to be his rival in the gym challenge, a promise he had intended to make before all of these events took place.

"I saw a pretty light...in the sky. It was...it was after he left. A light...it was there...coming this way," Gold said. "Shut up! Shut up, shut up, shut up, you idiot! There is no light. You're staying here! I'm not letting you leave, not now, not ever!" Silver snapped. He heard Crystal cry out in distress, likely having gotten over her hysterical phase, as she spotted him with Gold.

"It spoke to me...said that...everything was okay. I'm...I'm going to be...okay," Gold continued to say. He clearly ignored Silver's earnest request for him to stop talking. "I know. I know, you're right. You're okay," Silver said with a nod. Gold's eyes began to lose their glimmer of life and the boy fell silent. Silver felt his heart shatter again having lost count of the times he'd felt so torn. Then it happened. The light arrived.
