Featuring: Evan Buckley, Eddie Diaz, and Christopher Diaz from 9-1-1 on Hulu
*The quote is from S3 ep 4 "The Searchers" narrated by Evan Buckley
"There are a lot of ways to be lost at sea. It's not the same as being abandoned or stranded. Those things happen beyond our control."
The hit first responder TV show, "9-1-1", created by Ryan Murphy, is all about being lost and alone and asking for help when needed. It's a show about first responders, police officers, and 9-1-1 dispatchers who are found, family members.
In season one we are introduced to Evan Buckley also known as Buck. He's an egotistical firefighter who doesn't take his job seriously and uses his uniform to his advantage to form relationships with women. Buck has a problematic relationship with his parents and often feels lost around them unless he did something reckless in front of them to make them mad. He lost his brother at a young age causing him to grieve and question his past with his family, and his sister Maddie is carving her path into the world., He's someone who often feels lost and abandoned because he's never had a stable and healthy relationship with someone.
And in season two episode two, "7.1", we are introduced to the recruit of Station 118, Edmundo 'Eddie' Diaz. Eddie is a father, a retired army medic, and a confused man who has broken a lot of promises. He has a pre-teen son. named Christopher who was diagnosed with cerebral palsy when he was a baby.
"Sometimes we just take a wrong turn too close to the tide. The waters rise and sweep us away."
Later on, in season two episode thirteen "Eddie Begins", we learn that Eddie left his son and wife to go serve as an army medic for the second time in Afghanistan after his son was born because he thought that it would be best for his family. Just like how Buck took a wrong turn and almost lost his job at the beginning of season one because he was not taking it seriously.
Nevertheless, Eddie gets a second chance to raise his son when his wife leaves their hometown of El Paso, TX since she cannot take care of Christopher anymore and be in a stable relationship with Edde. Once Shannon is gone, Eddie is left to take care of Christopher by himself at his home in Texas. He argues with his parents who think that Christopher belongs with his grandparents in Texas instead of with his father. This results in the son and father duo moving from El Paso to L.A. where Eddie got recruited as a firefighter at Station 118.
"We fight the currents for a way back to dry land and solid ground, to each other. To be normal."
At station 118, Eddie meets Buck who is dealing with the same problems as him: family and relationship drama, a toxic relationship with his parents, and feeling lost but holding on for everyone else's sake. Nevertheless, Buck introduces himself as Eddie's competition in the firehouse instead of a friend and mentor, which leads to a lot of misunderstanding. Eddie did not come to L.A. to compete with firefighters; he came to L.A for a fresh start with his son and his work. And all it takes is a 7.1 earthquake for Buck to realize that Eddie is not his competition, he is struggling with single-parenting, firefighting, and getting a good night's sleep.
"And when we catch our breaths, we search the shore for all that we have lost and everything we have loved for our families..."
Instead of trying to compete with Eddie, Buck helps him out by introducing him to an old friend of his, Carla, who is a home healthcare aide. Carla has experience working with children with disabilities and has plenty of time on her hands to take care of Christopher while Eddie is working more than 12-hour shifts to support himself and his son.
After lots of convincing from Buck, Eddie realizes that Carla has everything settled and taken care of, he can get some rest and spend some family time with his co-workers. He's able to regain what he lost when he was in an unstable relationship with his wife in El Paso, all thanks to Buck. Carla creates a sense of normalcy in the Diaz household.
"For our dreams, for our futures. Our friends and our loved ones and those who couldn't swim."
Despite Carla's arrival to make Eddie's life easier, Eddie's wife, Shannon dies in a car crash at the end of season two, leaving Eddie to deal with heartbreak, grief, and single-parenting alone. However, Eddie is not as alone as he believes that he is. He's still got, Buck and the rest of Station 118 as his support system. Buck will do anything for Eddie, even if that means picking Chris up from school while he's on shift and the 118 is always there if Eddie needs someone to talk to.
"Sometimes being lost is not knowing how to get from where we are to where we want to be."
At the end of the day, after the tragedies and traumas that Buck and Eddie have to face in their careers and personal lives, they always have each other's backs. Whether that means being a shoulder to cry on, a supportive friend, or a second father figure for Chris. Buck is always there to help Eddie out when he feels lost at sea. And Christopher is always there to remind them to smile when they feel lost or broken physically or emotionally.
