21: Until I Met You
Chapter 21
“Jessalyn, someone’s here to see you.” my mom announced, making both mine and Olivia’s face turn into masks of confusion.
I pushed myself up off of the couch and walked quickly into the entryway. “Who could be here to see me…” I questioned, trailing off as I rounded the corner and his body came into view. “Cason?”
Cason, who had his hands in his pockets and had his head down, immediately snapped his head up as he heard his name. Sending a friendly smile my way, he lifted one of his hands out of his pocket and waved slightly. “Hey.” he replied, leaving me as confused as ever as to the reason behind his sudden appearance.
“Hi…” I replied in a puzzled tone. In my peripheral vision, I could see that my mom was making her way back upstairs to leave us to talk alone. “Uh, what are you doing here?”
“Well, I happened to be bored out of my mind at the moment and I thought that now would be a perfect time to ease you into being a little more friendly and social with people. You know, take that next step in breaking you out of your shell.” he replied nonchalantly, shrugging his shoulders as though it was every day that he showed up at my front door.
“Oh, um…” I stumbled, not really knowing what to say, however, before I could utter another word, I was interrupted by Olivia coming to check what was going on.
“Hey Jessalyn, what’s taking so long?” she asked, her voice trailing towards the entryway. As she finished her question, she turned the corner and her eyes latched onto Cason. “Oh, hey Cason, what are you doing here?” she asked.
Cason, who realized that I wasn’t alone at the moment, looked surprised to see Olivia for a second before his facial expression returned to normal. “Oh, sorry, I thought that you would’ve left by now.” he apologized, obviously thinking he was interrupting our girl’s day. “Forget about what I said Jessa, I’ll see you guys at school on Monday.”
“Wait.” Olivia said, just as Cason was about to turn around and walk back home. “What did you come over here for?” she asked curiously, her head tilting slightly to the side as though she was a lost and confused puppy.
“Oh,” he responded, rubbing the back of his neck in slight discomfort. “I was just gonna take Jessa out for lunch, but I didn’t know you guys were hanging out so I’ll just go.”
Olivia smiled at him, glancing my way quickly before shaking her head and returning her gaze to Cason. “Actually, I was just about to leave so, you guys are free to hang out and do whatever you want.” she told him with a smile on her face.
As her words registered in my mind, I turned my head quickly to look at her and somehow managing not to strain my neck. Before I could say anything though, Cason replied to Olivia.
“Really?” he asked skeptically.
Olivia nodded in confirmation, throwing me off guard as to what the hell she thought she was doing. “Yea, I just have to go and get a couple of things that I left upstairs in Jessalyn’s room and then I’m out of your guys hair and you’re free to go out to lunch.” she replied with a smile on her face, as though she was completely okay with leaving abruptly. “We’ll be right back.” she stated quickly before grabbing my hand quickly and pulling me up the stairs, not letting go until we reached my room and she had the door shut behind us.
“What were you talking about down there Liv?” I asked quickly in a hushed tone so that my voice wouldn’t echo downstairs. “You weren’t leaving and, now that you apparently are, how are you supposed to get home?”
Olivia used her hands to motion for me to calm down a couple of times and, as I let myself cool down a bit, Olivia started to explain. “Well, I figured that if he wanted to take you out on a lunch date, why should I stand in the way?” she stated.
My eyes bulged for a second at her statement before a round of giggles burst out of me. “Cason… and… I… aren’t going… on a… date.” I replied through my laughter, not able to get another word out before I took a couple deep breaths and calmed down. “As I said, Cason didn’t mean he wanted to take me out to lunch as a date. He’s helping me break out of my shell a bit and he must think that what he planned to do could help with that.” I explained.
“Oh,” Olivia responded, looking slightly put down for a second before she was back to her cheery self. “Well, I’ll still let you guys go on your little lunch time adventure. I can pack up my stuff in the next couple minutes and by the time you get back I’ll be long gone.” she suggested, gesturing to her spare clothes and her brush that were still lying around my room.
I bit my lip nervously; afraid she would get mad at me for ditching her to hang out with Cason. “Are you completely sure you’re okay with this. I don’t have to go if you wanted to continue watching the movie downstairs or something…” I trailed, babbling on as my nerves started to build up at my best friend getting angry with me.
My babbling was cut off abruptly as Olivia planted her hand on top of my mouth. “Are you good now?” she asked and I nodded embarrassedly at my rambling. “Okay, first of all, I was the one that suggested you going and, second of all, I really don’t mind at all. Go have fun.”
I smiled at her and gave her a quick hug. As I pulled back, I said, “If you don’t want to walk home or your mom can’t pick you up, don’t hesitate to ask my mom for a ride home. I’m sure she’ll do it without a thought.”
Olivia nodded in acceptance. “Okay, no get your butt downstairs before adventure boy leaves without you.” she replied, pushing my ass out my bedroom door.
As I crossed the threshold of my bedroom and stepped foot into the hallway, I turned around slightly to look back at Olivia, a slightly guilty expression on my face.
Before the words could come out of my mouth, Olivia was already rolling her eyes and shooing me out of my own room. “Go.” she begged, smiling widely at me.
I rolled my eyes at her psychic response before sending her one last quick smile and heading down the stairs to meet up with Cason.
As my feet reached the bottom of the stairs, I saw Cason finishing up a text before slipping his phone back into his pocket.
“So,” Cason started, raising one of his eyebrows. “Are you good to go now or are you coming down here to tell me that I should just get lost?” he asked, somewhat sarcastically.
I shook my head, slightly amused at his question as I refrained myself from rolling my eyes. “Apparently, I am good to go on this little lunch time adventure you have planned for today.” I replied, with a small smile etched onto my face.
At my response, Cason smiled and nodded. “Okay, well let’s go.” he said, nodding to the front door, which he had obviously closed while I was upstairs to keep the house from overheating.
I nodded in response, slipping my feet into my flip flops quickly before heading towards the door, which Cason was so kindly holding open. Before I actually stepped out the door, I realized that I hadn’t told my mom what was going on.
Turning around quickly, I jogged to the bottom of the staircase and started to yell up to my mom. “Mom!” I said, but couldn’t get another word in before I heard her voice responding back to me.
“It’s okay honey! Go with Cason and have a good time.” she told me, all while I couldn’t see her voice as she was concealed in her room. “Oh, and text me if you won’t be home for dinner.” she added as an after-thought, leaving me a tad bit confused as to how she knew what was going on.
“Okay.” I muttered lowly, shaking my head of her quick response as I turned back around, only to see Cason with a small smirk on his face.
He raised his eyebrow in amusement once again. “Now are you good to go?” he asked, repeating the question he had asked just minutes before.
“Yes, now I’m good.” I replied, my smart tone laced with a tad of sarcasm.
Although I had said I was ready to go, I actually hadn’t moved from the spot my feet were planted in. Cason looked at me with an amusing smile on his face and gestured for me to walk through the front door, which he was still holding open for me. “After you.” he said, speaking as though he was a posh door man.
Rolling my eyes at his playful and childish behaviour, I walked forward, holding the door for myself as I pushed him out of the house in front of me. “Just go.” I said, keeping the small round of laughter that threatened to escape inside.
Closing the door behind me, alerting both Olivia and my mom that I had left, I followed Cason down the road to his house where he had left his car before walking over to get me. It was a silent walk there; however, it wasn’t an awkward silence – more of a comfortable one.
Reaching his driveway, I saw that his mom’s car was parked where it usually was, but what I didn’t understand is why his mother wanted to stay home on a beautiful day like today.
As I wondered, I voiced my thoughts aloud. “How come your mom is letting you take the car on a day when the weather’s so nice out? Doesn’t she want to go run some errands or something this afternoon?” I asked as Cason unlocked the car doors and we both slipped into our respective seats.
Cason shook his head, replying with a negative answer as he pulled his seatbelt across his chest and buckled up. “My mom’s trying out some new recipes she found over the week so, she’ll be in the kitchen for the majority of the afternoon slaving over her new creations. She said I could have the car for the day when I asked for it.” he replied.
“So,” I continued, buckling up my own seatbelt as Cason put the car into drive and started to pull out of the driveway. “Where exactly are we going for this lunch adventure and, how is it supposed to break me out of my shell?”
Cason glanced briefly at me before returning his eyes to the road. “Oh, you’ll see.” he replied.
There were two things that I didn’t like about his response. The first was that his reply was general and very cryptic and, secondly, I saw a smirk growing on his face with the brief glance he gave me. This could not possibly be good for me.
When Cason said we were going out to lunch I thought he meant that we would be going to the beach stand or even a cheap restaurant in the middle of town, but no. We were currently driving down a long winding road that was apparently leading us to our destination.
“Okay, now I seem to remember when you took me out to the aquarium and that diner we didn’t go down a long winding road that lead nowhere.” I stated, my mood slightly deflated from when I left my house forty five minutes ago. I was now bored, borderline grumpy, and my butt had been asleep for at least the last ten minutes due to sitting in the same spot for so long.
“That, dear one, is because we aren’t going to that diner for lunch.” he replied vaguely, still not giving away anything as to what we were doing. “We’re actually headed the other way out of town; we’re going north.”
“Is this why you came to my house before noon, so it’ll still be lunch time when we actually got to the so-called place we’re going to eat at?” I asked moodily.
Cason chuckled, obviously checking on to my mood from the way I spoke. “It’s about another ten minutes from here, so not too much longer.” he stated.
“And where exactly are we going?” I asked once more, for probably that tenth time in the last forty five minutes.
"I’m still not telling you.” Cason replied cheekily, having way too much fun with the fact that he was basically bringing me to the middle of nowhere.
I slouched back into my seat a little bit more, grumbling to myself for a couple of seconds before Cason turned the radio up a couple of notches – tuning me out. Throwing him a dirty look, I couldn’t keep up my façade because as soon as I caught sight of a mischievous gleam in his eye, I shook my head in amusement, turning my head to look out the window and enjoy nature’s beauty and the radio tunes as we continued to drive.
After another ten minutes, I could see a new town as we approached. “So, where are we?” I asked, sitting up a little straighter to see the buildings and trees we were heading towards.
“This is a town about an hour north of Avondale.” he replied, before continuing in a jokingly demanding voice. “And no more questions, we’ll be there in a couple of minutes.”
Sighing, I didn’t say anything else, just the tiniest bit afraid that Cason might get angry and not treat me to lunch like he had said. Instead, I just sat back in my passenger seat and waited, after all the hour long drive had forced me to work up quite an appetite and I was dying to get some delicious food into my system.
Just short of ten minutes later, Cason put his signal light on and swiftly, yet carefully, pulled into a fairly packed parking lot that rested in front of a fairly big restaurant.
As Cason parked the car in one of the open spaces at the back of the lot, we both clambered out of the car and started towards the building.
"So, we drove all the way out here for a simple little restaurant?” I asked in disbelief as we walked stride in stride towards the front entrance of this seemingly busy place.
Cason shook his head. “First of all, we didn’t drive – I did.” he responded cheekily, making me crack a smile before he continued. “And second of all, there’s a point to driving the distance and I know by the time we leave in a couple hours you’ll be glad we drove all the way up here for a simple lunch.”
I narrowed my eyes at his statement. He seemed so confident that I would love it here… but why?
"Okay… whatever you say.” I said as we fell upon the entrance to the restaurant.
We walked through the doors and this time I let Cason be the guy and hold the door open for me.
As soon as we walked into the building, my eyes immediately latched onto a couple of things. They latched onto the décor, which seemed inexpensive while still looking unique and trendy at the same time, and I could smell the scent of the food as it wafted throughout the room from the kitchen where it was being cooked and plated. However, the thing, or person, that I noticed the most was the middle aged woman that was standing behind the hostess’ podium waiting for something. As soon as the woman’s eyes latched onto Cason and I entering the restaurant, they bulged quickly in surprise before returning to normal size as she walked quickly towards us with a beaming smile on her face.
I was slightly creeped out by the woman walking our way, almost going as far as to cringe towards Cason, until Cason stepped up to her and stepped into the hug she was giving him. As they hugged in front of me, I was even more confused about how he knew this person, as she seemed to live far enough out of town.
Breaking apart from the hug, the middle aged woman kept a smile on her face as she kept Cason at arm’s length. “Cason!” she exclaimed happily. “When you texted me an hour ago I didn’t think you were serious about holding a table for you and a friend for lunch, but here you are!”
Cason chuckled at the mystery woman’s cheery statement. “I told you I’d be here didn’t I?” he replied, running one of his hand’s messily through his hair.
The woman started to laugh and nod, but after a couple of seconds, she suddenly noticed that I was standing there awkwardly, waiting for them to finish their conversation. “Oh, and this must be your friend!” the woman proclaimed as she turned her attention to me. “I’m Tracy dear, and this handsome little guy is my oh-so-troublesome nephew.” she explained as she gestured to Cason, although he was more than half a foot taller than her.
I scrunched up my eyebrows for a second as my eyes flicked back and forth between Cason and Tracy. After a couple of seconds I started to see a few similarities in their appearance that made me believe they were related; their eyes were the same colour and they had the same jaw line.
“Why did you tell me we were coming to the place your aunt worked?” I asked Cason curiously, wondering why he wouldn’t have mentioned it.
“Oh sweetie, I don’t just work here, I own the place. He probably brought you here because he knew he wouldn’t have to pay for your meals.” his aunt replied teasingly, keeping from Cason from answering the question.
My eyes bugged out my head for a second as her replied registered in my mind. “You own the place?” I repeated as a question, just making sure I had heard her correctly.
It seemed like I did hear her right as she nodded in response. “No need to be so surprised darling, oh and I never got your name.” she stated, egging me on to introduce myself.
“Sorry!” I exclaimed in a normal tone of voice, although it did have an ounce of worriedness floating throughout the word. “I’m Jessalyn, Cason’s friend that he dragged an hour out of town just to have lunch.” I finished, my tone changing from slightly frazzled to teasing within a second as I shook Tracy’s hand.
“Well, it’s nice to meet you, but didn’t Cason tell you where you guys were going before you left?” she asked, probably wondering what I was talking about.
I shook my head and giggled slightly. “No, he let me wait until we actually got here to tell me that this was where we were eating.” I explained, sending a flat look to Cason while I spoke.
Cason rolled his eyes at my reply as his aunt turned to him with a shocked face before smacking him on the arm. “Cason, I thought you were raised better than to kidnap a girl and leave her in suspense!” she exclaimed, her loud and bubbly voice actually starting to grow on me as I saw Cason’s shocked face.
“Aunt Tracy!” he proclaimed, slightly embarrassed of his aunt.
“Well, I guess not that I’ve met my nephew’s new friend and managed to embarrass him within a span of five minutes, I think that I had better get back to work while you guys take a seat and enjoy a well-cooked lunch on the house.” Tracy stated. “Just take a seat in any empty table and a waiter should be with you within the next couple of minutes.” she said, moving back into work mode as she returned to the hostess’ spot and started to greet the people who were coming and leaving the restaurant.
“There’s an empty table over there.” Cason stated once his aunt was gone, gesturing to a table near the back of the restaurant near a window.
I nodded at the statement, walking alongside him as we reached the table and sat down across from one another.
“So,” I started, “You drove me all the way up here because you wanted to see your aunt?” I asked, raising an eyebrow as I stirred my straw around the water glass that had already been placed at the table. “Couldn’t you just come up for a weekend visit by yourself?”
Cason shook his head, obviously disagreeing with my questions. “I didn’t bring you here because I had the sudden urge to see my aunt.” he replied, but as I shot him a disbelieving look he rolled his eyes and revised his answer. “Okay, so maybe I wanted to see my aunt, but I also brought you here because this is the only restaurant that I know of that has a certain something which will help you with any nerves you have.”
My curiosity got the best of me as he explained himself. “What do you mean?” I asked in follow up, scrunching up my eyebrows.
Cason grinned at me before replying, “You’ll see.”
A feeling of nervousness and dread washed over me at his reply, however, before I could talk, a waitress walked up to our table.
“So, you finally decided to pay our family a visit?” the waitress asked Cason, raising an eyebrow with a serious expression plastered onto her face.
“Brianna,” Cason replied, addressing the waitress with an eye roll, “My mom and I came up during the summer for a week, it’s only been two months.” he finished before turning to me while nodding to the waitress. “Jessa, this is my cousin Brianna and, Brianna, this is my friend Jessalyn.”
Turning shy all of a sudden, I gave Brianna a timid wave as she smiled at me.
“Hey, and kudos to you for making my cousin drive his ass up here for a visit.” Brianna said while pulling a pad of paper and a pen out of her front apron. “Anyways, what can I get you guys to eat?”
“I’ll have the angus burger with no onions or lettuce, but add bacon and extra cheese. Also, I’ll have a side of small fries and a coke to drink.” Cason ordered, not even taking a glance at the menu that was printed on the place mats in front of us since he already knew his order by heart.
“Of course.” Brianna responded, probably expecting him to order exactly what he did. “And for you?” she asked, nodding down to me.
“Oh, umm…” I stuttered, looking down at the menu as I hadn’t even spared it a glance yet. After a couple seconds of deliberation, I just ordered the chicken burger with shredded cheese and ketchup, a side of fries and a strawberry smoothie to drink.
When Brianna was finished writing down our orders, she looked up from her paper and smiled down at us. “Okay, so I have an angus burger with no onions, no lettuce, extra cheese, and bacon, a chicken burger with ketchup and shredded cheese, two sides of fries, a coke, and a strawberry smoothie, it’ll be a couple minutes before your food is out.” she stated, playing her role as a waitress spot on before turning around and entering a room which I assumed to be the kitchen.
As Brianna left, leaving Cason and I to sit alone again, we just talked about random things; school, last night, Evan and Olivia’s relationship, etc. And, true to her word, a couple minutes later Brianna and another waitress returned with our food, smelling delicious as they placed the plates in front of us, allowing us to dig in.
After taking the first bite of my chicken burger, I immediately knew that the hour long drive up to the restaurant was definitely worth it. I didn’t even know how to describe the taste of the simply-made burger, but if I could sum it up in one word, it would be ‘heaven’.
Finishing my meal quickly, I realized that Cason was just finishing up his order as well so, I decided to approach the subject of why exactly we drove up to eat here again.
“Did you want to tell me why exactly you pulled me away from my house for lunch and dragged me an hour up north to this place now?” I asked, crossing my arms as I demanded an answer.
Cason looked up at me, before flicking his eyes to my right and back to me within the same couple of seconds. “Well, it looks like it’s time for you to find out.” he replied with a grin as he sipped the rest of his coke.
“What do you mean…?” I demanded, thoroughly confused for a second before I heard a slight commotion coming from my right.
As I turned to see what I was hearing, I could vaguely see Cason turning along with me and wiping his hands on a napkin, as if he was about to get up.
What I saw was a small stage that I hadn’t noticed before, which was set up to the right of the restaurant in a small alcove that was built into the structure of the building. What struck me as weird though was the fact that there were a couple of speakers set up, along with a small television hooked up to the left of the stage that faced away from the audience.
As I looked at the stage and wondered what was going on, Cason’s Aunt Tracy walking up to the microphone stand in the middle of the stage.
“Hello everyone, and welcome to yet another lunch time tradition here.” she spoke, looking so excited about whatever was about to go on. “Would my wonderful nephew please come up and explain to the guests here what will be going on for the next hour or so.”
Surprised I looked across the table to see Cason getting up from his seat, sending me a quick smile before walking up to the stage and grabbing the microphone from his aunt.
“Hey everybody.” Cason announced, greeting the guests quickly before continuing his speech. “I’d like to tell you all about a new friend of mine.” he started, pausing for a second to catch my eye.
My breath caught in the back of my throat once that first sentence had escaped his lips. I had a feeling that somehow he was going to let me do something that I would normally never do, and that was giving my anxiety.
“I met this girl at the beginning of the school year, and at first, I was a little rude, maybe even a little cocky to her, but I realized as we got closer that she was just looking for a friend. She had a tough past, and as we both opened up, I appreciated that she has challenges to overcome, just like me or anyone else does.” he rolled through, making me smile for a second at his thoughtfulness. “It was only a very awkward encounter at a corner store that I told her I’d help her break down the walls she’s spent so long building up.”
“So, tonight I thought we’d drive the hour it takes to get to my aunt’s restaurant from our town of Avondale and give her a little support.” he exclaimed, before throwing his arm out, gesturing for me to go up on stage with him. “Jessa, come on up here.”
Standing up nervously, I ducked my head low so I wouldn’t have to focus on the fact that everybody’s eyes in the restaurant were probably planted on me. I scurried my way up to the stage and took the two steps up to stand beside Cason.
“What the hell are you doing?” I muttered quietly, not facing the crowd while I spoke.
"Well Jessa,” Cason replied, using the microphone to announce his response to the whole restaurant. “I drove all the way up here with you because this was the only restaurant I know of that has this special feature. Ladies and gentleman, please give a warm welcome to Jessa as her and I will be the first guests tonight to try our hands at karaoke!”
At Cason’s exclamation, a majority of the guests started clapping and cheering me on, even though they didn’t have a clue who I was. The only thing that was processing through my mind was that he had brought me all the way here for lunch… to participate in karaoke.
Karaoke! Seriously?
“Cason!” I hissed at him as Brianna and Tracy set up the karaoke equipment around us. “What the hell, I don’t sing!”
He must have noticed that my nerves were starting to seep through my exterior skin as his excited face morphed into a serious one as he approached me. Placing his hands on my upper arms to steady me, as I was starting to shake of nerves, he started to give me a pep talk.
“Jessa, I’m going to be up here the whole time with you. We aren’t singing for real because it’s more of a thing to do for fun. It’s going to be fun, and you just join in when you’re ready.” he said with a smile.
Nodding at his words, I took a deep breath as I was handed a microphone. I couldn’t look at the rest of the restaurant guests as Tracy chose a song that Cason had just chosen. We were right beside each other and I kept breathing, telling myself that I could do this. Nobody knew me here and I wouldn’t have to see any of them again.
Right before the music to the song started, I looked at Cason to see him nodding at me and mouthing something at me. “Just look at me and you can do it.”
I sent a shaky smile at him as the music started and I almost wanted to let loose a wild laugh at the tune that started up as Cason started to sing.
She take my money well I’m in need
Yeah she’s a triflin’ friend indeed
Oh she’s a gold digger way over town
That digs on me
Now I ain’t sayin’ she a gold digger
But she ain’t messin’ wit no broke, broke
Now I ain’t sayin’ she a gold digger
But she ain’t messin’ wit no broke, broke
Get down girl, go ‘head get down
Get down girl, go ‘head get down
Get down girl, go ‘head get down
Get down girl, go ‘head
I was almost at the point of laughing as Cason started to butcher the first verse of the song ‘Gold Digger’ by Kanye West, and I easily determined that Cason did not have a future career as a rapper. It was definitely a well-known song, but it was probably the most unlikely song that you would ever find me listening to, even though I did know most of the words.
As Cason was finishing up rapping the first verse, I knew that I had to start singing soon to get this over with. Taking a deep breath, I tried to harmonize with Cason for the chorus.
Now I ain’t sayin’ she a gold digger
But she ain’t messin’ wit no broke, broke
Now I ain’t sayin’ she a gold digger
But she ain’t messin’ wit no broke, broke
Get down girl, go ‘head get down
Get down girl, go ‘head get down
Get down girl, go ‘head get down
Get down girl, go ‘head
The chorus ended and both Cason and I continued to sing the rest of the song together; taking turns or harmonizing together at different parts. A little over half way through the song Cason and I started to get a little into it and were dancing goofily as we sang, not-so-good, to the song.
The song ended and I brought the microphone away from my mouth, sending a smile to Cason. Before I could say anything or thank him, applause was heard throughout the restaurant.
The sound of the applause shocked me right out of my excitement, as I had completely forgotten about the fact that we had been performing in front of an actual crowd – no matter how small that crowd may be.
While I was recovering from my shock as I looked out at the applauding crowd, I felt Cason throw an arm around my shoulders in comfort, squeezing me towards him.
I switched my gaze from the crowd to Cason, and saw him smiling at me. “You did it Jessa.” he said, an underlying tone of proudness in his voice.
As a smile grew on my own face, I realized what he was saying was true. I did it… I actually did it.
Maybe breaking down these walls was going to be a little bit easier than I thought it would be with Cason by my side.
