-Chapter Fifteen-

Frisk but into her waffle, trying to soothe the fierce hunger burning within her. Sighing, she pushed the plate away. Nothing appealed to her. She craved something, but she didn't know what. She looked out the window, squinting as the bright June sunlight streamed through the blinds. She heaved herself up, trying to ignore the pain in her lower back. She washed her hands, shivering as she rubbed the cut on her palm. They had agreed not to tell anyone and just say that Frisk had fallen and cut her hand on a chunk of concrete.

She walked out the front door and laid on the grass, sneezing as a blade tickled her nose. She closed her eyes, drifting off as the sun warmed her skin. A voice startled her, making her jump.

"There's spiders in the grass, you know."

     "Spiders are my friends."

     "Who isn't your friend?"

     "Humans."

     "Chara's a human."

"She's different. Not as... Cold as most humans are. She really just wants me to be happy, which is more than I can say for some people."

Jojo giggled and sat next to her,"You know,"she began, sighing slightly,"you're very unlucky. You've gone through things I wouldn't wish on my worst enemies. But you've persevered. Even at age ten, you saved a whole race from a prison, even though countless of us wanted you dead. You brought two previously dead children back to life, never giving up where most people would have. You've always been so, I don't know, happy. But lately, you haven't been. You might've thought we didn't, but we have noticed. You're slower to smile these days, and you've stopped making jokes. I wish you would tell us what's wrong."

Frisk stiffened, drawing her knees up to her chest,"I can't tell anyone. I can't I can't I can't!" She started rocking back and forth, feeling the terrifyingly familiar tightening feeling in her chest,"I can't tell anyone! It's my fault! It's all my fault!"

"Woah! Frisk calm down. Breathe, com-"

Jojo's words faded out as Frisk felt herself being detached from reality. She tried to focus on her breathing, but couldn't. She felt an overwhelming sense of guilt and anger, directed to herself. She heard a high pitched keening noise, and it took her a second to realize it was coming from her. She heard Jojo calling for help, but nobody came.

But nobody came but nobody came  but nobody came butnobodycamebutnobodycamebutnobodycame.

The words blurred together as she felt herself being lifted, her vision becoming tinged with black. She heard a distant siren, and fought to stay awake. But the darkness was calling.

Come, now. Submit to your guilt. It's all your fault and you know it. Sleep, and let the world move on without you. No one needs you anymore. You're worthles, you don't deserve Chara.

Chara. The thought of her was the only thing that could even begin to ease Frisk. She clung to the vision of Chara, of her smile, her sparkling eyes, as darkness wrapped around her. Soon, she felt nothing as her vision of Chara faded away. Nothing.

     Nothing.

     Always nothing.

---

"Wake up Frisk. Please. You have to stay determined."

The voice roused Frisk, but she couldn't open her eyes. She was alone in her own world with nothing but her thoughts and the voice gently urging her to wake up. She found herself drawn to the phrase 'stay determined.' She hadn't heard that for so long. Fear shot through her as a terrible idea struck her. What if, when she opened her eyes, she would see a bed of golden flowers? What if she had died? What if her determination had brought her all the way back to the beginning in one last desperate attempt to keep her alive?

Beep.

     What if?

     What if?

What if she refused to wake up.

Beep.

What if she ignored the increasingly familiar voice.

What if she remained, all alone, in this peaceful darkness, having nothing to fear.

     What if?

Beep.

     What if she listened.

What if she opened her eyes and faced the world.

     What if she stayed determined.

Beep.

---

Frisk gasped and sat up. Or, well, tried to sit up. She looked at her waist with bleary eyes and saw a wide black belt around her. There were also smaller ones around her wrists and legs. She began to panic, thrashing her head around. She spotted Chara in one corner, and tried to call out, but her voice didn't work. Years seemed to pass as Frisk stared helplessly at Chara, willing her to help. Only seconds later Chara seemed to just appear at her side, stroking her face gently.

"Shh, shh. You're okay. You're in the hospital. A doctor will be here soon. I'm here, and I love you. Oh, Frisk."

Frisk blinked, confused, but had no time to do anything else as a squad of nurses and doctors flooded in. Frisk cried silently as they ushered Chara out, fighting against her restraints. One by one, the strangers left, except one. A guy, in his mid-thirties it looked. He had reddish brown hair and light brown eyes that shone with unspeakable sympathy.

"Hello, Frisk. I hope you're feeling better, you've been out for almost four hours. Do you remember anything that happened?"

"Not really," she rasped,"only going outside. Then I woke up here."

"Okay. Also, don't worry about your voice. It'll come back, that was a side affect from the sedative."

     "You had to sedate me?"

"Well, yes. You were thrashing about, completely unconscious. You kept crying out, saying it was your fault. But, let's not worry about that. Mrs. Toriel said that you have had episodes like this before, but never this bad. She also said that you've been having them a lot in the last few weeks. I understand that you, wow, singlehandedly freed all of monsterkind from underground, even though many of them tried to kill you. That's, wow. Um, anyway, I have a theory. But it will take a while for me to be sure."

     "Can, can I go home?"

"Soon, Frisk. We have a few more tests to run..." He trailed off as a nurse entered the room and began whispering urgently to him, showing him a sheet of paper. He straightened up as she left, a stern look crossing his face,"Frisk, tell me. Has anything happened to you recently that could have triggered the reappearance of these episodes? Please do not lie, this is for your own good."

Frisk felt her breath catch in her throat. Her eyes stung as she forced herself to nod, and she began retelling everything that had happened.
